Dude, if you want the fastest compilation times, build yourself a desktop PC and choose a great performance CPU, with lots of RAM and a really fast SSD or two. That's a whole heck of a lot harder (or maybe just 3x the price) to do with a Mac. Though maybe you can just rent the very best EC2 instance (or a few of them) for when you want to compile, and you can still be happy with your Macbook, if that's your choice.

    Hi Alex,
Can you do a clamshell mode experiment? I am particularly interested in the potential performance degredation of using any of the 'Pro' and 'Max'-tier chips on the MacBook Pros when they are being used in clamshell mode.
Some manufacturers claim that their clamshell stands are better than others because they allow for more ventilation, but I am not sure that a 200 USD+ clamshell stand is necessary if a simple, much less expensive stand for twelve south will do the job. You can run the experiment with a simple clamshell mode stand and normally without the clamshell mode stand running.
    Keep up the good work,
    Ali

@@RunForPeace-hk1cu A Sun Microsystems survey of around 20 years ago found that half of all software written was embedded. Surprisingly this led to them to designing Java for embedded software development.
The reason that most of the software industry is not aware of how much embedded software is written is because more often than not it is written by electronics engineers who both write the software and design the circuits and so are invisible to the software industry.
My main language is C followed by assembler and ADA. I have received many worried comments from none embedded software engineers that I am relying on the dead C language for my livelihood. The reality is that for every embedded C++ program there are ten embedded C program. This is because dynamic object creation is a dangerous technique to use in embedded software where there is no time for garbage collection.

Oh dear, what a revelation! Here I was, thinking my MacBook was the ultimate coding companion, only to find out it's been leading a double life as a mere fashion accessory! I suppose I'll have to inform all those countless lines of code that they were penned by a device supposedly unsuitable for programmers. But wait... does this mean I've been inadvertently challenging my MacBook all this time? Like some sort of technological daredevil, pushing it to its limits, daring it to prove its prowess in the realm of programming? Oh, the drama! The intrigue! The sheer audacity of it all! Well, I refuse to accept this preposterous notion! My MacBook and I have formed an unbreakable bond through lines of code and late-night debugging sessions. If it's not for programmers, then I must be some kind of coding sorcerer, conjuring algorithms out of thin air! But enough of this nonsense. Back to my MacBook, my trusty sidekick in the world of programming, forever defying the odds and breaking stereotypes!

It's all fun and games until you discover a ThinkPad T480... It's like a Framework 13 but 4-5x cheaper, costs only $180-230 used. The upgrades are now very cheap too, the 72Wh non-OEM battery costs like $30-40. You actually don't need a MacBook, unless you work for a big company that buys one for you and you need to compile huge projects every two minutes.

Unfortunately, N100 is barely any better than i5-8250U or higher, which can be found on ThinkPad T480. I use my ThinkPad T480 for programming and DevOps, and let me tell you, MacBooks are never getting any close to the ThinkPad's robustness, and the keyboard on the T480 is pretty amazing too. Buying M-series MacBooks is pretty much unnecessary, but not as unnecessary than buying a Framework 13 when the ThinkPad T480 exists. It's like a Framework 13 but 4-5x cheaper. RAM is upgradable to 64GB. And the upgradable batteries make the battery life superb on the T480, especially when you undervolt it. For a better screen, all it takes is to swap the panel for an IGZO low-power screen for $60, and it all can be done with one screwdriver with no special tools. You'll also get better battery life because of that.
The ThinkPad T480s and T490 onwards, however, are a disgrace. The T480 is the last of its kind. Perhaps we might really have to buy a Framework in the future........

Somewhat new to your channel, I *almost* didn't click on your video, thinking "Oh no, another troll and click-bait title." Haha, it was worth it!

But the replaceable battery wasn't that bad, you could charge it and remove it when you are connected to the wall (most of my day). And if it stops working you can buy a new one and switch over.
Same for disk and memory upgrades.
Now windows... It's something I could use for work but I have been using Linux since... Long time ago.

I've been at work all day, not one April's Fool day gag there, I'd even forgot it was the first of April. Come home, have my dinner, sit with a cup of coffee afterwards, on my new M3 MacBook Air and fire up CZcams, to relax you know, like you do... "Oh, Alex has posted a video, I've watched and liked a few of his videos, what is he saying now..." Man, you almost had me there.....

I’d even go further and say computers are not required for programming. I don’t know why we even compare and contrast.

I do all my work (web/dev rust kubernetes C# angular) in macos both for personal and professional reasons. I ditched windows in 2017 i ditched linux(except on server) in 2020. i used to be an apple hater (i still hate the soldered flash) but i have to admit that the cost of ownership is indeed much better. plus i got tired of maintening the horrible linux/windows errors

Depends on what kinds of programs the programmer's working on. For web development, definitely need closest to Unix/Linux OS to run multiple types of servers locally before deploying to staging, production servers. The Windows suck badly if you r locked up in company provided Windows laptop that does not give admin-level permissions to install most compatible software for development. Of course I'd prefer a personal Linux laptop if the market has better laptops like MacBook Pros that r efficient, quiet, long battery, great keyboards, and pretty fast. At least Mac OS is really stable compared to Windows. If affordability for not-the-fastest build is not an issue, Macs r not bad if don't mind getting a few utility apps to make up missing features that Windows can provide.

It's a disgrace what this journalist in PCWorld says about Macs. Most of his statements about Macs are simply wrong. As a software developer, I'm glad that I can use a Mac for work. My employer gave me the choice between a PC laptop and a MacBook Pro. I have never regretted my decision.
