I agree with Monet, as a Mexican woman I appreciate when non Spanish speaking people try to pronounce the language as it is meant to be spoken. The accent of the native language isn’t just a sound adapted, it’s the sound of how the language is meant to be pronounced. I think Bob may not understand fully because I think he only speaks English so has a different experience. My best friend was Vietnamese and she taught me words and speaking with the “accent” was pronouncing the words correctly. It does bug me too when people don’t try, it doesn’t make me furious or anything but I do appreciate when people try.

I'm Latino and I don't care how people pronounce SPANISH. Bob is absolutely right. Judging people about how they pronounce a colonial language that was brutally forced onto millions of people is corny. I'm honored when people try to communicate with me to the best of their *abilities*. Why waste brain cells dissecting someone's intentions towards you based on how they pronounce things in a language they aren't fluent in?
I agree totally, same with learning french and even Hungarian. When you use the language and put effort into the correct accent, not only are you much more easily understood (even if you're slower-speaking) but it's almost always appreciated by the native speaker for a myriad of reasons.

Bob and Monet were discussing two different aspects of accents. Monet is correct when it comes to people STUDYING languages. There are people who know they can pronounce it more accurate but choose not to because they are lazy. But a lot of people have accents not because they were too lazy during studying it, but rather they are immigrants or had to learn a new language to communicate with someone, they didn't have classes or free time to study/practice. So usually you are going to try and learn enough to be understood. So accents aren't the priority for those people as long as they are able to communicate. Accents are beautiful because it means someone is trying to communicate in a language that is not their default. In tonal languages, if you don't get certain sounds correct, you will have a really hard time being understood. If you ignore the tones then you literally aren't speaking the language, it's not an accent at that point. I love language, linguists and phonetics, I could discuss it all day.
Also its escuela azul, escuela de azul would mean the school of blue. Adjectives can go in front of nouns in Spanish but it can change the meaning. Eg. la escuela grande, means the big school, but la gran escuela, mean the great/important school. Spanish is an amazing language neither Bob or Monet should feel embarrassed, the only way to learn is to make mistakes.

Idk.. I'm on the fence. I don't mind when my Chinese family mispronounce my name. They know how to say it in American English but aren't comfortable

@@MattIsntYoung Most liberals (like Bob and Monet) judge white, monolingual Americans for mispronouncing ethnic names but POC immigrants get away with it, and they should! As long as someone is trying, that's all that should matter. In Bob's example, if you're speaking English, saying Surjeeoh is easier than saying Serheeyo with a Spanish accent. I speak Spanish fluently as well and if I'm speaking English, I say tortilla (for example) in an American English accent, not spanish. I find it exhausting t o roll my rs in between non-rolled r's unless I'm exclaiming in Spanish. It's hard to switch back and forth!

I think they’re both right. I think the media tends to use southern accents to promote negative stereotypes like stupidity and backwardsness. I think the Hassan Minhaj moment on Ellen illustrated a pretty good point. There is a certain English speaker exceptionalism that people have, where they think that it's fine enough to say any name the way they think it should sound. It just so happens though, that certain language sounds are more comfortable for the English-speaking mouth, while others are not. That's why when Hassan Minhaj pointed out that we can say Timothy Chalamet, it didn't truly occur to us that both names were not English names- we've learned how to pronounce certain sounds because they're normalized in English speaking society (due to your Eurocentrism, immigration, and racism amongst other things). It's at least worth an effort to try and pronounce someone's name accurately if they ask it. In an appropriate moment, you can ask how to say it- they'll try to teach you if it's important to them- if it's not, then they'll tell you not to worry. I don't really think it's up to the person who's mispronouncing to make the decision about whether or not it's important.
Alternately, if there is a long accepted pronunciation of an object in English, I think it's acceptable to say it the English way when in an English speaking country. If corrected abroad, I think it's fair to try and adjust.
Lastly, if someone is trying to learn a language and is gently corrected- that's helpful because it's going to assist them in pronouncing new words accurately. It's important to differentiate between someone unaware, and struggling, however.
There's a difference between correction and chiding.

Second : Me as a Puertorrican: I Really appreciate when a non Spanish speaking person try there best to give the right pronunciation to names I appreciate the effort . When it comes to accents : I think is difficult to get a perfect pronunciation if your trying to speak a non first language of yours . And we need to understand specially in a country that overflow the multiple cultures and the main language is English we nee to be patient about it . Now : when people is intolerable and try to pronounce something in another language and a different accent , we should not get offended .
Now : in a country with multicultural individuals I will encourage everyone at least to learn a second language.
I agree with Monet almost totally, it's the same with learning french and Hungarian in my experience. When you use the language and put effort into the correct [general] accent, not only are you much more easily understood (even if you're slower-speaking) but it's almost always appreciated by the native speaker for a myriad of reasons.
On the other side I'm just realizing that as a native English speaker (sort of, Newfoundland accent), it really doesn't bother me when people don't attempt an English accent... but I think that's likely because English is soooooo widespread and varied. From the southern USA to the UK to Newfenese (East Canada), Irish or Scottish... Maybe that's why it doesn't bother me in English at all... 🤷♂️ Interesting for sure!

Both sides had points and it felt like they were making two different statements which didn't dissagree with eachother, I would personally agree that you should try to pronounce foreign words correctly and people sometimes don't even try(Monet) and I agree with the observation that while I like Monet would not be offended if someone foreign could not pronounce an english word correctly I would not correct them or be mad, because I understand accents can get in the way of pronounciation. In the end it's just how Monet said it's about the attitude towards if you are even putting in effor or not.
yeah it felt to me like bob was approaching it from someone being /unable/ to pronounce things the native way, and monet from someone being /unwilling/ to, or just not bothering to try, even if they know how to. monet clearly has known people that were receiving instruction in a language, but chose not to follow it (as have i with classmates), but bob hasnt so maybe thats why bob wasnt really picturing people that are just choosing to say things kind of wrong.

When I lived in California, I worked with many Mexicans, and I felt self-conscious speaking Spanish...especially with an accent. For some reason, I was worried about disrespecting them. I don't know why. But when I talk with my Spanish-speaking friends, I'm more inclined to try to include the accent. Maybe that's because I know they know my motives are without malice.
A lot of foreigners truly appreciate the effort. But it also depends on the location and situation. Example: I went to France and could tell I was being judged harshly for attempting the accent especially in a business/restuaramt setting. However we had 3 foreign exchange students in my dorm in college in the USA and I could tell they liked my efforts. If you speak the local language well, the efforts to speak with foreigners is seen as commendable.
I am Hispanic and I can understand if people don’t know any better and mispronounce words. However, a lot people choose to change our language because they find it inferior or because they think it’s funny or charming and that just annoys me. For example, people like to pronounce the word quesadilla like “Kay-as-Dee-ya” fully being able to pronounce the word correctly, because every part/sound of the word is used in the English language (KEvin, SAm, THEE, YA).
I would definitely visit a drag museum.

I taught myself English (still learning) by watching tv shows in English and a 99c store English/Spanish dictionary, in my small town the cable company only had one channel in English and it was from the UK television, my vocabulary is basically formed by the sentences and the accents of the particular show I learned it from and considering how many different regional accents exist in the UK my accent is all over the place since is a combination of all of them and depending of the words and phrases that I’m using it can go from British to Scottish, Irish, cockney or welsh, I didn’t know they were all different when I started learning but when I moved to the US almost immediately people started pointing out and questioning why or how a Mexican like me end up with that accent it made me so incredibly self conscious to a point that I would leave a restaurant when a waiter asked me for my order or a cashier at the grocery store asked me any type of questions like joining their rewards program so I had to consciously Americanize my accent even to this day, only when I get comfortable with people ( or if I’ve been drinking) my accent comes back specially with my husband who’s American and never fails to calls me “Downton abbey” at least 3 times a day, so I absolutely agree with Monet about some people not making an effort to improve pronunciation, while there is cases who for genuine learning difficulties prevents them to improve thats a very small percentage regardless, the great majority are simply not making an effort to actively practice everyday and that is the real key for improvement.

It’s also important to note that an immigrant speaking English, and an American speaking literally anything besides English are two completely different dynamics. Speaking English is considered a privilege.

Accents are absolutely okay, people shouldn't demonize them. But I think there is a level of effort everyone should be making to speak the language "correctly"

Re: Accents. I’m an American who pronounces Croissant “qwa-son” like the French do. people read me for it all the time but my mind parrots accents really well. I recognize not everyone’s does.

I 100% agree with Monet, I don’t think she’s trying to vilify people with Accents. I think she’s saying that the way you emphasize, and pronounce your words contributes to the overall culture, vernacular, and comprehension of language. The argument that one should dismiss clear, and blatant mispronunciations (for the sake of you understanding what their saying) , is absurd, and not conducive to effectively communicating with people from different nationalities. Ex.) as an African American woman who grew up speaking solely English, no matter how “good” of a Spanish accent I can produce, I will NEVER NOT HAVE an American accent. So “accents” are not the issue, effort is. Bobs point makes literally no sense. I just think he’s devoted to seeing it differently. Love you both. 🤍

Monet has more experience souround people with different accents, who native tongue is another than English, compared to Bob, who has probably more contact with different American accents of English.
In Monets defence, I'm one of those who knows and speaks English, but sometimes I'm too lazy to pronounce some Ts or Ds or when they are soft, or we'll pronounced... I know it all, but sometimes it's just too much effort and I use the accents excuse that I can haha

exactly. i was in a half french program in school, aiming to teach us (english-speaking canadian kids from a non-francophone area, basically none of us had any french background outside of school) french. while none of us obtained perfect fluency from it, because thats just so hard to do when class is the only time you use it, twelve years of almost half french instruction and work is a damn long time to pick up a decent accent, at least as good as can be expected from a non-native thats not properly immersed. but by the end of twelve years, id say that about half of my classmates french accents were terrible. like, roughly on par with someone that began learning french a month ago. not because it was too hard, or they were unable, but because they just couldnt be assed. for those twelve years we learned how we should sound, and everyday for twelve years they resolutely chose not to do it lmao. they read french words more or less how one would read them in english. and i mean, if they dont care about obtaining a decent accent then thats fine, it doesnt bother me. but it was very clearly a choice, because we all had the exact same education, and those of us that put effort into a good accent have one, and the rest dont.
intent and effort are the big factors for me. i dont think people need to bend over backwards or monitor their speech that much, and frankly i love accents so a world where everyone is able to conform to the native one 100% would be really sad and undesirable for me. but if you DO know how to pronounce a word properly, and youre easily able to, why not just do it? like it is a little strange to purposefully pronounce something incorrectly imo, especially if you have actual experience with the language, which i feel is kind of just what monet is getting at, and reminded me a lot of my classmates. they mention spanish-speaking people speaking english with a spanish accent, but accents in ones second language like that are usually the result of not comfortably being able to "lose" your native accent, which is... normal unless you were raised bilingual from a young age. even though i put a lot of effort into my french accent, someone in france would know i'm north american right away. but i am still doing my best to have a good accent. me just naturally being identifiably not a native french speaker while speaking french is different than me choosing to not put effort into my accent even though i know better. i feel like monet and bob were thinking about two different things in that moment.

Bob is confused everyone has an accent but we are all capable at ATTEMPTING to recreation and pronounced things in a different language. The issue in the US and what Monet was trying to explain is that many Americans like to whitewash names they anglocize Spanish words.
If someone's name is Maria and you say pronounced it like Mariah Carey or Mary thats rude. It's not them having an accent it's them not taking any effort at calling you by the name.

I have to agree with Monet here. There a difference between not saying a word/name correctly and an accent. I don’t speak Italian, so I have an American accent when I say Italian words but I try to pronounce the sounds as closely as possible. Same with any language and name. It would be rude to pronounce someone’s name wrong just because I want to say it in an Anglicized way.
