Description: Hans Island ("Hans Ø" in Danish) is an arctic Island located between Canada’s Nunavut territory and Greenland, which is under Danish sovereignty. For 50 years, the Island was disputed between Canada and Denmark, and for decades the Island was known best for the ‘Whiskey War’, one of the friendliest geopolitical “conflicts” ever. But in June 2022, something remarkable happened: Both sides agreed to finally resolve the territorial dispute once and for all by splitting it in approximately half through a new border treaty.
The timing of this Canadian-Danish agreement was no coincidence: Only months prior, Russia had started its’ infamous invasion of Ukraine. As a symbolic response to the war in Ukraine, Canada and Denmark decided it was time to send a signal to the world and particularly Russia by resolving a territorial dispute peacefully and in accordance with international law. But what exactly is Hans Island? Is it worth anything? Why wasn’t it resolved earlier? And did this symbolic gesture really have the effect the Canadians and Danes hoped for? We’ll explore exactly that in this video!

Furries are overhated.
If the starting date really is 1984, then that means this "war" went on for 38 years.
If it started in 1973 that makes it 49 years.
@@concept5631 The Whiskey War started in 1984, the dispute over Hans Island sometime in the early 1970s, probably 1972 or 1973. It's not exactly clear from the sources I found. But either way, basically 50 years.

As a Canadian, I was saddened when our war with a great little story behind it is over on the one hand, but on the other hand I think its really cool that Canada now technically shares a land border with more than just the United States, and a European power no less. As a Canadian, I am thoroughly disappointed that ownership the island is not determined through drinking contest.
An annual drinking contest between Canada and Greenland held say in the start of July. The winner taking complete ownership of the island the end of July and turn it over to the new winner the following July. Perhaps it could be five drinking contests, each a different sort of drinking contest.

Little known is that just previously to the flare-up in the "Whiskey War", Denmark had been offended by the appointment of an unqualified political hack as Canadian ambassador to Denmark. Canada has a highly respected diplomatic corps. Usually they are well educated scholars familiar with the history and culture of the countries they are sent to, and have hard-nosed diplomatic experience in world conflicts. Normally, Denmark, as an important ally, was sent a highly qualified and experienced Canadian ambassador. For example, a previous ambassador to Denmark had learned to speak Danish fluently and was married a Dane. But in 2002, the Canadian government appointed Alfonso Gagliano, a political liability with barely concealed mob connections and a record of political corruption, as ambassador to Denmark. Danes were rightfully offended. Ironically, it was Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham, the man whose visit to Hans Island in 2005 was so significant in the conflict, who forced Gagliano to be removed from his ambassadorship in 2004. The current Canadian ambassador to Denmark, Emi Furuya, and the current Danish Ambassador to Canada, Hanne Fugl Eskjær both appear to be competent and well qualified.
Don’t say BS he’s no mob but a corrupted politician like all of em the only difference he was kinda caught
Cool
Hehe as a kid, I remembered watching TV and seeing a news report about Gagliano being sent to a remote land after the political scandal in Canada. Back in 2016, I went to the Canadian embassy in Denmark to renew my passport. Then I realized that the building where Gagliano were standing in front of in that news report, was the same building here in Copenhagen. 🤣
@@matstrungdang4597 The hilarious part of the story is that the Canadian government, anxious to get rid of a nuisance, tried to appoint him as ambassador to the Holy See [like, Gagliano spoke Italian, right?], a job that would look real prestigious but be diplomatically insignificant. The Vatican took one look at Gagliano's file and told Ottawa "no way." Oops!! At that moment, an opening appeared in Denmark, so PM Jean Chrétien stuffed him there. Chrétien's administration was notorious for paying off local politicians who had delivered tricky ridings for him. Paul Martin, who succeeded him as leader, was a strict by-the-book player, and he did his best to clean up any corruption in the party, getting rid of the bad eggs, and in general ran a clean administration. Getting Gagliano out of Copenhagen was probably first item on his "to do" list. However, the damage had been done to Canada's reputation in Scandinavia [Don't think the Norwegians and Swedes weren't paying attention].
The whiskey war was ~50 years long
It was interesting to read it in the papers here in Canada. A new border with another nation, and a European one no less is a nice change for a country that takes forever to decide on doing the most minor of things. However, all I could think about at the time was the prospect that maybe a land border with a European nation may lead to us getting into Eurovision.
Canada, 12 points!
I think that would be stretching our luck. and besides the Europeans would probably be less enthusiastic about having a bunch of maple men joining in. though I'm all in if they let us
Hasn't Canada been in Eurovision before, I swear I remember seeing them in the competition once...

I was actually aware of "The Whiskey War" before, but this was a very good explanation of it. I especially liked how they incorporated the sponsor into the story, that was clever, I usually tune out when it's the same old same old sponsors like Nord and Raid, but that was entertaining.
By the way, from what I understand, there is an even more obscure border 'dispute' involving another island, I heard long ago about an island between Canada and the US that neither wants, and the mapmakers routinely draw a line on the opposite side so as to give it away, not claim it. Can't remember the name of it, and it's quite small, just a little island with a lot of trees in the middle of a river, I would presume the St Lawrence but I could be wrong. Been many years since I heard the story.
It's also worth noting that the Hand Island split means both nations now have exactly two land borders, where they used to only have 1. Denmark with Germany and Canada with USA.
Worth nothing is that Greenland, an (autonomous country) of the Danish Realm now shares a border with Canada.
@@andriandrason1318 autonomous STATE Greenland is not a country

Hans Island is important with regards to rights in the underlying continental shelf.
Every North Pole nation is scrambling to secure exclusive economic zones for fishery and resources exploitation in the future. In the 1950s Denmark signed away rights to the vast Norwegian oil fields, which is why they're so careful today about relinquishing any future prospects.
Hm, that's a great take actually!
No, the underlying continental shelf was undisputed and unrelated to the island dispute.
@@adamnevraumont4027 it's still relevant with regards to exclusive economic zones and fishery, which was one of the criteria. I apologize if I phrased them like they were all the same.
Personally as a Dane, I couldn't give a shit about Hans Island, but I'm glad a solution was found.
@@Emanon... No, it isn't. There was a treaty where the water border was. Has island going to Greenland or Canada would have no impact whatsoever on EEC or Fisheries. The water rights where completely settled.
You are simply wrong. The only thing in dispute was the 'dry' land on Hans Island itself, due to an oversight in the treaty that handled the strait.
To quote the treaty:
"The Government of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Government of Canada, having decided to establish in the area between Greenland and the Canadian Arctic Islands a dividing line beyond which neither Party exercising its rights under the Convention on the Continental Shelf of April/29/1958 will extend its sovereign rights for the purpose of exploration and exploitation of the natural resources of the continental shelf"
It is very clear. And people who are far more experts on it than I who I have spoken to agree with this reading, so I seriously doubt I'm misreading it.
Please stop making stuff up and disagreeing with people over incorrect beliefs.
Or, if you prefer, don't: keep on having incorrect beliefs and repeating them at other people if that is what you enjoy. Good day!
I wouldn’t count on US getting Greenland. That’s going to remain Danish for our entire lives.
Technically speaking, Canada also had a land border with the Netherlands! During WWII, Princess Juliana of the Netherlands was evacuated to Canada. While in Canada, she became pregnant. If her daughter was born in Canada, she would become a Canadian citizen. To resolve this, Britain’s King George VI declared any place in Canada occupied by Princess Juliana during childbirth would be declared an extraterritorial Dutch territory. Four rooms in a Canadian hospital were prepared with a Dutch flag, and for a short period of time, those four rooms on the third floor of a hospital were officially Dutch territory.

Yeah the 50 years was largely due to how chill the dispute was. It was such a low priority for both countries that it was never really worked on. Countries with hot border disputes should be all the more motivated to work hard on finding a solution as quickly as possible.
It was really just a friendly rivalry. Each country without fail properly folded and stored each other's flag with the expectation that it would be replaced by the next visit, along with exchanging the booze.

The real lecture is not that we could draw a line. But that we could have a friendly dispute for so many years. A dispute that arguably made candada our scandinavian cousin.
Likewise here in Canada. Sometimes disagreeing with respect is as important as agreeing.
As a Canadian I love this. I would 100% share a whiskey with a Dane anytime :)
Set up a memorial day to commemorate the peaceful end to a bloodless war. Both sides bring flags and whiskey, let's see how many drunk blokes can fit on that island
@@sjonnieplayfull5859 I'm 100% down for that
@@hrodvitnir7524 ^Remember that Canada and Greenland are Inuit land that is stolen and occupied by white settlers.
@@purpleblastoise That's a fair point. Then we shall include the Inuit from Greenland and Canada as well!!
@@hrodvitnir7524 yeah sure
your countryball artstyle is one of the best I've seen, keep it up
I'm half Canadian and half Danish, and this gives me the warm fuzzies.
Awesome video, I love your work!!!
What a charming, yet interesting topic. Well done
Speaking about border disputes being solved peacefully.
Norway and Russia actually solved a sea border dispute a few years ago peacefully.
Norways position was basically the same as between Canada and Denmark, equal distance between closest point of land.
Russia didn't agree.
The solution was a compromise halfway between each position.
Yeah, we've had that dispute for a few decades too.
And I think there's still a bit further north that we still disagree on...
Actually due to the recent war, this dispute has risen again…
You bastard, you won my subscibtion with your AD. The Canadians in sombreros got me.
much love from canada, i hope they continue the tradition even though its solved, denmark and canada are friends, not enemies!
That was the best ad I've ever seen in a video! It was absolutely hilarious and it wasn't boring at all. If I didn't already have NordVPN, I definitely would've thought twice about buying it.
Yeah, I loved the "Mexican" Canadians!
I like this style I am definitely subscribing
best sponsorship segue I have seen on youtube. well done!
Excellent closing summary!
The Whiskey War is the one conflict that I am saddened has come to an end.
You misspelled "Whiskey" by forgetting the "H". But I know there's another way to spell it to
I should really have someone check my horrible spelling :' )
@@PoliticswithPaint don't worry, we all make mistakes. Btw I think k in the Scotland or the UK the spell it the way you wrote it. It just like how here in Canada we add a u in several words like colour, humour, and neighbour. Versus the US that doesn't have the U in there spelling
@@Hamsteak have you added a 'u' to sorry yet?
So he did not misspell
I love this video format :)
My first video of yours. Liked and subscribed. Clever!
Да уж,не знал что этот спор оказывается уже решён.Приятно слышать)
This video would have gotten a like anyway but what made me give it a like was the ad, well done!
That was the smoothest ad break I’ve ever seen
been following the border dispute for years... was so happy when they finally settled it, though i loved the cheeky exchange of flags and liquor...
In respect for history let us build a pub on the island 🏝 with both national flags respectfully. And host an annual feast and drinking 🍸 contest. Winner gets free choice if beverage in spirit if friendship. 😋
I kind of liked the whiskey war, It was entertaining. It needed to be resolved I suppose but I will kind of miss it. I liked how people pointed out that this is how nice countries fight.
The only casualties are livers.
Sam, organise a rememberance day of the solution. Make it an annual flag and whiskey event
Great video!! Very entertaining and educational :) And as you have said, I'm one of many that had no clue this island even existed. hehe
How do you not have more subscribers with content like this video. Keep up the excellent content!
Starts off with “Border disputes are like furries”
Goddamn I know this is gonna be a good video
IKR!
Apparently border disputes are comparable to people with a fascination towards the art style of anthropomorphic animals. Who knew? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Great. Think also about the Merkat Island Finland/Sweden, 150 years to place a zig-zag border on a similar frozen uninhabited rock in the Baltic.
There's a place where the border between Sweden and Finland runs right thru a golf course.
Not only very interesting, but an amazing Segueway to the sponsor. :-) Reminds me of old time radio when the hosts would also do the commercials.
I love how the travel agency in the ad had the ubiquitous potted ficus in the corner.
I have no idea how large 200 football fields are please use square kilometers or hektars.
A football field is 100 yards long and some 40 yards wide, or like 90 meters and 33 meters
Great video! It's unfortunate that it took one of the most aggressive countries in the world starting a war to get two of the most peaceful countries to settle a "minor" issue with a line drawn down a rock. Keeping a disagreement going for half a century with sarcasm, whisky, and the occasional float by is still a better way to handle a dispute than war. Both sides in this situation remained friendly, even while disagreeing. Show me two other countries that remained friends while peacefully negotiating a border issue. None come to mind.
'One of the most aggressive countries in the world '?
😅😂🤣loved the sponsor clip 🥳🇨🇦you made.
"Border Disputes are alot like Furries"
Never in my life did I expect myself to hear someone articulate that sentence

Canada and Denmark are already on the same side. The island itself is pretty irrelevant. And finally the dispute itself is petty. Not sure how this would motivate Russia or Ukraine to think about losing advantage in the current war.
I also think Ukraine would be completely against anything that wasn’t a full restoration of their original borders. Kinda don’t blame them cause it will just set a bad precedent for Russia to take more in the future.
I think it was more about demonstrating unity within NATO than "showing how disputes are resolved."
great opening line lmao
LIterally the only NordVPN ad I've ever not fast forwarded through. Good job.
This got you a new subscriber
In regards to Canada and Denmark/Greenland taking so long to settle it, there was literally no reason to accelerate things until the Russian invasion. Up until that point it was relatively harmless and even a kind of funny joke(at least here in Canada), then both sides saw a chance to showcase what diplomacy can be in regards to international disputes
The Inuit peoples hasn't been "in Greenland for millennia". They migrated from western Canada and arrived in Greenland around 1300 CE. That is 300 AFTER the europeans arrived in Greenland.
Various grouops have inhabitated the place since the end of the ice age. The current inuits were already there, when the vikings settled there.
@@SimonRaahauge1973 No. There were natives before yes, but they have died out or left long before the Vikings or Inuits ever came there
I actually watched the Nord VPN ad because of the way you did it. I enjoyed the entire video!
Best commercial I've ever seen in a sponsored youtube video :D
