      @@DefinitelyNotEmma Yes lol, the ussr was a state capitalist empire that gave a different name to the bourgeoisie, the ussr doesn’t even stand up to the basic tenets of communism put forward by the communist manifesto, the introductory book marx wrote for ignorant liberals. Lenin never wanted stalin to take power, and Stalin had Trotsky exiled and killed for opposing him. Trotsky himself had anarchists and socialists in ukraine executed for opposing the bolsheviks. The ussr fell prey to the same imperialist capitalist drives and corruption that today’s china has. It’s nonsense to bring this up during a conversation about the cons of capitalism, you’re just trying to obfuscate the issues we have to deal with today.

    • @Kushufy

      you dont mean narcissism, but machiavellianism. in the movie he actually has a comically low degree of narcissism, not just for a psychopath but for normal people as well, never acting like he is entitled to anything and caring very little about other people approving of him. you can see in the movie that when he is trying to get something out of someone and they reject him, he will either immediately give up and focus his attention somewhere else, try to manipulate them with lies or fake charm, or use his power to bargain with them. this is completely the opposite of narcissism. he is like a computer, with no sense of identity and no cares in the world other than accomplishing an objective in the most logical way possible. "believing in fending for himself" just means he is egotistical. narcissists are egotistical, but being egotistical doesn't suggest you are narcissistic. it depends on how it manifests.

Jake Gyllenhaal is truly one of the rare ones that can fully embrace his character and turn into a completely different person. He makes people forget that he's still Jake Gyllenhaal outside of the movie and not Lou Bloom. This applies to any other movie he's also done.

    I've seen this a number of times, it is EXCELLENT! Truly one of the best characters Gyllenhall has portrayed going back to Donnie Darko!
    Yet, I still go back and forth trying to decide if he is supposed to be slightly on the Autism spectrum on top of having the classic traits of sociopathy ( at least Hollywood's Stereotypical concept of it ), or if he's just Straight Up the poster boy for Sociopathy ( bordering on Psychopathy ) and Antisocial Personality Disorder.
    It is a complex character with rather straight forward motives, which makes it fun because the more you watch it the more of subtle layers you can pick up on. And see the subtext of the story I believe the writer threw in about the sickness of our media and how it's furthering social decay. Whether intentional or not.
    And Lou is just like the personification of Raw Ambition Unleashed.
    As one has to wonder what kind of a morally and even spiritually Bankrupt person Mainstream Media tends to attract to it. Someone who is willing to push Negativity, to push Fear, lies, Govt or Establishment propaganda to the masses, knowing full well it leads to angst, rage, division, distrust of institutions, a loss of faith and hope in society ... JUST TO GET THOSE RATINGS, CELEBRITY and that BIG CORPORATE PAYCHECK! All without a single care or sense of responsibility for the damage it has been and continues to cause.
    Especially now in the age of MONEY FOR CLICKS. Encouraging Fake And or Misleading Headlines that often aren't even congruent With the copy of the story. Or knowing that it might lead to people electing A crook who lies to them, Flagrantly abuses authority, and appears by all forms of logic and reason to be INTENTIONALLY WORKING TO DESTABILIZE AND DESTROY OUR COUNTRY!! Creating Endless Suffering...
    Something their Lies and deceit directly led to (granted that latter part hadn't yet occurred when this was made).
    That takes a sick and soulless person.

      In this movie Lou is very obviously the villain protagonist but this youtube video seems to demonize him for not valuing human life. I think I like Lou's perspective that life is not inherently valuable because the movie itself demonstrates how Lou has no value outside of the things he provides people for.
      You could say the opening is a foreshadow for the entire movie because the Foreman will buy the stolen metal off of Lou but will not give Lou a job when he asks for it, thus trapping Lou in the cycle of committing crimes for money. Therefore Lou has no value if he cannot provide things for other people and he simply enacts the same quid pro quo on the characters of the film once the tables turn.

    • @Uptomyknees
      @Uptomyknees Před 3 lety +61

      @@matthewmelange See, I don't think of the opening conversation as a turning point. We just view Lou differently.
      There is very little question in my mind that Lou has caused harm in his life, possibly great harm, before we met him, and the movie isn't so much about his downfall, but about us getting to know him.
      He's in his mid-30s. Maybe late 30s. In my eyes, there's no way he ended up like this without playing out many other options. When we see his approach to his "love interest," it's not new for him.
      This is something he's done before when he wants and needs sex.
      I think the different between you and I is that while we both sympathize with Lou, you're giving him the benefit of the doubt, whereas I think his final treatment of Rick shows us something really terrifying and predatory, something we can safely judge as wrong without questioning it.
      And the movie fucks with the audience, because at that point you almost DON'T WANT Lou to be bad. You want him to find another way to be successful.
      But he's just not that smart, and has intellectual curiosity only about things that can directly help him. This is a dangerous way to live, and a dangerous person to be around.
      Someone who will eat you if it occurs to them even briefly that they need to do so.

    I absolutely love the way the screenplay introduces him and gradually shifts your perspective as the movie progresses and tells you more about his character. In the beginning he checks all the check marks of a good underdog. He's a bit odd, socially inept man who can't hold a job, who doesn't fit in the society, and who lives in a small rundown apartment just wanting to succeed in life. But the more you learn about him and the further he goes in that pursuit of success, the more terrifying and distant he becomes.

      @MegatronYES Před 2 lety +14

      Well I felt damn near the opposite. He starts as a common manipulative scummy criminal that anyone would avoid, and by the end he is a typical “came from nothing” business-owner type.

      @@Rooster_of_Rivia I'm sorry, but your message is very long and incoherent. But what I gathered you are mostly proving my point. All the hints are there, but the movie purposefully leaves them to the background. Instead the focus is on Lou's charm and the way he manipulates people's perception of him, while using those same tactics on the audience.
      What is absolutely disagree with is the part about a sequel. The movie has it's critique about the society it is set in and shines a light on an individual that often isn't the main character. It shows how people like Lou navigate the society, and how they benefit from their lack of empathy in a culture, where shock factor and drama are the factors that get the ratings. It is a good self contained piece of media that would gain nothing from a sequel.

    Coming back to this after seeing a CZcamsr react to this sick & disgusting video of a guy that watched a man get killed in front of his daughter for telling another man to stop smoking around them. The guy that recorded it was smiling and constantly talking about how the dude got killed, meanwhile walking up to his body, never once calling the police or attempting to help the man as he bled out. He was a real life Lou Bloom & it was one of the most disturbing things I’d ever seen. It’s one thing to see fictions or hear of there being people like this in the real world, but when you actually see it… it’s insane

I remember when i first saw this film he came off like a machine , like the Terminator from T2 before his chip was reset to so it can learn and understand emotions from human interactions and not just go off pre loaded data ..lou in the film is shown to be incapable of having reset like that which makes him a frighting character .another fictional being he reminds me of is the shark from jaws ...eats ,sleeps ,and makes baby sharks thats all it does....this film really knocked it out of the park with a believable sociopath.
