Really nice to find an english tutorial working with cm's
KatieCarlinHudson I work in mostly cms since I’m Aussie ^_^ I’m glad you liked it ^_^
omg yes! so true
@@KirileeCosplay same😁
Also i have a tape measure with cm and inches so it isn’t a problem, but it is useful
I love that people have started making apps to calculate dificult math equations you need to make these. Im absolute trash at math, and those sites help me out so much when making/sewing dresses. Thank you so so much for showing me how to do this! I have a ball coming up this march, im in super excited sbout it. Its my first ball, and ive always dreamt of attending one. Your videos make me glow. THANK YOU!!❤❤❤
I am so glad I could help it make sense! Good luck with your outfit!
Thank you for this easy tutorial. I'm thinking of making a 1850s day/walking skirt.
Oh how wonderful!
I’m glad this could help!
My mum made a dress for me based of of the dresses from Hamilton the musical but I don't have a "cage under it, so this really helps make the cage.
This will look really good with my Lolita
Easiest crinoline tutorial. I'll be attempting this for my Cinderella gown
Brentt Bumatay thank you so much and good luck with your cosplay!
The best tutorial of this kind of topic so far! ^^
Just one question: What kind of math did you use to know how long each hoop needed to be?
Thanks so much!
You can figure out the placement and then either:
1. Measure out from the center how far out you want that point to me (similar to what you do in the first step down the bottom)
or
2. Get the hoop metal and wrap it around the area until you get a size you are happy with and cut then.
In both cases, I would say cut a bit more off than you need to start off with.
I work as a Historical Interpreter (like a Reenactor, but I work in Trades such as Tinsmithing, Blacksmithing, and Pottery) and have needed a Crinoline for a long time for my historical costume.
Thank you for making such a simple and straightforward tutorial, so that everything isn't too overwhelming.
I really appreciate it. 🥰
I am so glad that this will be able to help you. Good luck with your costume!
This is just what I need to make a skirt base for my Dalek dress. Thanks for the informative and easy-to-follow tutorial. Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure! I’m glad it could help!
The easier and still best explained tutorial I've seen! It doesn't seem like too difficult anymore, sure it is time consuming and a hard work. And since I don't have a sewing machine, I'm gonna try to make mine by hand! Wish me good luck... Thanks!
Good luck!
EDIT: I made the crinoline a while ago but I finally bought my wedding dress and wanted to say, I'm so happy I followed this turorial because it really completes the look!
Okay so 2 weeks after seeing this video, I'm finally actually making the project. I'm much taller and I'm making this for a wedding dress so my crinoline must be a lot bigger. I just took the measurements used, found the percentage of each jump in size and used the measurement of the base of my crinoline to then figure out the measurements needed for the rest of my boning pieces. This is just a tip to anyone whos using this tutorial but is using different measurement than in the video! The biggest hoop you need is just decided by you and how big you want the crinoline to be, then the second I just decreased by 20% of the 1st hood, the 3rd was decreased by 15% of the 2nd hoop, 4th was also decreased by 15% of the 3rd hoop, the 5th was decreased by 10% of the 4th hoop and the 6th was decreased by 5% of the 5th hoop.
If you need more explanation, I'll use my numbers. So the biggest hoop for mine is 125 inches. I figure out 20% of 125, which is 25. So I took the measurement of the 1st hoop (125 inches) and decreased it by 20%. 125 - 25 = 100. So the 2nd hoop is 100 inches.
next we find 15% of 100, which is 15, so 100 - 15 = 85. 3rd hoop is 85 inches.
for the 4th hoop, we find 15% of 85; 12.75. 85 - 12.75= 72.25. 4th hoop is 72.25 inches
5th hoop. 10% of 72.25 = 7.22. 72.25 - 7.22 = 65.03 inches 5th hoop is 65.03 inches
last hoop would be 5% of 65.03 which is 3.25. 65.03 - 3.25 = 61.78. 6th hoop is 61.78
I'd round the numbers to 125", 100", 85", 70", 65", 60". If I instead made this more confusing, disregard it and continue as you were lol
The maths looks good. I recommend you do a little mock up as I did to make sure you are happy with the shape :)
Well done, this is such a great basic crinoline tutorial! Very clear to understand and follow. Thank you so much for making it! 🖤🖤🖤
Thank you so much- I’m glad it could help!
Awww I’m so greatful for this easy tutorial, I always was a bit scared of that project but now I’m quite confident that I can do it, thank you 😍
I'm so glad! You can do it!
I got this Halloween costume when I got it the picture the skirt looked fluffy it wasn’t I’m planning to make this so it might puff up
Cool! If you use it, please share a photo of it completed ^_^ Id love to see how it turned out
This video is so beautifully done and im so thankful that you made such a lovely and clear video!!
Thank you very much for your lovely response :)
Brilliant tutorial.
I hope you continue to show what you can do with it, I'd love to see what vintage inspired skirts & dresses you could make for that shape.
I am actually making an Ariel cosplay with it and will be posting a video once it is completed as a bit of a construction blog - like I did with my Christine Daae dress which is available on my channel.
I was searching desperately for a video to make this and i finally found your video i made it and i am so proud and happy of myself thank you for this simple method
Glad I could help!
Love your explanation! Straight to the point and precise .... love it

Your tutorials are phenomenon!!!

Brilliant! Fabulous!!! Thank you so much for this !!! I tried to make a crinoline for my daughter a few years ago, it was such a disaster!! With this video, I have to confidence to try again!!

This is the best hoop skirt ever taught,,, thank you so much maam 😄
Gaur K my pleasure! I’m glad it could help
Can we use this tutorial for any length of the crinoline? For example I really want to make it knee high length or would it just be better to get a petticoat?
Holly Flack if you wanted to, absolutely you could amend this to knee length with only one or two hoops. I’ve done a short hoopskirt with a petticoat over the top for quite a few projects
Love them all
Thanks!
Thank you for this video ❤
You’re welcome
I was watching this before making one all ready to do some math and then discovered we’re the same height and I can steal your math, what a great twist!
Hahaha! Great twist! No need to reinvent the wheel! YAY!
i just checked and i'm roughly the same height too!
Yay!
@@KirileeCosplay how about if i'm wider than you? if i make one now and then hopefully lose weight, do i need to make a new one or just adjust the width on the waist band?
That’s why elastic is a great waistband. But yeh- you just amend the waist
Spotlight is awesome 😎
BoredSasha it is indeed!
You know what? That’s it.
I’m gonna subscribe.
Hahaha! Thank you!
Kirilee Cosplay 😂
What a lovely tutorial!!! So easy to follow 😍 could you maybe do a tutorial on how to make a crinoline for a pannier? I've been trying to find one that's for beginners but they are all super advanced 😅😢
When I need to make one for a cosplay, I shall keep it in mind :?

Thankyou so much for this tutorial I had an old dress that I wanted to make bigger and shopping for this online where I live they are quiet expensive .

*takes notes since I am working on making my own crinoline later today*
Excellent! Have fun!
Thank you for this tutorial;;; it’s so easy to understand;;; I might be able to pass my HSC...
My pleasure - but you'll have to enlighten me - what has making a crinoline have to do with passing your HSC?

Great tutorial! How do you just get given fabric from spotlight??!
Alicia Estelle thank you. Spotlight were kind enough to sponsor the fabric for this cosplay after developing a bit of a business relationship.
this is so cool! i have some really long cable ties so im gonna tr make this with duble layered cable ties... if it doesnt work it doesnt work. thanks for the tutorial, its really easy to understand :)
I wouldn't recommend it but give it a try!
@@KirileeCosplay update, it did work! i used triple thickness on the bottom hoop and double thickness on all the others and it holds its shape really well! thanks heaps for the tutorial :)
Good advice😍👑🌟
Glad you think so!
Thank you for such a clear tutorial
. Do you think it would it be possible to create a crinoline for a high low skirt?
I'm start Anna's dress from the beginning of frozen two and am trying to figure out how to get the shape to hold.
I don’t see why not ^_^

Realmente está.muy claro el vídeo, pero agradecería tuviera subtitulos en español. Gracias
I’m sorry but I do not speak or write Spanish. If someone would like to translate I would be happy to upload them
HI!Thank you so much for your tutorials, I have a question, how can I make the bell hoop skirt, like the one with violet tape that it is visible in this video for a second?:)
The one with the violet tape was the mock up for the one that I made up in this video. The measurements are the same
Great tutorial! How many meters of boning did you end up using?
SuperMrsMar I’m not 100% off hand but I think about 7-8 meters
This is gonna be very helpful when I make a crinoline for myself for a shorter dress. Do you have any advice on making a short crinoline?
Remove some hoops and make the straps shorter
Gostei!
obrigada!
You are a good send
Thank you ^_^
So i need a bigger hoop skirt for a peach cosplay. what do i change to make it bigger?
Just the sizes of the hoops.
For each hoop did you add a 3-5 cm allowance to the length of did you just overlap the hoop 3-5 cm?
I did it by eye during the testing phase
Medam where can I find metal beedingon olline at 4.25 seconds in the video . Please give me the answer
I got mine off Etsy :)
where to buy steel boning? can i replace it with anything else? i cant find it anywhere in my country
Aliexpress
Can we sit with this type of petticoat?
Absolutely. I've sat in mine without any kind of issue. You can gather up the hoops and have them rest on the back of the seat.
Is it possible to use rigilene boning and still get the same effect?
Good question. The answer is no. Rigilene is not strong enough I’m afraid. Neither is normal plastic boning.
Super👌👌👏👏👏👏💛💛💜
Thanks!
Hello (: Just wanted to say your videos are super informative. I'm actually making a short petticoat based on your tutorial for a cosplay! I also have a quick question for you. Is your tailors chalk the refillable kind? If so where did you get it or what brand is it?
Thank you so much! If you have photos, I would love to see! Tailor’s chalk comes in lots of different kinds- it doesn’t really matter as long as it can rub off :)
@@KirileeCosplay Absolutely! I'm between chalks right now. Sometimes I'll use art charcoal and sometimes I'll use crayola colored chalks, the kind for an old fashioned chalk board. Yours looked really unique so I was just wondering (:
Instead of using boning (which is hard for me to find) what could I use as a substitute?
I can’t recommend anything as I’ve not used anything else
Wowwwwwwwwww soooooooo amazinggggggggggg❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍👌👌👌👌👌👌
Thanks so much!
Hey there... I liked and have subscribed as well... Please tell me one thing... May I skip the top most hoop to make sitting easier???
You can indeed. But I don’t really have a problem sitting with it because I just move the hoops up. But saying that, your way might be more comfortable for you :)
@@KirileeCosplay comfortable to sit in a Chair too???
If yes, Kindly make a video on how to do that... I really wanna know
You just don’t do the top hoop :)
Where can I get the flat steel boning? It’s my first time making one aha 😅
Have a look at cheap petticoats on eBay or amazon etc
To make the skirt have a more poofy shape would you just make the top hoops bigger?
Yes
Thank you so much for the simple tutorial! Can you tell me exactly how many meters of boning have you used in total?
I don’t know. I know my roll was 10m and I didn’t use all of it
@@KirileeCosplay Thank you so so much!
Sorry if I bother you another time! Can you tell me if the boning is 10 mm or 5mm?
10mm
I want to make this in all white and wear the naked frame with my medieval ankle pants and modern blazer.
Do the thing!
merci !
La Chauve my pleasure :)
How much weight can this carry? Because I looking for a light skirt to create a base for my playing card dress???
So far I've had dresses of a couple of kilos on it without any kind of issue. Just remember to use metal hoops.
Please add your description link. We need it. What are the items need..
Thank you for your feedback. I have also included close captions that list the information during the video
What do you call the hard thing you inserted that made it like hoop?
Steel hoops or steel boning or flat metal boning
Hi, do you have to use steel boning for this, or will plastic boning do just fine? I want to make sure it'll still have the same amount of bounce and movement
Plastic boning will not hold as well
Ohh, okay! I have one more probably silly question! Does it matter how wide the boning is?
Is there something we can replace the boning with? its my first time making one of these and I don't need It to be too durably as its for cosplay. so would something like cardboard work? I just don't want to go spending money on something that could be replaced by something I already have
Sadly cardboard won’t work- however flexible rubber tubbing with some rigidity to it would work if you are making a budget version
I see that a lot of people use zip ties for boning in corset . Maybe it can be used for this if you glue them together
I used to know someone who made the hoops out of old metal hangers so that might work for you
Can i use 6mm or 10mm flat steel boning?
Yes
How do you tape the tip of the flat steel boning to match together?
I suggest electrical tape
@@KirileeCosplay wow thank you!! Should I go for an electric shop for that?
Excellent
Thanks
@@KirileeCosplay how to prepare at home hoop skirts with out purchase any material
I don’t understand the question
@@KirileeCosplay u use some plastic wire iam asking replace any material at home ingredients
You can try!
Is there anything thicker or more sturdier than the flat steel boning that comes in regular hoop skirts?
I’m not sure plastic boning would hold its shape
@@KirileeCosplay No, it's not plastic it's metal of some sort but under the weight of my dress it's flattening out weighing it down.?? Ughhh
I used thick copper wire from Lowe’s
@@hannahfeeney9910 thank you
Hello ! Instead of flat steel boning can we use plastic boning, rigilene ?
I would not recommend it
@@KirileeCosplay why ?? Because I have a lot of that and not that fine...and the flat steel costs a lot :S
Hi. When I wear my petticoat with my dress it has this abrupt fall at the hem if you understand what I mean and it looks pretty awkward. Do you have any tips for me
It sounds like your end maybe me not be close enjoy to the end of the petticoat
Can you use plastic boning and not steal ?
I would recommend against it as it does not provide the support required
May I know the list of material used?
It is at the start of the video
-Never wave your flashlights back and fourth really fast (flashlights are their natural prey)
-Don't stomp around. They take that as challenge
-Don't ever eat sliced cubes of cheese
-Never wear a sumbrero, and a goofy fasion, and clown shoes, and A HOOP SKIRT and never Ever? EVER! AHH! SCREECH LIKE A CHIMPANZEE!!
Indeed!
What is the name of the white strip fabric
Twill tape
May i know the size of tge boning and twill tape??? There are different mm of both boning and tape. I dont know which one is to be used😬😬
Any will work as long as it is steel
@@KirileeCosplay the plastic ones can not be used?
attempting to make a hoop skirt for Tiny Tina from Borderlands 2 :)
Awesome! I hope it all works out!
@@KirileeCosplay thanks!
How did you took the measurement of four boning lengths of each 5 inche distant place boning? could you please answer me I'm asking doubt in 4:14 timing of the video
It's easy but I'm confused
Sorry I do not have that measurement. That is why doing mock ups are important
where did you buy "steel flat boning" ?
Check out cheap petticoats you can harvest it from from eBay or amazon, or try Etsy. Or try online corset supply stores
What if i dont make bone casing, and just put it together with hot glue? I will wear it for only one day
I would not recommend it
Does the boning have to be steel or could I use polyester? I'm finding it really hard to find steel boning for sale in my country 😩
I hear you- I had the same issue. I ordered mine through a seller ob Etsy. Unfortunately, polyester does not hold enough of the rigid shape that is needed
@@KirileeCosplay Thank you!
I know this is way late, but I substituted copper wire from Lowe’s (just thick enough so that I can’t bend it with two fingers) and it was way cheaper
Is there any alternatives to twill tape? Im pretty beginner
Any sort of wide ribbon with work, but a cotton tape of some sort will hold better
@@KirileeCosplaythank you
Thank you soooo much. But i couldn’t understand the calculation of 40 inch.
Thiya Chowdhury the radius of 40cm?
@@KirileeCosplay yah
You did something in the calculator. I didn't understand.
What size boning did you use
Just a normal size- about 1cm wide.
It’s mostly important to ensure you use metal boning. The width is not as importantly.
Would plastic boaning work to make this ?
Stephanie Keplinger it is not as strong so it may buckle in on itself
@@KirileeCosplay I noticed that when I was looking at it yesterday... I'm going to go with the other option I was thinking about the metal hoop boaning it's more expensive but I know it will work... I'm needing something that i can site in and move around quickly
Where did you get the steel boning?
Madison Linnett on Etsy.
Thanks :)
Can you make it out of paper? Just wondering?
No
Oh ok thx
I know this was like, 2 yes ago... but any chance you'd be willing to make me one? I know this video is about how to make a crinoline, but I have none of those materials.
No
Your 5'4? I'm 5'2. Will this be the same on me but longer?
Yes :) but you can always make the tape going vertically 2 inches shorter :)
@@KirileeCosplay ok. Thank you
