Let's be clear: taxis and ubers are NOT public transit. They are designed to serve people who are willing and able to pay higher rates for greater convenience and privacy, which does not serve the majority of the public. In an ideal world, public transit would be a cheap and convenient alternative to private transit (i.e. cars), but America's wholesale embrace of car dependency has gutted so many good public transit systems and completely obliterated walkability. Just look up how Los Angeles dismantled their superior "Red Car'" public transit system in order to transform the city into a completely car-dependent city. It's truly sad.

When I lived in NY, I lived like 10 minutes from JFK. I used to take the TLC cabs, either New Lots cab company or ATB Cab company for $20-$25. That's if no one was available to drive me.

The didn't have $1 cabs in Manhattan because the drivers would get busted faster in Manhattan. It was illegal and in Brooklyn, I have seen the driver just jump out and leave the cab when getting pulled over and everyone was still in it. You couldn't do that in Manhattan.
