What a great video! Here it is, 4 years later and people are still commenting, asking questions, etc. It's still a *very* helpful comparison of 2 major Lumix entries in the m4/3 world. And you engage with the commenters, even now 4 years after the video was made.
Now for my G9/G95/G85 story. I wanted an addition to my em10 mk ii this last spring (Never selling the 10.2). G85 was my first choice, but they were scarce, and still pretty expensive vs the G95. The G9 was *expensive* and too heavy--i moved to m4/3 in 2016 for the light weight and the IBIS. The G95 had the 20mp sensor upgrade and the 4k burst mode, perfect for catching grand daughters when they accidentally flip on the water slide (nobody was hurt) a half second before I press the shutter. And it has a great viewfinder. It's a little heavy for my taste, but at $490 including the 12-60mm Lumix lens, I'd be crazy not to snap it up. Open box from one of the US's two biggest online photo stores with only 180 actuations and full manufacturer's warranty.
The only downside--the Lumix menu system. I'm used to the Olympus system, so the Lumix menus seem a bit confusing. I guess it's a matter of what you "grew up" with. 😊
Thanks again for all your help and instruction in your videos--gear, aesthetics, how to..., It's all good! Keep up the good work. Oh, and you change camera angles whenever you like!

If I were to choose, I'd go for G9. That thing is built like a tank, has comfortable hand-holding grip and has flasgship camera specs (1/8000sec mechanical shutter, 4K60, dual SD slots, etc). Also, the better IS is important to me!

I tend to agree. I am in the process of selling off my Canon gear and have bought the G9 and lenses. Next year it will probably become B camera to a GH-6 when that arrives, but I doubt the GH-6 will get the Best To Use crown from the G9. The GH-6 is likely to have fantastic video features, but the G9 goes beyond just features. It just feels right in the hand. Panasonic got it right with that camera.

I’ve used Canon, Nikon and Panasonic cameras pretty extensively and I have to say the G9 and my other LUMIX cameras have the best, most convenient controls of all. The playback and zoom on Canons is silly-press a button, press another button that zooms in too much, then use a wheel to adjust the magnification, with all those controls spread around the camera. With LUMIX you hit a button and scroll to your desired magnification. Canons also don’t let you adjust the exp. comp in certain situations until you half press the shutter. It’s always readily available on LUMIX cameras. Minor quibbles, normally, but when you’re shooting in fast-changing, tricky situation like a fashion show they make a difference. And for stills, the LUMIX DFD really is as good as Panasonic claims.

I have both and I find the G95 a much better handling camera. Comparing the two, the G9 's playback button is way over to the top left, and the G95's is placed almost in the perfect position
on the right just above the dial. The front dial on the G9 is a wheel dial that sits behind the shutter button and is not as easy to use. The front dial on the G95 is positioned around the shutter button and makes it simple to operate. The G9 has no flash and on many occasions, I have used the G95's built-in flash for fill-in lighting using a custom diffuser. And another bonus for the G95 is it has Live View Composite! The latest G95D has a higher-resolution OLED display compared to the G9's LCD.

    Hi Matti!
Thank you for this compact and factual comparison.
It is a pity that Panasonic is so reluctant with firmware updates. I think that it would not be a problem to offer the live composition mode in the G9 as well.
For me, an important difference between g9 and g90 is the number of autofocus points. 225 instead of 49 points makes it easier to set the focus point correctly.
Overall, the G9 is far from being an old model. It beats many newer competitors when it comes to image quality, features and especially ergonomics.

@@mattisulanto one thing I really liked about the G85 was the very useful manual focus magnification assistance, instead the whole screen, it magnifies on the focus point. Also the grip and the new live composite mode of the G95 has really got my attention in comparison to the E-M5. I feel the uphill battle that Olympus has against the a6400 and X-T30 is focusing, especially if they stick to contrast only with their E-M5. Panasonic has done a good job with DFD. I don't need 425 phase detection of the Fuji or Sony. Olympus has a good 121 phase detection system with their E-M1 but their development of their contrast system is less to be desired. Olympus has kept the E-M1 at a price I don't want to pay right now. I'm willing to wait for the G95 to go down to $1000 or see what comes out with the E-M5.

Hi Matti, thanks for the informative videos! I've narrowed my list down to these 2 cameras so I thought I would see if you might give me your opinion. Used I can get the G9 for US$770 with 12-60mm kit lens and g95/90 with 12-60mm lens for US$530. I was going to go with the g9 when the price difference was more like US$100, for the extra video features, no crop in 4k, better stabilization / AF. But, now with the larger price difference I am torn.
    Some considerations:
    - I primarily record motorcycle camping asmr trips alone (so size/weight is important for packing on moto) in 4k 24p/30p. 60p nice-to-have vs necessity
    - I don't intend to color grade much, will probably use Natural or Cine D on either camera, so 10-bit/vlog is a nice-to-have vs necessity
    - The 4k crop on the g95/90 is a concern - for wide angle: landscape, astro/night lapse; POV/Vlog; and closed in campsites where I can't compensate with moving the camera farther away. Is the crop really that bad?
    - with either camera I intend to get the laowa 7.5mm for wider shots, astro/night lapse. However, the US$240 savings on the g95/90 is almost the cost of this lens which is helpful.
What do you think in terms of cost benefit? Thanks!

Well, incredible that almost all reviewers omit an incredibly strong feature of G9: the advanced eye/face/body detection focus which comes with the better AF system.
Just one example: when shutting with G9 you can manually select which of the detected faces should be in focus. AFAIK G9 (and maybe S1 series) are currently the only cameras on the market which can do this thing! As this is a killer feature for me I simply don’t believe this was that unimportant thing as no reviewers would consider it worth mentioning. Pity.

Hey there, I've been watching your content for a few years now. I'm reconsidering my purchase I made about a year ago. I bought the Panasonic G95 to replace my Sony a6400. I miss the ease of use I had with my Sony. What do you think about wanting to switch back to Sony. I loved the autofocus it had. It was always locked on you and never hunted for focus. I only chose the G95 for photo and video and with that video that would run for hours without over heating. I never ran my Sony when I have it outdoors but want to record myself doing my work while I do carpentry jobs but I'm not sure how it would handle summer heat up here in Canada. I'm in real need of a professional opinion.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  Před 2 lety +1

You have to choose the camera that you like to use. Sony AF is the best and that's why it's really great for filming yourself. Just hit the record and do your thing in front of the camera and never worry about the focus. I have the A7C and so far never had any over heating problems, but it's not very hot where I live. However, in normal room temperature I can run it as long as the battery dies.

And I was wondering if, as a Lumix Ambassador, there is anyway you ask for us who bought the g95 for a firmware update of some sort .....autofocus is terrible and as someone post on dpreview almost 3 years ago :
It seems that Panasonic has forgotten that they make the G90. There have been numerous G9 etc firmware updates, but only one for the G90. My biggest gripe is that on the GH5 etc you can get a corrected EVF image from the V-LOG video option, which can be accessed in the menu. On the G90 it is just an empty space in the menu.
Then there is the lack of HDMI streaming, which is available on the G9, G100 etc.
Animal focus would also be a welcome addition. Panasonic G90 owners are being treated extremely poorly for their loyalty.

Also, while the G95/90 is not small, the G9 is huge - about the size and weight of a DSLR. Even though it clearly has superior specs, I recently bought and returned the G9 for this reason alone, knowing I would never want to carry it around with me. New sensor, body design from G9, v-log, unlimited record time ... G90 is more like a hybrid camera like the GH5 and not solely a stills camera like the G9. Photo wise it doesn't offer much more than the G80 (expect the new sensor and better af) but it is a much better video camera.
      G7→ G80: IBIS + weather sealing + battery grip
      G80 → G90: New sensor, unlimited record time, V-Log
In Europe every camera with a record time of 30min or higher (e.g. unlimited) is declared as a "video cameras" and therefore has higher taxes. That's also the reason why the G80/G85 have unlimited record time and the G81 (Germany, Switzerland, etc.) is capped at 29min 59sec. @@mattisulanto OK, that explains it then. My wife says that I have lead up my well anyway, this video was very helpful to Mr. I have been using the G7 for almost 7 years and wanted to upgrade. I wanted a camera with in-body stabilization at least some weather sealing and if possible a better sensor. I figured that i would probably have to go up to APS-c or full frame until I saw this. I appreciated the G9, G95 side by side comparisons. I chose the G95 and it arrived on Tuesday. I didn't want the recording limits, and I often take photos at night, and like the ability to watch my exposures progression. There were a few things I liked better about the G9, but the G95 seemed a better fit for me. I tried a few photos handheld with my 35mm prime that has no image stabilization, and found the sensor stabilization adequate for indoor existing light at ASA, err, I mean ISO 200. Showing my age lol. If I did any professional work, I would have gone with the G9. I have never had a catd failure, but Murphys law would cause a card failure as soon as I agreed to take cash for a photo shoot.
Thank you for the side by side and your other great videos, and your sense of humor.
