      I think the art was far too personal to be on display in a house that's being sold; that should all have been put away to use in whatever they bought afterward. But the colors, except the ugly stripes in the stair hall, were spot on for a Victorian.

  • @mapleleaf0
    @mapleleaf0 Před 3 lety +59

    Well, it's really mixed reviews on this one. I agree with those who say the original colors were great, and I also understand that the house felt too dark to buyers. I also was not happy with the light blues and lavenders because they didn't enhance the existing wood tones. You can't just pick any light trendy color. She needed to pull out her color wheel. One commenter mentioned that this was a coastal Victorian and buyers in the area would want a more airy feel. The show should have explained that, especially since the comp didn't make that clear at all.
    The painting of the settee didn't work on multiple levels, imo. Painting it white made it look like garden furniture to me, not to mention the shame of painting it at all. It would have been better to just remove it than to paint it.
    Someone mentioned they painted millwork, but I don't think they painted any wood that hadn't been previously painted. The doors were previously red and the middle room millwork was previously painted white.
    By the way, the kitchen which they didn't touch looked fantastic.
    I think what it comes down to is, are you restoring the house to it's original glory (in which case you want to choose original colors and furnishings) or are you making a modern update to a historic home bringing it into a "transitional" style, keeping original bones and millwork, but changing paint, furnishings, accessories, and in some cases light fixtures, to look fresh? It doesn't work unless you marry the two (original bones and new aspects). I think she tried to take it from the former to the latter but missed the mark on this one.

    • @kristinatidwell6563
      @kristinatidwell6563 Před 3 lety +2

    This house looked great as it was, I loved their quirkiness. Philistines who don't appreciate the Victorian colour chart as applied to a Victorian property don't deserve to live there. I wasn't into the striped walls but the rest was awesome. The makeover appealed to the kind of people who rip out period fireplaces, I thought it looked dreadful and cluttered with modern junk.

    • @tonibauer2949
      @tonibauer2949 Před 5 lety +5

      Irene that is a typical coastal style cottage found in Savannah and surrounding areas, not a gingerbread Victorian where that dark pallet might work. Those houses typically have light, bright interiors. In any case, few people want to embrace the dark, womb like esthetic of the Victorian age. It is perfectly fine to retain some of the charming elements of the past while bringing in brightness and contemporary style as well. And I am a 72 year old who collected antiques most of my life. An attempt to recreate the living environment of the past rarely works and certainly isn’t appreciated by most younger people, who are the ones buying houses. I think the new interiors are great.

      @@tonibauer2949 Thanks for your reply Toni. I'm in the UK so I'm not too familiar with US architecture and style. I once owned a Victorian property (built in 1886) and the living room in particular looked stunning painted in dark red period colour. Once I'd stripped the Plastikote spray paint off the original fireplace (I cursed the ignorant bastards who did this) to reveal black slate and original tiles, and painted the cornices correctly it enhanced the property no end. I did paint other rooms with lighter shades, especially if they had no windows. 2.5 years later I sold for £30k more than I bought it for.
      However I expect you are right about younger house buyers, although I do still think it looked cluttered with less appealing items than they had before. Each to their own I guess. I am that rock chick who would have loved their house and bought it the way it was.

When I rented it out my tenants redecorated with my blessing, lining one wall of the living room and main bedroom with good quality black wallpaper (they also replaced all of the flooring and did a nice job of it). All other walls are white. I found it a bit bold, but liked it and have lived happily with it as it looks good with my wooden furniture and black ironwork on other walls. I'd appreciate your take on how that may or may not appeal to others. There is a fad here for gun metal grey paint which I think will run its incredibly boring course so I'm loathe to follow it.

      Some people might love the black, but it may put off a lot of people. Yeah, as for the grey, it is the new beige, and overdone in my opinion, though I think the lighter tones of grey can provide a nice neutral background for some nice pops of color. If selling, it might be a good idea to go with that. It’s a lot of work selling a house, but I hope you find the place you truly can embrace as home and make your own, whatever your style may be. Sadly, the makeover paint was a miss also. Just the wrong shades. You have to coordinate with the tone of the existing woodwork when picking neutral creams and white. Not hard to do. I think the problem was not that it was too dark. It was just too much red tones. The wooden floors and other wooden elements were already a reddish tone, then the walls, the furniture and the textiles...I think if the couple had chosen blues and greens for the walls, even darker tones, that would have been a totally different atmosphere and would have suited the house more. But what I really don´t understand is that the interior of a house really does keep so many buyers from considering to buy it. Like, you can always paint walls and make other tiny renovations. I think it´s ridiculous tho spend money to meet other peoples expectations, when they maybe will renovate after buying anyways. Can´t people see beyond the furniture, wall colors and decorations? Little bit of imagination would help. I also wouldn´t mind personal decor or any kind of artwork, I mean there are actual people living there it´s not a show home. It will be gone with the owners so why does it matter? In Germany, no one would expect to find a house that is "move-in-ready". And I don´t think such a thing even exists, you can never 100% meet another ones taste... You would make it your own either way would´nt you, I mean you´re buying, not renting.
    Having this said, this hideous lavender was the most terrible choice they could´ve picked. The texture of the paint also seems to be dull, looks cheap. A nice, bone-coloured, satiny finish would have been the better choice. Horrible.

      The furniture they painted wasn’t valuable, the previous interior color was hideous, and the truth is the house wasn’t a typical Victorian gingerbread in the first place. Savannah and surrounding areas are coastal, with many similar cottage style houses in which preferred colors are light and bright. Most people do not want to live in cluttered, dark spaces nowadays. I am 72, collected antiques and vintage items most of my life but never tried to recreate the past. I now live in a light, bright modern apartment with a few remaining antique pieces, lots of open space and light walls. Some of the people in my senior building attempt to cling to everything from their past and overstuff their places with tired looking stuff. That’s fine, if it suits them. Everyone should do what makes them feel comfortable in their home. But when they come to my place they love it and don’t understand why it seems so much more open, cheerful and bright by comparison to theirs.

      Rebecca Gable that is not a gingerbread Victorian, but a coastal cottage common to Savannah and surrounding areas. They typically are done in a light, bright style. Most families aren’t comfortable in dark, womb like environments now, in any case. And as a person who collected antiques for years, I can tell you those aren’t valuable pieces which were painted. Older furniture has actually decreased in value in the last 20 plus years. When I sold a lot of mine to move into an apartment, I was prepared for the low prices I got. Even in older houses, most people want a mix of contemporary and old. I now live in a bright open apartment with light walls and lots of light, with only a few of my favorite pieces blended in, enjoy it very much and get nothing but compliments on how fresh and original it looks.

    Interior Victorian Colors were traditional earth tones often in deeper hues of red, amber, emerald, and dark brown. Drama was part of the effect by using different rich deep colors so each room felt dramatic. However their Hallways were painted in neutral shades of gray and tans as were entrances. These colors were enhanced by using various faux painting techniques that imitated authentic design elements at a fraction of the cost such as marbling, stenciling and wood-graining.
    Victorians implemented the use of complementary colors (opposite colors on the color wheel) so they would not have red walls and red Floors and red curtains.

      Many a Victorian home had painted woodwork from new, particularly in less formal areas of the house. They did not paint any woodwork that was not painted to begin with. The back parlour quite likely has always had painted millwork, as it was always the family sitting room. The front parkour and dining room, being formal, and where guests would be taken, still have the natural wood grain proudly on display. It is unfortunate indeed that someone painted both sides of sll the doors.

    • @nohjuan3048

      The woodwork in some craftsman cottages was MEANT to be painted. Our 100 year old house has the original woodwork and when we stripped it, we found it was very unappealing tulip wood, was never stained or varnished, and didn't have a pretty grain. We painted it back up. Even woodwork that looks like natural wood is, in some houses, painted with a woodgrain pattern. Victorians the same way. Some are varnished natural wood, some never were.

I think Sophie sometimes goes a bit astray with her colors, but, again, if pale blue isn’t what you want, you’ll paint it. What are the odds of choosing the exact colors that everyone wants in every room? She always stresses decluttering, depersonalizing, and neutralizing for as many potential buyers as possible. Creams, rich greens, rich blues and rich reds in the soft furnishings. Then mountains, flower fields, green pastures etc as old or modern landscape pictures). That would have suited the Victorian house!.... Not "California Beach" style (pale blues, shells, seahorse and beach pictures/paintings)?
