  • An interesting but pointless challenge? Maybe, but I wanted to highlight the difference it makes by simply reading the road ahead.
    The challenge:
Drive from Blackstone Edge, along the B6138 to Mytholmroyd and back. First time with 'normal' driving, second time driving as economically as I can.

When you think about the efficiency of fuel, it is very impressive. A gallon, an amount that will lightly fit under your arm in a fuel can, but can carry a large vehicle and us over 60 miles, that is supreme efficiency and an excellent yield of a chemical into mechanical power and momentum.

    • @ProjectNigel
      @ProjectNigel  Před 26 dny +2

Petrol and diesel are both highly efficient fuels.

    • @manuelhung7571

@@ProjectNigel Us humans are so inefficient in contrast. We consume more than ½ gallon of food and water per day and can only move ourselves around covering less than perhaps a few miles per day on average.
If only we had evolved to run on crude oil derivatives.

My car has an economy gauge, a special dial that shows me how economically I am driving. Lots of cars have them, my last car had one, but this one seems especially thought provoking. It’s interesting to see just how cruising at high speed uses so much more fuel, the difference between 65 and 85 on this gauge is quite startling but the main difference between this economy gauge and the one in my BMW is the way this one drops like a rock in a Road Runner cartoon when you touch the brakes. The BMW one seemed content with me braking, after all at the time of braking I’m not using any fuel, but the Volvo one makes quite a point of telling me that braking is bad for my economy. So I’m in agreement with you and with Volvo here, braking is bad for economy. It’s a good job my car is very good in fuel so I can put the money I save on diesel towards paying for all the little crashes I’m going to have. Someone should make doner kebab flavoured sausages.

An interesting place to be; pity the weather wasn't behaving itself! What also interests me is what wildlife the area attracts? As an avid birder, what birds turn up? I recall watching a youtube clip of Stonehenge and seeing a Great Bustard come into the picture!

Great bird life around here. I regularly see short-eared owls and barn owls. Obviously lots of curlew, lapwing, golden plover etc. meadow pippits, skylark, linnets and good twite populations.

My dear old late dad always used to moan that his Berlingo multispace diesel wouldn't anywhere near the book mpg figures. It was was useless trying to explain to him that if you have the full length vinyl roof always open with the air conditioning on and were driving like you stole it then the car was probably going to struggle!

I am off to Madrid this afternoon , 400 km , i am going to use my little 1.9 TDI Cordoba Estate. Should easily get over 80 mpg if i drive well. The big audi is impressive and in the wet

I hate that when people dab the brake pedal for every curve in the road , drive the car and let it flow .
I can only dream of those economy figures in my 2.4 petrol Accord.

I always derive a certain smugness through achieving good fuel economy. Part of the fun of a roadtrip for me is seeing how far i can go on a small amount of cash.
When opening the window to see better, did you also turn the stereo down as everyone knows that helps you see better too.

No news to me 😂😂😂. One of the reasons I drive an Audi 😂😂. I regularly get 64mpg. About 49mpg around the city. I have seen 140mpg when going down hills. Which I think is rather optimistic but I get around 700 miles to a tank of diesel. 😊

Very good average uphill down hill mpg using two different driving styles. Just shows diesel is far better than electric vehicles. EVs would probably short out and catch fire or have so.e sort of electrical failure in those foggy damp conditions. The future is diesel, and may be Audi.

I've long suspected that driving downhill would improve fuel economy. Nice to be able to have this confirmed through rigorous scientific testing and analysis. From now on I am driving downhill everywhere.
