I Found a Frog In A Log 36 Minute Wood Turning
Vložit

- This was a very green and wet Magnolia log. A rather soft wood with some interesting grain, But wait till you see what I found on the inside.
The turning part took less than 36 minutes so if you have not tried turning fresh green wood you are in for a treat.

Absolutely beautiful! My grandparents had a very large magnolia tree in there front yard. It was the most beautiful tree I have ever seen. This one made me tear up just from memories of them ❤️
Thank you Madonna and I am sure they are wonderful memories.
Take care,
Gary
Ya, the frog is there. The gain is beautiful and again another great turning. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Kent! I bet with this grain there will be lots of things to see in all the pieces that get turned.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Fantastic bowl, Gary. Most interesting grain. My daughter was fond of it, one of her favourite heros is named Princess Magnolia. And the frog was the icing on the cake.
Thank you Jay, and happy your daughter liked it as well. I will see if any of my grandkids see it...without telling them of course LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gidday Gary, another one I found going back through the archives. Once you see the frog you can't un see it. Great result Cheers Deno
Thank you Deno and that frog is still in there. Looks like he has the rights to it now LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful bowl Gary, you are a brave man to bring that bowl down 7/32. But it paid off, love the grain & the frog.
Thank you Mark. Well the piece was cutting like butter and did not do any moving for a day.
Thanks for watching and I will say hi to the frog for you LOL.
Take care,
Gary
🐼 Big Bear Hugs from a 68 yr old grandma in Kirby, Texas, USA 🐼 ❤ 🎀 ❤ 🎀 ❤ 🎀
Thank you Grammy Bear!
Beautiful grain in this bowl. And yes, I see a very handsome frog 🐸
Thank you very much Denise! And thanks for watching.
Take care,
Gary
I can’t unsee that frog either. Nice bowl Gary 🌞
Thank you Ray, It was a fun thing to discover as I was turning the bowl.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Sèeing your magnolia bowl turning just now is timely for me, as I recently acquired a number of magnolia blanks from a tree my son & I trimmed at his house. The same house I grew up in. It was one of my mother's favorite yard trees, so there are sentimental memories attached to the blanks.
Thanks for showing me how to deal with turning magnolia wood. Now I'm eager to turn it and gift it to my son & wife. Might even try to make a keepsake turning for our 1-1/2 yr old grandson to memorialize his great grandparents for him.
Thanks,
John Stough
Thank you John and a great story about your mothers favorite tree. You will make a lot of people happy with turnings from it.
Take care,
Gary
I'm like you i like that a lot, keep your eye on your Magnolia tree Mother, yes can also see the frog in the bottom, great markings. Good job. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thank you Gary and thanks for watching.
Gary
Papa 47 you nailed phills techie, I like when guy's give me lesson on woodturing as I am learning. Great looking bowl, good looking grain.Ernie smith from brisbane Australia
Thank you Ernie! Happy you enjoyed the video and I do love Phil's technique.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Pretty bowl Gary, the grain configuration is very unusual, plus you got the bonus "frog". Take care, John
Thank you John. I just wish that frog could catch those bugs that keep flying around.
Take care,
Gary
Amazing grain, and the frog puts on the finishing touch!
Thank you Beatrice. The frog was a real bonus.
Very nice bowl. I see the dancing frog. Thanks
Thank you Anthony, he does look like a happy little dancer for sure.
Take care,
Gary
Magnolia is a beautiful. My uncle made keepsake boxes from the wood Dad milled from a broken limb from our magnolia tree with his chainsaw on our farm in Alabama. The frog is very cute. Great job.
Thank you James. The wood is very interesting and the frog was a real treat.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice turning Gary The frog is cool. Take care Dave
Thank you Dave and thanks for waching.
Gary
Bowl-legged space man! 😎😎 Nicely done.
Thanks for the video.
Thank you Jerry and it does like that as well.
Gary
Hello. My first time watching your work. Much enjoyed it. At some point, a song was playing in my head: "There's a frog on the bump, on the log in the bottom of the hole..."
Thanks so much for dropping by. That is a catchy little song. It will be in my head all day now LOL.
Thanks for watching and hope you liked it enough to be a regular viewer.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful bowl, the grain is amazing and I saw the frog as soon as you got to the bottom of the bowl.
Thank you Jean. I think the frogs like to hide out in the bottom LOL. It is always fun to find things in the grain.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very beautiful Gary and yes I see the face take care and God bless
Thank you Mike. It was really cool when I first noticed the frog. Glad he stuck around.
Take care my friend and God bless!
Gary
Very cool I agree I love the uneven grain. Every tree has a story to tell. This one is bullfrog. You got to love it. Thanks
Thank you Kevin! That is what I like so much about wood grain. We get to see what sometimes takes years to be created.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice work 👏! I see the 🐸. That wood has some really nice grain pattern. Glad it didn't warp bad. Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!
Thanks so much Stephen. It seems to be very stable and has not moved any more. God Bless and take care,
Gary
Thanks. I've learned a lot by just watching and listening to your videos.. I've bought a smaller lathe .. 12 inch swing,. Getting started is kinda expensive, but I've wanted a new hobby for some time and I think this is it 😊
Thank you and a 12 inch lathe is a good sized for lots of things.
Happy you like my videos and hope you have lots of fun using the new lathe.
Gary
HI gary sorry I missed the video that was a beautiful grain bowl.
Thank you Manjit!
Nice work Gary:):)....Saw the frog and I was looking for the siblings...:):)
Take Care
Yiannis
Thank you Yiannis! Probably in there hiding somewhere LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I saw the frog before you mentioned it! Love the grain!
Thanks so much Brenda! You have confirmed I was not seeing things. That can happen after too much coffee LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank you, that turning was very interesting. Best,
Thank you very much and thanks for watcing.
Gary
Gary, I think the "stains" are medullary rays. Pretty!
Thanks Stuart. That makes sense!
Take care,
Gary
Super grain, great bowl. Thanks for sharing
Thank you Ward and thanks for watching.
Gary
definitely a frog, and a bonus smiley face on the bottom!
Thanks so much. Now I have to look for the smiley face.
Take care,
Gary
Wow! That grain contrast is crazy. I see the frog. My wife saw a lady’s chin the other way around. Good job.
Thank you very much. I will have to go look for that chin now.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice frog, Gary! The bowl is real nice too! 😃😃 I was surprised how thin you turned it when there might be movement in the wood. But then that’s why you’re the expert and I’m not! Great video my friend. Keep them coming. 👍👍👍
Take care,
…..Gord
Thank you Gord. Well I had not idea how it would act getting thin but it stayed running true all the way till I was done.
It did warp a bit after I let it dry in front of the fan. But it is only 3/32" out of round right now and that is a week later.
Very interesting and fun wood to turn.
Thanks for watching and by the way. I poured a bag of Smarties in it but figured I would eat them too fast so I put them back in the bag. I have a smaller bowl planned just for that LOL.
Take care my friend,
Gary
I am amazed that you still have some of those smarties left, Gary. Obviously you’re not the glutton that I am! 😂🤣😂🤣
My wife says I can only open one treat at a time. I made the mistake of opening the 20lb bag of M&M's! Advise or help needed LOL.
So pretty! I think magnolia is one of favorites.
Thank you very much. The first I turned and it was a real joy.
Take care,
Gary
Gotta love all the wood shavings. In this case, since it's wet, long curls, not chips.
Yes this piece was a dream to turn because it was green.
Yep, it’s a frog. I’m still amazed at how many won’t even attempt to remove the nub by turning it. I really believe that slowing down for the final removal is the key. I love turning magnolia. You did a beautiful job with this piece. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Doug and it was hard not to see that frog.
I understand not wanting to try the nub removal.
I feel good every time I do it this good. I learned it from the best.
Thanks again for watching.
Take care,
Gary
Frog bowl awsom fantastic grain
Thank you Greg, happy you enjoyed it.
Gary
Beautiful bowl Gary.
Thank you very much Jack!
I like how you explain a few things at the start.
Also, it won't crack as it dries? (you heard?) ok, so that was my next question. Let's go!
Thanks so much. It has not cracked yet. Some wood is like that and the some even when it has been dry for years will crack when you turn it.
The grain in this tells me there is not a lot of strain in it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Really nice bowl Gary, many thanks!
Thank you Paully and thanks for watching.
Gary
That was awesome I've always wanted to turn magnolia it's beautiful lol a bowl full of frog 🐸 stay safe friend 👍👍👍👍
Thank you Radar! Ya gotta watch those darn frogs! They will look for all kinds of places to live LOL
Take care,
Gary
Yep I see the frog. A very pretty bowl.
Thank you Harry. I really like the bow legged from a lot.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thats really awesome i love the grain and yes i can see the frog. I saw it even before you were done with it
Thank you very much Joann. For sure he was not hiding very well.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That grain is beautiful! Nice work, Gary (as always)!
Thanks Scott I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Those first cuts made some nice chips!
Oh yeah!
Haha I can’t stop seeing frog now either! A very interesting bowl. I like it very much. I’ve turned wet cedar with a very similar result with the wide growth rings. Cheers, Rick
Thank you Rick. That frog kind of grows on you and for sure it grew on that log.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Lol, now that you pointed out the frog, that all I can see. Jeremiah was a bullfrog …🎶🎶
He was a good friend of mine! Ok now will have that song stuck in my head all day. But that is ok because I liked it. A great group!
Take care,
Gary
that is an awesome bowl gary looked like that sumac bowl u did i love the grain, u take care of yourself ok? just remember God loves u, God bless. chris
Thanks so much Chris. Yes it does look like the Sumac. I was thinking the same thing.
God bless you as well my friend,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 ive never turned either one how do they both turn? chris
@@chriswalters5936 have you ever heard the term "Cuts like butter" Well they both turn nicely but with the Magnolia being green it really turns nice.
@@ThePapa1947 i need to find me a piece of that and yes i have heard the term now i want a piece just like that one u just turned love it!. chris
Frog, yes. I turned wet magnolia last year. Loved the aroma. Dried in shavings, but it sits waiting for me to decide what to do to it next since it won’t go back on the lathe. Now a design modification opportunity! Just have not yet figured out the best modification to employ.
Thank you Valerie. It sure turns nice when wet.
So why wont yours go back on the lathe?
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 it did some super distorting. Nothing I can enhance with more turning. Have not stared at it long enough yet.
Beautiful Gary
Thanks so much Japie!
I think that's a mama frog, Gary. I see a baby about knee high, too! Very cool grain in that Magnolia! You sure were having fun turning that wet wood and getting those long curls! Lotsa fun to watch, I can tell you that! Great finish, of course. Good job, my friend, keep'em coming! 😊
Phil
Thank you Phil! Had I known that frog had babies I would have chosen a different log to turn. Now I have to look through all those shavings to make sure there are not more. I think frogs are like rabbits and we will be infested by frogs LOL.
Oh yes it was sure fun making all the curly fries. Oh wait...curly fries and frog legs, now I know what is for lunch!
Thanks for watching my friend and take care,
Gary
nice job Gary. yep, there is definitely a frog there! i guess ill be hopin the neighbor saws down his big magnolia tree soon!
You might tell him there has been a frog invasion and it would be best to cut it down LOL.
Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 sounds like a plan! If hes gullible enough to go for it, ill send you some blanks......its a huge tree!
Really nice bowl, Gary. I see the frog! The grain is amazing and that staining just adds to the character. Take care.
Bill
Thank you Bill. Yes I think the staining does look nice. It almost looks purple from one angle.
Take care,
Gary
I like your frog . Thanks for sharing
Thank you Niel and thanks for watching.
Yup I see the frog. Nice work.
Thank you Rick! Last time I looked he was still in there. Must have decided it was his new home LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Absolutely beautiful bowl.
Thanks Donald and thanks for watching.
I like that bowl.. beautiful!
Thank you Eduardo, happy you like it.
Gary
What beautiful wood... I love the "splatter" staining. It adds such interest to the bowl. And I love froggy.. 😊
Thank you Patricia, I agree the staining really does add to the look. I think the frog likes it as well!
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hadn't seen magnolia turned until now. Beautiful grain patterns. Another great project Gary!
Thanks so much. It was really fun because I had not turned it or seen it before this. Thanks for watching.
Gary
Great job👍
Thank you very much! I just peaked in on your channel. Looks very interesting and I will be checking it out.
Gary
Now that you pointed her out, I can't stop seeing the frog, either! This was a fun one. And you have the Phil technique for removing the nub down - I'm still working on that one.
Thank you Michael. Yes once you see him you will not be able to not see him LOL.
This was the perfect piece of wood for Phil's nub removal.
Take care,
Gary
Thanks for sharing the excellent tip about going in 45 deg. angle to not go strait into the end grain.
I’ve not started turning yet but I’ve watched turning videos for about 4 years. Nobody else (whos videos I’ve watched) gave this awesome tip and I didn’t think of that either. Greetings from Sweden. 😎☀️☺️
Glad it was helpful Aranka! It also helps because you are making more contact with the wood as you get it round. Less air to cut. Hope you enjoy woodturning when you decide to give it try.
Take care,
Gary
It looks like you or someone took the time to orientate the blank so the grain would be balanced. (good job). I've turned magnolia before while it was wet and it didn't , crack however, it did warp some. came out very interesting. Beautiful bowl and great job, Thanks
Thank you Randy. I brought the piece home as a round log. I did look at the end for awhile before cutting it in half. I hope the other half is this nice.
Very stable wood with a small amount of warping.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
As a crazy french man, i might be tempted to claim my copyright !!!🤪 many thanks for your bright videos
So sorry Jean I had no idea of the connection between french and frogs. If I find another one in a bowl I will be sure to give you credit LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Lovely! My brother, may he rest in peace, told my midwestern husband it was against the law to cut down a magnolia. It's not. My brother held certain things in extremely high regard.
Thank you Lucy. I meant to ask the people why they cut the tree down. They took it down and a Cherry tree. The Magnolia was huge.
I hate to see trees cut down without a real good reason.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I see the frog Gary and I love the grain in that wood. You did a wonderful job with it. Thanks for sharing 👍 😊
Thanks so much Tim and thanks for watching.
Gary
Yes! I see the frog & he's beautiful! I have never seen a magnolia tree. That is a pretty interesting grain. I love listening to you as you turn, I find it quite soothing.
Thank you very much Amy! I had not seen the inside of a Magnolia before. Plenty the outside. They are very pretty and very messy.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary
Magnolia trees are tall and broad when full grown they have beautiful very large white blossoms. One blossom will fill a while house with a lovely not to sweet fragrance. I think they only grow where the winters are fairly mild.
@@judithfairchild8620 this tree looked like it must have been pretty big based on the pile of logs I saw. I think it probably took up most of their backyard. It was sure nice to turn.
@@ThePapa1947 I'm sure it was.
Great video Gary , not many people can say they turned a wooden frog 👍 😀
Thank you Ian. This worked out pretty good. We miss the frogs we used to hear behind us at night.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Papa,
Definitely a frog 🐸. I too have no idea what the darker staining is, but it is inside and outside, so I believe it is natural to the wood. I did especially enjoy the way the contrast between light and dark popped as soon as you started the first coat of sanding sealer.
Thank you for a most enjoyable afternoon interlude. Keep the aspidistra flying!
God bless,
Paul
Thank you Paul. Very happy to hear you like the simpler ones. I sure enjoyed turning on it.
Take care
Gary
I kept waiting for you to discover the frog! I've turned several pieces of magnolia from my neighbor's tree and it was quite fun. Love it bowl and, especially the frog!
Thank you Carol! I am sure others were waiting for that frog to fly out. But he hung on tight and is still there.
For sure this Magnolia was really fun to turn.
This was one of the smaller pieces to choose from. The others were too big for me to handle.
Thanks for watching
Gary
Great frog ! 🐸
Thank you Dennis!
A frog? Absolutely sir! Nice wood and another inspiring project Gary! 😎
Thank you Leo. The tree was huge and it was uphill out of his back yard. Even with a wheel barrel it was not easy.
But I will check and see if he still has some. I think the plan was to have a lot taken away by the tree service. I will check next week when I bring him this bowl. Darn that means I will be giving away my frog...OH NO!
Take care,
Gary
I can see the frog I could see it while you were turning really cool piece bud
Thank you Jason. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Nice bow, Gary. Down here is East Texas we have many magnolia trees. Many of those trees a couple of months ago were knocked down by tornado and straight line winds. I should have collected some of that wood for turning. But, I was too busy taking care of two large Black Jack oak trees that were blown over. That wood even when green is tough turning. It’s only good for fire wood IMHO.
Keep those wood shaving Flynn’.
Black Jack oak is good for BBQ
@@qapla Ok, for fire wood and BBQ.
Thank you J. This tree was huge and I only took 4 pieces plus some Cherry he had taken down. I will check to see if he has cleared it all out yet. Maybe I could find a friend for that frog LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I had no idea what you meant by a frog in a bowl when you started. But it really is a frog outline!! Why knew?? Anyway, another great piece of art Gary. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏾
Thank you very much Greg. Happy you stuck it out to see the frog show up!
Take care,
Gary
Lovely bowl Gary, very interesting grain and it appears that the staining which looks like the sun is keeping the frog warm! Well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you Al, that is a good thing because I think that frog found itself a home. We used to hear frogs behind us every night. After they developed the area and took the pond out we have not heard them. Bummer!
Another nice piece, very nice work! Did I see two round froggy eyes on the bottom?
Thank you very much. I will check that out now!
Take care,
Gary
Nice work 👍👍
Thank you John!
I love the grain and sometimes a simple turning is a fun thing to do.
Thanks Josh. Well for sure it is nice to do something simple and just let the shavings flow.
Just finished another brain teaser and have line up something simple that I have not down but a common turning to do when starting out. And I have a good reason for doing it.
Take care,
Gary
I totally see the Frog. Jonesy
Thank you for watching Jonsey!
I definitely saw the frog in it 💚 the markings were amazing, and the coloured patches too...loved it 😊❤️
Thanks so much Heather and thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary
Salut Gary jolie pièce et très bonne vidéo bravo 👍👏👋
Salut Denis,
Heureux que vous ayez apprécié la vidéo et merci d'avoir regardé.
Gary
That's one cute frog! A lovely job, Gary. Really lovely!
Thank you Pauline, yes he sure is cute. Now he needs a name.
Take care,
Gary
Very nice turning Gary! I love seeing what you discover inside each chunk of wood. This one turned out really beautiful, and had a frog in it! Thanks for another great lesson, and a beautiful piece of work. I will see you next week.
Thank you very much Mark and looking forward to seeing you next week.
Take care,
Gary
This Magnolia seems to be a very wide grained wood & this piece certainly does have very interesting growth ring pattern to it. It turned brilliantly in its wet state which makes me wonder how well it would turn if very dry. A very nice pleasing shaped bowl so well turned, as always & as we would all expect from you Gary. Lovely finish on the bowl too. Thanks for sharing & stay safe & well my friend. Don from South Aust.
Thank you Don, I have the other half of this log drying so maybe I will find out. Just not sure I want to wait. I also have 2 crotch pieces. I could have gotten a few truck loads but it was a bit of work getting out of the yard it was in. Up hill and had to use a wheel barrel.
Take care,
Gary
Nicely done nice woodfrog
Thank you Paul and thanks for watching,
Gary
Your Frog looked like it just pooped.
Nice work
Oh dear! You do have to watch those darn frogs LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice, Love it.
Thank you very much Eileen!
Beautiful Piece Gary! That’s really neat to see that frog in there 🐸, Enjoyed the video! 👍
Thank you Kimsey. Yeah that frog did not try to hide at all LOL. Thanks for watching,
Gary
Awesome video as always. Love the grain in that bowl. The frog is cool. Take care and be safe. Keep up the awesome work.
Thank you very much Allen. Happy you like my little pet frog.
Take care,
Gary
Looks good, see the frog.
Thank you Brad and thanks for watching.
Gary
Looks great
Thank you Nate!
I saw that frog!!! Great bowl and I too have never turned magnolia. I had some growing on some property I owned but never tried doing anything with it. Good looking bowl.
Thank you John. When I saw the wood offered just the name was enough for me wanting to try some.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
nice job. can't think of anything else to say except wow
Thank you Tim. That is good enough for me.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Good morning, Gary.
I enjoyed your video and the commentary was well done and helpful. Magnolia is new to me and I agree with you about the beauty that comes from the growth rings. I have experienced the same staining on the end grain with some turnings and no
explanation. Thumbs up.
Thank you Ray. The staining is part of nature and came with the wood so I am fine with it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice wood & bowl, Gary! Somewhat surprising (to me) that it didn't check using the fan. There is always more to learn.
Thank you Louis! Going off what I read and just turning the wood I really thought it was going to be fine. That would not be the case with Plum or Cherry for sure.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Love the frog
Thank you Maryke and thanks for watching.
Gary
Really interesting. Thanks
Thank you very much and thanks for watching!
Nice bowl, Gary. We have magnolias and pecan trees on our property. I will have to think about gathering some for turning. I do wonder how a little stain might look on that magnolia grain.
Thank you Qapla. Pecan sounds really interesting. Close to 50 years ago I made my wife a Pecan lidden box. I cut the Pecan into segments. I really like the wood. The Magnolia might look good with some color but I like to at least do the first on as natural as I can.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Ha Ha given the title the entire video I was looking for a frog to pop out or you to find a froggy skeleton. That’s funny! Of course after you pointed it out I saw the frog clearly. Great piece great video Gary!!
Thank you Victor...I hope you were not too disappointed that the frog did not hope out and run away.
I thought it was a catchy title.
Take care,
Gary
Hi Gary, another lovely bowl and super video, thank you - I always learn so much watching you. I turned 3 small bowls from seasoned branches of magnolia which grew in my garden (Nottingham, UK). Like yours, they have great grain patterns, and also (being much smaller) some 'blemishes' and bark. I am very pleased with how they turned out, the magnolia was good to work, and took the finish well. Amazingly, 1 of the 'blemishes' finished in the shape of a crown, I have no idea how, but very apt as I turned it on the weekend of our Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
PS, Yes, I see your frog!
Thank you David. The bowls you turned sound wonderful.
Happy you enjoy my videos and thanks for watching.
