Stopping till the point of stillness, requires at least 50% not doing. It's when you realize that nothing is really happening and you can relax and build strength for when you need it. Such a wise choice, going to India. At such a young age to make that decision. That's probably why she can still make a decent living through live performances. She's taking care of herself. Right on!

I really think the magic of this album is that you're listening to a young woman that has fully accepted her thoughts, emotions, and most importantly herself. To accept your emotions whether good or bad is a realization saved for middle age adults. It's quite fascinating to see someone put down in lyrics this life transition. For one to accept their faults, insecurities, perception of self is really rare. It's a very open and honest album and it's one of the reasons it was so successful. Most people can spot fakeness. Alanis is not fake.

This song is about her journey into Enlightnement. Getting past all the negative emotions...terror, frailty, dillusionment, elusive praise (kudo's) and the fear of death... and finding the "clarity" and "silence" that comes through meditation (Thank you India) that allows one to fully appreciate the here and now (how 'bout me enjoying the moment for once), which leads to finding the Divine Love we all have inside of us (How 'bout remembering your Divinity) and being overwhelmed by its beauty (How 'bout unabashedly bawling your eyes out) and finally seeing life (Thank You Providence) in a way you never imagined before (as in the "All seeing eye of Providence"... on the back of a ONE dollar bill!).
The BIG clue is in the "Bridge" of the song,
"The moment I let go of it" (negative emotions) "Was the moment I got more than I could handle" (Enlightenment, and the overwhelming experience that comes with it) "The moment I jumped off of it" (A leap of faith) "Was the moment I touched down." (Finding her True self). She draws special attention to this passage in her video as well because she stops signing the words.
She wrote this song because everyone that has expereinced this (Enlightenment) wants to share it with others so that they will find their own path to Enlightenment, too.

  • @michaelccozens

I can't speak to Alanis's childhood, but I do know she was involved in show biz from a young age and had a teenage dance-pop kinda album that didn't do well. I can't imagine either experience would've helped with the insane success of JLP, which itself is quite an expression of rage and cynicism and, to some degree, depression (brutal breakup behind all that, too). That sort of thing can really mess a young person up, as we've seen much too often.
That she managed to find what appears to be at least some healthy serenity and peace, that then enabled her further tremendous artistic development, is all too rare of an occurrence, and one I think we're all glad she achieved, whether you're a fan of her work or not.

It was a dancey type song, before she really came into her own and found her signature sound. Way different than what you have seen so far. She became her true artist self when she released Jagged Little Pill in my opinion.

A few years ago I was going through a pretty rough period in my personal life. I heard this song and just lost it. I ended up listening to it on repeat and crying my eyes out. It has deeply spiritual meaning to me, as I’m sure it does for Alanis. I’ve really found a new appreciation for her as an artist and a human.

Facts! Alanis wrote this song after spending 1 1/2 years in India. After she blew up here in the states she was really overwhelmed with the fame, feelings of loss, how the business treated her, how she was disillusioned with what fame brought her and stuff so she took a sabbatical. Because of this she wrote this to thank India for the experience that put her career life back onto a more focused track. She's also thanking the feelings and experiences she was dealing with. For without them she would not have grown as a person. It's an awesome song.
Btw. She used to be a pop singer in Canada before changing genres and then blowing up worldwide.

Alanis Morissette spent well over a year touring and promoting her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill, which burned her out physically and emotionally. For the next year and a half, she took a lot of time off to decompress and re-evaluate. "Thank U" is her reaction to the conflicted feelings she had after achieving success.
In her VH1 Storytellers appearance, she explained: "I felt that I lived in a culture that told me that I had to consistently and constantly look outside myself to feel this elusive bliss. And I achieved a lot of what society had told me to achieve and I still didn't feel peaceful. I started questioning everything, and I realized that actually everything was an illusion and it was scary for me because everything I had believed in was dissolving in front of me and there was a death of sorts, a really beautiful one ultimately, but at first a very scary one, and so I stopped. I stopped for the first time and I was overcome with a huge sense of compassion for myself first, and then naturally that translated into my feeling and compassion for everyone around me and a huge amount of gratitude that I had never felt before to this extent. And that's why I had to write this song, 'Thank U,' because I had to express how exciting this was and how scary it was and all of these opportunities for us to define who we are."
Disillusionment, frailty and silence are among the things and feelings Morissette thanks in this song, but at the top of her list is India, where she spent time in 1997. The trip was enlightening and gave her some of the ideas for this song.
The video shows Alanis singing naked in the middle of an empty city street. Her hair covers her breasts and her crotch was digitally obscured to keep it family friendly. A city block had to be shut down to shoot the video. She recalled to Q magazine in 1999: "We were on the streets of downtown LA two nights in a row. It was pretty cold. We had to use a little bit of latex so I wouldn't get arrested because apparently if you're fully naked on the street anywhere in America... jail. Some people would go by and stop, but it was three or four in the morning, so it was quiet. I wanted to express where the song came from which was to be really empowered by being vulnerable and not being apologetic."

This song is about transcendental meditation as practiced in Buddhism. She is thanking all she has learned from the practice of TM. Living in the moment, letting go, the clarity she has found, the belief that "everything is nothing and nothing is everything", and silence. She is thanking disillusionment because living a life of illusion is not reality. And all of these practices were "founded", if you will, in India. Brilliant song.

Brad, you nailed it. I lived in India for a few years and studied yoga and meditation. Where I was taught, an ashram ,that focused on losing your ego as Alanis demonstrates in the video. No makeup,no cloths and no ego. Alanis reserved the whole compound where I stayed, for her and friends who came with her. India is a county you need to experience by living in it and not read about it. By the time I arrived Alanis had left the ashram. It was kind of cool to know that she had stayed there.
