Love it when a turner says this is one of my best pieces. It reveals so much about the turner and what he/she values. You speak eloquently for that which nature has supplied.
Thank you very much. Ray. For sure this is one of my pieces with the best grain I have come across. I just always hope it is still there when I am done turning it. But looking a the bottom I could see I would not turn past it. That is when I know I can pretty much give it the shape I want.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I never grow tired of seeing chatoyance. Amazing every time! 😁😁😁
Thank you Kate, I feel the same and just finished a piece of Black Locust that when you rotate the piece it looks like someone turned a light switch on. Coming in a few weeks.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I have been a fan of yours for some time. I am a wood turner also. I started when my wife died. It gave me something to keep my mind from the sadness of loss. I admire your talents. I sell my bowls at a ceramic store and it pays for my hobby. I keep watching to see what you come up with all the time. Keep on keeping on and get a warm place to work or cool which ever is needed.
Thank you Paul.
Sorry for your loss.
Wood turning can help taking your off things at least for awhile.
I have used this and other things to keep my mind from dwelling on things.
Have fun turning.
Gary
I love black walnut !! You explain things as you go which is very helpful for me. At 73, I am considering a lathe to continue my love of woodworking. You are a very good teacher !! Thank you !!
Thank you very much Don. I appreciate your comments and am really happy you like my channel.
All I can say if you love wood turning like I do then you need a lathe.
I am 76 and my first turning was in a grade school shop class. I turned a lot at work as a wood patternmaker. I still have not got tired of it.
I am sure you will love it.
Let me know what you decide.
Take care,
Gary
It is, indeed, a lovely piece of black walnut. Your craftsnanship has allowed that beauty to be seen. Thank you!
I also see thd face.
Thanks so much Stephanie I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching,
Gary
I absolutely love your channel, I am retired and started turning about 8 years ago, you are an inspiration for some of the projects I've done, I've learned and keep learning things from your channel, keep posting I'll watch every one of them.
Thank you Larry I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I would like to see your shop if that's possible, where are you located. Thanks
As always, a beautiful project.
I had a friend as a child, an older man who lived nearby. He used to sit in his chair at night & eat popcorn. He liked to find shapes, especially faces, hidden in the pieces. He was a sweet, very active gentleman. We were 6 children with a single mother in a depressed area & he was good to us. He and his wife were very generous and hard working. In some ways, you remind me of him.
Thank you for your story Amy. Sounds like a very nice man he was.
I grew up in a family of 8 and our dad died when I was 6 so my mother raised us herself.
What state were you living in when you were a child.
Take care,
Gary
Good evening, Gary.
Your made the perfect turning from his piece of wood. Gorgeous. I love the aroma of Walnut as it is turned.
Thanks Ray. It is a beauty of a piece of wood and sure fun to turn.
Not many types of wood that I can smell any more. But I just turned some Juniper that really let me know it was there.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
YES, YES I do love it. Wish the AI didn’t object to my first statement, something about questionable wood and a loss of time. Seems the AI doesn’t understand humor between friends.
Beautiful wood and some great turning to give the opportunity it needed to shine. This blank begged to be natural edge. Thanks for listening. That crotch figure is marvelous. Thanks as well for the mention.
Thank you very much Doug and I knew you would. For sure it was saying natural edge the minute I picked it up.
With the nice bark you get much more heart wood and then you get that flame. It showed up on the chain saw cut and I was very excited to see.
So Ai filtered something you said? Now you have me wondering what it was. What did they do take it down? Email me a copy it sounds like it was very funny.
Take care,
Gary
Hi Gary, Great job in bringing out the beauty and hidden features of the pieces you turn. I enjoy the different projects you take on. Keep them coming!
Thank you Michael. I enjoy doing lots of different things and happy you enjoy them as well.
Take care,
Gary

That is one beautiful black walnut bowl! Glad to see you're on a walnut kick!
Thank you Tom. For sure this has been some beautiful wood to turn. Might have to get off the kick so I have some for later LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nature never fails to impress! At least, not when her creation ends up in a masters hands. You are a master!
Thank you so much Kristi. I did my small part but the master was who created all this beauty. It is such a pleasure to turn what nature provides.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice. Black walnut is a great species to turn. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Doug it sure is. Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank You Gary....Another GREAT show. I am having major computer problems and I am late. I will see you next Friday. Love that Black Walnut !!!!!.... TM
Thank you TM. I was 1/2 late this morning. When I set this to run I somehow picked the 4th. I think it is a probably we me never even knowing what day of the week it is. Around here everyday is Saturday except Sunday.
Take care,
Gary
Wow, that is so gorgeous! My neighbor just had a huge Black Walnut tree trimmed and gave me about 15 pieces of the wood. I took a crotch piece and cut it round and then in half and it has a gorgeous feather on both pieces. I'm going to turn one of them on Sunday with Sam Angelo and I can't wait!
Thank you Carol. How sounds like you got your self some woodened gold there.
Are you doing a class with Sam? Maybe you can send me a picture of the finished turning.
Have fun,
Gary
Such a beautiful piece Gary black walnut is so beautiful 👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much Radar. Nice to hear from you. Hope all is well.

Hi Gary
Beautiful piece.
Love the way you always find a face, great job.
Thank you Jim. I was not really looking for a face on this one and when I saw it I about jumped out of my shoes LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I dont normally like natural edged bowls but that one is beautiful!
Thank you very much Debra. I like them both but there is something about a nice turned rim to really set some bowls off.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great work Gary...beautiful piece...stay safe...press on 😎 Joe
Thank you very much Joe. I appreciate you watching.

Thanks so much Albert I appreciate you watching and commenting,

The Black Walnut bowl is just beautiful.😊
Thank you very much Regena I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Wow, I wish we grew walnut down in Oz, that grain is absolutely amazing. Plus your turning and finish really added to whole piece.
The inside bottom is really flat which is a testament to your turning ability.
You obviously only use sharp tools as you don’t appear to get much tear out.
Our shed gets some walnut which has been laminated benchtop for kitchens. I like turning this as it turns easily even for hardwood and the colours and variations in grain and depth of colour of walnut is truly great.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much Greg. It seems like your climate would work for Walnut. Maybe nobody had any seeds back then.
I was sure wanting a nice large flat bottom in this one to show off the grain.
Sharp tools are very important to avoid tear out for sure. My grinder is right behind me and when I get close to the finishing cuts I usually touch it up on the 350 CBN wheel.
I have some kiln dried Walnut lumber and it is very nice to turn.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Wow, I see the face! It is an awesome piece!
Thank you very much Virginia. I had not seen the face till I was showing the bowl. It was a real shock and not even Halloween yet LOL. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Another beauty... Love your skills😊
Thank you very much Neebin I appreciate you watching.

Thank you Dianne and thanks for watching.

Amazing end product, I was really worried at the start with that big split. Great job.
Thank you Chris. Looking at how the crack died at at the base I was pretty sure it would be fine. But I watched it carefully and was happy to see it mostly get turned away.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
The finish is excellent its like copper bronze , and a lord of the rings face 😂😂👏👏👏👏
Thank you Vini. I appreciate your watching.
Gary
Another amazing piece. Yes i see the face. Keep up the amazing work. 👽
Thank you and hope to be able to get back to the lathe soon.
Gary
Wow! Again.
Thank you Doug. Much appreciated.
Gary
Another beautiful walnut bowl. Can’t go wrong with a live edge because of the distinctive thick bark. There was no train in Ketchikan last time I was there.
Thanks Valerie. That bark certainly is thick. Certainly makes you slow down when cutting at the edge.
So was the train just not running?
Good story about that train ride. We booked a helicopter ride that landed on a glacier right before the train ride.
We was concerned with getting back to the train and they promised we would get back. They shuttle the two of us back in a van instead of the bus. In the big hurry to get going I left a mini pair of binoculars in the life jacket we had to wear on the chopper. Called them after figuring it out and they said yes we found them. They mailed to our home at no cost.
Beautiful bowl, Gary. I even saw some chatoyance in the bottom while you were turning it.
Bill
Thank you Bill!
Gorgeous piece of walnut!
It is really an amazing piece. The pieces I have turned of this have come off the same limb. And a beauty that limb was.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Looks great of course. Love that walnut. I am thinking that I might have to try your finish type on a project or two. Thanks for the fun. I enjoy every project you do
Thank you Travis. I think it is a great finish. But I have a lot that I like and depending on the piece I am working on.
I am sure you will like this and find it easy to use.
Gary
When turning a live edge, I find running the dust collection helps capture the dirt and dust released while clearing through the bark. It seems to shrink the dust clouds.
I agree with you Michael. I have an overhead air filter and a dust collector. Problem is if I run them while recording it would be very unpleasant.
I will have to make sure I at least turn the overhead air filter on. It is not all that bad.
Thanks,
Gary
Wow Black Walnut really shined through for you very very cool. I happen to have a couple of slabs of Black Walnut about 4 inches thick and 18 inches long to play with tomorrow. Love your videos . Jerry
Thank you Jerry. Sounds like a great piece of Black Walnut you have. Hope you have lots of fun. Let me know how it goes.
Gary
Absolutely beautiful! ❤
Thanks so much Beverly and thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice another fine piece of art.
Thank you kindly David and thanks for watching,
Gary
You pretty much cannot go wrong with Black Walnut Gary. I'm absolutely addicted to turning it, and it's cousin Butternut. Happy turning my friend ☺️.
Thank you Edward. For sure Black Walnut is a pleasure to turn. I have never turned Butternut and pretty sure we do not have any around here. That is a lovely wood as well that I have longed to turn.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 well some day I'm going to have to get around and send you and Phil both a piece of Butternut. I do not know for sure if it grows out west because my national Audubon society book on trees is for the Eastern region of the US. That being said I like to think of it as the blond haired stepchild.
Just beautiful Gary! Walnut never disappoints, but some is spectacular 😊. A couple of days ago I was lucky enough to come by 4 huge rounds of English walnut (unliftable by me) that I’m in the process of preparing for storage. My 16 inch chainsaw can barely get through them. Very much looking forward to turning it. Cheers, Rick
Thank you very much Rick. You will love the English Walnut. Pieces that big can be spectacular.
Have fun
Gary
Simple stunning. Gary you never disappoint
Thank you Chris. I have to say with Black Walnut it makes it pretty easy.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

I love the bowl. As you said, gorgeous grain, so many interesting patterns and colours. Glad the live edge stayed on the wood, looks terrific.
Well done.
Dave.
Thank you Dave. I sure enjoyed turning it and glad the bark stayed on as well. Turning from that direction also leaves a lot more heart wood. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary
What brand lathe are you using?
It is the Laguna 1836
Great piece of wood Gary!
Thank you very much. I appreciate you watching and commenting.

Afternoon Gary
Thanks Huw, it feels like it now. I set this to start at 7 a few weeks ago. Problem was I set it for the 4th LOL
I guess when you are retired you do not pay attention to what day it is.
Later my friend,
Gary
Looks good enough to eat!
Maybe add just a bit of ice-cream to that chocolate and we will be all set.
Thanks for watching Stuart.

A nice piece of art sir, the wood is stunning. Thanks for the post, it was a good video.🌿 👍👍👍
Many thanks Rob I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
A truly stunning piece, Gary. Exotics certainly have their place, but in my book, they don't have a thing on a nice piece of figured Black Walnut. You certainly maximized the potential in this one.
Thanks so much. For sure there are lots of beautiful types of wood around. Not easy to get around here but like you say hard to beat Black Walnut.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
|Gary another beautiful piece there my friend it turned out amazing, such a beautiful wood well done
Many thanks Alan I appreciate you watching.

Thanks so much Jimmy and thanks for watching.
Take care,
Gary
Stunning piece!
Thank you Luie. I appreciate you watching.
Take care,
Gary
Love the grain. And yes I saw the face. Not sure how you get the finish on so perfectly. Only 83 here today. No coat necessary.
Thank you very much Rick Funny how I do not see these faces right away but when holding it up and seeing it in the camera they tend to pop right out. This one gave me chills LOL.
Wow I could use some of that heat. Although at 6:50 am this morning it is 63 degrees. But heavy rain.
Oh the PNW has it all!
The trick with the finish is do not try to cover all at once. Very light coats wiped on. It is one of my favorites to wipe .
I think the wipe on poly is the easiest.
Stay warm!
Gary
Love your work. I live in Portland also. Old wood turner. Retired. Have some unique wood you might be interested in: Persian Ironwood. In the late 1800’s tree starts were brought back to Oregon and planted in Scappoose. Last year one of the trees was taken down. My neighbors picked up a large quantity and, knowing I like to turn wood, provided be with some of the most beautiful wood I have had in many years. I don’t drive anymore, but I would gladly give you a chunk for your collection. Let me know if you would be interested.
Thank you Johnny.
Yes I would be very interested in the wood you have.
Gorgeous bowl Gary! Just noticed you're at 50K subscribers, congrats!
Thank you very much Stuart. Who would have thunk! I appreciate all of you who are subscribed.

Yes, walnut never gets old. What a great job you did bringing out the best in that wood, Gary. I look forward to the segmented video, but these always satisfy.
Thank you very much Jay. Not sure when I will get the segmented piece turned. I have to figure out what it is going to be.
A bit different is all I will say.

What a beautiful piece Gary. I wish we had walnut up here in Manitoba, but our local species are pretty limited.
Thank you very much Ron. There is something you have up your way that is very pretty. I think it is Butter Nut. At least I use to watch someone who turned a lot of it.

I really like this live edge bowl. As you said that piece is exceptionally beautiful. The face couldn’t have been drawn better by hand. Keep on turning my friend.

I have to agree, this is one very, very nice piece of work. You done good to a really good piece of wood. Thank you for sharing. Remember, when the wood goes around, the face shield goes down.🙂🙂
Thank you Glen. For sure it is a very nice piece of wood. Yup my face shield goes down unless I am buffing out the finish.

Such a beautiful piece!
Thank you very much Maria! Sometimes I miss faces and others point them out. This one jumped right out at me.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Walnut is beautiful wood and you definitely brought out the best in this piece. Lovely grain and finish with my favorite live edge!
Thanks Susanne. Glad to hear you like the live edge bowls. Some do not but for me turning that way not only adds some contrast with the bark but there is a good chance you will end up with much prettier grain. You normally leave more heart wood and a nice contrast of sap wood.
Take care,
Gary
A Master class in bowl turning. I learn so much from your video, which are so well done, of course beautiful work, no nonsense straight to the point and you do what help me the most is when you stop and show the progress, give lathe rpm's and other helpful tips on turning. thanks
Thank you very much Ronald. i appreciate your comments and am truly happy you enjoy my videos.
Over time the RPM will become second nature to you but I think it helps to know what it is in the begining.
