Moore Oklahoma EF-5 Tornado Video! 5/20/13

- Our full length video from Moore Oklahoma on 5/20/13. Video starts from SW 164th St. looking west/southwest at the fully condensed stovepipe tornado. We then drive up to Pennsylvania Ave. where we stop and film some more after the tornado had transformed into a 1/4 to a 1/2 mile wide wedge tornado. We then drive north to SW 134th/4th St. and head east on it to the intersection of it and S Western Ave. where the video resumes in front of The Crown Center. I then run across the street and film a little there to get a better angle. There is a white Chevrolet pickup driving past me that my partner had just spoken with that lives right where the tornado was going through just south of the intersection of Southwestern and 134th/4th St. He had told my partner that he had heard about the storm and went down the street to check to see if they were in the path or safe. He also mentioned that his children were still home. The tornado ended up being to close by the time he had seen it to make it back to his house safely. We still to this day do not know the outcome of his situation. I would love to learn that the whole family had survived maybe just being in the outer circulation. At this moment, it is also making a direct hit on the Orr family farm. Once we started driving again we travel east on 134th/4th St. and we end up having our closest encounter with the monster of the day. At this point, you can hear a distinct roar coming from it as I am telling my partner to back up as it starts to widen and is also directly over the Briarwood Elementary school at this time. We let it get east just a bit and then proceed to following again. As we come to a stop after passing through Sante Fe Avenue you can hear it once again still doing damage. At this time it is directly over Plaza Towers Elementary and is seconds from a direct hit on the Moore Medical Center. May god be with the families involved in this traumatic experience and may the recovery process be quick and successful. I love how police follow the tornado with sirens like they're going to arrest it lol
@Quartz Universe no way. Don't ruin it for my imagination. I would much rather they try to arrest it.
The tornado smelled like marijuana

Hit and run! Vandalism by willful destruction of property! Battery with intent to cause physical harm. Acts of criminal mischievous and reckless endangerment! Bad tornado, bad boy! You’re going downtown! Wait... No, no, no, downtown. Don’t go downtown. You’re free to go someplace else!

To see it up close on a YT video I guarantee you is nothing like to see it in person. I bet its the most surreal thing ever. We appreciate yall.

@@robertstone9988my great grandmother lived just outside murphysboro and went in to try and help after she saw the wood flying around the backend of the tornado. She said it was all gone. Children’s bodies were mangled and tossed around Logan school. The trauma of watching a kid walk across the dirt road in the rain crying with half his arm bent horribly, coupled with the fires of the coal mill nearby that killed her neighbors was terrible. She only told us bits and pieces before she passed. The fact she said the only time she ever got PTSD from it was from seeing pictures of villages in Vietnam bombed always got me.
About 2 hours before the tornado touched down, I was in labor with my first baby and by the time it lifted, I was holding my daughter.

I once got caught outside in an EF four tornado. I was just outside of the vortex trying to run away and it felt like somebody was pulling me by the shirt. The shocking thing about the experience was that I was about a half a mile away!

Most terrifying day of my life. I lived right behind Moore Highschool and the tornado barely missed the school. So many of my friends lost their homes and so many children past away. Sad day.
This was a horrible day for me. I was in school crammed into a hallway with people throwing up all around me and the floors were soaked due to people sweating. It missed us but when we got released the after math around us was horrendous. I’ll never forget this day. Tornados are terrifying
I was among one of the army units that got activated to come help with SAR. The aftermath was horrible. I still have some of the pictures I took
I'm always surprised that we hear so few accounts of PTSD, etc., due to these horrific events. Survivors of tornadoes certainly fit the criteria for post traumatic stress but we, and content creators, only seem to be focused on the tornado itself, not on the people suffering through this horror.
I couldn't imagine experiencing something like this without it affecting my life.
Yeah they sure are but you got folks who make jokes about them though.

Not true. The devil does.
This is the first video I’ve ever seen that gave me an accurate sense of the scale of an EF5 wedge in relation to a house or neighborhood. Even in the distance, that thing looked gargantuan. But at the point where you started backing up, it was like standing in front of a giant, about to crush the neighborhood. This is the first video that gives me a visual reference that conveys the true “mile wide” enormity of the funnel. The video was shot at angles that made it feel like being there.
This was truly awesome. And terrifying.
THANK YOU!!!

It was 1.3 miles at its widest and caused EF4 damage at that size. Now when narrowed a little bit to 3/4-1 mile-wide it caused EF5 damage. Some neighborhoods looked like they were literally erased.

I can’t imagine what It feels like to live in a place like this that’s constantly on edge, not knowing when the next tornado hits or when you’re gonna lose your home and possessions or even a loved one. It’s just crazy.
Not really on edge.. Tornado alley has started to shift to the east.. This was the last ef5 tornado in oklahoma which is the longest time frame between F5 tornados in a very long time.. Also, growing up in Oklahoma, it's extremely rare that your house would actually get hit by a tornado and in my entire 36 years on this Earth, there's only been a couple times I have actually been even slightly concerned about a tornado.

I was there the day it happened. I haven't forgotten this tornado or the wonderful town of Moore.
What I always find interesting about massive wedge EF4-5 tornadoes is how subtle the funnels seem to spin. Some smaller tornadoes reveal their violent rotation much more clearly, where the larger (and deadlier) wedge ones seem to conceal their ultra-violent spins inside a thickness of slower-moving outer funnels and debris clouds. RIP to all who were lost to this monster.

I live in the country and we had a tornado that almost completely touched down earlier this year. I woke up outta a dead sleep and could hear it in the woods. The woods had been brush burned so there were spaces between the trees and it sounded like thousands of wild animals running through the forest all at one time 😩
Oh that sound probably haunts you. Geez.
As someone who was in this, it sounded like the gates of hell opening. I also was 3 so I don’t remember much else, other than when we got out of the shelter, the sky was all orange, no other colors, and it was wet everywhere. We were lucky to live in a storm chaser’s house with a bunker, and the tornado didn’t destroy our house.
This might be some of the best audio of a tornado roar I've ever heard.
That is exactly how it sounded

This was a devastating day for us here, in Oklahoma. Moore is my home town and I now live about 5 miles from there. So many lives were lost that day. Children were killed. Teachers were killed protecting children. One teacher was pregnant. She and her baby died that day. I was in a panic, as I did not know if my grandchildren (twins) were in the shelter by the time this hit, until about 10 minutes after the tornado hit. I THANK GOD they were already in the shelter. I just cannot describe the devastation we went through, while still living in Moore,. May 3. 1999 was bad enough but this one was even worse. We are expecting tornados this coming Tuesday, April 26th, 2016. I have a very, very bad feeling about it... I pray people are prepared and ready to get to their shelter BEFORE the sirens sound, as by then we only have a few minutes.. Please, if you live in the areas the tornados are predicted to hit, just STAY HOME that day, keep your children, loved ones and pets close to you and ready to go into the closest shelter possible. Have a few days worth of survival supplies for your family and pets. Remember to take any medications into the shelter with you and anything else you may need in case you are trapped. Register your shelter NOW so the police, fire department and EMSA will know your location.. Just praying my gut feeling for Tuesday is wrong...
I wanna see a tornado in real life but I hope no one dies I live in Nebraska so there's been warnings but no tornados I'm sorry to hear :(
+julie wagoner The Lord took those people a little sooner. He works in mysterious ways. God bless our Christ and Savior!
D5quared91 Yes, God does work in very mysterious ways. It was so heart breaking to see the little children being buried over the next several days. My heart broke and still breaks for those children's parents. I do know they are in heaven with Jesus and no more sorrow, pain or tears shall befall upon them. The worst part was when that group, West borough thought it was okay to protest at the funerals of the children and all others, while holding signs that said, 'They are burning in hell" and things of that nature. I thank God our governor made it illegal for them to be anywhere near the funeral services for 2 hours before and two hours after each service. The people, here, in Oklahoma, really came together and formed human blockades to prevent any disturbances. i just do not understand how that group goes around the country doing such things when people pass away, especially little children. I do know that God will hold them accountable for their actions... He IS our Lord and Savior!!!!
A friend of mine grew up in Moore, lived in Oklahoma the first F5 that hit in 1999. Her parents house survived the first two F5's and lost their house in this one. They never returned back to Oklahoma after that. Can't say I blame them. I grew up in tornado alley myself, never once saw a major tornado or had one even strike near me. In 2011 the outbreak on the east coast, I experienced my first major tornado, an EF3 formed and went through my backyard. The train sound you hear is so very true, it destroyed a Lowes store 15 minutes away. I live in NC now, here you think about hurricanes possibly, not major and deadly tornados.
WickedlyMe328 I am thankful they survived that awful day. I do not blame them for moving and never returning. I am thankful you survived the 2011 outbreak. Yes, the tornados sound exactly like a train that is literally about to take out you house and possibly take your life. I know the hurricanes can be just as destructive but at least there is usually enough warning for people to get to away. I just hate the destruction that comes with both the tornados and the hurricanes..I am certain it was VERY terrifying when you did experience your first tornado. So many people think it would "be cool" to see one. They just don't realize what they are asking for....
And I still love my town and state no matter. ❤

@larzuga1 yes their clearly hurt
But yet, still better at blowing? :)
1:38 this dude is brave as shit, that Tornado looked pretty close to me
This is one of the best tornado videos i've seen. Especially at 6:05 - this looks so surreal: the dark, the winds, the debris, the roar.... It looks like a scene out of this world.
Tornadoes have to be one of the most terrifying natural disasters out there
Gods, look at how dark it became from the dust and debris. Watching it go through the town gave me chills.
Kosmo Khaos Gods?
Kosmo Khaos imagine watching it in real time. Thank god I lived just half a mile outside of town but it was just enough distance watch it hit the town it destroyed my elementary school I went to as a kid. I remember the building that getting get torn up were covered in mud everything was covered in mud I remember driving by the hospital and there was a pile of cars stacked up cuz the cars were getting lifted but some were not high enough yet to scale the wall of the hospital so they just piled up in front of it. Piles of dead livestock everywhere that was the worst not only did the tornado hit the Orr family farm but it also hit a horse farm! A farm that only had horses in talking like 300 died people were finding there horses in radon spots some alive some dead some in agonizing pain the train sound and sirens u will never forget
Kosmo Khaos sane here
I was actually in Ada Oklahoma during this Storm. Saw it from my grandmothers porch for a good while, the aftermath heading to OKC was absolutely crazy
300 miles plus... The hand of God... Probably won't see anything like this again for a long time
Farmer: get off my property!
Tornado: get off of MY PROPERTY!!!!
Farmer: Oh shit! Yes sir!
iLikeTigerz101 Tornado: Hippity hoppity I destroyed your property

06:20 "Welcome to Moore!"
No thanks I don't want to die especially if tornadoes that size like to visit Moore I'll stay at home.
@@donaldcountryman3546 it's the biggest tornado they've received in decades so you'll be fine as long as you have a cellar.
Gamer X Tay what? Moore has famously been hit with 2 F5s in the last 20 years
I dont get hit I live in cleveland county my house is in a perfect place
@@TheLocalLt Which is 2 decades.... 🤦🤦🤦🤦
There’s something so calming watching these videos baked.
I live in a part of the country that doesn't get many tornadoes. When we do, they are usually rather weak and out in the middle of a field. So, this kind of storm intrigues me yet terrifies me at the same time....
This tornado was a whole different breed of tornado entirely. This storm was the worst I've EVER seen & I won't forget the sight of it as it came into Moore. It haunts me to this day over a decade later. This tornado was my 2nd EF5 tornado as a chaser. First one was the record breaker that nailed Joplin in 2011.
It gets crazy here in Oklahoma during spring time...
ooh, Invite me
Savage Sooner sure does
@@Tc-rn8lh hey 👋 there have you ever seen a tornado 🌪 in person I’m just wondering ok 👌 dude lol 😂
That red car was going like 15 mph. It's all good just another F5 don't want a speeding ticket trying to get out of deaths way lol sheesh
Stark Tech. I'd drive up the wrong side of the road or in reverse if I had too. Screw the street laws. What are they going to do give you a ticket?
dynfedf6 the best of luck. I am a beautiful person. I will not have the option. if I had the chance of a few years,
Always amazes me to see people driving in these videos...lalala like it's just another day
Stark Tech. i was there that day! smaller cars have to or else those CRAZY wilds will flip the car, especially on a wet road
Stark Tech. i couldn't even comprehend a word you said there, sorry what was that again? and don't have weird writing next time.
Building a bunker is more likely a necessity now specially with that freak of a weather conditions
Took me all these years to want to find a video of what was happening while I was in the storm shelter. Live right in Moore, Ok and I hope whoever is renting our home now never sees bad weather like we did this day.
I am from Ontario Canada and never saw a tornado in my life. Only on video or TV. They look terrifying and I don't know why people chase after them!!!
Canada has tornados. Even had one EF5
They study them.
To understand the science behind them. To make better warning systems and find out how to build houses and shelters better. Spotters help notify people as to where the tornado is and when to take shelter. They help by calling into the national weather service to gets warnings out to civilians in the path. Not a job for the faint of heart, for sure, but they're doing it for a good cause. We need the data and videos to help prevent more fatalities in the future. A nobel and dangerous cause. Some are just thrill seekers but most just have a passion for the science and wonderment of these storms. A lot of them go to university and are meteorologist or engineers. Again, just trying to make things better for the world.
Chuck King its fun
You have the best work in the world
Jesus. Ive watched this numerous times over the years and it never gets not terrifying. What a dark nasty beast of a tornado dude.
Wow.
I have a question for you have you ever seen a tornado 🌪 in person I’m just wondering ok 👌 dude lol 😂
I was in the Moore area in 99’ when that tornado went through, and this tornado was said to be even worse. A lot of people don’t realize how bad this tornado really was.
In times like these my admiration and respect for first responders is total
Deadly ef6 tornado: exists
Pecos Hank: 😀
jellypanda_07 with his Captain Crunch!
I thought it only went up to ef5?
@@GoBuckeyes216 I think theoretically it goes up to EF 10 or 11
Bill Hill wow. I’ve only ever heard of ef0-ef5
@@GoBuckeyes216 there has never been anything above EF5 but the scale goes beyond that.
4:41 Best audio example of what they sound like that I've ever heard! Great video you all!

Man you guys are crazier than a Mo!!! But it was some awesome close up footage...footage that I have not seen before. Stay Safe!!
Those mile-wide monsters scare the bejesus outta me
Did you know El Reno was *_2.6 miles wide_*
What do you mean “English please?”
That's fine English..
Even 3 miles at certain points
@@EarlTheGamerRevived that idiot probably thought you were speaking spanish lmao
I hate when passengers tell the driver to back up or turn around and the driver has to sit there and compute driving like 🤯 you want me to WHAT!? in THIS car!? I've never turned around in my LIFE!
You don't have to turn around. Just beep your horn at the tornado and it will move out of your way.
tempo1889 Modern problems require modern solutions
Police understand he was trying to get out of the way. The police are usually being directed where to go by state Gov. And weather service. The sirens also warn people if they cant hear the general sirens being sounded
Also the guy is barking orders & navigayes them upclose to the tornado..... THEN wants him to back up....... hpow bout go ahead & turn around & watch it out the back windown or whatever but atleast ou will be able to get out of there fast, not backing up swerving around with traffic around and 15mph
Liz it’s bad that you haven’t learned to drive yet Good Luck in your life
I love in Moore, I remember this tornado very vividly, I watched it destroy the Warren Theater less than a mile from my house. Just watching this video I'm terrified, and it's 1000 times worse in person. The sight, you can see all the debris as building and trees are ripped out of the ground. And the sound. The sound is almost as bad
We lived just south of briarwood elementary when it went through. Got extremely lucky.
Stay safe out there.
I remember seeing it from my house, my mom shoved me in the back of the car and we drove in the opposite direction of where it was going, I remember the destruction and the sound of that thing
"WE GOT A TORNADO ON THE GROUND!!" I wish I had a dollar for every time I've heard that in these videos.
my adrenaline is pumping and i'm not even there !👍
An F-5 is grinding it's way through the town & Moore, Oklahoma.... residents just continue driving like, no big deal?!
As tornado alley residents they’re probably used to it but also likely trying to get to shelter cause your car can get picked up.
@@ebbykayyc8442 Oklahoma is a great & beautiful state! I'm glad I don't live there because it's the heart of tornado alley!
I live in Okla & I kinda like it fresh air & open spaces, all 4 seasons of weather
Not boring that’s for sure
For 10-15 minutes prior to it's arrival in Moore the media was telling people (accurately) they could not survive above ground, and if they could not get underground to get out of its way. That is why so many cars.
@@cmerton I've always heard on the Weather Channel to not get into a car to outrun a tornado?
Just the sound of it is insane
I been a storm chaser for 7 years now and a search and rescue member i just helped with search and rescue operations in iukq ms 4 days ago
Really shouldn’t be watching these videos while it’s storming outside... yet here I am. 🤦♀️
