Get Your 6-Pack Captain's License

  • Over the last year, I've been working on obtaining my 6-Pack Captain's License. There are several tasks to accomplish in order to do so including passing a USCG-approved OUPV/Six-pack course. In this video, I'll walk you through what I did in order to receive my credentials.

    SUNY Maritime grad here. I also got my six pack from Mariners Learning System back in the day. It actually helped my career along. After I graduated SUNY my first job was on tug. There was this purgatory time period where I had not passed the USCG exam yet. I was able to use that seatime to upgrade to master because I held that silly little six pack. The guys that started Diamond Marine are friends of mine and fellow alumni. While not necessary to use a service like theirs, it helps. I use a consultant for every renewal, raise in grade and increase in scope.

      I’m actually currently studying to upgrade to my masters. I’m sure I’ll use them again to submit my paperwork. That’s definitely not my specialty so it’s worth it to me.

    One long blast is the inland sound signal for a power-driven vessel getting underway (all lines pulled) usually quickly followed by 3 short blasts when the vessel backs. Being that guy at the boat ramp is fun!

      I only saw one other home made. The one issue they had was theirs wasn’t long enough to go deep enough.

    Got to a face to face school. I purchased the Mariners Learning System and studied for a while but very confusing. Good Luck passing the test. Mike Adams Marine is the place to go. Crystal River, FL. You wont fail.

    Understand that this is all learning system to learn but I’ve been out of boat since I was 12 years old and there ain’t a single piece of this that I can see that really have your fisherman that you would even use doesn’t make any sense to me that they require all this other than to protect their pocketbooks you’re doing a wonderful job I never seen anybody explain this in so much detail beautiful

      Thanks, and I know what you mean. I was thinking about it the other day and it doesn’t even cover some of the practical things, such as swell height and distance between swells, things that you really need to know. But some of it is good info so… good luck.

      I'm using "preparation classes" as a refresher, and every once in a while I actually learn something that I skipped over or forgot from my youth. But people want the government to "certify" them, so if that piece of paper makes you happy....

      Then I heard you mention school…I thought I liked this guy….So I google you as all of us do. I too was an art educator for 17 years, now demoted to administration. Been trying to get a job in Brunsco for a while. We need to talk art, fishing and teaching sometime for sure. Small world.

    Thank you for the video and congrats on the hard work paying off. Question: I don't have my 360 days quite yet and I've seen a place called Sea School that offers a 6-day course for the OUPV. Is that something I can do first or is there a time limit once a course is complete to test and submit? I'll definitely look into the materials you used and maybe at least begin the studying.       I think if I’m not mistaken that you have one year from the time you pass the exam to submit the paperwork. Good luck!

    I have the answers for the same exam. General Navigation #2 test. Does anyone have the answers for the plotting or any of the same tests for the mariners course?

      I searched online and found the images. It took me some time but was worth it. There is a pre made pack you can purchase on Amazon but it got bad reviews. That’s why I decided to make my own.

    Why doesn't the John Boat count towards your small vessel sea service time? I'm currently working on getting my OUPV and filling out my sea service forms, and a considerable amount of my days are on a 14.5 footer. I can't find anything that says certain vessels don't count towards this, so I'm curious?

      I only had a trolling motor on it so it wasn’t really a motorboat

      There were some sets available for sale online but I read the reviews and they were terrible. So I found those images online and made my own. It was a long process of saving and pasting images.

      Amazon sells them. The best set I ever had was from the military, but those are long gone.

    One thing confused me. You said that you had to serve on some boats in the past. I would like to get sailing offshore boat for my self. Do I need a captain license ? Never sailed before. Thanks!

      I would think you would only need the license if you were carrying paying customers, unless there are other circumstances I’m not aware of.

    When you take the course and pass the test, how long is that good for? Say you passed and then applied a year or two later, does that still work?

    Congrats Capt Sands~! Most people take the course first and then fall on their face trying to sift through the paperwork nightmare. You can always apply for the license first before completing the course (no matter what school you are using to complete the exams and get the diploma!)     How does the testing work? Is it all tied to your online courses? Do you have to take the test in person or is it online? Do test cost in addition to the course? How many times can you take the test? Once you pass the class, is there another test to take? Thanks.

      I was able to take the test online, it was during Covid. Though I think you can still take it online. Everything on the test was in the MLS so I studied the course and did fine on the exam. After you pass, you’re done with testing but still have to submit all the paperwork to the coast guard.

    Hi! Congrats! I received my medical certificate about a month ago (May 12th). How much longer after that did it take for you to receive your license? It's been about a month and I haven't received it yet. Thank you.

      I went through Mariners Learning System. They gave quizzes after each module just to prove the info was learned, but the final exam was given after all four modules were completed.

      3. Also lets say you pass 3 out of 5 modules, you then only need to complete the remaining 2.

    What about if I already have a twic card and a physical card valid for 2 years?

      I would assume if you have a twic card your good with that. Not really sure about the physical because they asked for things I’ve never had at a physical before, like the color blind test. I’d probably check with them first.

    Second rewrite I cannot believe how much information they want you to learn to take people out fishing it seems like to me this is just a way to protect the money you’re doing a beautiful job explaining this I’ve never seen this much detail in the video this quick I’ve been on boat since I was 12 years old and never used any of this information and Ben and Ffoggs and made it back home without GPS crazy to me I know people that got this license that I wouldn’t allow to drive my boat beautiful job

    I got a question I have like 137 days of sea time do I still have to wait for a whole year to get my 6 pack ? Or could I use the 90 days from that ?

      You’ll need to have a minimum of 360 days boating experience. Ninety of those days must have occurred in the last three years.

      Do you have to have an endorsement?
      USsail is offering their classes. It doesn't seem like they have the books. Should I take the Mariners Learning program instead?

      @@Victoriaearth143 I can’t really compare because I only did mariners. I liked that mariners had the books plus audio files so I could listen as well. I would say, I still supplemented that course by watching CZcams videos, especially US Captains Training

      I do know as part of my physical I was required to take a color blind test. Not sure what would be considered passing though.

      You have to add your Masters license. I’m not sure how much more difficult it is though have heard of captains who go one after the other. It does require more boating time on the water.

      Yes, best money I spent. I could have done it myself. However, they went through my paperwork and submitted for me. They caught a few mistakes that I made ahead of time which would have cost me a lot of time resubmitting. So it was worth it to me.

      I guess it depends on the work you want to get. For me, I give scenic tours over the summer. I make decent money between the pay and tips. Better tips if we run into a pod of dolphins:)

      @@ft6972 if I remember correctly, it wasn’t observed but I wasn’t allowed to flush the toilet

      @@ft6972 it was pretty straight forward as I remember. Blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels. They want to know what meds you take, stuff like that. However, there was a color blind test. They did ask me about previous surgeries. I had a torn meniscus at one point but it wasn’t an issue.
      Having said that, I do have a friend who now has a heart condition. He’s been a captain for years but they wouldn’t renew him because of it.

      @@SandsintheSurf So I've been rejected multiple times for color blindness (red/green deficiency btw), I saw that the coast guard will only allow color blind individuals to operate during the day. Is that the case?

    No such license exists. No such thing as a "Captains" license. No such thing as a "Six Pack" license. It's an OUPV. Operator of a Uninspected Passenger Vessel
