In this video I show how to test the voltages on a switching power supply using a multimeter. We test the voltages on the power supply and also test the 5V on the game's PCB. We test the +5, 12v, and -5v. I also show how to replace the switching power supply with a new one.

This is a good video, but I just want to add one suggestion. When using a multimeter probe on a circuit board, it's safer to wrap the probe with tape so that only the tip is exposed. That way there's less risk of accidentally shorting 2 adjacent pins on a chip. If that happens while the board is powered it can cause significant damage.
19:59 that sound effect was really well timed.
great vid, its nice to see more ins and outs of arcade machines, ive learnt alot from your
vids, your the reason i built mame arcade machine! in 2011
Excellent vid John!
I am not annoyed in the slightest. Thank you for sharing this video because it is exactly what I was looking for. By all means, film everything you do.
Dylan Sunkel Awesome! Glad it helped. :)
Great videos! Learning a lot from you!
Hi John - it was a great howto, I got very useful informations about wiring of the PSU. I'm working on my Neo-Geo cab restoration, and will change the molex PC ATX PSU back to original PSU-s, including all of the cable rewiring, so... thanks!
great video ! please do more like this i am just starting to learn all this arcade fixing stuff and this video has helped allot thanks
awesome video as usual! im completely ok with you posting videos on everything you do :) altho i dont have an arcade machine yet, its still interesting to see what goes on...i can only imagine how hard it would be for an arcade owner!
So far this has fixed my issue but it has only been one day. :) Time will tell! I remember the "comb trick" my friends used to do BITD. I should try one of these tricks now! :)
what was driving me nuts was what to connect the fg too and just made it so easy. i just got done with my power board and this was last thing i needed, thanks... and i did get a 120v shock too trying to install a toggle switch but got that fixed too from reading bob robers data and another site some guy did on wordpress but had better resolution pictures
Thanks for the Vid , dood...this just totally helped me save my Victory Road machine.
Awesome video, thanks.
Good call on filming any repairs, I'm thinking I should do the same when I finally get around to working on some of my machines.
Hi John, great tutorial on changing an Arcade power supply i found it very informative, I only wished i had watched it first before i decide to change my old power supply in my Galag88 to a new Switch mode power supply as i blew the transformer up,
dam. I certainly wont be blowing another one up now. thanks...
the roads and other background elements on my outrun and turbo outrun arcade cab go crazy. The self test i did said all the roms and ram chips were good so i'm guessing its the power supply. Also plugged the pcb into a computer monitor and same results. I'll test it later. I hope this is all it needs.
Great video ! To be super safe ( I am not an electrician ) , how do you test the outer Chassis to make sure its not live ? Just put one test probe on the chassis and the other probe on the ground terminal ? ( with the multimeter set to DC i guess ) Thanks
Thanks, these are helpful video's. i'am not annoyed!!!,I always learn from your videos.Look forward to more vids. Curious...So did this solve your problems with sound on Track & Field? As kids we would play this game with a butter knife on buttons, to run.Yeah,,, crazy huh,it works though.Makes you run crazy fast! Spent many quarters in this one.later ..
Awesome video! I'm in the process of ordering my very first Jamma kit and this is exactly what I was looking for ! Keep the videos coming!
I wish you would make a video about comparing Digital multimeters.
Which you would recommend at different price points.
What features are useful
Which are the better brands etc.
Great video. Why is an adapter needed though when converting from a game with a power supply and a linear power supply to a new switching power supply? Can't I just open up the linear power supply and connect those wires to the appropriate lugs on the new switching power supply?
curtislv426 I have the same question!
that tron machine is beautiful
I got a more modern cheap psu but it didn't have a neg 5 volts. Is there a way to get neg 5v out of it. If I'm correct I need the neg 5v for games like double dragon. Thanks 👍
@johnsarcadegarage I have a mortal kombat 2 cab and the following are my readings on the power supply. 12v reads 13.45, +5v is at 5.00 and -5v is at 4.75. Are these within reasonable range? Thanks!
John, i'm total NOOB here with very little electrical knowledge : so two SILVER boxes in on the right side of the floor panel is the transformer for the monitor (the bigger silver box) and the smaller silver box is the AC / ground coming from the wall right ?
I have an Asteroids, everything original including the Big Blue Cap, is mine a linear psu? Mine are not labeled, I guess I should go thru it and write down all the current powers in case it goes out in the future?
I used to carry a comb in my back pocket and use that back in the day.
You just helped me again! After tracing through a galaxian cab I just picked up with the multimeter, I found the problem: A blown fuse! It's a 125V Buss MDL-2 fuse, Should I replace it with an exact copy ordered online or can I use some other kind of fuse?
That's the -5V wire from the JAMMA harness. I purposely do not have that hooked up since Track and Field does not require it!
I got my Chase HQ upright up and running with a new power supply but the screen is flipped upside down..? Would you know if there is a switch of some sort or something I could do to fix this? I looked everywhere but couldn't see anything. Thx
Oh! Good luck with that .-. By the way, do you have Killer instinct I or II for arcade? this game is awesome. .-.
thanks 4 vid,i stil have a problem my arcade machine seems to have power around hole unit exept for screen and also sound wat could be rong
I will update my site soon! I'm a little behind! :)
Hi, Need help question
I want to test my power supply on my super duper casino. I have the radio shack 24 digital multimeter 22-805 where do i put the dail on the V- - - ??
to test the AC
Odd decorations down there. George from Seinfeld and a Twilight cardboard cutout at 21:17
but the soft 15hz menu was greyed out and i used powerstrip following instructions from a webpage that says that you can plug it once powerstrip (from windows) gives you the 15hz
The power supply can cause games to do all sorts of problems, I always check the voltage on PSU 1st. I remember one time it was causing my Vs. SMB to run in slow mode just being off a couple of volts.
Nice vid, about the European power, that's 230v ;-)
NICE GOOD.
I need a little help I have a 1978 all original space invader says cabinet number 808 when I turn it on there's white dots they go away you can play for a while but the game will start acting up and I want to service this game the last another 40 years any help would be appreciated
hi John my cab malfunctioned when i was trying to plug a pc to jamma adaptor i get on ebay :( now i plug the game board back in and it wont start
do you think it could be the power supply?
Did you plug it in backwards?!?
I always thought this switching power supplies look like PC-PSU's?
So the there are switching ones that looks like the old ones and directly bolt in?
+Hirthirthirt yes. The typical ones used in older games are still being made like the one shown in this video. You can also use PC style.
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
Could you do a video how to prepare an ATX-PSU for the use in an arcade game?
I think people are interested in this. Are the direct replacement-switching-PSU's shown in this video chinese products? If so I rather would go with an ATX-style PSU's.
I think we can do this. :)
At 17:45 you have a loose blue wire nearly under the power supply, I presume you know that though. Not sure where the wire came from because you hadn't started to take the remaining wires off the old supply yet.
i always wondered what´s the difference between 5v and -5v is o.o
damn havent seen a nike fuel band in a good minute.
I replaced my power supply on my offroad challenge and the new one failed immediately The game gives a loud boop steering wheel moves for a split second and then nothing except some humming from speakers. Any idea what could cause this?
+Chad Bauch short?
Sure was. Found it in the driver board so I ordered new one.
When I have my big apartment I'm going to have a bunch of them
Test the AC? Put the multimeter on AC! :)
I have that Mario game at my house :)
I smashed my nail with a chair. Long story.... :)
no i plug it red with red yellow with yellow
Mine started smoking! I had to unplug it!
Never a switch mode PSU is more reliable than a linear. Linear PSUs are always, even with many years on top of them, from far the most reliable PSUs in every equipment possible. The only thing is that they occupy more physical space but they are very superior quality too and have less components to fail. It's basically a transformer, rectifier capacitors and maybe some regulaters and one or 2 power transistors and some pot to fine tune voltages. So, you said that switching PSUs are more reliable and you are a little bit wrong. It's not a metter of opinion. It's facts.
I want 220v :)
I just paid a guy to fix my Pacman/Galaga Machine. He said it was a fuse. Charged me 200! Got it home no power and fuse was blown again. What can I do to find out what is causing a fuse to blow? Power going in is correct
www.fixyourpacman.com/pacman-fuse-power-repair/
try that link it might help you
to be able to touch a live main connector on that PSU whats really bad design
you wear alot of jewlery
what's happened with your nail? .-.
Americans... using an electric screwdriver really ?? Only u people do that actually ^^ Nice vid tho ;)
