Why South Korea wants a tiny piece of Russia

  • Russia is a country which has multiple border disputes with its neighbours, and soon there might be another one with a country which doesn’t technically have a border with Russia: South Korea. Subject of this developing territorial dispute is the former island known as Noktundo or No’ktundo (Ноктундо in Russian and 녹둔도 in Korean).
Since mediaeval times, Noktundo was a remote outpost of the Korean state (Chosen or Joeson). However, centuries later, when the Tuman river (or Tumen river) began changing its course, the island became permanently attached to the mainland which would become Russian territory in 1860 after the treaty of Aigun. Since then, the territory has been under Russian control - but recently voices calling for the return of Noktundo to South Korea are getting louder in the South Korean media and public.
In this video we’ll take a look at what this conflict is really all about, how it developed and what it means for the future of East Asian security politics - all through hopefully entertaining countryballs or polandballs.

The second point of this deal is beneficial for Russia, because sharing a border with S.Korea would be a fantastic idea for Russia, it's fascinating, that we could share border with Norway, Finland and South Korea at the same time. When mafia government will collapse, i don't think NK will collapse too, considering that they are singlehandedly supported by the pooh, so unfortunately, we will not have the longer border with you, but still, for normal democratic Russia there would be really no good reason to keep it to ourselves. So i hope in one day we will be able to cross our border with one step! ❤💙

In 2005 there was a demarcation of Russian-Chinese border, when control over a couple of islands on the Amur river with total area of 337 square kilometers was passed from Russia to China. The reason that was stated - to settle all border disagreements and to improve relations with China.
So I wouldn't say that passing control over such a small "island" is out of the question, but not in the current situation certainly.
Edit: since I keep getting replies about it - the phrase "not in current political situation" also includes the existence of two Koreas.

the problem lies within the 2020 "changes" to Russian constitution, which make it unlawful to give away any territory. unless these changes are revoked (and there's a good case for that in case any reformist/anti-Putin faction takes power, because 2020 "vote" (it should've been a referendum btw) is pretty much a sham, not even counting voter fraud) the current Russian government can just raise their hands and say "no can do, look at our constitution"

As for the issue itself: never going to happen as the can of worms will be greater than that of Russia or South Korea.
By the same logic Germany can ask both Poland and Russia to return all the land to Kaliningrad with the city itself to them as it was historically great German land and city.
Furthermore, Russia (even under sanctions) is still a powerful military and political force. Add to that the North Korean agreement that the land is now Russian and you get quite the impossible situation.

If this is really a contentious issue for South Korea, I have to wonder why the very first course of action isn't negotiating "Russia, Can we buy this exact plot of land from you for X money?" If it's not particularly valuable to Russia, then I'm sure there IS a price that would be acceptable. That price might be exceedingly expensive, but if SK wanted the land because its important to them (and not just because they "might" get it for free, which objectively speaking IS probably the actual reason, not to be a Korea-hater) then that transaction should theoretically still be favorable to both sides.

Because they can only think in the way they themselves think: that we Koreans will somehow try to claim that land, but Koreans are not cr4zy nor do we have interest or power to actually take over Chinese Northeast. CCP has more political reasons to do that historical revisionism mainly: in case North Korea collapses and possibly get absorbed by South Korea. They need every justification to control the North due to US army presence in the South, which will want to take part in whatever happens in the North. First of all, Japan is not disputing all of the Kurils, but only the southern part. And when I was on Iturup, I didn't notice any desire among the residents to become part of Japan. So I think that all the disputes in our region are greatly exaggerated. It seems to me that such a notion as historical territory cannot be the basis for redrawing maps, as it would bring blood and suffering to people living now, not to those who lived once. Besides, Japan has no historical justification for these territories, since Japan was an empire like Russia, and Russia simply managed to be the first to join the Kurils.

Now this is not considered a dispute. Probably because of the Soviet Union's help in the formation of the current China. If such a dispute arose, it would escalate into a war, because these territories are very important. Russia's policy over the past 200 years can be described as follows: "I'm looking for warm water."

8:00 "For Korea its value almost entire derives from it's symbolic character." Oh, no, here we go again. I guess that Russia thought the same about Ukraine. Also there are plenty symbolic valued territories which symbolism is shared between different parties. I don't think that all of those parties should go to into conflict because of some "symbolic" values, it's a symbol after all, it's only valued when people agree on it, so why not creating your own symbol. May be K-pop? Anyway, the North Korea as a symbolic territory should be the top priority for the South Korea.

You had me in the first half and lost me with the last sentence. The problem with both Korea's is that because it's a civil war, both nations have legal claims to the other side and every nation who fought for their Korea knows this. Paektu Mountain is a classic example of this, China had no choice but to have talks with BOTH Korea's on where the border runs on the mountain and fortunate for China, they got both Korean's to agree on the same set of lines which is rare. I agree to a degree that South Korea has to worry about North Korea first however it in order to have legal claim, they cannot do exactly what Pakistan and India has when Jammu and Kashmir was invaded by Pakistan to which Jammu and Kashmir went to India for military help and it to this day has been leading to who actually owns what because of the situation it was in. USSR technically created this problem by just assuming North Korea's view was good enough, I give credit to China for being a bit wiser. Because if North Korea ever gets annexed by the South, anyone with a brain will know that North Korean treaties are now pointless and would be stupid to assume the South would enforce them.

It is advantageous for North Korea to have at least a small but common border with Russia, because it will always be able to get help through it if it is needed and Russia decides to provide it and vice versa.North Korea can provide labor for the restoration of Donbass and the liberated regions, and Russia can send wheat and oil to North Korea. This is beneficial for both countries. Russia will always support North Korea, including with military might. while the US is present in the Asian region and has military bases in South Korea and Japan.Russian Russians and Anglo-Saxons will always be enemies now and in the future, regardless of the system (communism, monarchy or democracy, there is hatred on the ethnic principle between Russians and all Anglo-Saxons).

It'll become an issue possibly, after Korean reunification. But for now, Korea and Russia see eye-to-eye on other territorial issues. They support each other in terms of Russia's possession of the Kurile Islands and Korea's possession of the Dokdo Islands. Both are supportive with regards to Fukushima's radioactive waste disposal. Before Korea turns into a US neocon pawn against Russia, even after reunification, it has other more over-riding territorial claims on Tsushima against Japan and southern Manchuria against China. It'll need Russia's help on both fronts. Both Russia and Korea are not particularly trustful of Japan or China's intentions in the medium or long-term.
