- Andover Kansas tornado.
April 29th, 2022
Part one, looking south from central street.
.......Clarifications.....
It passed 700 yards east of us and the city building was spared by about 100 feet (lots of city vehicle damage though.)
I've been in KS for 60 years. This is the second twister I've seen and the first I've filmed.
My wife was upset and scared and I was an idiot to keep filming, but I had a very good grasp of where it was and I could see it was moving NNE. We had a basement just a few steps away. She was right to be as upset as she was considering how many people's live were at risk.
It was just us two at home, no pets and a basement 5 seconds away.
We just moved to Andover 9 months ago. It's a great town. Andover will be just fine and stronger than ever soon. Thankfully, nobody perished.
If you would like to volunteer or donate to the relief, please do....Here is the united way site www.unitedwayplains.org/disas...
I'm dedicating this to my mom. She passed in December 2021. She was raised on a farm in Ford Co Kansas. She always said when living on a farm, if you saw a twister, you "bend over, grab your ankles and kiss your A** goodbye"....I'm pretty sure she was driving this twister. - Sport
This is absolutely incredible. Probably one of the best tornado videos record from home. You can just hear that thing roar while tearing everything in its path apart. Im glad you guys are safe and awesome video!
Those 2001's at the beginning were very creepy!

Mike, your wife is a keeper. She stayed with your throughout your entire either brave or foolish filming experience. Please give her a hug for me, the dear, sweet lady. I'm in another tornado state, Illinois. So many of ours are at night. I really hate those blind ones. I'm glad you're both safe.
Foolish.
@@mitzloo1933 Yes, very foolish.
This is in Kansas, seeing tornados is normal to them, many people come outside and film and/or watch, within reason of course...But yes, they are used to it..
I'd have slapped her and told her to shut the hell up because I'm filing a g-damn tornady!
We just got hit with idk.. maybe nearly 7 tornados in the last week I think (I live in Minnesota), we got so many blind tornados and it was really scary our windows nearly popped out.
You can just tell in her voice, she’s thinking “we are about to lose everything” the way she said “I just feel bad for all those people” my heart just breaks for them.
While Mike doesn’t give a tinkers curse for those people - or for her. Convinced from now on that he can exactly dictate the path of tornadoes - he will never accept that his need for souvenirs and social media approval could easily have got them killed.
She needs to divorce him: he will risk her life for trivia.
@@eh1702 Or... he correctly identified that they weren't going to get hit. it was a very well defined tornado with a well defined course
@@magnumdongman446 Evidently he turned out to be right. But a tornado is quite capable of turning in any direction at any time. He COULD NOT know. He was a tually guessing, and even the most experienced and most technically-equipped weather people can only guess. But like you, he probably thinks that now he predicted it from some sort of actual knowledge.
@@eh1702 it was quick judgment during a shocking event. i think your quick assessment of his character is absurdly harsh
@@eh1702 looks like somebody forgot to take their medication today 💜 anybody who lives in an area that frequently gets tornadoes and hurricanes know that most of us literally stand outside on the porch, watching that shit when it happens every single time he’s not the only person to whip his phone out and take a video of it whenever there’s a storm, literally almost every single person does it. Stop being sensitive about things and go take a nap. You’re acting a little cranky right now sweetie 💜
Far and away THE BEST, CLEANEST tornado video ever. Your wife is such a darling soul. Worried about you, worried about strangers! I love her to pieces. This one came right TO them...how much closer could I want them to get without risking life and limb? I think you misunderstood my opening phrase, perhaps?
THAT IS ONE FREAKING CLEAN TORNADO!
The color, the shape, EVERYTHING! It's beautiful, really! That's crazy!
It was so perfect, I felt like I was watching a CGI of a tornado. All the other vid's proved it's in freaking real time. What a gift to scientists and storm watchers. A double edged sword. Beautiful and destructive. What a show!
I know right, this thing is freaking pristine. Talk about staring death in the face
I sent this video to my mom so fast.
The vapor vortex was such a beautiful shade! Looked so good!
@@winterwolf7812 you could always jump in the car and flee lol
Holy crap that was close to you. I've seen tornadoes suddenly expand from a few yards wide to a mile wide in seconds. You weren't as safe as you thought you were, but luckily its base stayed relatively small. I felt for your wife. But WOW. You got such a close up view. Great video!
This^^^
Thank you for warning people.
Also they can abruptly change directions
yes he says it's a quarter of a mile away, but how fast is it moving across the ground?
@@holmeselectric9 This is true. But it's base was only going to allow it to get but so big. Those big mile wide tornadoes have huge low hanging bases. But even still that sucker could have gone wedge and gotten about a half mile in width prolly and that would have been awful for them if it did. They were as he said about 300 yards away. Smh. Still great footage.
in my head i was screaming “stop being stupid and run inside!!!!” but at the same time this is the most mesmerizing videos i’ve ever seen. probably one of the clearest videos of a tornado taken from a phone.
how blessed i am to see this and know you’re okay. you’re wife is truly a blessing, how sweet she is and she would not leave you. she would have gotten taken up in the tornado if you had! that is love. i pray both of you and your families are okay 🥺
They wouldn't have uploaded the video if they were dead.
Didn't she agree to "till death do us part". It's in the wedding vows.
This is literally one of the best tornado videos filmed from home that I have ever seen. I’ve watched a lot of tornadoes videos from years past. Just incredible. The sound of the roar is deafening with earbuds in!! Glad you are all alright.

Spectacular footage! Absolutely amazing! I don't blame your wife one bit for panicking, I was getting goosebumps just watching your footage. Thank you for sharing.
God bless your wife her heart is in the right place. Thinking about others and staying by your side. Definitely a keeper.
I’ve watched tons of tornado’s on CZcams but this man has presented the absolute best video I have ever watched. “Someone actually holds a camera still.” Thank You for this. I watched a couple others that used a drone to show the destruction from this tornado and it was terrible.
This is good, but go look at the drone footage of this same tornado.
Yes, the after drone showed what really happened. The pattern of the tornado was the typical of it's irregularities. Great footage.
I'm 4000 miles away.... Close enough!
In portrait mode :/
Always remember to turn the phone sideways to get better HD footage.
@@NickoGibson I wish everyone who offers a video on CZcams would take your advice - “And don’t Pan so fast”… Most of the time - our eyes can’t keep up with what they are trying to show us. Very good advice Nicky G…
Watching it funnel is so mesmerizing. Perfect clarity and its sitting in place, almost like it's hovering. I'm so heartbroken for the wife being so scared and you not going down with her, but at the same time I have to appreciate you for filming this for us to see
I don't usually comment on videos.. but seeing how you and your wife stayed together no matter what is really sweet. Just her saying "I'm not leaving.. you need to come with me" just made my heart melt. I wish the best of luck to you two with rebuilding your town.
I've never in my entire life heard real sound of tornado. what a experience
In person it's awesome!
I know they are vital, and necessary, but the sound of those warning sirens must be truly terrifying. My prayers to everyone affected by this. Love from Canada 🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦
Screw Canada. Signed, all 50 of us down here.
They sound that way to get your attention and to let you know that danger is immanent.
Hello from Ukraine
Warning sirens are designed to trigger some primal fear response. They mimic wolf howls in their general sound profile, and the up and down pitch changes allow them to be heard over lots of other ambient noise.
i live in oklahoma and hearing these sirens definitely gets your adrenaline going but without these sirens alot of people would lose their lives so its definitely a blessing to have them
I've watched a lot of video today and I think you have the best. As terrifying as it is ... it's hard to stop watching. Glad to see you made it through safe and sound. That was close!

The heart of the swirling destructive beast...phenomenal footage...thank you good sir for having a set of steel ones to maintain the camera work for the full duration...that is one of, if not the best pieces of tornado footage I believe I have seen on this platform...the silence of the funnel in the distance...and then the ominous dull roar as it neared...was just simply mesmerising...thank you...and your wife (bless her)...for that footage...and thank the good Lord you're both safe!!!!
Cheers from Sydney Australia!!!!!
This video perfectly captures the sound of the roar and the violence of the suction. Everything was immediately uprooted and taken into the air. I hope everyone was safe.
Stunning video. Very foolish not to go shelter underground with an EF2/3 (?) that close, but to be fair, I would have probably stood there mesmerized and filming just the same. Sounds like no fatalities, and relatively few injuries, which is a testament to advancing technology, meteorologists and storm chasers.
It's mesmerizing until ya get hit by shrapnel or the neighborhood gets taken out. I'm with you on the FOOLISH part. "And THIS is a Kansas tornado" like he is proud and he produced it!?.and so condescending to his wife. 🙄
My heart is with the lady...she needed him to be with her...but every male I know would have kept filming...magnificent footage
So far it's an EF3 but with winds of 165 mph it's pretty much an EF4.
When you see the destruction it's mostly an EF4
@@lorisgonzalez4336 That doesn't make sense. A tornado is either an EF4 or it's not. What does ''mostly an EF4'' supposed to mean?

It’s such a blessing most of the tornadoes we do have form and go through rural areas causing minimal damage. They are so beautiful in a dark, mesmerizing way, like watching a flame flicker or feeling the rush of cold wind before a giant thunderstorm. I’m so glad you were all ok and hope the damage was minimal in Andover… thank you for sharing this reminder of the power of nature and how blessed we are to live another day.
Statistically there is much more rural area for one to hit than populated areas.
Thanks for sharing. You were in a great location for capturing the video. For as many tornados as pass through Kansas every year, rarely is someone in the right place and with enough daylight to get such a great video.
Feels good to be alive and virtually catastrophe free.
What an awesome video. Thanks for recording and sharing!
I went through a massive tornado at a friends home in north Topeka back in 1978. The major damage it produced missed their home by a block, but devastated the large trees in their neighborhood sending one straight though the second story of a home about 6 houses down on the other side of the street from theirs. Could hear the roar and the house breathe with it. I had been close to others, but they were all rural and not as devastating. It was hard on my friends husband because he watched from the south end and knew it was close to his wife and little boy and he was feeling helpless. He cried when he finally was able to get through the damage and saw that they were fine. It took real courage to stand and video this. They can change direction and hop so quickly. Bless your better half. Heart of gold there.
That was just one of the most incredible videos Ive ever seen.

I lived in Kansas my whole life. In 2005, I moved to Anchorage, Alaska where the most we get in the summer weatherwise is a rainstorm. Thunderstorms are an extreme rarity here. I miss the storm season in Kansas, but I DO NOT miss the front row seat to the destruction of lives and property. So heart breaking. I know it comes with the territory in Kansas and there's nothing you can do about it, but it's still sad. One silver lining though is all the people who drop literally everything to help and to stay until every last person has what they need. Kansans are a cut above the rest when it comes to helping their neighbor, even if their neighbor is miles or even several towns away. ❤️🌻🌪
