This is my review of the Ryobi 40v Brushless Li-ion String Trimmer. The trimmer has excellent power, solid features, and good run time. By all accounts, it's a great trimmer. So why do I feel a certain way about it? I'm not sure I would buy it again. Watch to find out more...

I have the Expand-It version without the Hi/Low switch. I use it for weed eating around my house and on the job cutting tough weeds like Bahai Grass, Johnson Grass and Greenbriar vines from around water wells. Love that it starts EVERY STINKING TIME unlike gas powered trimmers. Nothing worse than lugging a gas powered trimmer through the woods only to have it refuse to start when it's time to work. The Ryobi trimmer works great except when I'm not careful cutting Greenbriar, but then the cutting head on my big Stihl gas powered trimmer also gets Greenbriar vines wrapped around it so can't fault the Ryobi. Bought this trimmer because I had bought the Ryobi Pole Saw/Hedge trimmer package that came with the bigger 40Vbattery. Package deals that include a battery and charger are the only way I'd buy any battery powered tool no matter the brand as the battery itself can cost as much as the tool. I've had several Ryobi battery tools over the years and they work just fine for the average homeowner.

True, but it’s still 10x harder to use, any more dangerous, than my 15 years old craftsman.
@@Ryder_In_Motion nope is not.. it is just the same.. and the edger attachment is worth it.. I've had that edger attachment for nigh on 20 years and it is far better than using a string trimmer for edging every day of the week
Aloha Ryder, I purchased one of these and dumped the bump feeder. Replaced that with a very easy attachment called, Pivotrim Rino Tuff Hybrid. Easy to change line and works great for edging, against fencing and rock walls. You should do a video on that. Thanks for your video, well done, mate. Ciao

I work at a warehouse i been picking tickets to bring out these electronic weed wackers to the customers and putting them in the tailor, and i have to say alot of people buying them none stop everytime i get more tickets to pick them and people should know that these equipments will get even better over the years no more dangerous heavy gas equipments.
I just bought this and I already had the Ryobi mower. I love it so far. He is right about the charger, but I can use the fast charger that came with my mower. I also don't think it is that hard to edge with. Just turn the handle.
I like mine (an older version, no bladed attachment) and it has served me well... but you are NOT WRONG about the ergonomics. It's exhausting. I don't know how to explain it to people who ask. It's not like it's heavy, it's just... tiring to use. So one battery and I'm out. But I will say, this is year EIGHT.

I bought my first one I 2010 withe the lawn mower , the weedeater packed it in last summer this newer model is a little bit more awkward to use , I like the quick line feed
New subscriber here. Thanks for the review. I have had Ryobi push mower and string trimmer for about 10 years. I just purchased a whisper 17” string trimmer and it’s the bump feed. Assembling this was not easy. Manual could be better. I have had good luck with the 40V line of batteries. On the smaller 18V line I am transitioning to Milwaukee (more info on that if you want).
So the reason I purchased this new string trimmer is because I let the magic smoke out of the old one. You know what they say, electronics run on magic smoke and once you let that smoke out you can’t put that magic smoke back in. Haha. I did notice that the new charger is noisier but MUCH faster charging the 6ah battery. I am impressed with that already. I will be picking up some 0.095 line and will test it in a couple of days. I am staying inside for most part as it is 105° outside this week. Again, thanks for the video. All the best from north Texas.

I got the snow blower and mower love them im gonna get the blower trimmer combo. The double edging isnt a big deal for me ive been used to flipping up side down with gas trimmers for 20 plus years doing it Commercially
I got my dad a ryobi trimmer, he was sick and tired of gas one hehaf. Since he had ryobi spare batteries from few tools hed had i got it for him. He is happy i got it since he was a lot easier to start up and use.

We are into our 3 rd year. With our 40 v weed eater n it’s great! Love it. It works long n hard. The battery will get stuck once in a while. Just use a tiny wd40 sprays squirts on each side n the back while in the weed eater, when stuck. It will come out!!!

I had a tough time edging with it as well; the bump is awkward it feels too far off the ground to be getting a close trim. I also found this one to weigh more than my previous edger too. I would not get it again.

Ive got 2 18v leaf blowers and 2 18v trimmers.. the reason is because during sales you essentially get the battery for free when you buy the tool... I figured It would be nice to have a back up tool incase it crapped out... I have yet to have a Ryobi tool die on me... and I have been using these products for over 10 years now... Because of that experience I am about to jump into the 40v system and would assume I would have a similar experience.

I found an attachment that may help with the ergonomics on this. It's called Darwin's grip. Price wise it's not too bad considering it's a universal attachment that can go on any string trimmer.

Looking to upgrade from brushed to brushless for better efficiency and tool life. Personally I picked up the brushed weedeater for 60bucks on my local classifieds and a few months down the line I stumbled upon someone who sold the expand it edger for 30 bucks.

Great video. I edge perfectly fine with mine. I adjusted the handle so I can flip it and have a more comfortable holding position. This does great on my 1.5 acre property.

I use this same model at a friends house because they hate to do yardwork. This is super stiff and hard to maneuver like you mentioned. I am tall (6 foot 10) and it works great for the most part. I see other people all the time say "turning weed eaters up is the only way to edge" which is completely FALSE. Just cut it about an inch lower than your main grass or use a half moon tool to cut your edges. Never use a gas powered or battery powered "edger" they are way too slow. Charging this battery takes approx 2 hours and 45 minutes to 3 hours on this mini charger it came with. I prefer gas/oil mix blowers, weed eaters and gas powered lawn mowers. Batteries take too much time in between and are WAY too expensive IMHO.

The edging takes a different approach. You need to angle it back towards you more. It took two batteries to get the hang of it. Also, I can use the Toro String attachment on mine. I'm going to get a 6AMH battery to see if I can cut my whole yard at one swing. Thanks for your video.

I love it, but barely get to use it cause when I have to open the head to clear out a string issue, I can't get it shut. I've done it twice, Home Depot did it for me once, and here we are again with it sitting out there open and I'm unable to "just twist to close it" problem I'm female, over 70 and small frame, so ergonomics is not the best cause it is too long and battery is heavy. But that is a common feature of someone my size for any equipment. Love the power, the battery, the color, HATE THE TRIMMER HEAD CLOSING SYSTEM.
Hey from the UK. Check out the Brush cutting line of strimmers. These are better than the nirmal string strimmers. There are 18V and 36V versions. These have a Tri Arc hardened steel cutting disc or a 2.4mm cutting line, 40cm xutting width, a bump feed spool, a carrying harness and bike handle like controls.

I use mine for edging and it really doesn't edge well at all.
I have the blade edging attachment and while it works, it does a poor job of edging.
I find the tool to be heavy and uncomfortable to hold. The ergonomics is lacking.

I bought the same kit of yours (trimmer, blower, battery and charger) from Direct Tools Outlet for $150 (plus tax and shipping, about $180).
That’s a great deal for sure.
You don't have to hold the machine at a funny angle to use it as an edger. Just disconnect it at the mid-shaft joint and turn 90 or 180 degrees.
Also, the charger DOES have a status light, it's just small.
BTW, I've used this powerhead with the pole chain saw, the tiller, and a dedicated brush cutter head (not just the little plastic-bladed option). I've even used the brush cutter head with one of those "beaver" type blades, basically a cutter blade with chainsaw teeth around the outside. It's downright ferocious on THICK woody invasives. Haven't tried the little snow thrower thingy yet. So for people who already have those Expand-It attachments from the gasser days, this power-head can keep up.
I have had the original 40v trimmer 'expand it' setup for a LONG time, mines the non brushless version. I have the weed wacker, edger, and blower expandi it attachments. They work well and I found them at super low prices online so it wasn't that much extra cost. My main question is..... is it worth the upgrade to pick up the new brushless 40v model?
Unfortunately, I can't definitively say. My last string trimmer wasn't brushless but it was also only 19.2v. This way is way more powerful, but I suspect that's a combination of the brushless motor and the additional voltage. I did fly electric RC airplane for a short while and the deference between with the brushless motors there made me a general believer that brushless is better.
I think it edges pretty well, the way you're holding it looks uncomfortable.

I never like edging with string because it eats the string. You can get a brushed 18v edger for 99 dollars msrp. The edger attachment is also commonly on sale for 99.
But the whole point of the attachments is they take up less space while still offering the same tools. I have this exact one, an edger and the blower and I plan on getting the extended trimmer and the pole saw because it would just take up less space in my garage and the other attachments are notably cheaper than the full tool counterparts. The edger is the worst value attachment
I agree with you about the edger attachment. I had one for a previous gar trimmer and never thought it was worth the cost. The attachment worked fine in places where the edge was clean/square (like the sidewalk) but couldn't be used where the edge sort of drifted off (like a blacktop driveway). As such, I always ended up using the trimmer anyway. Thanks for weighing in.
@Ryder_In_Motion I actually just broke out my edger today to start my spring cleaning and I have no straight lines anywhere on my property. It still works very well and I once again have nice clean lines. You can turn it slowly if you keep the cuts slightly on the shallow side.
Turns out U can actually put .065 up to .105 in tht head, I have .065 in mine and it works fine. May also get better runtime with tht baby line.

That's what I've been doing. Still feels so awkward with this trimmer. Was so easier with my old craftsman.
Way off base on attachment ability ...I use tiller , chain saw and edger . Some I already had that fit .You can edge with the guard off .
Thanks for weighing in. I had the attachments on a Ryobi gas trimmer years ago and never felt like they were worth the money. Dedicated tools have worked way better for me. Of course, everyone’s experience is different and that’s why I appreciate you sharing yours. I do keep thinking about giving the hedge trimmer a try. I really need a better one than what I have.
Ryobi needs to vent these batteries. They take a half hour to cool down before you can even charge them. The Greenworks mower I have doesn’t have this problem

What drives me crazy is they call Lisa weed eater and everybody just cut grass with them where I’m from they do cat tails and they do vines thorn bushes as the electric ones going to hold up to this kind of abuse

Just to let everyone know, when you by this trimmer for 179$ American here in 2023 you must then pay 219+ taxes just for a extra battery.
Don't forget the additional $129 for the edger attachment by itself.

This is a horrible tool. Mine worked for about ten minutes. The instructions are sparse, and when the nylon cord got swallowed up inside, the cartridge wouldn't open. I watched videos that made it look easy, but my cartridge will not release. The cord is bound up inside. I'll be returning it to Home Depot.
