Erin and I will be cosplaying characters in the near future that require poofy dresses!! We had the option of buying our hoop skirt or making them but of course, as usual, I like to make my life difficult and I decided to make mine o3o;; Although, have no fear because this project was tedious yet fairly simple to accomplish! It originally was supposed to come out as a bell shape but ended up more A shaped...but this can easily be adjusted by removing the tape and shifting the pipes around~
I hope you enjoyed this video wether you're just curious or you need to make one yourself! Don't be afraid to drop any questions you have down in the comments section, I'll try be best to answer them!! C:
Thanks for watching and as usual, we'll see you next time!

Just an fyi you can buy connectors for the pvc piping at hardware stores. The ends just pop in. No need for tape if you want it perm. Once you are done you can use pvc adhesive inside the connectors then pop the ends in and it will stay put no removing it

When you finally decide on hoop size if you make a small slit on one end of the pipe and squash it you can push it into the other end of the pipe then tape over this will make it more round and seamless and also won't cause the heavy taped double pipe to pull down with it being heavier. If that makes sense! Great job though!

So I made this a few years ago, and then this year I made a hoop skirt with the real materials. The pipes on this one are very bulky and stiff. You can't add too many hoops since they won't collapse nicely when you sit down. Also they don't bend at all like actual hoop steel. What I would suggest is that since actual hoop steel is quite expensive, just buy enough materials for 5-6 hoops and sew those together with twill tape as the vertical strips. And make sure to measure the distances properly if you're going to buy the real stuff. I just find it worlds more flowy, and it has an organic spring to it when you press on it.

hey! this might be super late, but to get the proper 1700s look you're actually gonna need to do pocket hoops, but it's a very similar process. As for seeing with silk, make sure you use a very small needle, and silk thread. Linen or polyester seems to tug and snag at fine silks too much

A tip for making the PVC pipe easier to make into circles... you can heat it with a hair dryer or a heat gun to soften it a bit to make bending it a breeze. Just make sure to test how much heat you need on a scrap piece so you don't melt your final hoops!

I have been making hoop skirts with pvc tubing for years . for the upper rings use a 3/8 tubing the 1 inch should only be at the bottom. to connect the tubing use a smaller size that you can just fit inside your ring and push the two sides of the ring together leave as is or use a piece of duct tape on the seam. To shape your tubing just cut the length of tubing you want and put it in hot water for 10 min connect the ends and let it cool. Hope this helps with your next project

This is probably a dumb question but could this technique be used to make a crinoline skirt/cage skirt?

Hi, I loved it for its practicality and movement. Can you tell me how far from your waist you placed the first hoop and approximately what diameter you did it? You see, I need to get that figure "A" that you achieved.
Thank you very much and greetings from Mexico City

So just wondering about the pipes you use to shape the skirt would these work for an 11 year old, I'm around 30 inches at the waist and Down from there and if not what would you recommend? Im a new dress maker as you can probably tell by my age so I'm new to all this stuff 😅😅

Hi! Sorry for bothering, but I was wondering where you got the PVC piping that small! Was it a hardware store? My dad is an electrician, so he uses bigger sizes of that pipe all the time.
