  • Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the United States have stood unopposed at the top of the geopolitical food-chain. However, in recent times some have suggested that a new alliance is threatening the United State’s position, namely the one between China and Russia. In this video we’ll take a closer look at the Sino-Russian relationship. Are these two nations really building a strong alliance or are there problems which tend to be overlooked?

This video shows a really deep lack of understanding of Russia, of China and of the relations between them.
First you look at both from a Western point of view and see what you want to see.
When you see China challenging Russia in Central Asia you see what a westerner wants to see. What Russia see is that the influence of China helps to keep away US, UK and western powers.
    Do you see the difference?
When you see that China gets raw materials from Russia and benefits from them, do you want to know what Russia see?
That their raw materials are benefiting a nation that respect them, that does not interfere in their internal affairs and that it shares its enemies. So Russia is really happy to sell their raw materials to China.
And it’s also happy to buy consumer stuff from China, since the Russian industry has been always focused in military and hard industry stuff they lack production of stuff like coffe machines and so on.
They are totally happy to be able to buy a coffee machine from China and not from the West.
From the Chinese perspective, also is great to receive petrol, gas and raw materials from Russia, avoiding a possible blockade in the Malacca straits. As well as a possible future usage of a Russian dominate North route using the Russian ice breakers in the artic.
You can lie to yourself as much as you want, but Russia and China are closed friends and allies than any western alliance apart of the Anglosaxon five eyes.
They are indeed, allies, not vassals. As the European states are of the US.
And they totally share enemies and common interest, something that is not true even within the European Union. Where the interest totally change from east to west and north to south

There are indeed many disputes between China and Russia in history, but the Chinese people can distinguish between the ancient hatred and the immediate threat which is more important. The Chinese know very well who will benefit from the provocation of China Russia relations.
I quite agree with you on the industrial complementarity between China and Russia. In fact, Germany and Russia are also so complementary in industry, which has made Germany's brilliant economic achievements today. If the Germans do not cherish the economic benefits brought by Russia, the Chinese are willing to replace Germany
To tell the truth, isn't it the Americans who forced China and Russia into the same trench?

Russia and China are allies and friends now. They share enemies, view of the world, some goals…
And even more important, they don’t have points of combats.
The only possible conflict would be Manchuria, that is far less important for China than the South, Taiwan and so on

Ngl it's refreshing to see actually well put together and informative videos in this format as I find most of these semi-humorous channels about politics or history or whatever either ignorant or too simplistic, but this was actually very good. For example, China's paranoia about territorial integrity and the particularly Russian expansionist geopolitical strategy (in the west) is not something I had thought of as affecting relations between them, even though it seems so obvious now that you have pointed it out! I would not be surprised if this video ended up picked up by some lecturer for an intro to international politics class or something.

I think that this video missed the main point.
Both Russia and China make rules and they stick to them and that is why they are friends.
You cannot trust counties that cannot even follow their own rules.
US will always be a natural enemy because it makes rules and breaks them constantly depending on it's interest.
US can never have friends because no independent country trusts the US, the Us rules through fear.
Every other independent country has no choice but to either submit to the abusive husband or side with the US enemy.
What is happening in geopolitics would not have happened if the US followed their own rules and did not try to kill anyone who COULD resist, not that it did try to resist.
Both China and Russia did not choose to anger the US, the US tried to kill them because it feared their potential strength.
The result is that the US fears are becoming a reality sooner than expected.

There are some issues that two parties fundamentally cannot resolve. But there is no real need to resolve them.
China doesn't comment on Russian border chomping, Russia doesn't comment on Chinese separatists.
Neither side forces the issue. Neither wants to have a confrontation on the issue and neither needs to have a resolution on the issue.

Your videos are underrated and realy helpfull in understanding the geopolitics of the world. However your description of hard and soft power is only partly right. There are three ways to make person A make something for person B.
    1. You can force person A (military force, sanctions, interventions)
    2. You can pay person A (bribes, loans, embargos. China is currently doing this with the belt and road project. For example taking control over sri lanka's largest port)
    Or
    3. You can influence person A through persuation/attraction (in terms of nations this could be music, colture, movies, food, litterature, etc).
The two first point are what we call hard power, and the third point is what we call soft power. The difference between hard and soft power can be summarised quite well in this sentence, "There is more power in jeans and rock n' roll than there is in the entire red army" - Régis Debray

The relationship between 2 countries cannot be simply maps to the relationship between 2 persons. China and Russia both has their own interests based on their own situation. This is a general situation for any countries. For China, it is more focusing on its own way to become a developed country in next 50 years. With a 1.4 billion population, the growth of its economy would quickly make China to be one of the superpowers in this world. However, I don't think China has more interesting other than economics in the traditional territories of Russian's area. E.g. those mid-Asian countries or Mongolia . Chinese foreign policy is clearly non-interventionism. The Belt and Road Initiative is more focused on economics rather than politics. Please be aware China solved all border issue with all the ex-cccp countries back to 1990s.
For the question, are China and Russia allies? The answer is NO. But they are friends now. Even though they still have different interests like all the other countries, but there is no serious fundamental problems between these 2 countries. You would not easily expect they become enemies even if one day there is no more pressures from USA and its allies.

its a nitpick, and quite a subjective one, but in the beginning of the video there is a map with the "american" bloc, and it has Sweden included in it. Sweden was officially neutral and was not part of NATO, though there was of course an understanding that if we were attacked it would be from the soviets.

@@NiclasLoof Not really. Some 3rd world unaligned countries had more Soviet influence than American, and in fairness he did not include Yugoslavia in the Eastern block, so he probably shouldn't have included Sweden in the Western one either...

really? If Russia did not sell its oil to China, there is no where to go. USA CONTROL the oil price at a low level , just a little less than the cost to drill well in Russia. Besides, Resource / goods currency makes both Russia&China healthy economy (China has more cheap labor,Russia has massive resource). Remember , USA is sactioning both Russia&China and hoping China/Russia ally breaking so Americans can deal one by one.

China might be economically powerful, but their military is an absolute joke, unlike Russian one.
