In this video I show the basics of soldering including what type of soldering iron I use (Weller WTCPT), what type of soldering iron tip to use (Weller PTP7), what type of solder to use (60% lead), what desoldering tool I use (soldapullt), how to use a multimeter (I use a FLUKE) to check continuity between soldering connections, how to properly insert a capacitor while observing polarity, and more! Please be careful when you are doing this as soldering irons are hot and can burn you and the solder fumes are TOXIC! You have been warned!

"Personally, I like the fumes." That needs to be on a shirt, John. Thanks for the video :)
Thank you for doing this video. Extremely informative and easy to understand. You're a great teacher!
Love your channel, man! So much great info all in one place!
Thanks John. Getting started with this whole repairing 👨🔧 arcades thing. Appreciate the 101 groundwork tutorial. (even in 480p)
The adding solder trick is essential in desoldering old joints. It REALLY helps.
Thanks for the tips. Great video as always.
Love the video John! Great stuff!
Great video, very engaging and interesting. Thanks for the tips!
I used a solder sucker like yours for years... one day I bought the radioshack de-soldering iron with the intent of modding it into a cheap hot-air rework station... I test it out as a de-soldering iron... it will CHANGE YOUR LIFE, or at least the way you remove components lol. the difference between the sucker and the iron is like the difference between a cheap iron and a weller station. and it's only $12... worth every penny.
Thanks--this is the best video I've seen of this on CZcams.
~ Never get rid of any of your videos ~ EVER...!!!!
WHY WOULD I. :)
~ Hiya Johnny Boy ~ Hey man, I am just doing some preventive maintenance. Wanted to share how much I enjoy them. I don't have time to watch every day, but I have watched the Gyrus restore & I am currently watching Jump Bug... I've also watched the DK 100k attempt video several times fur tips. So far I'm topping out at 93k - those damn Springs get me - what's the trick? 2 short ones, then a long one..?
I miss the AO Podcast ~ just wanted to send some well wishes.
Bee Well,
Francis J. Fox
Boop boop boop eeeeeehhhhh reminds me of the arcades back in the days... Lol you alwas heard that in arcades!
Great video, and extremely helpful tutorial.
Great tutorial man!
Thank you so much for this video tutorial. I just picked up a near perfect Zaxxon for $90 for my home arcade and it has the expected sound board issue with the 13 cheap ass caps that need replacing. I have never soldered and I really want to take care of this project myself. Thank you so much for the aid!
Thanks for sharing! I needed this.
Nice and simply explained, thanks
Awesome video! :)
Holy crap dude, how many red bulls did you drink before making this video?
All of them!
Thanks, much! Glad I could help!
You're welcome! Glad I could help. :D
Thanks, bro! I appreciate it! :)
Thanks, man! :)
great to see a Weller. Those are top of the line soldering stations
You know, I never used one of those de-soldering irons. I really like the soldapullt, it really has served me well. Maybe someday I'll check one out!
i have a weller soldering gun from 80's or maybe 70's it was my Grampa soldering iron
I used to love soldering and tinkering with electronics when I was in high school, I think I'm still okay at it but this is a great refresher video. I also really like the fumes, I'm not sure what that says about me. Also to anyone first learning how to solder be prepared to burn yourself a couple times.
Thanks for the video, appreciate it so much. You're a real funny guy hahah nice video :)
one of your game line filters is shorting to earth. Those filters are usually a couple of X or Y type capacitors and a filter choke. Over this side of the pond I used to collect JPM fruit machines, they had the same filters , and it caused the same issue.
No flux given.
Lol underrated comment
Yes, I can do this too! Stay tuned.
Awesome video. Im starting to solder stuff and this helped out alot. The video camera you got now is better lol still a great video though.
+slayer768 Yeah, I have evolved. It's funny to watch these old videos. :)
Weller FTW!
The moon patrol had a bad diode in the red section of the monitor chassis. After I replaced that it was all fixed!
Your welcome buddy!! Have just fixed the monitor from hell myself. Epoxy glue is great for reinsulating traces btw.
I can't really read all the detail on the packet for the tips in your video but every Weller tip I have ever bought says Lead-free on it, do you know whether it makes a difference? And also does your packet have this written on it? Thanks!
Requesting a video about how to use flux and show a clear view of sucking up the solder (view was obstructed in this video). I'll probably check out your forum because I'm sure you've got some trade going on there and I'm interested in taking part.
aslo, I have had really good success with the cheapo Radio Shack de-soldering iron. I have a good Weller for soldering, but the RS de-soldering iron is great.
There's an old joke that the cheese grater you were using was marketed by the Johnson band aid company... lol : )
Great idea John, been waiting for this since you mentioned you were thinking about doing a vid on soldering, but I'm having problems with the video, playback just completely quits after 1-2 mins. Anyone else having this problem?
Thanks for that tutorial! ive been waiting for something like this. it has been very useful.
by the way.. what was the problem with moonpatrol? did you fix it?
Oh, I see what you mean. One of my games is shorting the breaker. I guess it's possible. My electrician came out today and replaced the breaker. It's all fixed... for now! :)
this irons temp is controlled by the tip they have 600,700,800 degree tips---only use weller tips----they have 41 different tips in the catalog....same iron i have and it has never let me down.....
+Todd Hayslett Yeah, I love the iron. It's GREAT.
I also highly recommend a de-soldering iron. You'll wonder how you survived without one. SOOO much better than the sucker. You only need one hand as well, versus one hand with the iron and another with the sucker.
I think I got mine at Radio Shack for $20-30. Works great for me.
He now has one.
it could be any one of them . Im mabye assuming too much here, but where your power cord comes in , usually , at least over here, the cord goes into a line filter before it goes to the power supply. A clue will be in what breaker pops. Is it the same bank of machines that goes off every time? thatll help you narrow it down.
Yes it can be fixed. Usually you fix it by adding a "jumper" wire connecting the points that were disconnected by the broken trace.
Holy SHIT bro... You remind me of a guy that had a shop behind my buddy's motorcycle shop. Dude did all the electrical work and whatnot, tinkered with all sorts of shit. Mainly musical stuff, speakers and so on. But I swear, he could pass as your father. From the tinkering electrical work, the way you describe and talk about the work and always being at 11+. Talking at 1000 MPH and seeming like he just drank 20 energy drinks... lol ...Dude was a laugh. He _could_ be annoying at times, but hey, so can everyone. I would prefer someone who's excited and into what they're doing and describing rather than someone who doesn't seem to give a crap... Good on ya mate.
Thanks, Mike. :)
Fantastic video! I'm going to change out the caps on my Tempest WG 6100 and install the LV2000 Light board and I had a question about solder diameter. I can only find Super Solder 60/40 with 0.8mm diameter. Does 0.8 work as well as 1mm? I can't find Super Solder in 1mm anywhere.
0.8mm solder is perfectly fine. It's all personal preference really.
possibly just a burned out breaker then , that can happen.
any of your mates got a hantarex mtc9000 chassis?
That's me. :)
also you might want to give small chisel tips a try. or even the chisel tip that comes with the wes51, which is almost a cross between conical and chisel. for many applications especially circuit boards, a chisel tip is going to spread heat much easier and quicker due to a wider area of contact. you dont want to go too big though. in not sure the stock wes51 tips name but I really would recomend not using conical for circuit boards.
if you are using temperature control and trying to keep the temperature as low as necessary, a chisel tip is going to be better too. the conical tip needs more heat to heat the component anthe metal ring.
especially if dealing with large components, chisel tips are going to be advantageous. on boards with tiny little "slots" for the components, it may oberhang a little, but because you have a lower temperature you wont burn the board. and you could always use the side of the chisel
Hey John. What happened to your TOM? Did you sell it?
I hope you take all of those rings off when dealing with mains power and HV circuitry.
Yeah, my thumb has been a trainwreck lately! :)
Nice video for noobs like me. Blkdog 4 life!
What are you referring to? Which game? What do you mean? :)
I did my best to show the "sucking" part. Not sure I'll redo it. :)
Yes, I did sell it. I kind of got bored of it kind of quick. :(
Much coca cola and cofee haha
when working with circuit boards you should have a temperature control iron. you havent burned anything yet, but some boards burn far easier then others. i assume you dont have the soldering instructions and temperature/time rating for each specific board so just my opinion. and for others to think about
I love my iron. it's never let me down
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Yeah!!! I love my WTCPT too. If you know how to handle the iron properly, it's kind of impossible to burn any board, 'cause you don't need to touch it at all. Have you tried using paste solder with this Weller? Damn, it's a new concept for soldering, it's like compare a manual gear with automatic.
Isn't the soldering paste bad for working on electronics with it? Since it's conductive? I've never used one and I don't rly know if there are really any benefits with the paste. Could you share more?
All soldering material is very conductive, otherwise, wouldn't be any reason to use it. When you use soldering paste to get the job done, you must use tweezers and a proper applicator (one that fits ok in your hands), you're gonna assemble all the components on the board and the last thing to do is just pass the iron over the edges. Is faster and easier, than hold the component, the solder wire and the iron all together.
Xiru Litorano
Well, what you just wrote makes me go and buy some paste to try it, at least it cost around 1$. Thank you!
I have a RadioShack iron, and the only problem I ever had with it is that the tips disintegrate super easily with lots of use
It's a 50 watt adjustable temperature iron. Probably could get it around 30 bucks nowadays, pretty reliable.
Again, the tips suck.
Probably should've watched the entire video before my last post... :P
Conical!? Try the chisel tip. It will CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
I have. I like the small tip
Can I work for you? I just learned so much
That soldering iron is 143 bucks do I need to go that expensive? I am just recapping a Donkey Kong and maybe another game?
I have heard this one is ok www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=15725446 -- just don't buy a cheap $5.00 one.
What's a radio shack? 😏😭
The video is about 20 minutes long and it's def' all there. I have checked.
Now can I add RAM to my ps3
It’s Soul Der not sodder jeez
As an avionics tech, the sponge is better. Get a water bottle to store with your station. I've been soldering together aircraft radios and harnesses for over a decade and have tried everything - water actually helps clean the tip of the soldering iron better than anything else. I've used the same tip on the same iron you use for literally 8 years - never had to re-tin the iron. Just wanting to pass on some knowledge.
+Derrick Proctor interesting. I find the sponge and water to be such a hassle. But you might be right!
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Yeah the sponge removes heavy oxidation from the tip better.
Just keep one of these filled with distilled water and you won't have any issues with the sponge drying out. www.amazon.com/dp/B00WTHLR0E/
Another thing I've noticed from your videos is that you leave the iron on for your whole intro into what your doing and when you're not at the bench. I recommend not doing this. Leaving your iron on like this makes the tip oxidize faster and overall shortens its life. When you get up and walk away from the bench make it a habit of turning your iron off. Besides with a soldering station like the one you have it takes less than a minute to reach soldering temperature.
that iron isnt really that great. once that dies you should buy a weller wes51. or weller wesd51 if you want to spend another 40 dollars for no reason
Great Video but...this leads me to my next point kids....Don't smoke crack.
Seriously, you did a good job but lay off of the caffeine.
1000 mile per hour, this dude... :)
Dude, your thumb is always busted up in these videos, lol. What's the deal?
You couldn't have used a more terrible camera. Better camera optics for the next video plz
