    I had a friend in high school that bought one of these in 1997 for $1500 (I think, it's been awhile) because it's all he could afford and an old couple on his neighborhood was going to donate it otherwise. Man, that car was fun, and I wish prices were still like that. But it never will be again, so thanks for bringing back those memories of our stupidity and luck back in the day.

      My first car was a 64 Buick Skylark, a white 2 door with air shocks in the back and even had a decent tape deck and stereo. Not cherry but in decent condition, cost a whopping $1000 bucks in 1997. Had a 300 rocket and a weird not a powerglide 2 speed auto.
      Got something more modern, couldn't keep it running well enough....it never cratered but it was impractical. I wish I had it now!

      I saw one for $2500 in 2008 after my w124 stop going forwards. The Le Mans was cheaper than a new transmission, but dad said no, because I was strapped between an interstate move to a university from a community college. The junker 90s Grand Am I got instead wouldn't unlock the security system long enough to get to exams on time and pretty much flunked me a semester or make me take a day off from work. Dad thought it built character - I only built student debt.

      In 1997, eBay existed, but it was nothing like it is today. In 1997, if you wanted a used car, and couldn’t afford what dealers were charging, the only way was either random cars with for sale signs parked along the road, or the good old fashion classified ads in the local newspaper. You could get deals like that because sellers had a restricted buyers market. If it didn’t sell local, it didn’t sell, plain and simple. That’s how you’d end up with stories of people getting a sweet deal on a low mileage car from some old lady who only drove it to church on sundays.

    I too have wondered how the OHC 6 would have evolved over time, but also the turbocharged 301 V8 in the '80 and '81 Trans Am, the last all-Pontiac performance engine. Using the Buick turbo V6's progression as a guide, EFI, an intercooler and other upgrades could have easily turned the Trans Am and Firebird Formula into 300+ hp Corvette shredders...which of course would have gotten it cancelled the nanosecond Chevrolet brass threw a tantrum in front of GM corporate...

From Pontiac you had the Banshee Concept, the third generation Firebird Trans-Am, the Fiero, and the two captive Holdens the GTO and the G8. From Buick you had the Wildcat, the GSX and the Grand National GNX. From Oldsmobile you had the Aurora. From GMC it was the Syclone and the Typhoon. From within Chevrolet themselves you had the Chevelle SS and Nova SS get nuked. Had GM continued to develop this overhead straight 6 design, we very well could have has an American 2J engine in the later Pontiac Prix of the 1980's. Maybe a twin turbo edition would have ended up in the Buick Grand National. Growing up with a gearhead dad and always hearing "There's no replacement for displacement" I was attracted to big v8s all my life, but as I've gotten older I've started to appreciate tuner culture more and more. Making smaller blocks output the most power you can squeeze out of them is fascinating, and I'd like to think this old straight 6 design, if it has been fleshed out a little more, would genuinely have as much of a cult following as the 2JZ. My old man had a 66 Tempest hardtop back in the day, which he bought new for himself after settling in with his promotion at work. I have seen a couple old photos, but got more of a "picture" of it in how he would talk about that car; I think it's safe to say he really loved and appreciated his Pontiac and what it symbolized for him. With thanks to Mr Regular's review today, I got a sense of going back in time and seeing what it was like to take a ride in that car with him. The track footage gave me a hint of the excitement he must have felt when driving it, and recall the heartbreak as he lamented over the day he was broadsided in an accident that left him nearly dead and in the hospital with basically his entire left side broken and shattered. The car was obviously destroyed in the accident, and he eventually recovered from his injuries. I'm thankful he survived, and that we have the crash protection that we do today, but saddened by the fact that many of these and other cars of that era simply aren't around for today's generations to appreciate anymore. Nice review, thank you for this :)

    We do have an Ameri-Berra, the Atlas 4200, NIVLAC57 "LS Calvin" is in the Ohio area and is friends with Matt Happle and the Sloppy Mechanics crew. You should check him out and link up to check out some of his cars. Yes, I agree that the OHC Pontiac six should have been developed more, the Aussies could have at the least used it instead of using the Redtop I6 for so long and eventually using the RB30 when unleaded fuel became mandated, before eventually using the Buick 3.8, which is a nice engine but, no comparison to the Barra, the fuel crisis would have been the perfect time to resurrect this design since they were stuffing the 250ci I6 in everything, the main issue was the camshaft not having replaceable bearings making the heads nearly disposable, it would have been incredible if the 292ci six with a cross flow version of this OHC head would have been used in say...GMC trucks as the base work engine and then the Pontiac V8s could have been the big power option. An all aluminum version of the 250ci OHC six in Firebird, LeMans, Catalina in the 70s and 80s could have really been something especially if it got sentential multiport EFI live the Buick V6s got, boost could have been even better. This OHC six is certainly a better idea than the quirky Trophy 4, 194ci half of a 389ci V8, that it replaced spiritually. I would imagine a 292ci with this head that has been tricked out a bit with porting and a valve job, with a performance intake manifold, sniper EFI, with tuned length pipe tube headers that scavenge corresponding cylinders, wide band O2s, mean cam timing spec'd out by David Vizard and hooked to a 6 speed manual transmission would be an insanely powerful, interesting and unique resto mod/protouring build in a sea of V8s. It would be really cool if a company like Clifford had some OHC heads cast that fit GM I6s with modern cross flow, cam bearings, specially designed ports and valves that is belt driven just as this is, I think they could really sell if the labor.of love was given to them that is lavished on SBC, SBF, BBC, LS and so on engines. There are tons of the old sixes around and they're treated like scrap. Oh, well, a guy can dream.

      I second this recommendation. I'm actually surprised he hasn't met Calvin in passing, due to both of them knowing Sloppy crew. I guess being a state apart and Mr Regular probably knowing Justin more than Matt caused them not meet yet. But yeah, Mr R and Roman should make the trek out to see the Studebaker, he'd piss his pants at what Calvin has done with his turbo 4200.

  • @84gssteve
    @84gssteve Před rokem +3

    This one really resonated with me, as I had a choice to make when powering my 59 Studebaker Lark VI resto-mod.
    There just weren't any US made inline sixes that aren't agricultural in nature, and I didn't really want to go Euro, ala Mercedes/BMW.
    The Barra is just too damn big and isn't sold here, the Atlas 4.2 was a serious contender, but I was wary of its issues and also wanted a 5-speed without customizing.
    The RB is cool, but also not sold here and the exhaust is on the wrong side......that left just the 2JZ. It's pretty light, exhaust is on the correct side, it looks good and has tons of support and is easily junkyard available. Yes, it sounds wrong, and I get lots of weird looks but mostly positive reactions.....and it moves out, even just N/A and mostly stock.

    The time I became aware of the Delorean 6 was over 20 years ago at my speed mechanic's shop. A customer of his had this beautiful cherry condition 1968 Pontiac Firebird with the 6 cylinder in the classic sky blue Pontiac engine paint and the words "overhead cam" on the valve cover. Apparently that was the base engine for the 1st Gen F-Body for Pontiac. The engine was is great condition but the owner insisted on engine swap to a 350 Chevy smallblock for trouble free cruising and repair. I was amazed that GM had such a high tech engine in the '60s that seemingly very few knew about.

    I had one briefly not long after I finished high school, purchased for the grand sum of $800 in the mid-90s. It was a white hardtop with a 3-speed manual transmission. It was languishing for sale for months as in those days nobody wanted the “poverty row” grade transmission. It ran and drove well enough, and was surprised at how spirited the six cylinder engine was.
    It was without question one of the funnest cars I’ve ever owned (and I’ve surpassed the 400 mark for cars owned to date). It launched wonderfully, handled well and looked great. I was the butt of so many jokes in the muscle car crowd as the Pontiac’s potential was being constantly overlooked. I only had it a few months when I caught wind of one of my dream cars coming up for sale… a Garnet Red ‘66 442 that was 4-speed equipped.
    I advertised the car for sale for quite some time with no takers or interest. Eventually, I did sell the Pontiac for $3500 to an older gentleman who made me a cash offer upon seeing it parked outside of a bank we both happened to be running errands at.
    They sure as hell don’t make them like that anymore!
