This video gives a review of the Rules of the Road International and Inland for captain license candidates. It covers Rule 1 through 37 in detail. Rules of the Road make up one module of the captains license course.
I passed my USCG rules of the road test in minutes because of this video. Excellent instructor. I attended a sea school in my area and the only thing I learned was that I was going to need help to pass the testing. Thank God for this guy and CZcams. *Captain Drew.
Thank you for the kind words Drew!
@@uscaptainstraining *Captain Drew lol
I went to a great Maritime school, but this video was still one of the best study tools I found online. I watched this one several times before I took the ROR exam. I passed with a 96 on the first try.
I was taught for pecking order:
New (Not Under Command)
Reels (Restricted in Ability to Maneuver)
Catch ( Constrained by Draft)
Fish (Fishing vessel)
So (Sailboat)
Purchase (Power driven vessel)
Some (Seaplane)
This guy is a great instructor. Low key approach, and he continually works to relate the rules to real life situations. Can't tell you how many times I've had someone stand at the lectern and just read out of the book. And he really knows/understands the rules.
I agree, and appreciate his knowledge and understanding of the rules.
This guy is the best!! He saved my bacon.... After eight days in a captain's class covering everything I didn't have a very good grasp of the rules. It was confusing to say the least and I've been on the water for over 35 years.
I had purchased another DVD that was terrible. All it did was read the rules. Nothing to help you remember them. Anyway, with only three days left, I watched each of his videos twice and copied down his white board charts as he went along. The morning of the test, the first thing I did was write down the charts from memory. Only missed two questions in the rules and passed.
Also passed the rest of the segments so working on the CPR, first aid, physical, and drug testing.
Don't know who this guy is, but after watching you will see that he knows his stuff and he presents it in a way that is learnable. So I could care less what he wears and that the camera went out of focus a few times. He can polish it up later. And if he was closer than Chicagoland I would buy him several drinks!!
So keep up the good work buddy! And if you're ever in SoCal let me know. I'm good for the drinks!
You've been sailing for over 35 years without knowing the COLREGS?

@@daylaanguerra9620 All vessels have the COLREGS onboard either physical or digital. Does this mean that the officer is not required to know the rules because he has the book with him? Do you sit with the book in your hands looking for the rules while giving orders to your helmsman to avoid other vessels?
Im attending what I have always been told was the best school for USCG training (probably heard this because I am local to the school, who knows) called Chapman School of Seamanship and I learned 10xs more from this guy than I did in class. The way you kept me engaged and applied rules to practical situations to explain made me understand and retain it.
I found the channel when studying plotting at night and didn't even know there was a segment on rules of the road so after I learned i needed to retake my rules portion of the test I watched this series and now I am 100% confident in retaking. I got a 100% on my chart plotting first try due to his teaching and now I will pass the rules no problem.
If anyone is struggling with understanding anything on the USGC training I would recommend this guy over anyone else. And I cant believe he put the info on youtube for free. I wish I could donate somehow because he saved me money having to redo any classes or retake fees. Thanks for helping.
We are glad to help! Your feedback and referral is payment enough.
@@uscaptainstraining knowing that you can take the course online now, I will be referring a buddy of mine looking to get his masters license to you for sure. Can you explain briefly how proctoring works when online? Does he just need to have the instructor on webcam during his exam?
Also, do you offer a package for oupv, master up to 100 and towing endorsement all in one? I can lend him my block island chart and my plotting tools if that saves him money also. I saw on website there is a package but he didnlt know if it included towing endorsement as well.
Just wanted to thank you for posting this, I just passed my 6 pack test and used your vids countless times over the last year to help with the course. Thanks man!
Hello Captain! I just wanted to send you a note of thanks. When Covid first happened the MPT COURSE in SOUTH FLORIDA was put online. I did the course and epically failed. Doing the course online was a nightmare. I chose to take another two weeks of my life and go back face-to-face and take it. I watched your videos several times a day. Because of your videos and your knowledge I passed with flying colors. Simply said, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your knowledge and the videos you put online.
100 Ton Captain
Jeff Gold🙏🏻
You are welcome Jeff! We are here to help.
this is the comment I'm looking for thanks
Thank you for knowing your subject. I am a retired professor and you kept your audience engaged and active. You read a little bit and then got active right away. You took us on a few interesting side trips but kept focused on the rules. So good.
To the guy who made this video and so many others that I watched, I say a HUGE thank you! Your videos and way of teaching made the information much easier to understand and retain. Definitely the best instructor I’ve seen on CZcams by far! I aced all 4 of my exams this week from my online OUPV course. You’re the man!!
Thank you!
This guy is smart and his instruction is on point seems like a good guy and knows how to help
smart enough to make you think he knows and get your money lmao
Niel. Your awsome taking my 100ton captains course in hawaii.and you have been a major study tool for me. Thanks bro!!! Hope to pass ROR next you got me through a few of the tests so far. Fingers crossed
I've been studying for my Master up to 45m for my AMSA orals in Australia, I have found your videos to be so helpful with my learning, you have an amazing teaching ability and I wanted to say thank you! I understand so much more after your videos.
Glad to help!
This is a GREAT video [understatement]... the ROR test is notoriously the hardest (with a passing mark of 90%)... I watched this video over and over, supplemented by my course notes and, as a result, passed my ROR paper today at the first attempt with a score of 98% due in no small part to this excellent video... Neil, if you're ever on Long Island, look me up... I owe you a beer at the very least... extremely well laid out approach to the subject matter, brought to life wherever possible with real life examples that we can all visualize and imagine... nicely done!
just passed the test thanks to this video- much appreciated!
Currently a QM2 in the USN thinking an bout getting my 100ton captains license, watching this is so relieving. I’m honestly super confident after watching this Thanks 🙏🏾
I’m a Chief Quartermaster in the US Navy and I love and use this video all the time. Thank you! Also where can I get that awesome sweatshirt I need that in my life!!!!!
His name is capt Neil Smith. ..sir you r simply best ..thank u so much
Stoked to have found these videos to watch and listen to before I start my 100ton course. Most of this is stuff I’ll never need to reflect on again since the area I fish doesn’t have tugs, ships, freighters or much in the way of night traffic but it’s nice I can get a head start on the course before actually going.
Beer, wine, fishing; whatever it is you are into; we/I owe you plenty. Thank you for taking the time to create this. At the very least, I hope that the time you put into publishing these videos has resulted in great fortune.
This helped me so much. I got my steersman license and I watched this video for 3 weeks straight while I was in school, it really helped me remember everything
I'm sitting for my 1600 masters in a couple months and just wanted to say thank you so much for the videos! They help a lot! Very informative and educational.
Thank you for a clear and relaxed lesson. I study as a sea captain and this was a good way to go through Colregs basics once again before an exam.
Can't thank you enough for giving away all of this information for free. It has certainly taken a lot of pressure off from my upcoming classes.
Who is this guy!? F***** rad!
I’m taking the 6 pack in April 2021
So glad I found this guy
Thanks Wisconsin teacher guy
Thanks to him I’ll be well prepared when I go to take the two week course

He seems stoned af but is actually revising the rules good with nice supplementary information & knowledge! Nicely done :)
Very helpful video, now that I'm on my way being a deck cadet. I learned this in class but forgot it easily, after seeing this video I recalled everything. Good job.
Still extremely good information and a great review. Passed my RoR test today thanks in part to this video
This dude is an excellent instructor! Outstanding material with exceptional presentation and style.
Watching this was great revision for things I'd mainly forgotten. Wish I'd had a tutor like this when I did my nav courses. Thank you!

Thanks for this video, it really assisted me during my college years in understanding the COLREGs. I also loved the words on your jacket "TALK NAUTICAL TO ME BABY."
I enjoy this instructors style of teaching. Personable, clear and concise.
Thank you! Much appreciated Jon.
Best COLREG refesher video around. Watched it repeatedly while preparing for my Cox assessment. Many thanks.
Another good way (especially if you played Super Mario before) of reminding the types of vessel in the order of their priority, only that is upside down:
Peach (power driven)
Says (sailing)
Fluffy (Fishing)
Cats (Constrained)
R (RAM)
Nice (NUC)
And don't forget to add seaplanes at the top, that's how I do it.
I’m a QuarterMaster in the U.S. Navy I just wanted to let you know this helped me out so much I’m currently in a journeyman school and the instructors are trying their best but you hit most of it on the head I just gotta review my notes several more times and take more ROR test and it will stick thank you so much Sir!! Can’t wait to take this back to my ship and teach my guys!

Great lecture, amazing teacher. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this. Hope i could pass my promotion interview
It's interesting how 10 years ago it was still "cool" to catch a whole school of salmon with one net. Thanks to those guys that did it then, there's not many schools of salmon around anymore..
Awwwwwww that’s so sad.
A guy called Hitler 80 years ago tried to wipe an entire group of individuals to extension also, but they grew back, crazy.
Wow.. I've learned tonnes of knowledge. As an aspiring deck officer this Channel is a very big help.. Great💪
Dear Captain! Thanks and Love from Bangladesh 💙 You teach me the ror in a magnificent way! May Allah Bless you and your family!

Glad to hear it!
Very Helpful specially the memory aids used for lights and sound signals
quarter master training in the canadian navy thank you so much for this video!
thanks very much for video. clear explanation.
As far as how high the stern tow lights have to be when towing astern, I've never seen a tug's tow lights higher than a barge and cargo. I'm speaking mainly of RORO(ROLL ON/ROLL OFF) barges. Crowley has three decks for their larger RORO barges, and you're not able to see the stern tow lights, except when overtaking. I don't know of any part of the rules that dictate the height of stern tow lights. I also only know this from escort jobs when in or outbound with those tugs and tow. I could be wrong as far as the rules go.
good vid, m8 ... thanks 4 posting ...
Great, thank you sir you are a great help .
This has been explained really well, thanks
