One way to view the ending is that they do go back to their lives. The snow globes are just how Krampus keeps an eye on everyone.

So just one question. Make that two. When everyone had those looks on their faces, does that mean it was real or was it really just Max's dream? And does Krampus have snow globes of everyone in the world or just the ones who completely give up on the spirit of Christmas?
Skard Thum My interpretation is that the faces they make is remembering what happened to them the night before, like remembering a dream that really happened. I also believe Krampus keeps globes of only the families who have lost the Christmas Spirit and have been put on “warning”.
That's the ending for me.
It really was a twisted telling of a Christmas Carol and Max going out and confronting Krampus head on is something that doesnt seem lije anyone else would do. He learned to love his family regardless of their flaws and Krampus saw this lesson learned but of course he isnt letting them all go that easy.
So now they know he will be watching them and what transpired may have felt like a dream but it did truly happen.
For Everyone that’s confused. Krampus does hear Max’s wish and sets the family free on Christmas morning. He watches them thru a snow globe but does spare them. Max learned his lesson. At the time omi may have not but max did. He wanted to scare max so he made it seem like he thru him in hell but if you watch the whole movie, at the end krampus watches over them and everyone returns home. Is krampus evil? Maybe but if u read up on the folklore then actually he rides with Santa on Christmas eve. He is Santa’s counter part. St Nicholas rewards the good kids and krampus punishes the bad ones. Like omi said, he is the shadow of st Nicholas. God I love this film lol
I thought they where trapped in some globe at the end of the film, but the one thing I'm confused out is max's grandmother she once watched her family get taken by Krampus as she wished for the same wish as max but I don't know why Krampus would even take her especially because she already learned her lesson, and was spared, and liked by Krampus so I don't really know why Krampus has the intention of enslaving her.
Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house not a creature was stirring not even a mouse. As Santa rides into town but he has his faithful counterpart Krampus. Good old Saint Nicholas with a sack full of toys to reward the good boys and girls for all their good deeds. But there are some who aren’t jolly, some who aren’t nice, Krampus make sure that they pay the price. (Krampus with brace knuckles with his name on them.)
@@seps3087 Because Omi was basically caught in the blast radius of Max's wish/loss of Christmas spirit. She was left as a reminder of what happens when hope is lost, but she had failed to convey that message to her family. So she was no longer of any use to Krampus, plus she was old. He wanted a fresh face for the next generation.
And yeah, Krampus trapped them in their own pocket world in the snow globe, but he did the only kindness he had within his powers to give Max. Krampus can only take, not give back. But when Max showed he did in fact have a little bit of Christmas spirit left, by offering himself to free everyone else, Krampus granted Max the last wish he had had, to have a family Christmas again like they use to. Basically like Groundhogs day though, in that they'll wake up every day and its Christmas again. As to whether they remember that, or their memories get reset each time, is up for debate. Max and Omi obviously remembered what had happened, and everyone else seem to have a vague, nightmarish memory of what went on. All in all an ending that leaves you asking more questions than it answers, which is awesome.

If you watch the ending, Krampus technically does unite Max with his family again, even if it is in one of thousands of Krampus' snowglobes.
If the comic is the canon ending then he actually is just keeping an eye on them through the snowglobe did bring them back.
...But if they fuck up again he'll be waiting.

Max was not acting stupid. Stupidity has an actual definition other than the one you think. He thought he could at least reason with the Krampus. After all, he’s the shadow of saint Nicolas. Krampus gave his family a second chance because he was being lovely
when max goes up to Krampus and catches his attention. Krampus is probably more or less confused by what this kids doing, so its why he stopped his elves from throwing the other kid into the hole just to see who would make the first move, so when Max drops the metal fire poker, its why hes even more confused. so when Max finally offers himself up for the family, krampus stares at him for a bit. considering his offer for a bit, (even if hes faking it) he wipes the tear and even the elves are surprised. eventually the lighting brought Krampus back to what was going on and he just laughs at the this idiots efforts, but sees this self sacrifice as a good enough reason for them all to be let go. its why he throws Max into the hole as well. he sees that their punishment has been served and his job is done. he lets them go. the snow globe is just a way for him to make sure they dont screw up again.
@Maia McLaughlin I wouldn’t be surprised if Krampus changed the outcome of the underworld hole so that it returned everything back to normal. Kinda like a twisted wishing well which is why he literally made Max’s wish come true

Two points Id like to address from looking at the comments.
"I wish Santa would come to the rescue".
Santa and Krampus work together. Santa rewards. Krampus punishes. Both are just doing their job. They're not enemies.

The snow globes are simply tools he uses to keep an eye on everyone.
Back to my point about Santa and him working together, they're a part of the Christmas spirit. Krampus isn't like Satan where he gets the most benefits out of capturing souls. He gets his kicks by scaring and punishing the naughty. If they learn their lesson, then they're no longer on his list and they are left to Santa. And so the cycle continues and balance is appeased.

I love the design of Krampus, the elves and the demonic rams. It's obvious they are all wearing fake masks and false skins to make themselves look like yuletide mythical creatures, but underneath there is nothing but eldritch horror. Krampus himself looks like he's wearing Santa's tanned hide. I wish this would get a sequel or two, I know some stuff ended up on the concept art floor that I'd love to see brought to life.
The ending can be interpreted in two ways: either they received a warning and get another chance or they're forever trapped in that snow globe. For me, the latter seems the most obvious. Why? First and foremost: Krampus never gives, he only takes. Second, the look on their faces when they realize it. To me that's more than obvious.
The creator confirmed they were given a second chance.

While Krampus wearing a mask of Santa is a fascinating design, I do wish we got to see his real face. Seeing his eyes at 2:19 was pretty cool.

I think the ending is obviously them being spared because Max learned his lesson. If he hasn't learned his lesson then Max would be the only one spared like his grandmother. He also doesn't take the innocent, like the dog or baby. Krampus just does his job.
While everyone else was in hell when the grandmother failed and she had to live with the guilt. So they're being monitored now for their next screw up or he watches everyone regardless of if they screwed up. Either way they're on thin ice. I thought it was a very clever ending and movie wish there was more.

It might look like it but it isn't. It's a reset portal. At the end, it shows that they have returned home, but he gives them that jingle bell to remind them what happens when they mess up. They aren't trapped in the snowglobe. That snowglobe is like an American iPhone watching a video in Africa. They are indeed back on earth.

The real Nightmare Before Christmas
Since Krampus and Santa both work together on Christmas, I believe that those snowglobes are how Santa also monitors families and the ones that are troublesome are given to Krampus to monitor until they're faithful enough to be returned to Santa's watch. Pretty sure Krampus also lives in his own section of Santa's workshop and those monsterized elves and reindeer were just Santa's elves and reindeer but made to look scarier by Krampus's magic to fuifill their job of scaring naughty kids straight.
