- Last week's video was all about the James Webb Space Telescope. In that video, I interviewed Dr. Sarah Kendrew (Astronomer and Instrument Scientist for the @EuropeanSpaceAgency at the Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, USA) who has spent 10 years developing one of the detectors that will go on the James Webb Space Telescope. This is the full-length version of our chat.
You can follow Dr. Sarah Kendrew as we get closer to the launch date in October 2021 on social media here: / sarahkendrew

👩🏽💻 I'm Dr Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

@@BurnabyAlex Oh ok thanks for the tip
I'm SO glad you asked the 'longevity' question i've been whining about on almost every 'Webb' vid i can comment on .. Thank you so much Dr. Becky ;)
Hubble has been going strong for 30 🤷🏻♂️
@@xyzpdq1122 So if the Hubble has survived for so long then the Webb being more powerful than the Hubble should easily last longer!
@@backstreets2473 Unfortunately, this is not the case. Hubble is situated in low earth orbit. NASA has made multiple trips to Hubble. They have actually opened it up to repair it and add upgrades etc. The distance to Hubble is approximately 540 kilometers.
JWST is going to be unreachable by manned space flights unless we rapidly develop new technology that allows us to do such things.
The L2 Lagrange point they are talking about which is where JWST will orbit, is 1.5 million kilometers away.
Even though they are being conservative with their estimations of fuel consumption, do you really think their 5 year minimum will translate into 6 times that duration ?
@@raifsevrence So then the only hope we have is to develop new technology that will allow people to reach the telescope faster! I hope we can achieve that!
@@raifsevrence That said, we can't even service the Hubble Space Telescope any more (Shuttle decommissioned long before a true replacement is available).
Too bad they couldn't put the James Webb Space Telescope out at L4 or L5 -- those points are truly stable (as long as nothing massive goes by), which would greatly minimize station-keeping fuel consumption. Unfortunately, that would require heftier communications equipment on both ends to get the bandwidth, which would drive launch costs up for a given size of mirror/etc.

Many people are commenting about the lack of refueling capability on the JWST and are asking why it is that way. What has not been stressed enough in discussing the JWST is that it will be located at L2, which for the Earth means about 1.5 _million_ kilometers away. This puts JWST far beyond any current plans for manned space capabilities for routine missions. While one then may think that the JWST ought to have been designed to be refueled by robotic missions, such a capability would require developing that capability for JWST (because that capability does not currently exist), and developing this type of refueling capability would itself add greatly to the cost of the mission.
As this not the first out of fuel orbiter case this more the normal space field really should spend the separate money to develop a robot refill ability for future missions.
With desire to go to Mars practice with a manned mission to the L points to do maintenance sounds like a good practice. A shuttle replacement of it's stuff also needed. That might actually be something that flies from the space station with the fuel coming up to the space station the way get it there now.
Nothing cheap of course but Shuttle failed in that it really was not practical to recycle money or safety wise a ship like that.

By the time it runs out of fuel, we should have service equipment that can either refuel it or attach to it as an added engine/fuel module. It can be extended and at some point replaced by newer tech or rehabed with the newer stuff. It could have an indefinite lifetime.

@Dr. Becky >>> Cost aside, if spacecraft like SpaceX's Starship are available before JWST exhausts it's propellant supply, would it be possible to rendezvous with JWST at it's LaGrange point and refuel JWST?
After jwst is ready, the shipping will need to dodge hurricanes, survive loading on the rocket, the fairing vents working better, the new vibrations subdued, and then jwst starts it tricky unwrapping. When they made the James Web telescope did they do anything like make multiple copies of hardware incase things don't go well on the launch pad?
My guess is that all instruments would be stowed for flight, and hardware malfunctions would go undetected until deployed at the final destination. If anything, spares would be assembled into a mockup platform on the ground, for fault diagnosis.
Thinking more of losing the launch vehicle, its happened before

There have been cases over the years where the developers of some instruments have made entire copies or spare parts of their particular contribution. It isn't beyond the wit and wisdom of the engineers to refuel the JWST when the time comes. An unmanned probe could rendezvous with the scope to effect fuel transfer, in much the same way the Dragon capsules visit the ISS. So my view is refuelling is viable for the scope. And the forwarding of human knowledge. Before I go, kudos to all the technicians and engineers and programmers who contribute to this amazing project. And Sarah! Her team are going to have a few nice surprises once main rollout begins. And this is how History gets forged. Love to all!
Dr.Becky, you need to do a playthrough of a mission in "Powerwash Simulator", as they've got a "special mission" where you need to powerwash the Mars Rover... on the surface of Mars!
You can even see Ingenuity hovering around in the background on a test flight.
(Okay, "null points" for realism, as how are you breathing on Mars? And, more than that, where are you getting all the water from? Ah, it's a game. It's taking advantage of the fact that not everything needs to be 100% realistic in a video game.)
And, yeah, despite what "Powerwash Simulator" sounds like, it's actually a really enjoyable game. Very chillaxing. And I reckon the developer is a space fan, because why else stick something so incongruous as a Mars Rover into the game? And the 3D model seems detailed, as each of the instruments is labelled and needs a good powerwash to clean off that Mars dust.
Well, even if you don't play the game yourself, then you should at least look up someone else playing that special mission, as I reckon you'll get a kick out of it. Spraying down the spectrometer and all that, until it's all shiny clean.
I wonder, in case JWST is still in technically good condition by the time the fuel runs out, if it wouldn't make sense for an additional mission that sends out a tug probe. With lots of fuel onboard, thrusters of its own. The tug would gently attach itself to JWST and take over the positioning. IMO that'd be worth considering for future such mission. Include an attachment port just in case the hardware is fit for ongoing observations.
OrbitalATK has already launched the MEV-1 satellite to couple up with an Intelsat satellite to provide thrust to extend Intelsat's life so I wonder if that might be possible with JWST.

hi can you explain the twistor theory please plase please
and, will we be able to see further into the past with the JWST
We planned and designed the James Webb Space Telescope in the 1970s or early 80s.
Actually it was a concept then. The final design kept changing with newer tech. Main reason for the 10 billion $ price tag.
@@nickt.2825 Correct. As with the software we developed for Microsoft up to 80s, kept updated through the times, but we had precedence hence co-ownerhip ($$$). We're unknown pioneers. No share of that $10bn price tag, for example. Same in *my* Hollywood music and movies blockbusters, taken from me.
I would have liked to ask: "What is the life expectancy of the instruments? Are they generally much longer than the predicted life of the space craft, or are any of them shorter? What is the relationship between the lifespans of the complete set of instruments, and the craft?"
I think it's only limited by the fuel to keep it in orbit. There are options for a robot to refuel in the future if new tech makes it possible.

They will be going relatively slowly so they will fire the thrusters in the direction they are travelling, then again to establish orbit around L2
Remember too they won't be stopping, rather matching the orbital speed of the earth relative to the sun.
Do black holes give off infrared or the stuff spiraling around them if so will we get a Better image of the black hole at the centre of the universe that would be amazing
