Gary, I have turned several pieces from wood that a friend gave me. A friend of his brings him a few pieces when he goes to New York to visit family. I turned my first Urn from black locust for my daughter-in-law when her brother past. It makes a nice turning, as your piece shows.

Very nice bowl. Rounding over the edge of the recess is so simple and really dresses up the bottom. Well done.

And I have done plenty like that. This is even easier than turning a disk to fill the recess. And I think it looks better.
I like the now messing with the cole jaws for a simple task.

@@ThePapa1947 Pretty cold here to brrr 23 degrees at the moment 🥶 still in the morning here probably warm up a little bit I got a good fire going in the garage blowing the heat in here on cold days like this and for turning to warm up ya just can’t hardly stand it out there unless ya got a way to warm up 😵💫😄
maybe it will warm up for ya soon, or at least if it is gonna be cold we will get some snow I just love the snow, haven’t seen a good one in awhile.

I live in the finger lakes in western NY state, and there is so much black locust it has become my favorite wood to heat my woodshop, but maybe 1 third of my turnings is locust , thanks for your show, Bryan McCabe, A.K.A. Woodbutcher
Thank you Bryan. I understand in Eastern Oregon they use it for fence post. Very strong and does not rot as fast as some wood.
Also it does get used a lot for firewood.
I have been told Honey Locust is harder but have not turned any.

Lovely little bowl. Thanks for the little tip there. I hate using my Cole jaws. Takes longer to put it together and use it than just flipping it around.
Thanks you very much. I have Cole jaws on a dedicated chuck but you still have to move all the grippers most of the time. For something like this I find it easier to do what I did.

The grain structure reminds me of Ash for some reason. Ash with more color or structure ... could be just me. Nice turning this morning along with an extra technique not often explained..... TM

The wood monger near by has black locust boards with worm holes thru out. Makes nice charcuterie boards with epoxy fill.

I rally enjoyed this video Gary! I use recesses a lot and have done different things to deal with them. But I have been seriously considering putting together a vacuum system. I do know some of the drawbacks but I believe I can deal with most of them. Beautiful bowl!
Thank you David. I have thought about a vacuum system. It would be just one more thing I would need to store. Maybe if I got rid of a few things I would have room. I am working on that but it is hard part with things. Such as I have two bandsaws and I keep one setup with a narrow blade. I actually had 3 up until a couple of days ago. It was a horizontal metal cutting saw. Glad it is gone because it gave me room to put something there that was going to be in the way,

Nice round bowl, Gary! I just recently ran across the piece of Black Locust you brought me. I think it was wet so I set it aside to dry. It's been a few years, probably good to go. It's a full round so I will likely cut it in half to get two bowls. Anyway, great job on yours today! The grain and color in that wood is outstanding and your finish only contributes to that. Good job on the recess removal, too! I have a video on that and used to be adamant about doing that. Then I got old and lazy! LOL! Great job, buddy, keep'em coming! 😊

Another good job, Gary. I use Cole jaws to remove glue blocks. Just don’t tighten them up too much because you get nice indentations around the top and end up with no way to remove them. Guess how I know? 🌞
Thank you Ray. I do use the Cole jaws a lot on my segmented pieces and on some like this one that can sit flat.
This method would be good for a live edge bowl or you just did not want to set the cole jaws up. I do have a dedicated chuck for my cole jaws .

I have only turned one piece of Black Locust and the colours were amazing, even purple in places.
I quite often use that trick on the bottom of bowls but do use my cole jaws.

I like how grain glows as your rotate it . It sands and takes a finish nicely as well.
I have cole jaws and sometimes it is easier to do this than to setup the cole jaws. But you do have better access using the cole jaws.

Happy Thanksgiving Gary . One just has to love Black Locust . The grain is just spectacular . A very nice piece . I have a few pieces left from the Almeda Fire of 2020 . One thing I am not happy about is how hard it is / gets . Happy Turning and Turn it , don't burn it .

I did an end grain droop bowl when I first got this wood back in 2019. That was hard then and now it is like a rock. Although this shape cut pretty nice.
I guess you know they make fence post out of it in Eastern Oregon. They last forever.

Great video, Gary. That is a fine-looking bowl. Not going live-edge was the right choice for this bowl.
I have done similar with the bottom with my cole jaws. I think the reason some people have a problem leaving marks with their jaws is from using the wrong rubber pegs as well as only using 4 of them instead of all 8. I have used the mortice as a place to leave a maker's mark.
Thank you Qapla. I think the mortice works good for signing your name and wood type. I still do that with a tenon by cutting the tenon a little low and then when I remove it I have a slight recess below the bottom.
My main thing here is to get rid of the dovetail for the jaws. And not needing to put the cole jaws in.

I had never seen that method either but it is pretty much how we remove a tenon and the nub so I figure why not give it a try.

Great piece!
Just turned a bowl out of black locust. Super hard! But with sharp tools and some focus, it turned out to be one of my most favorite pieces. The way in which the light transitions across the grain to turn it from yellow to brown is super cool. Havent really seen that with the other woods ive turned

Beautiful bowl, Gary. That is the most interesting wood. I've been trying to emulate Richard Raffan & Tomislav in the way the lovely foot is the chucking point. It's pretty satisfying to use just that much more of the wood in the final piece.
But, I have a far weightier matter. IIRC, Black Locust fluoresces. My question is if a UV inhibiting finish would weaken the wood's fluorescing ability? I better get my hands on some and find out.

Very lovely Gary. Other than a few videos, I’ve never seen Black Locust let alone turn it. It sure has a great overstated grain pattern!! Your bowl has a nice shape. I’ve been working on bowl shapes and foot sizes myself, and have found a few nice surprises. I still have about 500 pounds of English walnut to process before winter sets in good and proper, so I won’t be at the lathe much for a little while 😊 Cheers, Rick

Hi Garth, the grain structure of Black Locust kind of goes all over the place so it does sort of act like endgrain.
Which I think leads to it being very hard.
Well worth though in my opion.

I wonder how that little bit of finish will hold up it looks good but will it hold up over time
It will need a little touch up with mineral oil or the the Acks polish/restoring paste.
This bowl will most likely be used for snacks and a lot of people worry about them being food safe.

Some novice questions: Is there a reason you chose to turn the the corners off, rather than trim them off with a bandsaw? I know you used shellac-based sanding sealer here. I think I remember you using water-based sealers in other videos. What influences your choice of shellac vs. water? This bowl is beautiful. That grain is just extraordinary!
I was not 100% sure I was going to make it round. So that left an option. Also it turns off about as fast as changing the blade on the bandsaw. I had a fairly wide blade which does not cut a smaller radius all that well.
I use both of those sealers and a lot depends on the grain and the color of the wood. Shellac based with add a slight tint to the piece and I like that on this.

That is beautiful wood- at least you’re turning skills and made a beautiful bowl. I do have a question. I want you and Mr. Phil and you’re both use that scraper so differently. You seem to kind of go above the center a bit and he stays on Center. Since I’m having such a hard time getting rid of tool marks I think I’m gonna buy one of those negative brake scraper. My question is what is the best way to hold it since I have never used one? I know your directions about the carbides was right on. Advice for negative rate scraper? I wander how to get rid of evidence of a recess - and now I know 😊😊

So the way I grind my scraper it looks like I am above center. But actually I put it right on center both on the outside and the inside. And I hold the tool flat to the world (or the center line of the turning)
We both use the same scraper and it came from Penn State Industries. It comes as a standard scraper and you need to grind the top to make it a negative rake. Far less money and works just fine.

@@ThePapa1947 thank you very much for the info. I have ordered through Penn State for several tools - but now I understand why I have not been able to find it negative rake scraper like you 2 use. What degree of bevel is it ground to each side- the same amount I would think but what is it?
I grind mine at 40 degrees on both sides. Anything less than 45 is what you want. You just want the included angle less than 90.

Curious why a recess and not a tenon that becomes a foot?
The foot size will be determined by the size of the jaws you use. And you would still want to blend the sides into the foot.
But I suppose it is just a personal preference.

A nice piece as it is. I am curious if turned the other way around wouldn’t the crotch figures be retained more. Was size the concern?
Thank you and good question.. Yes in most cases that crotch figure has a better chance of being at the bottom of the bowl. But you do loose size when cutting that direction if you want the turning to be round which I did.
Always a toss up. I recently did a turning where I did just what you are asking so I could keep the crotch figure I saw. Thanks for watching,

We have a lot of black locust trees here... I'm sure you've said before but I was wondering what lathe do you have? I'm looking for one with more horsepower... I had one 16" bought through grizzly I was turning a large piece had a couple of catches. Using a coring system. And long story short the spindle shaft bent and wasn't running true.. I sent it back they just wanted to replace it.. NOPE... So I'm looking for a better lathe that uses real steel... And not something that bends so easy...

I have the Laguna Revo 1836. I do have the one that uses 240 volts which has more horse power than the 120 model.
But I know people with the 120 model and it does fine. But he does not have a coring setup.
The 120 and 240 are the same price now so I would go for the 240.
