This is Episode 1 of WatchAdvisor's look behind the scenes at the Panerai HQ in Neuchâtel. In a series of several 4K-videos we will show you how a Panerai watch is manufactured. To ensure the highest level of quality, in early 2014 Panerai opened its new Manufacture in Neuchâtel, a significantly larger building with greater resources than the previous Manufacture opened in 2002. A completely new structure, in both form and substance, featuring more than 10,000 square metres of space where about 250 people carry out their specialist work. This new setting brings together all the main operations and technical skills needed to create a Panerai and it is the place where the technical and innovative spirit of the brand is best expressed, nurtured by the centuries-old Swiss tradition in the field.
At the Panerai HQ in Neuchâtel we had the opportunity to look behind the scenes:

movement fabrication,
case + movement assembly,
testing and quality control,
plus research & development...

Just wanted to thank you for the videos, as after watching your Neuchatel videos I decided to apply to visit manufacture. And on 22nd February my wife and I participated in a Manufacture tour. What was amazing is that the tour was private. I was expecting to be a part of a group of people, but we had a totally private tour, two of us+representative of the Geneva boutique that organized it for us. We went through all of the parts that you covered in your videos, we even had a 4 course lunch in a private room and a masterclass in calibre disassembly. I wasn’t just blown away by hospitality, but beyond that I was so amazed that for me there is now no other watch brand after this. Ok, in all honesty for me Panerai was always something else, as other than being just a watch it’s also a sculpture on a wrist, but after this tour and millions of questions answered by the patient people at Manufacture I’m a full on fundementalist lover of Panerai😃. Again just a spectacular experience and it all started with your videos. And I’m not a multi Panerai collector, just a regular guy who came to apply in Geneva botique while leaving my watch there for a service. 👍🏻👍🏻

He told me that you were not nice either and the worst thing is, that the beef took place at a public event you were just invitees. In fact you disrupted Breitling’s celebration of a legend event. I mean you can disagree with somebody, you can even take against somebody, but don‘t forget to be respectful.
Hope you both will find a way to work out your differences of opinion.

Thanks for sharing our passion and your thoughts with us! I have been explaining the use of external partners to produce various components of watches already in other comments … In brief: yes, the industry always relied on external specialists/manufacturers. This will never change and NO ONE does everything in-house. Only over motivated marketing departments, having no clue how this industry really works, spread such news. Therefore the expectation of customers is high and lots of misleading information is added on top. The next episodes will show more details about how a Panerai is manufactured and give you again the chances to make up your mind…
Perezcope is simply “click farming” by throwing stones at one of the only manufacturers with a passionate and vocal client base.
I have no time for people who line their pockets by only throwing criticism at the people who actually create something.
Thank you Alexander for taking the time to visit Panarai HQ and give us a glimpse of what Panarai is about today. It seems to me that they are on the cutting edge and are working to make their products better in spite of contrstraints from the mother ship. That being said, I feel that Panarai is just a polarizing brand. Very few people are on the fence. They are either loved unconditionally by there fans or hated and put down by the rest. They beat to a different drum and they are certainly different than all of the other brands that copy each other and work to improve on each others technology. That is why they are a romantic brand. They hold true to their heritage and where they came from. Like it or hate it, people respect that. Case in point Rolex. What makes them great is marketing and very little change over 70 years. They have all closed case backs and added new movements. I never hear people wondering if they downgraded. The open sapphire case back offers nothing functionally. It is all marketing and aesthetics. It does add thickness which is why I think Rolex stays with a boring closed case back. People love a thinner attractive sports watch. I own 3 Rolex watches. A 126610LN, 16710 “Pepsi from 2007, and a 116710LN from 2020. All very nice watches and all keep excellent time. Past that they are just tool watches with a very strong brand status. I also own 2 Omega Seamaster 300M white and black dial watches with open case backs. Again very tough tool watches that keep great time but have an open case back. Finally, I own a Panerai 1312 from June 2021 with closed caseback and no hacking. It is my coolest looking most complimented watch I wear that also keeps incredible time. I buy these watches for me and I can tell you that over the past few years I have learned to respect Rolex, but had the chance to understand that they are just another good watch with status. I prefer to wear my Panerai and my Omegas much more because there is no stigma and most people are curious, if at all, in a positive way. I will say nobody has every asked to see my caseback, the movement, or question the timekeeping of my watches. They compliment how it looks and that is it. I am in this addictive hobby to learn about horology and respect how awesome mechanical watch making is. It is one of the coolest things we do as humans vs most every other manufacturing we do. The basic technology is hundreds of years old and is still so relevant today. I really enjoy your content and thank you for the information and the entertainment. I hope that the haters will continue to enjoy the differences in all the brands and respect peoples choices. If they watched these episodes, that Panerai is in such high demand that they can barely keep up. Great brand, with high quality standards and hopefully in future episodes Alexander is going to prove that!!

Thank you for the video, very well done. However nobody has mentioned the removal of the hacking seconds from the P9010, cheaper finishing and prices constantly going up. I’d love to buy another new PAM but simply I don’t see the value for money anymore, compared to other brands.

I love Panerai. I think it has an iconic design…one of the best! I don’t care if it has an in-house movement or not…this won’t affect my love towards the brand. As you mentioned, its normal practice in the industry that even top watch manufacturers may use part or even the full movement from other manufacturers and that is okay. The issue is when Panerai states that a movement is in-house and in fact it’s an ETA as you confirmed in a previous comment (on the chronograph)... And that’s not okay! They even removed the term ‘in-house’ movement after this was discovered and published online and on social media platform. You can have the best quality control and manufacturing process, but it takes 1 or a few instances of these to hinder the company’s credibility. And with Panerai there are many more instances like these.
I find it immature that this is the approach the company takes to start fixing their image by this pretty biased video. I think it will attract more attention to their previous mistakes. Especially that you clearly state that the intension of this video is to clear out ‘the rumors and stupid things being published’. It would have been better if this was video was just a simple documentary on Panerai’s headquarters rather than having this defensive, trying to prove something tone that is portrayed through-out.
I really hope Panerai takes strategic action towards the previous drops that have happened in the past. Till then my love for the brand will still persist.

This was a statement that I personally made after having seen what they are capable to do in Neuchâtel… No one told me to say this… but I felt it is necessary to mention it and to show that lots of things said,communicated simply aren’t true, but just meaningless… I do not regret have said it and I would do it again… just also watch the next videos and make up your mind… By the way: the issue with that wrong communication about the ETA calibre and the DD module was unnecessary and Itold them loud and clear…
@@WatchAdvisor So far, I believe that this video has done more harm than good for Panerai. It backfired! It has attracted so many negative comments. You started replying to these comments with a defensive approach, but it seems to have got so overwhelming that you subtly started admitting/agreeing to Panerai’s fallouts: you started stating in the comments things like okay “mistakes happen”, “[wrong communication was] unnecessary…I told them loud and clear” or “Panerai is aware and learned its lesson”.
Also, attacking Perezcope as a person, calling him vulgar and a cowered weakens your stance [also Panerai’s as the way you respond to these comments seems like you are talking on Panerai’s behalf]. Rather than attack him attach his claims. I do not know Perezcope but all he has done is state facts. His claims are backed by facts [i.e. the ETA incident that you too have admitted to be true].
Just to be clear these hiccups have not affected my love for the brand.

I am from China and own several Panerai watches. I feel that Panerai has started to "marriage dolls" in recent years, using P9010 for large watch diameters and P900 for small watch diameters. Those classic long-power movements are gone, even if the price of the limited edition is several times that of the ordinary version. P9010 or P900. I am very disappointed as a Panerai fans.

When summer comes it can be over 35c on a hot day so adjustments need to be made to compensate for expansion as the machine and temperature gets hot but nowadaus the room is kept around 68f and the coolant is kept cool enabling more consistant dimensions. Im proud to have machined and done QC on those beautiful quality panerai watches and i love the sandwich dials.

I love Panerai and I apperiate their design language and heritage, I only own one Panerai and it always put a smile on my face when it is on my wrist. Having said that, I believe Panerai made a few mistakes and was not as transparent as it should be, in the end it became a victim of its own success!

Thank you for the great video full of information. However, since Panerai was sold to the Richemont Group in 1997 and no longer belongs to the original family in Florence, it has nothing to do with Panerai except for the name. Today, this is a really good marketing concept with the Panerai brand name. Nothing more. But I guess that's the way things are. Most watch brands are now only marketing concepts of a few large luxury goods holding companies. On the other hand, many brands would also no longer exist...;-)

Hi Alexander. Great job on the video. In the next video may you please include Panerai's outlook and perspective on all the controversies mentioned in the comments. Many of them seem to be based on factual data and doesn't seem to be addressed in your videos. Its cool seeing the manufacturing process...but what is the deal with the updated movements losing hacking seconds and finishing/decoration? This seems to be the case, why is this topic being avoided? Please address topics like these in the next videos. I think the fans want to know more about company decisions and strategy's vs. oh panerai has new CNC machines that save energy.

Awesome. I am awaiting a replacement for the 233 or 270 models. They've made so many GMTs and GMTs without date. A GMT functionality without date and an AM/PM indicator (given Panerai's GMT 12 hour implementation) is not useful.

Outstanding video. I am a huge Panerai fan and owner of many from Carbotech to traditional steel. I have been in the watch world for 30 years now and am stunned by the latest but small percentage of internet stupidity and haters of Panerai. The effort they take speaks volumes of their ignorance and lack of experience in the watch world and how the industry works. It’s become a game of repeat misinformation over and over like a spoiled child having a tantrum. This is why a lot of my watchmaker friends no longer want to deal with this kind of ignorance and abuse on watch forums hence why the real knowledge base is drying up leaving this level of ignorance growing and flexing their ignorance proudly. It’s a shame but glad videos like this occasionally address some of the internet stupidity.

so curious, how much of these parts are manufactured in China to work around the 'Swiss Made" laws of 60/40?
Besides some bracelets that are manufactured in Italy (not only for Panerai!!) and the alligator straps that come from around the world, Panerai is 100% Swiss Made…
Virtue signaling about the new machines saving energy is fine. Please mention in your videos that it takes +30% more energy to recycle steel, than to create it from scratch. Be fair with your energy reporting.

@@mapa8100 There is no missing hacking second! It is a new and very reliable group calibre that is now used in several new watches. The latter is outperforming some others and therefore now being used by not only Panerai, but also Vacheron Constantin, Cartier, IWC + Baume & Mercier… it is the automatic platform calibre of Richemont… There is also no less decoration being applied… it is a technical decoration that gives these calibres a particular look… by the way: this video shows part of the decoration being done by a machine …

Very nice video! The COO mentioned the success of the Luminor Due 40mm. However, that watch doesn’t exist. The Luminor Due is available in 38mm and 42mm. The brushed case with polished bezel makes me think that the COO of Panerai was actually referring to the Luminor Marina Quaranta (40mm).
True! That was a life-talking/presenting-error... it is not so easy for everyone to stand in front of a camera... 😉

I absolutely love my Pam, I was recently at the Panerai Boutique in Zurich and purchased an Alligator strap which I’m very happy with. A big shout out to the team especially ( Yannick B ) a massive help and lots of patience.
I’m going to have one dig at Panerai and that is the printing on the dial of the ( e steel ) models, It’s a great idea but please do not print it on the dial, it would be better on the back of the case. Less is more when it comes to dial layout but that’s just a personal preference of course.

It’s interesting that they’re showing you a very well decorated movement. But in reality, most(especially recent) P900 is completely un decorated. Almost makes me think they know no decoration = bad. 😂
No decoration is wrong, but it is a very technical and minimalistic one… May I ask: What would you expect?
@@WatchAdvisor Here in Australia, the majority of Panerai watches that use the P900 movement are priced between $13.5k AUD (for the most basic submersible) up to $25k AUD for a Carbotech submersible. The average price for the P900 watches is somewhere around $15-$16.5k AUD. However, for the same price range, you can buy a JLC master series/JLC Reverso/Zenith Chronomaster or Defy/IWC Portuguese/Glashutte Original/Grand Seiko/Omega Speedmaster Moonphase/Blancpain Bathyscaphe etc. These comparably priced watches have significantly higher levels of movement decoration and finishing than the P900.
So, as a Panerai enthusiast, I expect movement decoration on par with those used by its competitors in a similar price range. I'm not expecting Lange levels of hand finishing, but some geneva stripes/perlage/anglage is to be expected for the price of a Panerai watch. I'm otherwise a big fan of your site/videos, keep the great content coming Alex!

The operation looks impressive it seems there is even more manufacturing equipment as at TAG Heuer I could recently visit. However, I think they now want to make it up what they stuffed up recently. I still cannot believe they removed on very basic movements the hacking seconds. We should not forget, that Richmont will also have their say and may add to some problems.
I had really a shocking experience with a JLC Polaris warranty case (crown came off after the first date change!) which had to go through the Richmont Service Center here in Switzerland. They managed to severely scratch the mirror polished back by a screwdriver when opening or closing the case. When I was sending macros of the scratches for proof, the responsable manager said under such a magnifications this was acceptable by their standard, but it was visible by naked eye! To me they are not competent at least not in 2019. What I heard when I was at JLC at a later stage, no one is really happy with the service centre. This applies at least to the simple Richmont watches.

@@jorfedgonbol yeah but even Vacheron use machines and robots to make their cases these days. In some ways they are still mass produced except for the grand complication pieces.

I just don't understand why they dropped the entire Radiomir 1940 line and cut down the regular Radiomir lineup to only 6 models.
Wasn’t probably their bestseller… Adaptions to collections happen…

Great video Alexander. Sad part of Panerai brand is that they now make too many special editions, they have not really managed to separate their tool watch division from their ‘consumer’ division (e.g. a crown guard on a 30m watch) makes no sense and cheapens the brand. Not to mention their cost cutting on finishing their inhouse movements (making them easier to counterfeit) and still commanding over 6k for a ‘Due’. As a very early panerai owner (I own an A-series PAM0001) I really hope they change their philosophy. Panerai arguably has the most compelling history and origin story of any other manufacturer (including ROLEX) and its a shame that the mystique of the brand has been so badly diminished of late.
I hear you, thanks for sharing! I do also own an A-series PAM001 and some more special Panerai watches… Let me put everything beside and give you some hints why it actually is at it is: Richemont has shareholders, they are keen to see “margins”… All brands except A. Lange & Söhne are called upon to deliver more margins by using either ValFleurier plattform calibres or ETA/Sellita calibres. Even Vacheron Constantin uses that criticized ValFleurier calibre ( no Geneva hallmark!) in the three-hand “FiftySix” and sells this entry price level like hell. Vacheron Constantin aficionados are upset as well! IWC Schaffhausen may not use its own calibres in all the “Portofino” collection… I recommend to just focus on the pieces you like and to see this “margin” exercises more relaxed…
Considering you are paying for a luxury watch, in a price range where other watch makers do everything in-house and have gone away from other producers, what makes the price of Panerai reasonable and not inflated because it is considered "luxury"? Don't get wrong I like Panerai, or what it used to be, but the reasonings in this video seems suspect.
No one makes everything in-house! Who claims this does not tell the truth… and it is part of the history of the Swiss watch industry to outsource certain operations to external partners… this will NEVER change …what you see in this video you would also see at even the high end luxury brands… the problem is that this industry over years tried to communicate that everything is done by hand… and that’s simply not true

Brilliant video Alexander, as always! It’s fascinating seeing behind the scenes like this, and I could watch videos like this all day. I was very close to buying a Pam 1313 a couple of weeks ago, but was a little unsure about spending so much money as it would be a lot more money than the two Omega’s that I have. This has inspired me to buy!

I have always loved Panerai- I love the designs , I love the fact Panerai are innovating in case materials , the carbotech is lovely , my grail Panerai would be a gold equation of time piece . I just hope Panerai learn from their past mistakes and miss information.
Let us all look forward… Mistakes happen! Everywhere… Panerai is aware and learned it’s lesson… meanwhile the brand continues to be highly successful… the demand of certain models exceeds production…

@@markdance574 Pricing of watches is a different story… comparing models with Omega ones is always challenging since the brand delivers an incredible quality and is clearly priced moderately… These are brand positioning discussions… a Richemont group decision…
Why at this price range, are there any closed case backs? 99.9% of customers want exhibition case backs. $125 automatic watches are coming with sapphire exhibition case backs. And higher water depth ratings. Panerai is my favorite watch manufacturer. But these issues are inexplicable, and embarrassing to be honest. Please correct these issues immediately.
See through case-backs add considerable thickness to the cases, especially when the latter are waterproof 300 meters…
@@WatchAdvisor True...but for example a PAM1312 lost the see-through case-back. It did not get thinner nor get more water resistance. Simply covered the movement and I'm sure you can guess the real reason for that.

Rolex does it even with watches above 50k USD in price. That being said, i have a PAM 968 which has a P.9010 visible through an exhibition caseback.

ETA modification experts - make a slight change & can legally call it “in-house”. But it’s just a short cut, they don’t want to manufacture unique movements from scratch. That’s too much work, eats into their high profit margins 😮
ETA when used in combination with a Dubois Dépraz module can not be called P9200 in-house… But that’s the only ETA use of which I know…

No company has lied and downgraded and mistreated customers in service as much as Panerai. The "stupid stories" come from real experiences which have been provided by victims of panerais lies in forums for over 10 years now. It is a company that has set a high bar on repeatedly deceiving its customers. I would not trust them on anything.
Well, I’d still recommend you not to believe everything that was additionally invented/published/said around some in fact unpleasant stories. The entire thing is steadily being “hyped” by a known group of people. Mistakes happen and changes to products without further notice do also happen in other sectors… My recommendation would be to either look forward and move on and/or not to buy a Panerai in the future anymore… Other mothers do also have beautiful daughters…

Excellent video. People like to pile on Panerai now because they think it makes them look knowledgeable. Some of the very same people who started on this path talking about Panerai not making their own movements are the ones who can say no wrong about Rolex - ignoring the fact that they were never inhouse either. They bought Zenith and Aegler movements (and finally Aegler itself) and numerous other parts from Swiss vendors. That's the reality of the watch industry.

I couldn’t agree more to what you wrote… my words… The industry itself “helped” to create such silly stories by prayerful repeating that everything is done in-house, everybody now is 100% manufacture and that “Brownies” in the mountains and valleys do all the work by hand… People are literally shocked when they see machines being used to manufacture a watch… and yes, only a minority understands how this industry really ticks… Like in the past, also today NO ONE is doing everything in-house… this will never change…

Thanks for showing this behind the scenes! Always enjoy these from any manufacturer but especially for Panerai it is good to show they do have the tech and knowhow to produce their own stuff.
Of course this does not change the fact they still rely heavily on Vaucher as well and other suppliers, but this is normal in the industry. Asking prices are still not quite justified in my mind, but I suppose many are willing to pay a premium for the name and iconic design, like so many similar brands in the Richmont and other groups.
But people like Perezcope saying this doesn't prove anything are either blind, ignorant or willingly biased or ill-intended to slander Panerai in some petty way..you are literally showing the production and finishing of key components in detail. This is simply how modern watches are made.

Panerai was a passing fad. Just like Rolex, way too much machining to justify the prices.
10k watches are mostly machined. I don’t think there is any brand that gives you hand finishing and in house movement.
In-house calibres are being used in almost all 10K watches today… and also the most expensive/exclusive watches are machined and of course not hand made… assembled by hand though - yes!
All watches, no matter the price are machined on CNC machines. This ensure high consistency and quality. It’s just that the really high end timepieces have more manual finishing.
Another great video - I always appreciate seeing inside the manufacture... But, the difference between brands now seems very slight - nearly all are using the same materials, the same CNC machines, the same third party contractors... The Chinese could do the same tomorrow. Yet as consumers we see huge variation in price between brands which largely boils down to volume, marketing and brand positioning. Inside Longines, would we see anything very different? Yet a simple Panerai is 3x the price of eg a Spirit.
The differences in manufacturing with machines are minimal… but then when it comes to manual assembly/treatment differences start to get huge… this also determines the price of a watch…
@@WatchAdvisor Absolutely! And this creates the value for Parmigiani, Lange, GO, Blancpain, Breguet... but at the mid/lower end (Omega, Rolex, Longines, Tudor, Panerai, IWC, Cartier etc)..? Very different prices, very little manual work. The reality is that these watches don't cost a huge amount to make, relative to retail and the production cost between brands is very small. But there is a HUGE difference in retail cost for the consumer, who is often utterly unaware of the (lack of) difference and what they are or aren't paying for. But Alexander, your work does a great service in educating us, for which I'm certainly grateful!

Strange enough that Jose Perestroika does not dare to discuss these issues with either CEO Jean-Marc and/or other Panerai staff… I personally asked him in Zürich a couple of weeks ago eye to eye if he would want to discuss the issues with Jean-Marc and/or others, but he refused… Weird, isn’t it? Instead of being interested he started to be vulgar… What a coward he is!
I can't stand some of these Panerai haters, is Panerai perfect? No. Have they made mistakes? Yes. But do they make quality watches with an iconic design? Yes. If you hate em you are obviously not the target market. I'm a proud owner of the now discontinued PAM682 which is a 42mm luminor submersible, I've had the watch since 2018 and the watch has never given me any problems. I still think Panerai make some great quality watches and I say this as an owner of Grand Seiko, Omega, and JLC.
Nothing is "hated" by no reason. Those scandals in the past are real and that's why some lost faith in Panerai. I'm not saying Panerai is a bad brand as a fact, because everything can change, but it requires a lot of effort from them to gain back faith (if they think they need to do so), and maybe being straightforward about their production like in this video may help. Even though to be honest, I am not very impressed (now at least because this is only the first episode). They only show (or have) the production of bridges, plates, and cases, which is just recent.
They just removed the hacking second of P9010 quietly. Though they have changed several different CEOs, seems dishonesty is rooted in this brand.
By the way: The P9010 still has hacking seconds! “Changed different several CEOs” ????? What are you writing about? That is totally meaningless - sorry!
@@WatchAdvisor Actually it doesn’t. They removed it in 2021. I have a PAM1279 on my table right now that doesn’t hack. Thanks for an amazing video though , I also visited the factory in Neufchâtel in 2018.
