- A week ago the Dark Energy Survey released its long-awaited 3 years worth of data - the positions of 226 million galaxies! Along with that came a whole load of new science in 30 papers (!) - I dived into them and picked out all the highlights, plus I spoke to Dr. Alexandra Amon on the DES team about her results showing dark matter might be distributed more smoothly than. we thought.

In every English dictionary EVER, including British ones such as the OED, it is listed as "Aitch". In NO English dictionary ever will you find "Haitch", because it only exists in the minds of the wilfully unlettered.

@Train 2noplace All I will say to this is just because we don't know now doesn't mean we'll never know. Remember, only a bit over 100 years ago it was still thought impossible for humans to fly. In that INCREDIBLY short time span we've been to the moon, and are fairly regularly sending remote controlled robots to Mars. Not to mention a long lasting presence in space in the international space station.
Who knows what we'll discover in the next 100 or even 1000 years?

I really appreciate these interviews too. They highlight the people doing the science. Their excitement is infectious (can one use that word in a positive light? - I hope so!)

The big rip theory would make a great sci fi plot. We have to get into another universe because ours is ending. But our bodies are not able to exist in their universes physics. So we have to scramble to find a universe that can sustain us. Before the molecules in our universe are no longer held together.
Because of how long it would take for our universe to end, it would be at least billions of years after we figure out how to do that (if it's even possible) that our universe would be destroyed.
The Heechee Saga by Frederik Pohl was written before dark energy was even theorized, so there's no big rip, but the concept of surviving the big crunch does play a role in the story. (No more details to avoid unnecessary spoilers.)
It would need to be ridiculously quickened to become movie script stuff. But Hollywood can do such things. Remember "The day after tomorrow" with frozen New York and temperatures decreasing in days by what they would in years (if not longer) in a real rapid climate change scenario?
In the balloon analogy of space expansion, the Big Rip is the balloon popping... so we need to stop whoever's blowing up the balloon with four dimensional air. Yeah. Definitely. That's what we have to do.

Dr. Becky is a national (International?) treasure. Making highly complex science accessible and understandable to all in a way that is engaging and fun, all without talking down to the audience. Great work and keep it up :)

The whole world is benefitting from her wonderful ability to talk so plainly about her love. There are many cutting edge physicists but most of them can't teach a college physics class without mumbling and five syllable words. Dr Becky speaks so clearly and articulately and breaks down the jargon into anecdotes of their own that it's easy to forget this is learning.
I very much appreciate the extra time it took you to produce this, the added research and effort really shows.

I am always just blown away to see how far we've come in understanding our universe. Thinking back just a decade or 2 really puts it into perspective.

Loved hearing Dr. Amon speaking about interdisciplinary cooperation in astrophysics. I feel like that’s so important to unlocking the potential of our new detection abilities.
It's going to be difficult to achieve since some of the disciplines tend to regard each other as adversaries rather than contemporaries with both trying to answer the same basic questions, just through different means and methods. Then there are those who guard their work extremely jealously because they are afraid of someone "stealing their idea" and possibly their shot at a Nobel. Sadly, they're not without historical evidence of this happening. It boils down to people need to become willing to set aside their desire for personal aggrandizement in search of a deeper understanding for all humanity. The different fields have so much to offer each other IF they can set aside certain fundamental philosophical differences. Although, in the end, it ALL comes down to mathematics and our understanding of the mathematical correlation of one given thing to another. For instance, how does quantum entanglement REALLY work? We know that it happens and even have direct evidence that it DOES happen... but how and why? There HAS to be a mathematical correlation between the two particles, but what is the relation, how is it formed and why is it formed? Deep questions that I think will need the combined efforts of astrophysicists, quantum mechanics engineers... possibly even string theorists. VERY different disciplines and very different ways of looking at a problem. My thought is that it's basically the old trope about the blind men and the elephant. Each trying to describe the animal based on their own area of observation without being able to combine them and get the whole picture. Once they figure out how to set aside their differences and personal animosity, start trying to see how the data from project A can possibly work together with that of project B and get answers that, while seemingly going against all current models, actually present a much better understanding of the larger questions. For instance where Dr Becky, in a different video, talks about how two neutron stars merged and the resulting explosion turned out to go against every single model of what SHOULD happen based on our current understanding of physics. Talk about turning science on it's head, wow. Turns out that there WAS an answer, it just needs to be looked at from a different perspective than had previously been used. I really hope that they can learn how to "take the best from all sides" and perhaps form an entirely new discipline... which would potentially put us a step or two closer to the ever elusive Grand Unification Theory

The Einstein-Hate, so to speak, comes in large part from the fact that while GR explains the really huge things in the universe, only QM really explains the extremely tiny things in the universe. So you have Team Einstein on one side ... Relativity will eventually explain QM ... and you have Team Copenhagen on the other side, hoping that QM will eventually explain relativity. And the more reasonable folks are trying to reconcile them, with ideas like Quantum Gravity. Which, unfortunately, doesn't work. Maybe M-theory will eventually sew it all together. Once we find the other 22 dimensions...

I love these videos about dark energy. I returned to school to start my degrees in astrophysics and computer science because I want to study dark energy. I actually have a back of the napkin theory about dark energy that I'd love to test mathematically.

Before doubting GR, I would DOUBT any-and-all simulations of universe formation. Simulations are fraught with assumptions and even errors.
That was my thought as well. If the simulation turns up something that doesn't fit with observation, it is more plausible that some technical detail of the simulation is off than that the basic laws are wrong.
I'm still puzzled by the TV remote, so this is way above my head... but still absolutely fascinating!
Thank you for your hard work, and don't be negative about your self for making mistakes, you are human and to be fair you had just been busy "digesting" disseminating information from 30 papers to pass the rounded relevant info onto meer commoners like myself.

As an Astrophysics PhD student who finds reading papers extremely difficult and pain staking, THANKYOU FOR THIS SUMMARY
I am working toward a BA in Math so I can eventually get a PhD in astrophysics. When my parents get mad that I'm on my phone. I'm usually readings thesis papers or dissertations. I love it.
The conversation with Dr. Amon raises an important question: when do we get to see you play your ukulele?
A lovely exposition of how actual science is done. Methodological adjustment in light ( pun noted) of observation. This smells to me like cosmology going from collecting finches to considering means of biological evolution, or from alchemy to Priestly and Dalton. Keep it up!

Just a question of terminology: When the main hypothesis is that it is another force of nature, why then does it get called dark energy and not simply dark force? If we're dealing with a force that pushes, then I'm sure there is some energy carried by that force, but why focus on the energy and not the force? Isn't the energy secondary?
Given that we're able to give a percentage of the energy budget of the universe that is currently in dark energy, I assume dark energy is in some way commensurable with other forms of energy, and can be measured literally in joules. So it doesn't sound like the choice to call it "dark energy" is entirely hand-wavy.
last I knew we dont know anything about the truth behind dark energy or dark matter beyond our own equations about other things not adding up. For all we know the answer to dark matter is a math mistake and the answer to dark energy is its just diffusion.
Maybe because that would be confusing if a new mysterious force is discovered.

That dataset looks absolutely enormous. How is that dataset produced? I assume a normal survey image (with or without some filter) would not give you the redshift data of the galaxies, but getting the redshift data for so many galaxies seems undoable. Where can I find out more about how this dataset was made?

I know that gravity makes things accelerate because the pull in front is stronger than the pull behind.
But dark energy is the same strength throughout the universe, isn't it? The push in front is the same as the push from behind, so how can it cause acceleration?
