- In this video I take a look at Punched flights and demonstrate how simple it is to do. If you use nylon stems and regular folding flights I would highly recommend that you punch your flights

Been playing for two years and only just started using punched flight. Have not had one Robin Hood or flight come out of the stem in the past month used to get them all the time when grouping together. Awesome
Amen brother 👍🏼 have been a regular user of this method through the last 7/8 years though tip from my side: hole punches are designed with holding standard flights in place for the punch, it's trickier to align correctly for pear & kite flights 🙄
As a new player I have been wondering what punched flights are all about. Thank you.
Awesome! Glad I could help 👍
I was curious about a flight punch and this answered all my questions
I love this system, been using it for several years and IMHO I think this while being very simple is one of the best upgrades over recent years
There are no cons in my opinion. My shafts last so much longer with punched flights and slot lock rings. No more robin hoods and no flights falling of anymore. I love it!
I guess I had more Robin Hoods when i didn't punch my flights. With punched flights I very very rarely have one.
I've used punched flights for a long time with ti rings. You're totally right about the stem durability. With storm points on my darts and punched flights I've been using the same flights and stems for about 4 months now, playing about 3 hours/week.
How do you carry your darts to a game ?
Always informative keep em coming buddy.....dont forget BOOM
I've never tried these because I followed your example and switched to Cosmo super kite flights about three months ago. Flights are still in perfect condition, and no messing with broken rings, stems, flights, etc. Expensive, but worth it, and probably save money in the long run. Thanks for the tips and excellent videos, WD!
Cheers! As you know I use Cosmo myself and it avoids all these issues. As you said, costs a bit more but worth it imo.
I was going through stems like crazy for a while so I tried switching to cosmo and L style stems and flights. Didn't try the flight punch. But I love love loooooove the L style! Such a game changer. No robin hoods and the flights last forever. I found the cosmo to be a bit too stiff and cracked a few.
I didn’t have a clue. Been using plastic flights since I first joined a league way back when. Great information
Great vid, appreciated as a friend recommended me punching the flights and I had no idea what he was talking about!
Well that answers my previous question on another thread. Thanks man.
Noticed these on the tangent customs the last week, thought it was interesting, will have to find a punch and give this a go.
Thanks for the info👍🏼.
You're welcome Glen. You can check out Darts Corner as they have a huge selection... www.dartscorner.co.uk/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=flight+punch&osCsid=17797e9370590b2010ff1751caf0765b&x=0&y=0
Man says "I can't throw standard flights"... Said man goes on to throw a 180 while talking to a camera with minimal warm up. Show off!!! ;)
Magnetic board I say.
I was at A180 Darts at the weekend buying some new darts and the owner demonstrated the harrows version for me. They really did make the flight stay stuck on way tighter. I was quite shocked how well it worked. I'm using aluminium stems ATM so I'll leave buying one for now. He did talk me into so tapered things that go on my point though and they've really protected my flights. Nearly no marks in one week.
Another great video Mr Worldwide
Thanks Daniel! A180 is awesome. The owner there is one of the nicest people you could meet. I know there's a few people that still use aluminum stems but I find they bend way too easily. They also weigh quite a bit more than nylon stems. Also if you robinhood one it's practically ruined. Not to mention they cost an arm and a leg compared to nylon stems. Not a fan of those things at all.
@@WorldwideDarts they came on the new darts I bought there at the weekend and I've left them on. I've never actually bought them before. Hopefully they last a bit if they're expensive lol.
Really enjoy your channel! You remind me of the Jimmy Conners days in tennis, but with darts! Boom!
I've been using those for about 10 years love them using short progrip stem and I was going to say very nice 180 without your setup👍
Cheers Andy! 👍
Great info as always 👍
Loving the Irish shirt 😉 great video as usual!! Greetings from Ireland
Thanks Mark! 👍
Thanks man, that's the next thing on my list to get.
Picked up on your comment about Darts Corner Gallant darts. I bought some just a week ago, what a great quality dart, feels top quality and really good in hand
I bought a punch and didnt know how to use it. Thanks for the education.
Target titanium rings are the best I’ve found hands down. I’ll never go back to non punched flights. Love them.
I've only started playing a few months ago due to lockdown etc. I've never heard of punched flights but I like the look of it. I'll give it a go.
Like the Ireland shirt and shamrock cap too.
Keep the faith!
Cheers Paddy 🍀
Learned something new thanks
You’re really good and I like your videos.
Thank you 👍
Thank you for this video sir :)
You're welcome
I used punched flights for a long time until I switched to the Harrows Clic system. I throw for about an hour a day and in the year and a half I've used them I've changed two, count 'em, two flights and zero stems. Not sure I get any fewer deflections but the durability is epic.
What type of darts case do you use ?
@@geraldhills41 Unicorn 3d. Unfortunately, I'm not throwing as much as I was two years ago but I'm STILL on the same set of stems.
I was looking into one of these flight punches from mission, though just wondering, does it have to be the rings from Mission darts or can you use other rings from a different brand, e.g Harrows ?
Great video! Just getting started here.
What are the rings called that you put into the punched flights? Thanks in advance!
You are skilled!
Great video ! cheers mate
Thanks 👍
I'm quite new in the darts scene and I would wanna make my darts last longer, sorry for the noob question but is it advisable to punch my flights if I am using a non-nylon stem like say.. a steel stem? Thank you!
Nice one mate 👍 and good to see that lipstick taking a beating 😀
Good straight forward video. I've been curious about this. I'm pretty new to darts. Are there a lot of players that throw across their body like this?
I always use punched flights, other than the hassle of getting them on the stem I think they are worth it. If only for looks alone!
I use a flight protector and bang it on a glass chopping board to secure it more. Then take the protector off. It makes it easier to get them on tighter. I use standard cheap nylon stems and target titanium slot lock rings.
@@BartoniGaming Yea I don't use ane flight protectors. I do punch my flights however it does seem to prevent the stem from breaking as much. I always use the designa stems. Just can't beat um unless you are going for looks
@@shred_zed1 honestly try putting a flight protector on just to band them on, then remove it after. It works a treat
@@BartoniGaming I've used them before and the extra width on the flights killed me. That little extra on the back makes my 140's. 61's. I wont say I shoot 180s ever that's just me lying lol
@@shred_zed1 no your not understanding. Just use the flight protector to tap the flight on the stem then remove it.
I like the punched flights have been using punched flights a long time when I started playing for my local my hand used t shake so much if the flight came off I used t have t get someone t put dem on so used dem ever since do get a good few Robin hoods with dem alright but like u say stem hold you nice video 👍
Instead of using the metal ring you can now get them as rubber band. I normally use the 8 flights.
I use punched flights for like 1 or 2 years now, but sometimes I still manage to split my stems by throwing the dart in the middle of the ring 😂
100 micron flights are good as 150's shatter and spilt more often. Your barrel type and shape are sometimes the culprit
Nicelt presented video man thanks for this! I got some MVG design stems and they have little rings on them...so you're supposed to use them like this? I guess I could just take them off, or invest in one of those punches!
Cheers. Yep, definitely worth the $5 👍
Can you use punched flites on steel shafts? Or is it a plastic shaft only type of idea?
I’m a rare breed, I always used to robin hood my darts with punched flights. Since dropping the punching, I’ve been selected for my county, playing more consistent and feeling really good.... Darts is a weird game haha!
Is that a Welsh county? Glamorgan?
does doing this also keep the flights more evenly dispursed instead of crappily folded? my flights dont look like the shape they should be in the shaft
I switched to aluminium stems which has reduced my robin hoods. All a learning process. Tried punched flights but as they sit slightly lower in the stem i kept catching my finger. Good job there is a lot of variety for everyone.
Not sure if that's a good fix. Aluminum stems are heavy, bend easily, cost about 10x as much as nylon and overall just seem cheap to me. Like they're out of the 1990's or something.
@@WorldwideDarts ill keep experimenting. Its half the fun. Have tried robson flights but they seem heavy. Perhaps ill try slightly longer nylon stems and give the punch another go. Great videos btw.
@@stuartbraine9519 Cheers. In the end it comes down to what you prefer. Look at Gerwyn Price, he uses aluminum stems and he's number 3 in the world 👍
Big fan 👍
I've been using punched flights for ages.. But I switched to cosmo flights and stems.. Love those👍
Me too. New Cosmo flight video coming Friday 👍
@@WorldwideDarts I was using Cosmo fit air super kites and changed to W shaped and my game picked up emencly. If I happen to use nylon stems I always punch flights 👍 good video
I've had a huge problem with flights coming of. I need this
You can get 10 sets of free springs from darts corner with a minimum £40/$51.50usd purchase. These work great for me!
My Mission flight punch was in their free gifts section last month. I spent about $80usd and they threw it in for free 👍
Bear with me here... I haven't played darts much in the last nearly 30 years, and I am getting back into it. I had never heard of punching flights, so the video was super helpful. Does the weight of the ring (or rubber band someone else mentioned) make it feel much different when you are throwing?
No, you'll never notice it's on there. Also, what country are you in by the way? I ask because if you're in the USA there's a lot of things you're going to want to know BEFORE getting back into darts. Starting here... www.howtomasterdarts.com/2018/03/darts-retail-in-us-savvy-business-model.html?m=1
Thank you. I went with Robson flights and love them but I have a whole bag of flights not in use. I’ll get this setup and now will not need to purchase flights for a few years.
Thanks for this video mate.
I've started playing again (at home) after a few years and I've already lost flights behind the headboard and behind a chest of drawers......
Hole punch will be ordered asap :))
Subscribed.
P.S. quit showing off.... :p
😋
Great video when i robinhood the ring saves the flight and stems great video
You forgot another negative. Sometimes, when the flight does pop off, the ring also flies in its own direction, lost forever. The bad part about that is not the lost ring, but the fact you have to replace it, and competitive games, sometimes keeping that hand steady is impossible :)
the precious lost forever it was....
Tx, same here but just wondered if there was a punch designed for kite flights👍
Sooooo... now I have to add another product to my DartsCorner shopping basket.
Every time I make a purchase there I put a comment on my order and it reads.
“I loving using DartsCorner. I purchase at DartsCorner Because of the recommendation of World Wide Darts”
I always give you credit for my patronage there.
That's awesome! Thank you so much! Hopefully they'll keep the discount code (wwide8) around for a long time since they know I'm sending players their way. Cheers Michael! 👍
Does it matter how much micron the flights are for this?
Nice video, and u hit another 2x 180 u realy should go play in some tournament
pretty new to getting into darts but question, does this punch work with any shaft that comes with a ring? I have the harrow super grip shafts?
Yes, any nylon or carbon stem it should work. Metal no.
@@WorldwideDarts awesome thanks for the reply. Much appreciated
Nice info... Is that gallant m2?
We all love the info you give us on a lot of different things plz keep it up your awesome 😎
I'm new at this. Do the flight rings only work with nylon stems? Can they be used on aluminum shafts?
They are not needed with aluminum stems. But then again, I would really never recommend aluminum stems to anyone. Heavy, expensive and bend very easily if you get a few bounce outs.
Punched flights only for me. 👍
sometimes? i break stems like 2 or 3 every week and flights will get loose espes if you don't change the ring as soon as you robinhooded
I tried those types of stems a month ago (without having a punched flight) and had a Robin hood every other day so went back to aluminum stems as with those I would only get a Robin hood like twice a year. For me losing a scoring dart sometimes a couple times a game due to Robin hood's wasn't acceptable, does punching the flight and therefore having the ring further up the stem stop Robin hood's? I never seem to get them with aluminum flights I actually can't remember the last time I did
Aluminum? Got to be American? Imo punched flights are asking for robinhoods. I switched to Cosmo years ago and haven't had one since.
You pointed out my aluminum shafts and Pentathlon flights on Twitter the other day, and I'm thinking about switching to something that will hold up better. This looks like something I should try. Are nylon stems the best? Also, what about flight protectors?
I wasn't trying to be mean but here in the USA there is a VERY stereotypical dart that most players use. Knurl, aluminum stems and either Ruthless or Pentathlon flights. I honestly don't care what players use for equipment but my only complaint is how much that Americans get ripped off at US dart shops.
You said you use Bottelsen darts. There is absolutely no way that a very basic knurled dart should cost over $30usd. The main purpose of this channel is to show everyone, especially Americans, that incredible darts are actually extremely affordable. We've been getting ripped of for decades here in the states. I would highly recommend you read this article if you get the chance... www.howtomasterdarts.com/2018/03/darts-retail-in-us-savvy-business-model.html?m=1
Also notice my recent video on the DC Gallant darts. Less than $20usd. Anyway... the problem with aluminum stems is that they bend very easily. They also cost quite a bit and if you robinhood them they're toast. I would recommend you give this video a watch... czcams.com/video/HxP8YbovXxU/video.html
I would also highly recommend punching the flights as seen in this video. The stems will last 10x as long. And instead of flight protectors you should try to eliminate the lip where the point meets the barrel. Eliminate that lip and your flights will last 20x as long and you'll experience less deflections as well. To eliminate the lip get yourself some Trident 180 nose cones or specialty points like a Winmau Freeflo point or a Target Storm point 👍
@@WorldwideDarts No offense taken. I started playing again a year and a half ago after more than 20 years away from the game and just went with what I had used before. Really appreciate your advice!
@@DartsForOldFarts You're welcome. The two biggest changes in the past 20 years are the boards and the price of darts. You know how it was in the 90's. We'd spend a good chunk of our paycheck to get some movable point darts lol.
Nowadays we can get amazing darts for less than $20usd from Darts Corner and the shipping is about $5. Just right now I placed an order for 8 sets of darts plus a ton of other stuff. I'm getting it expressed shipped to my house overnight and it cost me $168!! They practically give things away at Darts Corner. 👍
@@WorldwideDarts I was actually a reseller in the early 80's and I think the wholesale price for my Hammerhead's was still around $90. I went into Bullseye Darts in Philly when I started playing again looking to pay $150 for a set of Target darts, but the owner talked me into buying Bottleson's for less than half that price. Next time I'm shopping for darts I'll definitely look at Darts Corner!
I'm trying to figure out what the metal ring is for my darts. Anyone can help.
have you ever seen the Winmau Whizlock system? similar, if not exactly like the L-style shell lock. ive been using Winmaus version for a few years and find it great. no way to robin hood and stems last forever.
Yeah, decent system for sure. Anything that prevents robinhoods gets a 👍🏻 from me
Off topic: i know i can use trident180 to reduce damage on flights, but if i buy those points with trident built in, would it exactly fit on any darts. I have concern that the nose of the barrel has a bigger width or smaller width. Thanks
Points like the Winmau Freeflo, Target Storm, or even the new Harrows should work on most any darts. What darts would you be installing them on?
@@WorldwideDarts Planning on getting Harrows Vice. For points, its either keep the point + trident180, or what you recommend. As long as its affordable 😆
I just looked them up on Darts Corner. About $30 after the discount code (wwide8). I would opted for the Tridents or maybe even go with the new Smooth Harrows Apex points... www.dartscorner.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=2746_2790&products_id=54214
Good idea. I pull those rings off immediately and use a dab of superglue.
Thank you I really need that like if you need punched flight
edit:thank you for 2k likes
I have carbon Shafts. Is it possible to punch the flights too? Because I can't get the ring over... :(
Yes, it should work. I use the Harrows carbon stems and there should be no issue at all.
I'm new'ish to darts, I broke a lot of stems, I ordered a punch and a year's supply of replacement stems about 3 months ago... I haven't broken a stem since I started punching flights... My year's supply is now 10+ (I've had fewer Robin hood's since the flight tines won't open so easy)
More bounce outs though since the incoming flight bounces off the bedded darts... 🙄
Have you ever been traveld to Germany Bro?
I have not.
Ti rings are a must with punched flights!.. short money and they don’t blow up on Robin Hood’s.. that being said.. those 180s look a lot nicer with standard flights.. also proven that standard shape flights reduce shoulder injuries 🤔... go Celtics!!!
Nice 180 bro
Hey, I'm quite new to the hobby, and wondered why people do that... I just use my stems and flight, and sometimes indeed annoying when flights fly arouns... maybe you could revieuw L-style to? And if it's worth the money. My grouping isn't that good....
There's a lot of people that like the L-Style stems and flights. I would highly recommend that you stay away from spinning stems though. Nothing but a gimmick. They will NOT make you a better player.
With the snugg fit on the flights to the stems won't deflections be more of an issue
I've heard mixed reports. But all in all I'd say that most are in favor of them by a long ways
The one negative is actually not a negative. Because if you didn't have a ring squeezing the prongs, those prongs would be spread out and be much more prone to be caught by an incoming dart.
i did robin hood the ring once ..works great flights never pop off :)
Are l styles flights really worth it when you can buy 20 sets of on sale flights and 10 sets of designa stems and just punch them for the same price
Depends I suppose. If I could use standard sized flights I'd probably just use normal flights.
will you do a video on molded flights?
I just did yesterday. You miss it?
Can you tell me what makes punched darts any more secure than using unpunched darts with a lock ring, please?
It's night and day difference. Just something you have to try. The flights absolutely will not come off if punched. It's almost like they're glued on!
@@WorldwideDarts Thank you for your reply! Do the punches work with kite-shaped flights?
Yeah, I've punched some weird shaped flights like the Taylor Vision Edge. It will work with Kite's but just be careful lining them up before punching.
I can't believe I've never heard of those
I always use the springs rather than the thinner rings. They can break like tissue lol.
That's what I do
fully agree
Which do u rather springs or d single ring
I prefer to use Cosmo as it eliminates 100% of robinhoods for me
Thanks for the info. Can i punch any flights?
You should be able to, yes.
What about bounceouts? Dont these flights block grouping more often?
Personally I'm not a fan of them. I tried them for a bit and got a ridiculous amount of robin hoods. I didn't get many bounce outs or deflections but the robinhoods were insane!
@@WorldwideDarts so you have changed your mind 🤭
For me there is one major con to this... they click when you shake the darts. The rings make noise and I am constantly trying to tighten shafts and checking soft tips. Quite annoying! the are tight when using brand new shafts only.
I think having an incoming darts flight easily pop off will deflect it less than if it was secured
Would anyone agree when using punched flights the next size up of stem is needed as punched flights are maybe 4 or 5 mil further into stem 🤷♂️
Punching a flight does not make it fit "further" into the stem. If you had experience with punching a flight you would understand how it works. What were you thinking?
@@ericzeigler8669 I think your a bell end I know more about darts than you'll ever know now go away you troll
@@thescull3479 Too bad your handle wasn't "the brain." What's a "bell end?" I'm 62 and played my first professional tournament in 1982 at the Royal Hawaiian International Darts Tournament. @@ericzeigler8669 why immediately play the “you’re an idiot” card. A little kindness and understanding goes a long way.
Nice 180 sir
Does anyone make a specific punch for kite flights?
Not that I know of but if you're careful you can do it with a regular punch. I've done it with kites
I think there is one more con i use them but my flights do break more than without them but other than that i think trehe great
Sounds like you need some Trident 180's
For today I'm using my Cosmo carbon stem with my super kite setup..... Wait.....
Oh you can robin hood a cosmo flight system... I’ve now done it twice. Figure it must be the way I throw because I’ve shown the flights with holes in the middle part of them to other people and they all say they’ve never seen that before
I think I've seen two pictures of Cosmo robinhoods. I wonder if that issue is going to be fixed with the new Cosmo Fit Flight Pro that I'll be reviewing Friday.
Hopefully they fix the issue of the flights tearing from the bottom up. I switched to cosmos about a month and a half ago and I’ve ripped 16 flights from the bottom up and robin hooded 2... I would switch back but I’m throwing too good with the back weight to switch back
been doing this for many years.
Only for nylon shafts?
Yes.
Hey wwd , i was watching your video of your top 5 darts , and you were talking about the lighter variants of the priestleys , www.sonnysdarts.nl still sells them! Only thing is its a dutch website... it might help you or another dartfanatic 👌👍
