I tend to wonder what a DPD interview
would be like... you turn up, drive around
the yard and they notice you can't drive and
say "when can you start" 😂😂😂
That junction with 4 give away signs is insane. 😮
*Laughs in American*
I can't fathom why they don't put a mini roundabout there
You treat it just like a mini roundabout except you can drive over the central portion.
It's a squareabout.
You can say that again !
your car at the end is a 1937 Standard Flying Ten. Bonnie & Clyde were killed in a 1934 Ford Model 40B Fordor Deluxe V8 that they had stolen in 1934.
Google search has a picture at a show and says it's a Standard 9
12:45 , we don't drive on the left , I've always believed we drive on WHAT'S left
My dad always said that there is no modern traffic law that says you MUST drive on the left. All it says in the Highway Code is 'keep to the left'!
😂Too many parked vehicles.
The 4 way junction without any indication is unusual but when I was learning to drive 60 years ago my instructor advised me that at any junction with blind spots you should make use of reflections in shop windows to check blind spots for traffic. Certainly more difficult these days with so many shops having shutters but worth remembering
Looks like the trees down your way are more mobile than the England players. What a pile of shit it's been.
Who has the right-of-way at 4 way stop in the UK?
At four-way intersections with stop signs for all drivers, vehicles should proceed in the order of first to arrive, first to proceed. If you come to a four-way at the same time as another vehicle or vehicles, yield to any vehicle on your right.
We don't have 4-way stop junctions in the UK. Certainly, there are no 'order' rules like there are in the US. Although technically, if there are give way lines, the first vehicle over the line gains priority, just the same as a mini-roundabout really.
Unmarked junctions are even worse!...
Rule 146
Adapt your driving to the appropriate type and condition of road you are on. In particular in side roads and country lanes look out for unmarked junctions where nobody has priority.
@paulhoad1131 or there is another way to look at it and think that no one car ever has right of way over another and that you proceed when it is safe and that you will not cause a collision. That is also the approach by the Highway Code in the preamble to the general rules before rule 103.
@@shm5547 we do have them in the uk as i have seen at test one of them
@@paulhoad1131 where?
08:24 looks like the chitty chitty bang bang car
The guy that got behind you at the lights. I’ll agree with you that 95% of the time he’s being a numpty, but if he’s second in line & the road layout is how it is there he is assuming you are going into the box to turn right so he can pass you that way. Anyone further back in “your” lane that wants to go straight is a numpty, especially if there are other cars turning right behind you.
100% of the time he is being perfectly sensible to use that lane in that circumstance. He would only be obstructed by idiots that cant use the right turn correctly or would knowingly pull off really slowly to unnecessarily prove a point in which they are wrong about.
At 8:50, I could hear your indicator sounding in good time. The mitsubishi, I believe it was, should have known better. Conversely, I've seen people giving the impression that they are going straight ahead, only to then put on their indicator as the lights change. . .most infuriating!!
7:26 "Always an Aldi" dammit, Lidl...
The only thing worse than a bike in front and that is a bunch of bikes in front that are determined to stay as a bunch. 🚲
@steamhammer2k but don't you realise that if that bunch was single , it would be at least twice as long and therefore much more difficult to overtake?
I drove through the Mad Mile and That Roundabout today. I was anticipating action but was utterly disappointed.
She could smell your batteries burning, that's how she knew.
I have an inkling the car @2.23 is a Lagonda, due to the shape of the grille badge, although at first I thought it was an Alvis,so what do I know!
3:51 you'd be surprised how much tyre noise carries.
at the clip with the traffic lights you turned right with. i feel that one is different because you have you right turn box instead of waiting in the lane to turn right. so you wouldn't have been in his way for long and the road markings do say that he can go straight there. it's a use all road space sinario
Agree, I see no wrong there and no aggresiveness, more like an opinion.
I quite agree. To say he should have moved off slowly is childish. The idea is to get more cars through the junction so the lights can change a bit quicker.
Greetings from Casablanca Morocco to my beloved nation, the Brits ❤

I live in gt bookham ,some people call it a squareabout, most people travelling along lower road think they have right of way.coming down the highstreet you have to be very carefull when you cross the croossroads because of cars from your left.
Those 3 or 4 give way junctions are quite common in Ireland
8:11 - I guess you could call that a "Lidl" mistake...
😁
hue hue hue
Ye, was in the wrong, ofc.

@2.24 It's Chitty Chitty bang bang in disguise 😂 🚙
My Lexus hybrid makes more noise running on batteries than petrol at low speeds. You don’t hear it with the windows shut, but she would have done all right.
7:45 Dangerous overtake. Dangerous driver.
I would have thought a 4 way give way would be first come first served and if you arrive at the same time then give way to the right
This reminds me of a law that (used to be? ) in Kansas USA, and that was If two trains approach one another at a crossing, they must both stop, and neither was allowed to start up again until the other had gone.
The petrol head moment car two looked like
an old Rolls Royce... i could be wrong!!!
I think it's a Bentley
7:49 seeing that, I would turn very slow to the right....🐌
4 way give way junction - no one has priority!
The grey car at the end was a 1937 Standard with a 1057cc petrol engine. As for Plod at 18:14 they have so much crap on their Joe 90 "utility" belts, they can hardly move their arms to turn the wheel. Hence the very many point turn.
I'm looking forward to the live drive Tony 😊
An old way of seeing who has priority at a junction , ( 4.40 ), is to look at camber of road. If your camber goes across junction and other sides right n left are against yours, then you are on primary road across junction and they give way to you. I was taught this for when snow falls and road markings covered. Look at curve of snow coverage on junction and see which direction it links up to. If against your camber then other road has priority and you give way.
Good idea, but have we got the time? what with Mr honker honking for you to get an effin move on!
The car that Bonnie and Clyde got killed in was a Ford deluxe leather seats
Many thanks for sharing with us Tony. Always great to see quality driving!!!!!!!! 😅😅😅
If the clip car at 3.00 is the chitty look alike, then the original car was built by Count Louis Zborowski in the early 1920s.
@2:21 - it really looks like a 1934 Alvis Speed 20 SC Vanden Plas Tourer, or another similar Alvis, the bonnet ornament and the bar across the grille is the give away, I might be wrong, but I do think this is one type of Alvis or another?
Thanks The London Dash Cam 🚕😊👍
Watching this video later than most so apologies for my tardiness…
4 way give ways are an interesting one but the most important thing to remember is you are giving way to vehicles already on the carriageway. So if someone enters before you then you give way. That doesn’t mean, like some do with roundabouts, you can accelerate to be there first as that is just idiotic
One other thing is that from your perspective, it is a cross junction so you should be giving way to anyone that will be crossing your path from either side
One last consideration is, despite being marked, is this the same as an unmarked junction where nobody has ultimate priority? After all when traffic lights aren’t working it becomes an unmarked junction despite there being markings 🤷🏻♂️
Whatever the answer, it is designed to slow everyone down on approach and make everyone more aware of each other 👍
That 4 way junction will never work in the UK, especially in the London area. I spent a couple of years in South Africa (a long time ago) and 4 Way Stops were common. They were just like that junction and worked very well.
Surely the 4 way give way should be treated as a mini roundabout
Re the pedestrian and knowing that Tony is behind them. Electric cars make a lot of tyre noise. When I'm cycling I can hear them behind me.
5:00
I believe these junctions are treated like mini roundabouts (just without the markings) where those who arrive first directly opposite you and to your right, are given priority.
Like all junctions however, these should still be approached with caution but especially due to the limited visibility as you pointed out.
This could be the reason a roundabout doesn't exist here due to the blind spots and opportunists. Doesn't stop the driver at 6:00 taking a chance though...
4:15 Should be the order that you arrive I would think, same as a 4-way stop junction in many countries.
The 4 way give-way, is supposed to be a calming measure usually where it's not practical to stick a roundabout, mind they'd ignore that too! I like the live drives, although I usually pick them up later on.
4:30 its a Squareabout ;P hahaha, Always give way to those who got there before you unlike Roundabouts where its priority to the right.
Have they changed the advice in the HC on walking in the road? I've been in Wales and the vast majority seem to walk with the traffic coming from behind them rather than walking towards the traffic. Then they expect you to walk around them when they meet people that do know what you are supposed to do.
My first visit to your channel, but won't be the last. Your commentary is like listening to myself with a different accent 😁😁
15:10 Fantastic segue there from football to cyclists! 🤣🤣🤣
Due to the restricted sight line to the right, that second approach you made to the 4 way give way should be a stop
8:00 the highway code says you 'should not' overtake across a junction, or use the hatched area, but the give way markings are a 'must'. However, there was no issue, speeds and distances were ok.
10:20
DPD: Don't Please Don't
2:20 From what I can tell, this seems to be a Lagonda 2 Litre Speed Model (high chassis).
21:00 That's just your standard car. A 1937 Standard Flying Nine to be precise 😅 Research tells me the Bonnie & Clyde car was a Ford Model 40 B Fordor Deluxe V-8 but it does look similar from the front.
The 4 way junction at Bookham is a pain. I`ve been through it a few times, and I always treat it as a first arriving is first to go. Unfortunately, and it`s usually some posh Surrey senorita in a 4X4 barge, who thinks as they have a big motor with an equally big ego who goes anyway. I`ve met these junctions in America and it`s always first there has right of way. And God help you if you get it wrong.
That four-way junction has 'give way' lines and a black rectangle in the middle instead of a round white blob so obviously: It must be a Squareabout.
Maybe the Postwoman's Google maps mightve zoomed out after going over the bump so she's quickly zooming it back in
Only you could feature a Squareabout.
(And I love Lidl. Especially the middle aisle)
4-way stops are common in South Africa, and also in the USA I believe. It is quite simple to use, first come - first go. In German grid-pattern town centres you give way to the right, also simple. It just requires a bit of consideration for others, which, from watching your videos, is a rare commodity on British roads!
Ah yes! Just follow laws from another country...that's bound to work! Just imagine..."no officer, in the states / s. Africa they do such and such so that must apply to the UK too"...personally I'd rather follow what the give way lines are telling me and look for an opportunity to go when safe! Priority is given, not taken!
I lived as a child in the fifties 200yd to the left of the give-way crossroads as you were facing it in the latter part of the clip. In my day the road going across was Lower Road, while you were coming out of Church Road and facing the High Street. Because Lower Road was continuous I would feel it to be more important and have priority while the other roads are shorter connecting roads, though it is no longer marked that way. I bet the woman that crossed in front of you thought the same.
Here in NZ we occasionally get 4 way Stop signs, (I haven't seen it with Give Way, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist), and general rule is straight ahead traffic has priority over right turning traffic. If vehicles coming from opposing directions both want to enter the same road the left turner goes before the right turn, and you wouldn't turn left or right pulling in front of a vehicle going straight ahead.
I haven't seen any 4 way Stop or Give Way intersections (except for roundabouts) here in New Zealand. Our small uncontrolled 4 way intersections usually have Stop or Give Way signs on 2 (opposing) sides while the 2 remaining sides are treated as the priority road.
@@dallasfrost1996 the one that readily springs to mind is in Riccarton, at the intersection of Rata and Remu streets.
@@iallso1 Very interesting. I personally can't say I've ever seen one myself, I know they're very popular in the United States though.
10:37 I would still think it’s priority to the right otherwise it would cause a right problem if everyone thinks that they have the right to go first from all sides.
8.52 To be fair, you were turning right and if the car behind going straight on had stayed behind you, you should move over to the right turn lane so leaving him room to continue straight on. I don't think the 2nd car, the Mitsubishi, did anything wrong.
Great videos ❤
I wonder if the 4 way give way with the squareabout in the middle is an experiment? They're quite rare but you will find road layouts set up as an experiment to see if they work. Most disappear after a couple of years never to be seen again, but some go on to be the norm. One of the places that advance stop lines for bikes was tried as an experiment was on the Uxbridge Road between Hayes and Hillingdon - those obviously were counted a success. The experimental ones in Hayes were for bicycles _and_ solo motorcycles, the latter having been dropped form the design that was rolled out. Not that the 20 minuters on scooters seem to have realised this.
Weird junction really needs a mini roundabout so it makes sense. I’d give way to the right as a rule.
As for the guy who went through on the mini roundabout, he did apologise as he probably didn’t see you & I agree that an apology alleviates a situation. Mistakes happen. As long as there’s no issue, fair enough
Tony, thanks for highlighting the communication that us good cyclists indulge in.
06:00 Would it not make more sense for that 4-way give way to be configured as a 4-way stop - at least then all drivers could better assess the situation.
Still with you though, crazy like it is...
Not in the UK, since Stop signs are rarely used. The solutions are 1) make it a roundabout, 2) prioritise one of the roads.
5:56, we Dutch would have taken the signs away. We have the rule: right goes first. So at 5:56 the car coming from the right has priority. With the cyclists it went okay: you went right and they went right. We have many of such crossings. Because it has all the same signs, they and the white striping can be taken away. Less maintenance costs.
You can hear the tires of a car coming up behind you
6:58 If you are a bicycle, that VW van doesn't stop.
7:37 they were wrong to make that overtake.
Great stuff as always stu some really nice motors an the van is a ford thames love an respect ❤
@3:59 Pedestrian is likely to be a School Teacher. They've got this ability to turn round in a millisecond to unerringly throw a piece of chalk at the misbehaving muppet.......

Mrs Magoo.... nah. I agree. It doesn't sound right. Here's a possible alternative...... Olive - from On The Buses - as she couldn't see 💩 rofl.
Good one as always, Tony.
I'm usually laissez-faire about TV sitcoms from the 70s and 80s - it was a different era, and the humour reflected that time. But 'On The Buses' was just crass, vulgar, and unpleasant.
@@DraftySatyr No issues here. Different Generation and, for what it might be worth, I do agree that it was Misogynistic.
Anna Karen - Olive - was in the long running EastEnders and at least one Carry On film to the best of my recollection. Very much under-rated but loved by the British Public.

That was a Lagonda Rapide Tony 👍
nope, sorry I don't believe you are correct, never seen one with red spokes, plus they only made 25, and no mid bar across the grille, like this, car, I'd hazard a guess from the blurry images, it really looks like a 1934 Alvis Speed 20 SC Vanden Plas Tourer or another similar Alvis, the bonnet ornament and the bar across the grille is definitely their style of car! it was a bit too blurry though, but I'm rarely wrong on these matters. please correct me if I am?
A 4-way give way is actually unlawful - the law clearly says that you can't have give ways on all sides of a junction. A mini roundabout would be better. As for who has priority, I would treat it as an unmarked junction and just negotiate with the other drivers on a case-by-case basis - don't assume there are any rules (because there aren't any).
@ado543 I agree with you there. The preamble to rules 103-158 says no motorist has the right of way over another and you should basically always proceed cautiously.
The four-way junction is in Great Bookham, Surrey, junction of Lower Road and High Street if anyone wants to have a look on Google Maps or even IRL.
4 Yields is a 4 way stop with priority to the RIGHT
4:49 Whoever arrives at the junction first should have the option to make the first move. If you come to a four-way at the same time as another vehicle or vehicles, yield to any vehicle on your right.
edit: that junction needs changing
I googled the four way give way situation. Its common in the US but "doesn't exist" in the UK. It might be worth contacting your local Highways department as I suspect this is an illegal set-up. Its not in the Highway Code that's for sure.
That's a proper who dares wins junction in the thumbnail

If a mini roundabout is less expensive than traffic light how cheap is a squareabout?
Always give to the right. Some junctions should have stop-sings
The last few months, i've been making an effort to try and not let people wind me up with there dumbass driving. I've tried to be patient and understanding when people do stupid things. And guess what ? I'll get where i'm going just the same but it will be a more pleasant journey and i will feel lot more chilled out. 😊
Good post. I advocate that also. It's not worth getting warm in the collar department over silly motoring errors.
Why wouldn't they put a roundabout there?
There’s no give way anymore…..it’s everyone for themselves🙄
Definitely should have made it difficult for the car that got behind you when turning right at the lights, call it education.
The petrol head moments are , firstly a MG and secondly , a Morgan ( possibly).
Third car that's ancient is a no eyed dear! Scuse the pun😅
It's just a square roundabout
I've not seen a 4 way give way so I googled it, it's first come first serve but priority goes to the right so technically that woman was ok.
4:25 is effectively a roundabout without the actual markings for a roundabout - it's a very strange (and frankly stupid) way of laying out a junction, and because it's not an actual roundabout, I don't believe there are any official rules regarding its usage, probably because the original legislators never predicted that anyone would ever lay out a junction like that
@19:27 You can't Bark there sir!
Rule of the road give way to traffic coming from your right
😮 Tony we got pulled out on by a lady who almost didn't look at us
7:38 No question, the green felt frog overtaking at the entrance to LIDL was wrong. The chevroned area is there _precisely_ because the road planners _don't_ want people overtaking there, precisely because of the likelihood of someone turning right as you were. The only reason they won't have used _solid_ white lines there (which would make it an offence to enter the chevroned area except in an emergency or to avoid an accident) is that LIDL will undoubtedly have HGVs turning in and out that will, because of their length, need to stray into the chevroned area to make the turn. Rules 167 and 130 apply.
Only they did use a solid white line, which it did drove across.
@@MadderstheFox No, it's dashed. [Checks] Yup, 7:43, dashed.
@@MadderstheFox No, the chevroned area is surrounded with a dashed line, that's the line in question which determines whether you can enter that area if _necessary_ or not at all. 7:43 See rule 130:
"Areas of white diagonal stripes or chevrons painted on the road. These are to separate traffic lanes or to protect traffic turning right.
● If the area is bordered by a broken white line, you should not enter the area unless it is necessary and you can see that it is safe to do so.
● If the area is marked with chevrons and bordered by solid white lines you MUST NOT enter it except in an emergency."
@@ianmason. Those hash markings are bound by a solid white line, which the perp crossed to exit.
@@MadderstheFox It's the _enclosing_ lines that matter to the definition of what kind of chevroned area it is, not the terminating line. Do you really think that the intention of the road planners is that an HGV properly using the chevroned area to make a turn there is to not permit them to drive over the terminating line? They can use the rest of the box if necessary but must not drive over that _one_ line? It's moot anyway as they have not met the test of _necessity_ for permission to use a chevroned/striped area.
Good old Dangerous Parcel Delivery 😢
Day of the triffids
Tony I get moaned at for using my handbrake rather then clutch control at traffic lights or emerges. Is there such thing as over use of the handbrake? Plus I was taught to use the handbrake rather the clutch control.
Same here. Don't use the clutch as it causes more wear & tear.
Hand brake or parking brake these days is cheaper to fix than a clutch. I was always telling the wife to use the sodding hand brake, not sit on the clutch. In fact I got so fed up with saying it, I got her an EV to use, problem solved.
@@johnnodge4327 I passed 1 yr ago maybe teachings have changed to handbrake instead of clutch.
Ye gods no! Using the clutch to hold a vehicle in place rather than one of the braking systems is absolutely the _wrong_ thing to do. Anybody who's moaning at you for using the handbrake at traffic lights badly needs to book a refresher course with a proper driving instructor. Sure, you need good clutch control when it gets to the pulling away bit, and I hope that you don't mean that you're using the handbrake as a substitute for that, but the 'keeping still' bit is very, very definitely handbrake territory.
@@michellesimpson4364 I passed [mumble] years ago when dinosaurs still roamed the earth and the world was in black and white - I was taught the proper use of the handbrake and would have had a proper telling off for trying to hold a car on the clutch.
And the one at the end was a Standard (later became Triumph) but no idea which model 😁

14:58 One of my favourites: thats not a mini roundabout silly! It’s got extra bricks in the surface so it’s not a mini roundabout or a roundabout.
its a squareabout, in this case give way to those who got there before you.

I’ve got gigabit and I’m getting 1440p
They 'developed' a bandwidth saving 'feature' because of covid. So that the increased usage of CZcams wouldn't crash the Internet.
But really, it's to save them bandwidth costs.
@@dominicfindlay It seems they are trying to save more and more - I dont mind 1080p, the difference isnt huge, but recently several videos have started in 720; and one in 640!!
