    In this video we'll work some more on the power issues of this cabinet.
    In this video I'll show how to install the Arcade Shop MCR switching power supply adapter. This adapter works with all the MCR games including Tron, Tapper, Root Beer Tapper, Domino Man, Timber, Satan's Hollow, Discs of Tron, Journey, Whacko, and more! I'll show how to hook it up to power and install it in the cabinet. I'll show how to test voltages on the PCB board and on the power supply and how to properly adjust the voltages.
    We'll also talk about the filter caps, hum bar, fuses, and more.
    We're getting close!
    The MCR switching power supply adapter can be purchased at www.arcadeshop.com

    Thought I'd share a story with you John.... Growing up in the 80's my buddy's grandfather owned an arcade.... It was in a rougher part of town and near the end was just a hangout for underage drinking and a lot of drug dealing went on there. By 1986 there was a lot of pressure on him to close the doors and since it was getting run down and not making any money he did just that....closed the doors and moved to Florida... It sat exactly the way it was left from 1986 until last week when he passed away, We went in and everything was still the way it was... Pop cans still on the tables... Ash trays with butts in them.... Even a vending machine with snacks still in it... There were about 40 Cabinets... 2 pool tables... And about 8 pinball machines

      This would of made an awesome video. Very 'window to the past'. How often do you see a business just shut it's doors at the end of the day and not to be opened for decades just the way it was? Cool story

    Personally, I think having Street Fighter II (original or otherwise) helps complete your arcade. I guess I just remember the popularity of it and how fun it was, and seeing it sitting with your other cabinets gives me that warm fuzzing feeling. lol
    I love the classic, golden age cabinets, but I just don't connect to them as much because I didn't start going to the arcades until I was 10 years old in 1986. I had a play date kind of thing with my cousins and I was in another part of the mall for kids to play in, but when my older cousin and his friend let me tag a long with them after we were done, they took me in the arcade and we played the original "Rampage" ... I was SERIOUSLY hooked, and I couldn't stop thinking about going back! So yeah, I love games like Double Dragon, Rampage, Golden Axe, Final Fight, Street Fighter II. But, if I ever got into collecting, I would have classics mixed in with cabinets I grew up with, for sure!
    Thanks for the video, John! I find something really relaxing about watching these, guess my love for the old arcade experience and preserving these games is what I like about them! I'm sure it's not ALWAYS relaxing working on them, but man, its gotta feel good once you solve and fix a problem and you have a smooth running machine!

    Dude - you are awesome to keep posting such helpful videos. I've been thinking about doing a MCR on my Tron, but wasn't sure what was involved, so now that I've seen this, I might go ahead and do it. Thanks for all the work/effort you put into keeping us informed and empowered.

      No problem thanks for keeping me entertained. If your ever in the Binghamton NY area you've gotta check out Robot City Arcade. They boast over 70 arcade games and pins mostly retro. They are a pretty new place and I feel real fortunate to even have an arcade in the area as we hadn't had much for over a decade.

    Hey John - the sides are pretty good. I am not sure I would repaint it but maybe just do some touch ups if you can. But overall I think you have a nice solid cab. Great job on the switcher. I always wanted how to do that and now I know. Thanks! Great job!!

    @10100rsn Před 9 lety

    Yes, the reset circuit on the original PSU board has a circuit that releases the reset on the CPU once the 5V rail hits somewhere over 5V and stays there for a certain period. If the PSU doesn't reach that 5V and stay there under load then the reset line is never released. And if the PSU is not able to reach 5V under load then there is either too much power being drawn from the CPU board or not enough power being supplied by the transformer and filter caps. So the reset circuit should be fine since it is doing its job, but the giant ancient power caps are probably loading down the transformer or have gone open circuit forcing a 60Hz hum into the power rails. That new power supply should be more than enough to power it all, though. Looking forward to watching the rest. ;)

    and i would just clean the sides on camera its looking well.

    @allrock1238 Před 4 lety +1

    MCR games are "very sensitive" to ripple noise on there power supply bus rails and often run into issues with hum bars , image tearing , and hum in the audio,, because there circuits where designed for linear power supply output and have no filtering in place for dealing with power noise and floating grounds , spy hunter in particular will have hum in the Audio if you don't put a 10.000 mf filter cap on the switchers 12 volt output ,, between 12 volts and ground , some switching power supply adapters for MCR games don't have enough filtering and the issue pops up.

  • @galacticgames1649
    @galacticgames1649 Před 10 lety

    Just a thought would it be possible to remove the tabs on the adapter to prevent a possible short. Do you also plan to add stand-offs on the board just to make it stable.

    I've got no transformer in the bottom of my spy hunter and I've got a molex that needs ac going to monitor and sound board etc. If I cut the molex off, what do I connect to?

  • @commandtheline
    @commandtheline Před 10 lety

    I have no reservations about using modern switching supplies either. However, as you mentioned, quality plays a crucial factor in selecting a switching power supply. I'll run out a switcher that is working until I suspect a problem, then I usually replace it with that same Happ model. There is of course an argument for authenticity... but really, who is going to know besides us, lol. Does the MCR adapter have holes for mounting? I would be a little concerned by the weight of the harness pulling down on that card. You could also add a cable strap near to card to relief it a bit.

    I've never played this game and it sounded a lot like a cheesy money-maker like when a game is released specifically for a movie or something.

    Hey John! I'm having the same problem getting 12V from my MCR adapter too. It's on a Tron arcade, the power supply is putting out 5V and 12V, the MCR adapter has 5V but not 12V. I've also bought another power supply and MCR adapter and I'm having the same 12V issue with them as well. Could you please help me and tell me what's going on?

    Hello i relly like your videos and your arcade collection im new to arcades of owning one so i know very little about them thats why i watch alot of video but i have a little issue now that im not sure how to fix it maybe you can help me out please.
    You see i had a showcase arcade cab i got from ebay but it was empty and sice i love tekken i decided to get tekkes pcbs and i got 1 to 4 but the the tekken 4 i could make it to work so i dicided not to put it in the cab.
    I place all tekkens inside the cab got a rgb to tv adapter and a pc power supply and it worked perfectly.
    Last week i decided to get a switching power supply so it can look more like a real arcade in the inside and i got a power supply on ebay but since im new im not sure if every power supply works in just any game. So i got this power supply and i plug every thing and by the time i get to hook the ac power coming in i just got it from the wall outlet and when i turn it on i got pucture but some lines shows on the screen and the sound was not good.
    Now my question is did i get the right power supply and hook it up the right way by getting the ac streak from the wall???
    or the power supply does not flow the right voltage for the pcbs i dont have a power meater to check now but this is what the pcbs requiare
    +5v /2.5A minnimun
    +12v /2A minnimun
    The power supply output is
    +5v /16A
    +12 /4A
    Is this power supply good for this type of games
    If it is good maybe my wirering is not good
    Can you help me please

  • @Four_X
    @Four_X Před 10 lety

    Nice one john
    I like how you have used a modern arcade switching power supply
    I don't like them old briefcase units they look like 1950s technology
    and might fail or worse catch fire anytime.
    when I'm restoring a arcade cab I try to keep the outside as original
    as possible including the control panel controls but bring the inside
    of the cab into the 21st century especially the PSU as I bet the
    arcade switching power supply will output better power than that
    briefcase unit ever could also it's less hassle to replace if the
    arcade switching power supply does fails.
