Nice lesson. When I have an A minor or A minor 7 backing track I prefer the A Dorain sound ( A B C D E F# G, which is a second mode of G major scale). Most most jazz players go for this sound, like with "So What" by Miles Davis...
If I play A B C D E F G ("D Dorian", theoretically it's A Natural Minor when played over A minor track) then it has the sound "|A Nature Minor" (vi mode of G Major), and yes, it sounds like Santana because he likes it a lot, so it sounds Latin or even European. You can link and blend the two cases all you want. Add a little blues scale or basic minor pentatonic scale too and you are good to go.

Good take on this. I kind of knew all this, but you made it very adaptable. Of course you should always emphasize the root of the mode scale, and the passing notes that also emphasizes the mode.

I've been playing for 47 years......still don't get modes.
I understand that they're all located within scales.....but I don't get the whole 'Playing in the Dorian mode' thing.
When I play, I determine the key (scale), and then I play the notes in that key.........with a few non-scale notes to make things interesting.
I know where all of the notes are for each key........so I navigate among those notes.
To me, this seems like you're boxing yourself into one small area of a scale.
I appreciate all of the work you've done here........I watch these videos hoping I'll experience an "A-HA!!" moment someday.
