  • My friend had owned this Audi for nearly 10 years, it has 388k on the clock and has never let him down, he says he will probably never replace it. I was keen to find out if they really did make these cars to last forever and I was pretty impressed.

An incredible workhorse. The 1.9 TDIs are fantastic engines. I have a 1998 MK4 Golf with the 1.9 TDI which was my workhorse for over 10 years and has now done 335k miles and is still going strong. With regular maintenance, they’ll go forever 👍

What a faithful, functional reliable workhorse! Just like the Marina Estate used to be!😊
You're right about the screens in modern cars,! Another thing that baffles me is those blinding headlights! Surely they are dangerously bright, it's like they're on permanent full beam. When a modern car goes over a bump it looks like the driver is flashing😮 (his headlights!) I wonder how many accidents have been caused by that happening at junctions.

I had the saloon version of this with the legendary PD engine. Only got rid as I wished I had the estate for practicality. I remember when they came out the rear end was unique. Brilliant car, this has made me miss mine!

And another splendid car review. Worthy of praise. These so called car reviewers who write in tabloids etc need to watch out coz you're on their tails.
As for touchscreens etc. Yes you do have a valid point But. They're very useful indeed. For example satnav. You have to stick a satnav unit on your windscreen with its suction cup thingy. First, That satnav can obscure vision through the windscreen. Yes even if placed at the lowest right side of the screen. Plus the suction thingy Always leaves that ugly ring.
Just because 'modern' cars have those infotainment screens doesn't mean they detract from concentration of driving. My 2007 car has an infotainment screen but it doesn't detract me from driving.
Just thought id put my 2 penneth in 😊😊

At work I've been given a 1970 Audi 100 Coupe which was given to us by the Daughter of the original Owner. It runs and drives actually pretty good. It has been looked after by it's Family and Mechanics for the past 53 years. Brand New it cost $4385.90 according to the original Window Sticker. It's White with a Red Vinyl Interior. I drive a 1985 Audi 100 Wagon which is my work car.... it's used for the occasional trip to the other Yards and for local errands. It's ten times more beaten up then your test car featured in the Video. If you or anybody has $12.000 the '70 Audi Coupe can be yours 🤑💰😁😋!

Love this era of Audi. We had a T-Reg A4. Like you say well before they went silly. I really like the understated design. If you get the high-spec model with the nice leather and inserts the interior was lovely. If you had a battery voltage gauge on the dash you were in a good one! Slightly boring but that's the point. It's a thinking man's car that has nothing to prove but makes you feel good in a cerebral way and outlasts everything! 😊 On a strange side not... I'm waxing lyrical about the Audi but our newer Passat which has all the same qualities I find utterly tedious. I've never understood that. The madness of the mind eh! 😂

'You'd buy an Audi if you didn't have a moustache!' 😁
A proper German car where everything just works. In the late 80s an experienced mechanic friend of mine was over here working at a fairly prestige car garage. An Audi Quatro came in for engine rebuild - my mate concluded it was the best engineered car he had ever worked on. In those times, it did not seem surprising.
I could not agree more with Mustard about touch screens and associated crap. Just give me a simple switch for everything!
A great Mustard-review of a pre nob-ed era Audi. It does look a bit bland but compared to most modern cars that's a huge plus! I would not be surprised if any new Audi became kaput long before this faithful old one.

Lovely Jubbly video Paul and I do agree with you to a point. No you don't need all these screens with apps on, but unfortunately you won't be doing the driving in the new cars, AI will be and it's turning into a world that's going to change very quickly if some people have their way.

Very much like the Passat B5.5 I have the a4 a bit shorter my a4 is on 183500mls I really enjoyed the review on this car I almost bought one of them myself The door sound reminds me of my own I have had the 1998 A4 the engine in this car you are reviewing is a non Pd a really reliable engine I had it in my Passat B5 I believe its AFN it will carry onto around 500thosand miles no problem. The a4 b5 I had over 240 thousand on the clock and carried on to 300 no problem there not fast but can be remapped. My current Audi is the 1.9 Pd that has been remapped to 170bhp for fuel economy is does 60mpg carry's all my tools and a jack that can lift 3 ton its cheaper to tax than a van it has privacy glass in the rear and probably when new would have cost around £22000 when new. To me its a work horse i know you have seen my Audi as i have done videos on it i just wish you could do a test drive of it so you could make a comparison Its coming on for 20 years old and still can keep up with most newer cars.

    • @ProjectNigel

Well the R8 first came out in 1989, so that is quite a bit before this A6. Good point though.

    That's from a time when I didn't detest Audi's and when the 4 rings didn't stand for C*CK.
Efficient and uneventful but as this proves, built to do a job with minimal fuss.
Big lump to push along with same lump that went in a Golf or even smaller Fabia. But it's still going which is testament to a time when Audi wasn't just a badge engineered VW driven by people desperate to keep up with the Jones's
