    This is so timely. Yesterday I was sitting in a cafe and they were playing Daft Punk's "Get Lucky". I've been working on your Patreon chord tone exercises and this sounded like a really cool progression to jam to so I I took a quick look online: it's in B Dorian with the progression Bm7, D, F#m7, E. When I got home I made a quick loop and started soloing with notes from the Amaj scale starting on the B. As I started to explore this scale on different parts of the neck, I found myself swapping between B Dorian and Bm pentatonic. Then I started trying to hit chord tones at the appropriate times. An hour later I emerged from what was almost a guitar trance. It sounded .... so .... good.

  • @lancelotlink6545
    @lancelotlink6545 Před 3 lety +16

    Great explanation! I'd like to add another way of thinking about Dorian which really helped me a lot. I like to relate the modes to either the major or minor scales. So when I think Dorian I think minor scale BUT with a major 6th. That's just one note different and that simplifies it for my underdeveloped brain. But the main reason why I think this is useful is because I (like most people) like to play out of the minor pentatonic a lot. So all I need to do is figure out where that major 6th falls inside my pentatonic shapes and Bob's your uncle, I'm playing in the Dorian mode. I tend to think of chord tones to target too which you mentioned but sometimes I like to rock the pentatonic and just add a flavor note like the 6th to spice it up. Hope that's a helpful alternative way to wrap your head around modes in general.

    Thank you so much for explaining the modal system in the clearest most concise way I've ever seen it done by any guitar teacher!! I've spent years trying to get a proper handle on the Dorian mode and in the process I came to it from a different direction. I wrote a couple of instrumental guitar jam songs and soloed over the progressions using the chord tones of each chord to form arpeggios. In the key of D Dorian, I'd go up the ladder in the Dm chord tones, and down the ladder using the E major chord tones, often beginning on the sus4 tone of the E major to get the ball rolling. But that became boring, so I'd switch between the chord tones and the scale tones of the underlying chords in a two chord improv. I dunno if I'm making any sense here, but what I'm trying to say is that even though I have no formal music theory training and am entirely self-taught, right from my earliest beginnings as a guitarist, I still got to where your explanations on this video are leading. If I'd had this video for a reference back in 1973, think of all the time I coulda saved!!🙂
