There's something really frightening about that final shot of Cady as he drowns, staring hatefully at Sam. It's like only his hatred keeps him alive for a few moments longer.
He was like a crocodile or an alligator stalking its prey in the water

DeNiro actually didn’t pump any iron for this role. He did work with a personal trainer and worked out for hours every day, but for the sake of authenticity they designed a program purely of calisthenics based off the limited resources a prisoner has available.
Tom Hardy did the same for Bronson. Got absolutely yoked doing bodyweight fitness. The trapezoids were comical!

If Anthony Hopkins had not given such an incredible performance in The Silence Of The Lambs, De Niro would have one the Oscar for this performance.

Even though Sam and his family survived, and Max Cady died, Cady still managed to enact his revenge on them. The PTSD he put them through would last a long time, if not forever.
Didn't Nietzsche also write what ever doesn't kill you makes you stronger. So maybe it was a growth opportunity and a chance for family bonding.

Cady tormented the family,had them at each other's throats,got Sam in trouble by recording his threats,murdered their dog,annihilated Sam's side piece,beat the sht out of those 3 inept thugs Sam sent to tune Cady up,and sent Sam's bodyguard straight to hell after he choked their house keeper,Graciella to death with a piano wire! Then Cady inflicted further torture by assaulting them on the boat,terrorized the women with the threat of sexual assault and nearly turned Sam into a killer but for the surge of water that washed Cady out to the middle of the river.
Yeah,Its damn well guaranteed that long after his death,Max Cady will live in their heads for eternity.

This film isn't exactly obscure or anything, but I feel like it's somewhat underrated in the Scorsese canon, the DeNiro canon, and the canon of great film villain performances in general. The movie isn't perfect but I kinda think DeNiro's performance is.

Definitely Evil. Despite being an illiterate man at the time of his crimes to being a well learned man with an incredible self education into Law, literature, and philosophy, he could never unlearn the one thing that got him arrested in the first place; Violence is the ultimate conclusion to any problem.
Scarily, Cady could have gotten everything he wanted without breaking a single law. He could have destroyed Bowden's entire life without ever having to resort to violence. He could have easily ruined Bowden's marriage upon discovering his affair and then telling his wife about it earnestly. He could have manipulated his daughter against her parents without resorting to sexual advances. He could have destroyed Bowden's entire law career and got him disbarred by winning his case against Bowden for his misconduct. Just like that he would have destroyed bowden's marriage, his relationship with his daughter, his means of income and career, and by the end of it Bowden himself most likely would have either killed himself or became a shallow husk of a man he once was... and if that wasn't enough for Cady, he still could have chosen to murder Bowen in the end and he still would have lost all the things he held dear in his life before it.
.... but that wasn't enough for Cady.. Instead of just revealing the affair, he seduced, raped, and brutalized the woman Bowden was having an affair with. He openly stalked Bowden and his family with the intent to discomfort and terrorize them. He targeted Bowden's daughter with the intent of not only manipulating her to go against her parents, but most likely to rape and brutalize her as well, which is the same fate he had planned for his wife. He killed a man in Bowden's house with piano wire he stole from Bowden's piano with the intent to frame him for murder and isolate him and his family so he could confront Bowden, then make him watch all the terrible things he had planned for his family before killing him as well. If you look at the philosophies Cady studied in prison, none of these brutal actions seem in any way necessary, and in fact may be in conflict with many of his beliefs, or at least what he says he believes....
But when you get down to it... an uneducated man, or a frighteningly intelligent self educated one, the man was always (and could never be anything but) sadistic, violent, and psychopathic to his very core. True evil, in my opinion.
Lack of moderation is quite common villainous trait. Not knowing what is enough to achieve their goal.
I agree with this take, the non-violent path would have been MUCH more evil because he could have gotten it all and destroyed his very target to his core. Making Bowden to become like he was violent, extremely so. As a means to defend himself and what he earned making the revenge complete would be Bowden killing Cady and losing everything to ironically complete the cycle. Cady remains evil yet his methods of corruption are complete.

Also worth noting that while Sam did sabotage Max’s defense, it probably did not harm Max as much as he makes out. Sam mentions Max had boasted to him about attacking other women, and the reason he buried the report was because he saw images of just how brutally Max had attacked his latest one. So while Max believes the report would have gotten him off Scott free, it’s just as likely that once a jury saw what he had done they still would have sentenced him to jail, but he might have gotten a shorter term for it. And even if he had gotten off, he was almost certainly going to do it again, in which case he’d be a multi-time offender and would go up for even longer. Yet Max totally shirks off any of his own responsibility and frames it as Sam being solely responsible for his lost years.
Would he be evil if he had taken the legal and just manipulative revenge?
“It's not necessary to lay a foul tongue on me my friend. I could get upset. Things could get out of hand. Then in self defense, I could do something to you that you would not like, right here.”
The tragedy of this character is how Max has turned himself into a man who could probably achieve nearly anything he set his mind to, but he squanders all the possibilities he has given himself in his quest for revenge
I remember seeing this at about 10 years old and being terrified for days. I spent many sleepless nights wondering about the madman character of Max. It was the first non-monster & non-horror movie to scare me.
Max Cady is one of few characters who have genuinely gripped me with fear. Amazing performance by De Niro.
He was certainly great in it but not as good as Mitchum in the original.
Same. And he managed to encompass the real men who are like that amazingly. My ex husband was exactly like this dude (no where near as smart despite thinking he was) he found me when I was 17 (he was 45 )and got me hooked on drugs and after convincing me to go down to the court house and marry him after a week long bender of meth, oxy and other drugs and alcohol. After that he subjected me to a life basically of a s*x trade victim. He would beat the hell out of me all the time and do whatever he wanted with my body whenever he wanted, kept me isolated from my loved ones, told me when I could eat and what I could eat, how to dress, when I was allowed to sleep, when I could shower etc, and kept me high and addicted so I wouldn't try to get away as often. He gamed the system, was a criminal, and a general fucking piece of shit hillbilly. He reveled in how much of a piece of shit he was and found it funny. I tried getting away from him multiple times to no avail. Finally he went to prison for beating me to a bloody pulp and it was enough time for me to get clean, get back on my own two feet and reestablish a close relationship with my friends and loved ones who then helped me become even more successful. I went from being a homeless, addicted, battered and beaten woman to where I am now; clean over 6 years, you certified chemical dependency counselor is assistant, a senior in college to further my education by getting my bachelor's degree in psychological science with a criminal Justice minor, two beautiful daughters, a home owner of a lovely safe home in a quiet friendly wonderful suburban neighborhood, and of course a owner of my two awesome doggies☺️. And as for him, not too long after he got out of prison, he ended up dying miserable and alone, homeless and addicted, and from what I heard was even a John Doe for like 30 days when he first died because nobody cared about him enough to look for him and he didn't have an ID or wallet or anything on him. And while I am very proud of what I've been able to make of my life and how drastically I was able to change my circumstances, in the end there is a part of me that will never be quite right again because of all he has done to me. As much as I don't want to admit it, he still left his mark on me and I'll never be exactly the same as I once was ever again. Even though part of me feels like I won since he always told me that if I ever left him he would kill me... and Since HE was the one who died... I still cannot say I managed to get away unscathed. I had horrific unimaginable nightmares for about two years pretty much every time I fell asleep. They're much less now but every now and then I'll have them. I have issues with anxiety and can have anger issues sometimes. My doctor diagnosed me with PTSD and said these are common symptoms which is true but I still feel almost disappointed with myself in that I couldn't manage to be able to overcome all he did without even having so much as a scar. Which is probably impossible but I still wish I could have done it. I'm sure he is burning in hell right now laughing that he managed to make sure I was never totally the same after I got away from him. But for all I went through I am doing pretty well. I think I still succeeded in over coming it all. Just not completely unbothered by it.

Vile Eye couldn't have picked a better character than Max Cady. Smh I remember, when I first saw Cape Fear in 1991 at 12-years old. The movie was almost, like a horror title. Robert DeNiro played the hell out that character. Should've won an Oscar.
I was 16 and I thought it was a horror.
The only reason he didn't was because Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs was his competition.

An Great Film with An Equally Great Antagonist. Mr. Cady is definitely one of the most disturb, creepy, and fearful characters in existence. And the scary thing is, that there are people out there, just like him.

My top 3 movie.
Great synopsis of one of my favorite characters in the film. Villain or victim, I always thought that Max was first and foremost a narcissist. That being the driving force behind his desire to avenge his perceived losses by improving himself. In the film, he seemed very obsessive about his appearance, Taking time to dye his hair, wearing flamboyant clothing, even listening to opera gave the feeling of a man who has quantified his losses specifically in the terms of the time that was taken from him. It’s almost as if he experienced the exact opposite of what prison is designed to do.
Implying prison was designed to reform criminals instead of just extract free labor from them then toss them back out on the street once their sentence is served

What makes Max Cady an effective antagonist is that literally anyone can be put into his position, and these types of people do exist among us, waiting for the right moment to strike.
Just recently watched it. Great movie and amazing performance by De Niro, definitely one of his best. That final scene in which he is speaking in tongues really creeped me out.

Max Cady is a very intriguing villain. His character has stuck in my head ever since I saw the movie.
Its scary, because he sincerely could have rebuilt his life and did well for himself, but he was so motivated by hate. He was like a terminator in that he could not be bargained with, intimidated, or stopped. But worse in that he also sought to torture his victims before killing them.

A friend took me to this movie in 1991. One of the first R rated films I saw in a theatre, and it left a very deep impression that apparently went straight to long-term memory. 30 years ago, and I didn't even need a refresher to follow along here. Sometimes I still look under my car to see that no one is there. Thanks for the analysis.
I always appreciated the different interpretation from the book mostly because while it was interesting that Bowden’s character was a lawyer using the law in a somewhat devious way such as setting up an ambush for Cady. I find is so much more fitting that Cady was the one who became a near equal to Bowden in terms of the law. Regardless the original book had a vastly more interesting family dynamic imo but the real show was between Bowden and Cady so I understand why some parts were removed
Max Cady was man who despite his horrifying deeds had tremendously strong sense of right-and-wrong. He knew what he had done was wrong and still did it. He went to jail for it and he had no problem with that idea. It was right thing to happen. Man who was meant to represent him in court of law and deliberately failed to do it and kept it hidden was severe breach against his sense of right and wrong and despite his extreme methods (way disproportionate) his moral sense does connect with many people.
Before Anton Chigurh frightened me, Max Cady haunted my dreams.
No Country for Old Men is my favorite movie and this is right now my second favorite. Between the two villains I’d definitely say Anton is scarier but Max is just fucking down right awful.

For me max cady is the perfection of the real villain that we could encounter in real life a man that has shaped his body, mind and beliefs toward one thing and one thing only. His redemption for something he thought was wrong and unfair loosing what he may have been in the process

To me i felt Sam reasons for burying the report was justified as he knew Max cady was a danger to the public and knew he could do it again hinting Sam may of seen this before and never wanted to see the same victim fall into prey of someone like Max cady

I think you should analyze all the villains played by Robert Deniro. He does a good job of bringing the scumbag out of the character.
The work you're doing is valuable, because too many of us have a capacity for evil. Understanding fictional characters that display varying degrees of that potential, and delving into who they were inspired by, is an excellent avenue for self-observation and recognition of evil in those around us.
A person is worthless without a capacity for evil.

This version of Cape Fear appeared on Netflix recently and I enjoyed it. It's serendipitous to be able to get the Vile Eye's gaze on it.
A suggestion of mine for another video would be Harry Powell (The Deranged Preacher) from Charles Laughton's The Night of the Hunter, a film that was to my understanding, a commercial failure, most probably because it was decades ahead of its time.

I just found your channel, and literally just put every one of your videos into my watch later list. Going through them now. Dude. I am blown away, and am so excited to have found your page. I chose this specific video to comment on, because I am currently writing a feature length script on a sequel to Cape Fear. Mostly just for practice, but also with the intent on pitching/selling it to Universal Studios. It will serve as a half-sequel / half-remake of the book and the 1962 movie. I have been needing a deeper dive into the mind of Max Cady, so I am beyond excited to have this analysis available. Thank you for it.

I look forward to when you do the original Robert Mitchum version later, also I would recommend Henery Powell from Night of the hunter also. Another good villain roll of Mitchum.
I have always regarded Scorcese's Cape Fear as being not just a remake of the original Cape Fear but of The Night of the Hunter too. De Niro's Cady seems to have as much of Mitchum's corrupt murderous false preacher Harry Powell in him as he did Mitchum's shady brutal con man in the '62 version of Cape Fear.
Fun tidbit: in his youth Mitchum spent some time bumming across America, stowing away on trains, living out of hobo camps. During his meandering he encountered some real life backwoods communities. He drew off the experience to portray Harry Powell.

A weird dichotomy with Tommy was he was a loving family man when it came to his mom and son.

I always saw Cady as a possible path for Travis Bickle. The difference was circumstance.
That's the scary part about Travis Bickle is that he was a ticking time bomb. The only difference is that he had circumstances that resulted in him being somewhat satisfied with himself for a while. If you remember the final scene where he looks at the rare mirror it shows that he's still capable and willing to commit crazy acts if he wants
Two totally different characters with totally different pathology
Only similarity: both played by De Niro
The other way around Bickle made Cady be the man he became.
I enjoy this series. It’s concise, and always well researched.
Just the way he says "counselor" every time makes it worth watching.

While which film is better is debatable and Robert Mitchum is an amazing actor, still think De Niro's Cady was the best version of the character. Mitchum's version was more classy and tame while De Niro is brutal and has more psychotic depth. Mitchum's portrayal would have you looking behind your back while De Niro makes you wanna go into an underground shelter.

The year of my birth(91) was a great year for films and Cape Fear was one of them in terms of storytelling and a classic revenge flick. But it is deeper in terms in Max Cady as VE says. But at the same time Sam is not as clean as he seems to be.
Danielle should've made him sing the whole entire score of the HMS Pinafore to buy time to get her parents to call the police.
