- UPDATE: DIDN'T NEED TO LOOSEN CEOSS MEMBER. WAS ANOTHER DIFFERENTIAL SUPPORT BOLT ABOVE & BACK OF DIFFERENTIAL ONCE OUT DIFFERENTIAL MOVED FORWARD ENOUGH TO GET OIL PAN IN AND OUT. ONCE OIL PAN WAS OUT I COULD SEE IT. ACCESSED WITH A COUPLE EXTENSIONS FROM BEHIND DRIVERS WHEEB & AN ELECTRIC IMPACT DRIVER. BOLT IS THREADED.
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: OIL CROSS MEMBER BOLTS FIRST & USE AN IMPACTS & OR TAP THEM WITH A HAMMER FIRST TO LOOSEN THE RUST. ALSO I Was informed after that Only one of the 3 bolts on each end of crossmember holds it to frame! So 1st try taking only that one out & see if it will come down far enough.

I had a 2010 Commander come in my shop yesterday and Alldata told me to remove the motor, used your method and it worked.
Awesome
@@livenfree appreciate the help
After spending $40 on a cheap come a long 😂
it is better to drop the differential. remove it from the bases and disconnect the loader. remove the 2 screws from the steering jack. that's it.
So no jack is needed to support motor once crossbar is loosened
Did you unbolt the driveshaft from the front diff??? Just wondering if it will drop enough or just should I just unbolt it I think it’s 4 bolts
I removed the 4 bolts but the drive shaft never came all the way out. But it was necessary to loosen it. The key was removing bolts from front diff mount above to drivers side if i recall correctly. I had to use like 2.or 3 feet of extensions and my electric impact and loosen the bolt laying behind drivers side front wheel. Be careful too those bolts for the drive shaft into diff have lock tite on em. So turn very slowly. Id drain the diff a half cup 1st. Would have saved the mess of fluid that ran out when lossening the axle. Wasn't much but stinks when I rolled in it.
@@livenfree thanks for the reply I know it’ll rest right on the cross member I’ve had a bunch of those front diffs out to change that upper bushing they fail then clunk when Shifting gears like reverse to neutral I just never did an oil pan and was wondering about how much Access was required to get the pan out. my wife’s commander is getting real rusty starting to seep I can tell, I changed my driveshaft so I think the loctite is gone by now lol
once you take the bolts out of the crossbar, does it drops down enough to have the dust bracket come out? Did you put a jackstand to support the crossbar in order for it not to complete fall down? I was worried about it falling down with the engine. so I didn’t touch the crossbar. it took hours to take the 10mm bolts out. Now my problem is that the gasket is too stuck with the oil pan that I have to chisel to separate the two.
Seems like I had to get oil pan loose 1st b4 the shield came out. And no the cross bar won't fall its part of the engine cradle. And I used my cell phone camera to take pics or video of the edge of the oil pan to make sure I was separating in the right layer. The top. I believe I used a hammer to drive in a few different flat screw drivers and puddy knives and dragged them along the gasket tiil it was separated.
Yes I believe it took hours for me too for oil pan bolts. Make sure u got them all. I missed one or two hidden behind that dust shield. For those I Used a couple 1/4 inch extensions and swivel pieces and once broke loose I used a flexible foot long extension attached to my cordless drill.
@@livenfree I see. Thank you for the quick response!! 😊
do you remember by chance the torque of the crossbar nuts?
@@campuskorea unfortunately I don't. I just did like others i read tighten by hand till snug and then recheck once all are in. I Googled it and saw for 2001 it was 55 foot pounds.
Dang, snapped a bolt head off where the cradle's crossmember meets the control arm. Are the nuts on those spot welded or something? Thing wouldn't budge. Even now, I'd think with the head snapped off, I could push the bolt through, or turn the other side to break it free... but it isn't budging.
Ya I oiled mine first. The two that hold the A arm end in place have a bolt on top that will lift off its got a piece of metal that hangs down to keep it from rotating.
I will try to check for you tomorrow to see if it's threaded in the hole. If not id soak the crap out if it with penetrating oil like liquid wrench or pb blast over the night & then hammer up with a good awl or punch to try to drive it up & out. & u actually may not need to remove this two bolts as only one holds the cross member to the frame.
@@livenfree Much appreciated, good call on the oil overnight! I actually got the broken bolt out today, as well as the pan!! After freeing up the differential & axle as you instructed, I removed the plastic oil filter cover, which allowed me to rotate the pan sideways (shallow end toward driver-side), and there was just enough room to get it out, without having to lower the crossmember. Not a millimeter to spare, took some finessing & a few light taps to squeeze through, but it's out! Just cleaning everything up for re-assembly now. Thanks again for the great video!!
@@clankenstein76 awesome! What year model & engine size is yours?
@@livenfree mine's 2007 grand cherokee limited, 4x4 w/ 4.7 v8
I dropped the crossbar by 2-3 inches but can't get dust cover out. WHat can be the problem?
once you unbolt the oil pan, it will come out
Ya i don't think it will come out w/o loosening the oil pan
