John Day River Smallmouth SMACKDOWN

- It's summertime, and that means the smallmouth are out in force in central Oregon. I headed out with my friends Tracy and Terry, with the mission of getting on a ton of aggressive warmwater fish. While it was a relatively modest day for that area, we still all had 20-30 fish each, and hooked into countless more.

So many beautiful fish dude!
Slayed em!! Nice work!
Great video man!! I’ve only ever fished Walleye up there, looks like a trip needs to get planes:)
Thanks for sharing! Tight Lines!
Another nice video. I started using the Ned jigheads with the wire weedguards all the time. They work well at helping the Ned to be rockless as well (if you are losing setups in the rocks like I had been).
Love smallies! 👍🏼
Found your channel through Instagram. Great content! Happy to support! 🤙🏾👍🏾🎣💯
Nice river, looks like tons of fish. Need to visit
Awesome video, where I can fish there are many beautiful fish enjoyed,
fishing was very good! 🎣😉❤️🐟
Way to lay the SMACKDOWN my friend. Smallmouth are a fun and feisty fish to catch.
Man that fishery is loaded even if they aren't huge. You ever try a 3-4" grub on a little ball jighead in places like that? A good simple moving bait that could be killer on those fish if they're active. I use Kalin's grubs, great action.
I used some really small like...panfish grubs last year and had some success but a lot of snags. A small curly tail old school style would probably slay there.
@@JoelFishes That Kalin's grub in color "witches brew" is one that will definitely provide a fun day of smallie fishing... not sure why, but that color seems to call in the bigger fish.
@@rodfather_bass_fishing I really traditionally avoid grubs even though I know logically I should be throwing them in situations like these.
Nice video. I miss fishing at John Day, haven't made a trip out there this year yet. We only caught tiny ones there.
That's pretty normal during the summer - the big ones are really hard to find, and the smaller ones get really aggressive.
In all seriousness I’m super jealous of this river man. I’ve never had a day on the water this good. Fly me out and let me fish it.
I love the John day river. Go a few times every year. Best bass fishing river ever. Best I ever did was 340 bass in 3 days
Is there any good fishing at the mouth of the river where it hits the columbia??
Great video! Any recommendations where to launch a kayak and fish smallies at on the JD? Looking for calm water and a day trip/float.
Either going upriver from Le Page, or launch at Service Creek or Clarno.
@@JoelFishes thank you
Cool video and channel buddy...left ya a sub...have a great weekend!
“SlOw DoWn WiTh YoUr NeD fIsHiNg BiLl” (proceeds to ferociously fish ned rigs) 😂
That’s just a ridiculous amount of Smallmouth man... not gonna lie you got some serious skills brother
Do you still have your Pond Prowler? I picked up one of the last ones they made before the company tanked. No warranty but I am not too worried. Seems like you got your money's worth from all the videos you did with it. When are you going to do another video?
💪😎👍
Hey man great video. I sub’d. I live in Bend. Where is this spot you were at?
JD south of Cottonwood Canyon
Thanks
Hey man why did you quit making videos ??
At 4:00 you can see the fish hit the bait. Or as you say, smoked it!!
Just dropped a sub! Do you no longer make videos?
man i wish the john day had bigger fish. i just went myself 2 weeks ago itll be awhile before i post that vid however
There are lots...they're just impossible to find in the summer cause the little ones are so aggressive
I don't have a lot of experience up there, but a friend of mine caught close to 200 in one day on tubing trip years ago. Biggest one was less than 2 lbs. I think.
Still a fun day though...
I've caught rainbows, carp and suckers as long as my arm just a few miles downstream from john day and dayville.. but theres a hatchery somewhere around there so that makes sense
Dude what happened to you?? You gave us all these great videos and then nothing all the sudden.
Hey man, thanks for inquiring. Life got very busy and I had long stretches of being unable to fish last year from mid-summer on. I've actually got some footage and stuff ready for a 'comeback' but then covid happened and things have come to a bit of a half. Hoping to get back in the same in 2020 though.
@@JoelFishes Hell yeah man. Glad you're not sick of us yet haha. Looking forward to it.
No one is gonna see this comment, but I fished the John day last summer and caught 30+ fish in a day and nothing was below a pound and my uncle caught a 4 pounder
They were all on fly rods and topwater
If you get to the JD before the summer dink takeover, there's plenty of bigger fish to be had. In the summer, they go into hiding a lot more and the little ones get really aggressive
@@JoelFishes We fish it every year in June and I personally have hooked 3 fish that were all in the 4 pound range, it's not that it's impossible to catch them you just have to get away from people and be will to fish for a couple day
*willing to fish for a couple days
Boring
