  • Welcome to Episode 2 of the Geopolitics Snapshot, where we take a look at current geopolitical events that are shaping the world around us!
This time we take a look at China's president Xi Jinping's visit to Europe - specifically to France, Serbia and Hungary. This was his first visit to the continent since 2019, and the situation between China, the European Union and other European countries has changed quite a bit since then.
In Paris, Xi Jingping met with French president Emmanuel Macron and President of the the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, where they discussed issues like Chinese 'Overcapacity', Russia's invasion of Ukraine and trade relations.
Afterwards, Xi flew to Belgrade where he met with Serbia's president Aleksandar Vucic. Chinese-Serbian relations intensified quite significantly in the last years and during the visit, Serbia become the first European country to join China's "Global Community of Shared Future" Initiative. Another topic was the 25th anniversary of the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade during the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia.
Lastly, Xi visit Budapest where he met with Victor Orban where both leaders agreed to intensify relations and entered a strategic partnership. Soon, Hungary hopes to become a European hub for Chinese electronics, batteries and electric vehicles.

It's all very well to show us China's influence in the European Union, but the foreign country with the most influence is still the United States.
They've been spying on us for decades, Spain has expelled US agents from its territory, they have enormous control over data with their data center, they can legally collect data from EU citizens by law, they fight us in an "economic war"...
So I think, to be fair, it would be useful to show us this part of foreign influence.
And don't be naive, the US is trying and will try to push us into a conflict against China, even if it's not in our interest. As Europeans, we don't need to be in conflict with China, we need to be cautious of all foreign countries, but we can have relation with everybody, it is in our interests.

Serbian-Chinese relations go much, much deeper. The main difference is between the "Divine Right of Kings" and "Mandate of Heaven". I will simplify, the Chinese believe their rulers must come organically from the people (grassroots support), and the whole of Europe was ruled by 12 families of Germanic origins. This includes Vindsors and the Romanovs. The Chinese have a sort of "destiny" connected to the individuals ruling them (this includes emperors and communist leaders alike). Serbian aristocracy came from the people, they gave us freedom, and by merit (and destiny) they became our "aristocracy". Only Serbian aristocracy did not come from "bluebloods" mentioned above. The mechanism of picking leaders and of becoming a leader are the same in China as they are in Serbia. We had a lot of Hajduks and Uskoks (rebellious gangs under Turks) and they all placed their destinies in the competence of their leaders. It was always organic, never by rules and descent (privilege). For us (Serbs and Chinese) ruling is a combination of destiny and merit. Something slaveowners, slave traders, and aristocratic tyrants, uncountable to the "laws of the regular people", will never understand. That is our connection. And that is why we, the Serbs are "The nail that sticks out". The VIRTUE of Plato and Aristotle survives only in Serbia, China, and Ancient Greece and that is not something Anglo-Saxon imperialists like. We have the moral high ground. They propagate antiquity as the origin of Western Civilization, but they destroy everything a VIRTUE means in their conduct with the world. Let's not mention inheritance in Western politics. Kissinger is a Mayer (Rothschild by blood), and Stoltenberg is the son of Torvald. There are many, many examples of inheritance of privilege in the West. Undeserved privilege. Dinastical rulership of "the people or the sheep".

In the Chinese Mandate of Heaven, you must be righteous and moral. If you are not, then the Mandate will be taken from you. This would be droughts, disease, instability, and war. That would show the people that the rulers lost their Mandate and encourage the people to dispose of the bad rulers. That is how all the dynasties in China changed. It is so today. If enough "instability" and "bad luck" hits the country and the people, it is because of the mistakes of the Leadership. That is why in China they censor their "bad news" so much, and promote harmony and balance. There was this old Yugoslav movie "Valter defends Sarajevo". Back in the day, it was shown every year in China for holidays, just like we had "Home Alone" for Christmas on TV. In that movie, Valter (the partisan saboteur) is untracable. The nazis can't find him. In the end, the German officer says something like: "No wonder we can't find Valter, this city is Valter. Everyone is Valter". And that, my friend, is The Mandate of Heaven. If rulers are bad, the people start working on a change. I mean in all modern Western conduct, there are no obligations in treaties and compromises, there are only gains and privileges. The rules-based international order is just the latest example, but in colonialism and slavery, the idea is the same.
In Serbia and in China, you can lose your privilege to rule the people. And people will show you their position. COVID lockdowns lasted two weekends in Serbia, then the MOB gathered in front of the parliament, and almost trashed the building, and there were no more lockdowns and vaccines were not mandatory. You can see this in all cultures. Some accept the rules even when they are unjust and some can't accept injustice and will give you a piece of mind. There are obligations attached to privilege.@@Dazzlefisher

The divinity of kings in contrast explains that the king is appointed by God (an archaic agreement between the church and the ruling gang of a country to give the gang more legitimacy than they actually have) and anyone who rebels against this order is a demonic agent of the devil. This is in stark contrast to the mandate of heaven where rebellion is not just beneficial but a moral duty of the Chinese citizen. This is why China's civil wars are extreme and why out of the top 10 wars of the highest civilian casualties in the world, historical Chinese civil wars account for like 8 of them along with the first two world wars. What the original commentator failed to mention is that Serbia's apparent similarity to this system is not because Serbia naturally or organically came across it. Medieval Serbia had the divinity of kings right throughout all of it's history (even despite the influence of the Byzantines who greatly influenced Serbian culture and civilization but apparently not it's succession laws) just like most other European Kingdoms did at the time. Serbia also doesn't really have a republican history. Venice, Novgorod, Genoa and Lubeck as medieval republics all were closer to the idea of the mandate of heaven than Serbia ever was. The reason why it appears so now is because all of the Serbian nobility essentially ceased to exist after approximately 400 years of Muslim Ottoman rule. So when Serbia had it's revolution in the 19th century the only leaders they could possibly pick were from the peasantry. Basically what I'm saying is that Serbia was forced to start over while everyone else already had established power structures.

Serbia is unsurprising but Serbia represents a unique case. It is Russia's best ally in Europe, more so than the current Orban regime in Hungary. At the same time, the bombing of 1999 enabled the warming of Russo-Chinese relations since they both see the West with deep resentment. In many way, Serbia helped healing Russia-China relations and become synonymous to the strengthening of this tie. That's why most of Europe do not trust Serbia.

Dude that is what USA and EU are trying to do. China has trade relations with Serbia and Hungary but that doesn't mean that other powers don't have any influence in Serbia and Hungary or that Serbia and Hungary are dependent on just China. For example Serbia trades with EU as well and imports gas from Russia and Hungary is member of EU and NATO witch means it is aligned with USA and imports gas from Russia. In other words neither Serbia nor Hungary are dependent on any one power but are building relations with multiple and no one has any problem with that except USA and EU.

Last week in Budapest the government, the police and many chinese people who were here vacationing did some questionable things.
Firstly on a hill next to the Danube river looking out at the center of the city, protesters put up a Tibet flag. Chinese people with red caps(this is a reoccuring theme) than covered the tibetan flag with 2 Chinese flags on either side, a little altercation broke out between them and when the literal police got there, they demanded that the Flag of Tibet must come down and they let the chinese stay up ofc.
Second funny situation happened a few hours after the previous one. The vice president(im not sure of the correct term) of an opposition party(Momentum) was walking around near that same hill when he was stopped by red caps. They questioned him about the flag he was carrying, asking whether it is a tibetan or maybe a taiwanese flag. It was an EU flag. When he asked who the chinese guys worked for, they answered "the ambassy'.
A third situation on the same day, just at a different part of the city goes like this. A guy wanted to join the paraders on a side of an avenue. He was denied entry by cops to the area, with the reason "you need to be wearing a red hat to enter". There were many inside the area without red caps. So it is questionable at best what happened there.
Im all for embracing your national flag and being pride of your home country. But dawg when 10meter wide chinese flags are being waved in my city at one of the busiest squares(Keleti). I get a little mad.
In Hungary if you don't support the autocratic feudalism that's Fidesz, you don't have the same rights as the ones who do(which is 1/5 of the pop. at max). As it turns out you don't even have the same rights as tourists.
    Please pray for us.
    Peace

You go and vote at the next elections. That is it. But what I do not like is your whinning. If there would be a scandal would that be good for you? If Tibet supporters and Chinese fight on Budapest streets and these news would go around the world would that be something you want? It is the police's job to maintain order and yes that comes with controls. It is not the police's job to decide on political matters, who is right, who is not. The organized, permitted event has a priority and those who want to disturb it shall be controlled. it does not matter which side is which.

The Tibetan supporters have no point.Go to any city or even villiage in Tibet, you would found out that people have appreciated mao.Look at those made-by-human-skin artifacts before 1940s,No wonder those once privileged serf owners feared those serfs seek revenge and run away. The serfs are liberated means that they are treated as human again in tibet’s whole history.
You have to investigate about Tibet’s real situation before sharing sympathy with those Tibetan supporters.

The global west has to close itself off from the authoritarian states, arrest its criminal politicians, judiciary and academia and regain control of the seas. Those countries that want to devolve can do so but should not expect help from the global west. Those countries like Ukraine and Israel that are actively working to develop or continue democracy should be helped by the global west.

You’re way over playing the influence China has in Europe. If anything, Chinas influence has waned in recent years. You’re pointing to an irrelevant and small country in Europe that is the black sheep of Europe, influence in Serbia doesn’t mean much as they’ll never even be a part of the EU.

Well, this video is about Xi's visit, which is why it is focused on Serbia & Hungary. But to your point: There is definitely much more scepticism and hesitancy towards China compared to a few years ago; however China's influence in Europe is still very significant and growing. Germany, for example, is opposed to introducing tariffs against Chinese goods due to their dependence on the Chinese markets, which makes finding a common EU policy difficult. Not to speak of its growing importance in regard to the Ukraine war. And I wouldn't underestimate the impact of the developments we see in Serbia & Hungary. But I'll make more videos related to this in the future.

Nobody will turn down Chinese money, but after all it's an authoritarian regime. The EU is built on freedom and democracy both not available in China. I preferred the US as a hegemon than a polarity of authoritarian regimes and dictators.

I think you're underestimating the importance of MONEY to what is fundamentally a neo-liberal project. China is far away, unlike Russia. I guarantee you most EU leaders will not view China as the threat that the US - a country with Pacific territories, interests, and alliances - does. When economic growth is on the line, I think money is a good lever of power.
