I grew up in the USVI in the 70`s, lived in St John and the High School I went to was on St Thomas, Volunteered to work on the ferry boats after school . When I graduated in 78, I had my sea time to get a 100 ton 100 pas Masters license it was called an Ocean Operators License back then, I worked in the industry for about 5 years, drove ferry boats, Dive boats, Crew boats, Charter boats, best money was made delivering boats from VI to St Martin, no cell phones or GPS in those days, Hurricane sitting boats in Hurricane Holes, but the best bang for buck was Officiating a wedding in re moat places by boat and doing a little Photography

You guys ( girls) ROCK! the USCG does not give those licenses away, I understand the work you put in. I have my Chief Engineers License. I worked my way up through the engine room. I remember the first time I sailed as Chief my nerves were crazy, even after 17yr working aboard ship. When I went to the Gulf on a dive support vessel (gas and oil industry) was an eye opening experience to say the least. Anyway I'm following yawl and enjoying your videos. Great channel, captains! I believe the USCG counts a day as UNDERWAY for a minimum of 4 hours so time working on a boat tied to a dock will not count toward sea time. Also there is no requirement to get your 6-Pack / OUPV before getting your masters. If you have the sea time there's nothing preventing you from going straight for the masters. It's inspiring to see young women making a living on the water. Keep the great content coming!

NY Tug captain checking here. To be captain on a tug you need a license called Master of Towing Vessels which is not related to tonnage. You get this by getting seatime on a towing vessel, at 18 months you can take or sit for the Apprentice Mate Steersman exam, once you pass you advance to master with seatime only.

You have a lot of well described information and I have to tell you I've watched plenty of CZcams videos on fishing. I have learned a lot of different fishing methods and tips that I will put into my own practice. I been home for the past 4 year after getting hurt at Walgreens and then major back surgery. So that's hobbled me a little more then I expected. I will buy a boat when everything settles down. I really want to thank you for these videos. You both are so talented and please keep it up. Nice explanation of the process, I think most people know about the sea time and the test but not all the stuff in the middle. Great to have a captain's license if you are actually going to take people out on the water for money but from what I hear it isn't something you necessarily want to have if you just take out your boat recreationally since if an accident between a vessel operated by a captain and a vessel operated by a non-captain took place the captain would be held to a much higher level of responsibility. I know it is cheating but that is the way the real world operates. I'm happy reading up and watching videos so that I operate as safely and responsibly as possible.

Thank you, I find your video very informative. First I was watching "Boat Crashes" on CZcams then it got me to wonder how much does a boat cost (that's where I found your video). Later I decided to check out your channel to see what's your channel is about. This video captured my interest due to the title "Captain License", I didn't know that you need a license to drive a boat but it does make sense. If you need a license to drive a car then yeah it would make sense for you to get a license for a boat too. So how long does it take for you girls to get your license? I hope it doesn't take 5 to 10 years to get a Captain license, I mean what if I die on the 6 year (then all my hard work would be for nothing). I think it would be faster to hire a Captain instead of being a Captain. Now I saw people catch black tip shark and cook/eat it for their CZcams channel. I want to do something bigger on my new channel, I want to catch and eat a great white shark on my channel. What do you girls think?

I think it’s 6 hours= 1 day or something around there and then if it’s your own boat it by the onset system but if your went with some one else you have to get them to prove that you went on that day

You don’t need to get a six pack first. You can go straight into the Masters if you have the sea time. This works mainly for Yachting or commercial guys

I obtained my pilots license for aircraft without attending classes. I just studied from FAA provided material and took the written exam. Can I do the same for boat captains license or do I have to take a course before I test.

How do you log your sea time and who’s keeping up with it. The captain? I’m just confused on how the Sea time is regulated

Is there a specific spreadsheet or form to show I have my sea time?

I want to be able take people out to charter and do eco tours. Which should I get? What is the best company should I use?

Hey girls you can count time on your own private boat if you own one, which is good for me because I am developing a business that will put me on a boat a lot and eventually i want to do some commercial work.
