- We went and made our own weed eater string based off the results of this video! We tested size, color, cut quality and more on each weed eater string / string trimmer line and we were.....surprised.

Good stuff man! I’m going to give your product a shot! Thanks for the info
Thanks! Really appreciate it
Mannnn Thank You Soooo Much!! I Enjoyed The Hell Out Of This Video‼️‼️
Glad you liked it! Make sure to check out our string we made after this video: a.co/d/hhOeaJb
I’m glad you compared them, you did a good job. My application is 15 acres of California foothills with Rocks, oaks, and barbed wire fence. I’m using it in a Stihl fs131 (bike handle) and KM 90r. I have ALWAYS used the Stihl orange line (.95) I just purchased the .105 Stihl CF3 and that Black Diamond.105. Your test surprised me. Thanks.
Thank you! Truthfully, I was really surprised too. I thought the more points a line had (i.e. Black Diamond) would cause it to cut more efficiently but I think there’s a point of diminishing returns. Also the fact that they made that line color black is beyond me. I cannot understand the logic there haha. Completely disappears at high speeds.
@@TheLawnReview I watch a lot of reviews. And to be honest, they all do not turn out with the same result. In my application I don’t need to see the line, I’m cutting weeds and wild oats that are 3 and 4 ft high. Not straight lines, no yard work, just brute force work knocking down high weeds on the side of a mountain where my tractor can’t get to. I really appreciate your hard work. And your response is just icing on the cake. If you ever get in a field and do industrial, agriculture, or ranch work be sure to post. People like you are vital for people like me because you take the guess work out of what I should use. Thanks again, and keep posting, I’ll be looking forward for your videos.
Thank you! I really appreciate the feedback. Yeah there’s definitely different applications for the same thing so it makes it difficult to provide a totally comprehensive review. I didn’t even think about thicket and things like that so maybe I’ll do a 2.0 review at some point with heavier duty stuff. Thank you for your service too!
I’m not cutting intricate lines and shapes, I’m not a professional lawn care person. I need brute cutting strength, and extreme durability. I think the black Diamond.105 is my best choice. Great video! Thanks a lot !
That's a good one if it will fit into your weed eater. We also created our own that combines the best features of each: thetlrstore.com/products/095-weed-eater-string
What’s a good triangle like .095+? I have these weeds plants that have thick, thick stems that are annoying and about to cause me to buy a saw blade for my Husqvarna 128LD? I want something that cuts annoyingly thick weeds like that consistently

Thanks for the feedback! I am posting a "Best String Trimmer" video this weekend that I've been working on all week. Super excited to share with you
Think it's a case of trial and error. I use a Husqvarna 535LK pro combi, I bought extra trimmer heads so I have different trimmer line for different jobs instantly! 2mm is great for grass, but 2.4mm+ is better for the bigger stuff. For edging, I just use the weed scissor attachment. The best trimmer line I've used, was Husqvarna X-FORCE, unfortunately it's no longer available in the UK apparently!😢
Dang sorry to hear that!
I've tried almost every type of string on my Husqvarna 28cc trying trimmer my favorite is Shakespeare Ugly twist .105 and Stihls square line .095. also saw another test done and star shaped line is the only one that actually cut the grass and didn't rip/tear it.
Yep generally the more angles, the shaper the cut but the more fragile it becomes
What brand was the .095 yellow triangle
I think Rino Tuff or something like that. This is the one we made after making this video: a.co/d/fh2HoOP
Thanks for the review. A clearer display or including that chart of the products tested that you showed in the video with names posted in your host comments would have been good as eluded to by other commenters, but I digress.
What makes your product better than the Rino Tuff .095 Triangle?
I was prepared to get a small pack of the Rino Tuff before reading other comments here. I have finally finished off a 1000' roll of an .080" square which didn't hold up for nothin'! I like the green because as one commenter related, I didn't want to see a bunch of orange bits laying around, and the green sort-of blends in to the grass. If this is every bit as good as the Rino Tuff, I'm all in!
Thanks for checking it out. Ours has three sharp edges whereas the rino tuff has softer bevels that bow inward. We created ours to be that specific shape because it adds more cutting torque, almost like little blades. We found the fewer corners the better for reducing breakability. But if you go all the way smooth like a purely round string (or even the Rino-tuff), you lose all the cutting power. The triangle was the perfect combination of both.
Really good review on these only thing that would have made it better is testing smoothness of cut. Lot of them tend to kinda kick back a little in dense grass and i hate it. Probably my number 1 think in picking line cause it stucks when you've got stuff that wants to dip down when you hit a thick patch and scalps grass or just cuts low. I use echo black diamond and crossfire right now the black in .95 and .105 and cross in .80. They are good string but i would like to find something in the middle that's durable and smooth. Hard to get that seems like though thinking about trying a thicker string on a pro torque trimmer to see if the lower gear ratio and less flexible string gives a smoother more consistent cut.
Thanks for watching! Yeah smoothness is a great point. I actually created my own weed eater string after this testing based on the results. It has been a beast so far - especially on electric weed eaters. Super super durable.
@The Lawn Review nice. I have thought about today it's hard to find perfect string it seems like. Running echo pro torque trimmer kinda makes it easier to run what is available and get good results though I run mine with .105 black diamond and it does really well. I am thinking about switching to the echomatic pro trimmer head or maybe the speed feed 450 or 500 and going with some .130 though I think the rigidity of the thicker line may eliminate the issue with it wanting to dive down occasionally. Gonna give it a try and see I been wanting the higher capacity on the speed feed 500.
@@zack6892 Let me know how it goes! Never gone up that high with string trimmer thickness.
Just ordered yours 🤞
Thanks, Erick! I think it is pretty sweet stuff! Let me know your thoughts.
Bright color line is a pain. I'm a Sexton at a cemetery. The bright color line pieces are lying around on the ground. It is unsightly, and then i have to pick up the pieces.
Wow that's tough to hear. We really liked the green, which is why we made our own: a.co/d/ij6jQju
Thats a good point
It’s why we chose green
Not intetested in visibility but how durable the line is...
Hey Spencer! Thanks - we found the ultimate combination of .095" thickness and as few angles as possible was the best. That's why we created our own (link is below the video).
Ya was just deliberating on that last nite being on a budget, and going with non name brands on ebay, or brands unfamiliar with. I went with 105 over .095 just be on the safe side...
It's not like I shop for this stuff all the time and it might be years before I do it again....
Good video though, I commented before watching the whole thing... Lol...
I'd just thought the color part was nonsense and almost turned it off...😂🤣😂
@@spencerladd2496 Oh no! Color is pretty important if you start to use any of the black, grey, or clear lines. We were surprised to see Green make as much of a difference as it did. Next time, you can use code KICKOFF20 and get 20% off.
Tbh I wasn’t to until I seen this video
Hadnt really thought about visibility but thinking about it now it is a +
Have you tested to see if soaking the string in water makes a difference. I have and believing it helps from breaking as much and staying flexible when not using them as much.
Liked#7 and subscribed and would like to be entered in to the Greenworks Mower & Trimmer Combo Kit!!!
great review - saved me money and time cheers
Awesome that’s our goal! Thank you!
Savage .105 from Lowes hands down man
Need to try it out. Eventually decided to just make my own: a.co/d/c7t6muk
Did u turn the trimmer upside down, why it's cutting on that angle..
What part of the video? I turn it on its side to do some edging?
I dont have a clue what .095 orange Plus line shape is.. but I think you missed a couple important categories.. Load (tangle resistance) and Feed smoothness (?)
Oh I like those….
What brand was the yellow triangle?
I think Rhino Tuff? Ours is better
@The Lawn Review what brand is yours and how do we get it?

From what I've noticed is that string trimmer line that cuts easier increases runtime for battery string trimmers
You should try out our string! Especially if you review tools too. Let me know if you want one.
Great review! Thank you.
Thanks, Marc! Glad you enjoyed. We actually used the results of this video to create our own weed eater string that combines all the best characteristics of these strings.

@@TheLawnReview what’s the brand of the yellow triangle one that is .095 at the top of the list? That’s the one I want. Your help would be appreciated.
Another thing to note about removing the guard, it voids your insurance.
Insurance on what?
@@TheLawnReview That comment was more aimed at commercial operators. If you are trimming on someone elses property, hit a rock and it hits someone in the eye for example, your insurance is void if you're not using a guard.
I noticed that soaking your line in water overnight definitely makes the line more durable. I’m guessing line starts to dry out if it’s sitting around for a long time.
So interesting to me. Definitely need to try it.
Well I know black diamond is at some of top performance but i do prefer a more heavier 0.95 commercial grade like diamond edge orange square shape its feel more heavy duty or the ugly line yellow triangle(a real sharp killer!!) I found myself working better when my string is louder when i hear it spinning!
You should give our string a try. We made it based off of the results of this video: a.co/d/5ZaaNA5
@@TheLawnReview Alright !! Definitely my type of string!! Thats look agressive enough ahaha im about to give it a try!
I’m a echo guy but husqvarna line is king
You think so?
Round line is a 0.95" cylinder and edged line is not really 0.95" cylindrical - only the edges are 0.95. Secondly you do not know how old the line is when you buy it so put in a bucket of water overnight to rehydrate the line. Twist line or sided line will hang up in your trimmer head because there is lots of friction between the line in the head.
Yep - all great tips! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed!
I agree with all your points, but please correct your line gauge. 0.95" is almost 1'', now that is seriously fat line. What you meant to say was .095".

This is the only one that matters
I'm very surprised! I use black diamond and I thought it was just about the best weed Wacker line I had ever used and it was night and day.
I have to try that yellow triangle shit next time!
Or your green triangle shit! We will see!
Haha let me know!
Leave the guard on. It regulates the amount of string that comes out and doesnt destroy the clutch. Taking the guard off gives zero advantage. Just an ego thing. I've been a professional Commercial lawn care tech for 20+ years. The guard also saves your legs from excessive hits from rocks etc....
I'll consider it!
Black diamond best thing ever
Not until you try ours!!
@TheLawnReview which one is yours? The one with the highest rating in your video has a terrible rating on Amazon.
@BryanGibbs-nh9uq ours isn’t on there. We made our own after this video (and as a result of it)
Little difficult to tell in this video but the tests definitely weren’t very scientific. A lot of variables at play with no way to validate repeatable results. The “cutting” test for instance depends a lot on line length and head speed, and thus tip speed. It’s difficult for me to accept your claims that the lines were just ‘eaten away’ when you really start leaning in to the tube and the line is clearly flapping around. This is also evidenced by the variation in speed we can hear. You’re never going to get an efficient cut like that when you’re constantly bogging the line down.
Clearly some lines will cut better than others but if you’re going to do a comparison video you’ve got to take the tester out of the equation to make it valid.
The goal of this test isn’t to be super scientific otherwise we would have tried to find identical weed eaters from each brand. These are the best sellers and compares their performance.
@@TheLawnReview the title of the video is “best weed eater string: ultimate test 2024 which itself doesn’t even make sense since you originally posted in at the end of 2022, so that appears a little deceitful to start. I made no mention of what brand trimmer you’re using, nor should that really matter as I only mentioned string length and tip speed, to at least give each string a somewhat even starting point, and knowing how string actually cuts (hint: there’s a reason cutting performance drops off significantly as your line - any line - whittles away, and it has nothing to do with the string’s durability).
I have zero skin in this game other than someone expecting some honesty and consistency in a “test” video where I only see you pushing your own product in the comments but no links to a head-to-head with it vs other top performers.
So, sorry, whatever your intent may have been with this video, it doesn’t inspire confidence in any of the results to me.
Thanks for taking the time to type all of this out!
We created the string as a result of this video.
@@piezoman79 They just want anyone to click on (clickbait) their video, they get compensated somehow. Who cares if it's really not what you and I are looking for.
Also, when they keep defending their video and say "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" shite and buy my crap, then you know it's misleading and false.
you should NEVER remove the guard. It will cause your trimmer to have major issues beyond the safety. it WILL destroy your gear head.
Why is that?
@@TheLawnReview The guard cuts the line at a specific length to keep the head balanced, once you take the guard off, the length of line causes the head to be unbalanced and wears the gears out quicker.
@@sardius1970 I know that is what manufacturer says and i believe that this is true but i have also known hundreds of lawncare guys that remove the guard on their trimmers and keep their machines for years to come. just saying its most likely true but hard to prove in real world practice
Long line … more gear grease more frequently… if you do that it’ll be no problems
Amen
I use maxpower twisted .095 it’s by far the best line I used. Echo black diamond is extremely brittle and would always break, when I switched over I haven’t had a single problem, got the same cut but I wasn’t changing the line as often
