    In this video I show the basics of soldering including what type of soldering iron I use (Weller WTCPT), what type of soldering iron tip to use (Weller PTP7), what type of solder to use (60% lead), what desoldering tool I use (soldapullt), how to use a multimeter (I use a FLUKE) to check continuity between soldering connections, how to properly insert a capacitor while observing polarity, and more! Please be careful when you are doing this as soldering irons are hot and can burn you and the solder fumes are TOXIC! You have been warned!

    I used a solder sucker like yours for years... one day I bought the radioshack de-soldering iron with the intent of modding it into a cheap hot-air rework station... I test it out as a de-soldering iron... it will CHANGE YOUR LIFE, or at least the way you remove components lol. the difference between the sucker and the iron is like the difference between a cheap iron and a weller station. and it's only $12... worth every penny.

    one of your game line filters is shorting to earth. Those filters are usually a couple of X or Y type capacitors and a filter choke. Over this side of the pond I used to collect JPM fruit machines, they had the same filters , and it caused the same issue.

    it could be any one of them . Im mabye assuming too much here, but where your power cord comes in , usually , at least over here, the cord goes into a line filter before it goes to the power supply. A clue will be in what breaker pops. Is it the same bank of machines that goes off every time? thatll help you narrow it down.

  • @Johnsarcade
    @Johnsarcade  Před 11 lety

    Yes it can be fixed. Usually you fix it by adding a "jumper" wire connecting the points that were disconnected by the broken trace.

    Holy SHIT bro... You remind me of a guy that had a shop behind my buddy's motorcycle shop. Dude did all the electrical work and whatnot, tinkered with all sorts of shit. Mainly musical stuff, speakers and so on. But I swear, he could pass as your father. From the tinkering electrical work, the way you describe and talk about the work and always being at 11+. Talking at 1000 MPH and seeming like he just drank 20 energy drinks... lol ...Dude was a laugh. He _could_ be annoying at times, but hey, so can everyone. I would prefer someone who's excited and into what they're doing and describing rather than someone who doesn't seem to give a crap... Good on ya mate.

    Fantastic video! I'm going to change out the caps on my Tempest WG 6100 and install the LV2000 Light board and I had a question about solder diameter. I can only find Super Solder 60/40 with 0.8mm diameter. Does 0.8 work as well as 1mm? I can't find Super Solder in 1mm anywhere.

    • @Johnsarcade

    also you might want to give small chisel tips a try. or even the chisel tip that comes with the wes51, which is almost a cross between conical and chisel. for many applications especially circuit boards, a chisel tip is going to spread heat much easier and quicker due to a wider area of contact. you dont want to go too big though. in not sure the stock wes51 tips name but I really would recomend not using conical for circuit boards.
    if you are using temperature control and trying to keep the temperature as low as necessary, a chisel tip is going to be better too. the conical tip needs more heat to heat the component anthe metal ring.

    • @ThatSB
      @ThatSB Před 8 lety

      especially if dealing with large components, chisel tips are going to be advantageous. on boards with tiny little "slots" for the components, it may oberhang a little, but because you have a lower temperature you wont burn the board. and you could always use the side of the chisel

    when working with circuit boards you should have a temperature control iron. you havent burned anything yet, but some boards burn far easier then others. i assume you dont have the soldering instructions and temperature/time rating for each specific board so just my opinion. and for others to think about

    • @fhautomacao2197
      @fhautomacao2197 Před 8 lety

      +John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Yeah!!! I love my WTCPT too. If you know how to handle the iron properly, it's kind of impossible to burn any board, 'cause you don't need to touch it at all. Have you tried using paste solder with this Weller? Damn, it's a new concept for soldering, it's like compare a manual gear with automatic.

    • @JoJanDiezel
      @JoJanDiezel Před 8 lety

      Isn't the soldering paste bad for working on electronics with it? Since it's conductive? I've never used one and I don't rly know if there are really any benefits with the paste. Could you share more?

    • @fhautomacao2197
      @fhautomacao2197 Před 8 lety

      All soldering material is very conductive, otherwise, wouldn't be any reason to use it. When you use soldering paste to get the job done, you must use tweezers and a proper applicator (one that fits ok in your hands), you're gonna assemble all the components on the board and the last thing to do is just pass the iron over the edges. Is faster and easier, than hold the component, the solder wire and the iron all together.

    As an avionics tech, the sponge is better. Get a water bottle to store with your station. I've been soldering together aircraft radios and harnesses for over a decade and have tried everything - water actually helps clean the tip of the soldering iron better than anything else. I've used the same tip on the same iron you use for literally 8 years - never had to re-tin the iron. Just wanting to pass on some knowledge.

    • @Johnsarcade
      @Johnsarcade  Před 7 lety +2

      +Derrick Proctor interesting. I find the sponge and water to be such a hassle. But you might be right!

    • @mman454
      @mman454 Před 7 lety

      John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Yeah the sponge removes heavy oxidation from the tip better.
      Just keep one of these filled with distilled water and you won't have any issues with the sponge drying out. www.amazon.com/dp/B00WTHLR0E/
      Another thing I've noticed from your videos is that you leave the iron on for your whole intro into what your doing and when you're not at the bench. I recommend not doing this. Leaving your iron on like this makes the tip oxidize faster and overall shortens its life. When you get up and walk away from the bench make it a habit of turning your iron off. Besides with a soldering station like the one you have it takes less than a minute to reach soldering temperature.
