My First Panerai Watch + Why Now Is The BEST Time To Buy - 40mm Luminor PAM00048 Unboxing & Review

  • I'm kicking off 2023 with a true luxury icon-and one I never expected to own-the Panerai Luminor (PAM00048). In this video I return to a brand I never thought I'd enjoy so much, with an undervalued, modestly-sized, 40mm offering that's an absolute strap monster and can be found at an affordable price compared to retail offerings listed at more than twice as much. Once upon a time, I would have never imagined that one of the best value propositions in the watch industry would be a Panerai, but everything they got wrong with the more recent Luminor Due (which I previously reviewed) is not an issue with this far tougher, more capable, tooltastic, and largely forgotten older version. Join me for an unboxing, initial reaction and mini review of the Panerai Luminor, including its positives and negatives, and an in-depth look at its history and evolution. Despite the many controversies associated with the brand over the decades, it's never been a better time to buy a Panerai watch. What do you think of this watch and the Panerai brand? Please share in the comments!

Went to a Panerai boutique a few years ago. I had just gotten into watches and was browsing as many local shops as I could, although the vast majority of the salesmen didn’t pay me any attention, a salesman at the Panerai store stopped me and my friend and asked us if we knew the story of Panerai. He proceeded to explain the nautical history and relationship with the fascist submarine crews that TGV described. Although I knew I didn’t have the wrist for it, I knew I would one day own a Panerai. Still working towards that goal, but just goes to show you how important those small acknowledgments are.

I don't have the wrist for it and yet I wear my Pam 372 with pride. I find it funny how "watch lovers" find history important but then complain about historically correct sizes. Panerai is like non other. You'll love it.

@@wkskdnam Stories are the difference in connecting and not, to the product or even to a person. A good story is important because otherwise it is not logical to purchase a watch over $15 for a cheap quartz watch that is more accurate than any mechanical watch. A logical choice to go from point A to B and back a million times is a Toyota corolla or Prius, but I would rather have a Ferrari 250GTO with the barking V12. But if you want to go for the Prius, more power to you.

Wearing a Panerai is a paradox. While its immense size is eye catching, the absolute simplicity of the watch does not scream opulence or flamboyance but rather a sense of history, a metaphor to its birthplace Firenze. I absolutely love it.

Love a Panerai! I have owned several over the years. I recommend the titanium cases as they’re significantly lighter and a bit less blingy than the full polished stainless cases. The customer experience is also great, the staff in the Bond St boutique are always welcoming, a total contrast to most Rolex dealers. There will always be space in my collection for a Luminor.

Panerai is one of the few brands I absolutely love, but can’t seem to connect with in-person. I have a similar relationship to Cartier: a deep admiration and appreciation, but also a bittersweet acceptance that I’m not the right person to pull off those watches. That’s one of my greatest lessons in this hobby. You don’t have to own everything you love, and you can enjoy watches without wearing them. Sometimes it’s just not meant to be.

TGV I am pleased to see Panerai featured in your channel. I own the exact same PAM0048 and have owned it for over 12 years, having bought it at the New York boutique. I cannot part with my Panerai its an icon and even if it may be “big” its a stament piece and a very rugged and at the same time handsome watch. All you need is to change straps to rubber, leather, alligator. And you completely change the vibe of the watch.I highly recommend it, but if I were to buy another one, it would be the the 8 day manual wind in Titanium with the sandwich dial it is INCREDIBLE. Cheers!

Yes, they have deviated a bit from their origins lately, but I completely agree with you: this is a great time to burn that plastic and get one. I currently have a Luminor Marina 1312 with the sandwich dial. GORGEOUS. In-house updated movement - so beautiful! A few years ago, I also had a 40mm luminor marina with the old movement - I could feel it wobble on my wrist - but I liked it - it was like the watch wanting to state its presence to me. Great video as always!

I have the very same watch since 2012 (purchased new). Every time I think about trading in for something else, something stops me from doing it. I guess it's the iconic design and emotional attachment that no other watch has given to me. It is a conversation piece like no other watch. While some think that 40mm is small for Panerai, it wears much bigger than the size suggests. As for the reliability, it is super accurate and nothing ever went wrong during my 10 plus years of ownership.

Yes, it doesn't have the water proofing and I get that many Paneristi hate that, but, it fits under a shirt sleeve and looks beautiful in a suit or tux. And that's why I bought it, for formal wear. Although with the right strap, it looks quite sporting as well. I think this opens up a new world of customers for the brand that might never have looked at them. We'll see how it all pans out.

Nice purchase. I am lucky enough too have 3 Panerai in my collection, all time favourite brand. My latest is the The Quaranta Black dial. A beautiful piece. I just can’t fathom this obsession with the water resistance, I am a former combat diver and can’t ever recall going to 300m. 100m is more than enough, stand next to a 100m building and look up, deep enough. And as we only dive with computers now, it’s an obsolete technology. Enjoy the watch 👍

I absolutely love my Pam 111. However I have had some issues with the movement. I had to have it rebuilt twice since 2018 once being sent back to the factory. Again it is broken for a third time. Having said that it is my favorite watch in my collection and it hurts me when it is broken. I still love it immensely.

Last October, my wife and I spent a week in Paris prior to a river cruise. She wanted to do some shopping so we went to Galleries Lafayette. I got to spend the entire 6 hours in the watch shops on the first floor. And after looking at most all of the major brands and their current offerings, I bought a new Panerai 1335 , a blue “Origin” Radiomir. And I have enjoyed it.
I also have been frequently in Firenze and usually rent a room on Via Guicciarideni. So to finally find my Panerai was a big thrill. Mine is a recently released 45mm that rides well on my 8 inch wrist. It is unique and seldom seen in my part of the states. So- I’m glad you are a Firenzephile, and you have your Panerai. Many thanks.

Ahh yes, I’d been waiting for the Urban Gentry to put out another great video. This time on a an unexpected but well received brand like Panerai! Makes me want one simply because they haven’t changed their look much like Cartier. I was surprised I didn’t see you in Teddy’s most warn wrist watches for CZcamsrs. I know he had to of asked you!

Last year I got my first Panerai after years of thinking about it. PAM1314. First white dial sandwich. I love it. I wanted something different...and that is exactly what a Panerai is.

That is a really cool watch, once that I debated getting. Got my first Panerai in May, went for the 683 sub. Freaking love it! I was worried the 42mm would be too large for my 6.5 inch wrist, but it fits great.

I bought a Panerai 104 just over 5 years ago. It was a brand I've always wanted to own. My grandfather was a Carabinieri in and around Naples before he immigrated to Canada. I know they were never issued to Carabinieri, but being so close to the Amalfi Coast, I would have hoped he came in contact with some of the Marina Militare wearing their Radiomirs.
Congrats on the purchase. It looks great on you!

Buon anni, TGV! Great video and run down of the Panerai story. Very nice piece, although I also prefer the sandwich dial. I wasn’t sure how these would sit on my wrist, but we both have similarly sized wrists, so I’m sure it would be ok. I quite like the crown protection on these and the not dissimilar Graham chrono fighters. Welcome back!

The watch is certainly unique. Also it goes so well with you with your interest in military history, movies and your connection to Firenze, where I used to live in the 1990ties. I understand your excitement, mate!

Great content and timely for me - I had no interest in Panerai until very recently. I fully assumed I would be buying a Tudor or Omega until I tried a buddy’s Radiomir. It fit so well and looked so good that it’s top of my list now…👍

Man i love the Panerai, its beautiful and unique and it feels like a watch that grows on everyone and people start off by disliking it, and somewhere in that journey of watches i find it beautiful the effect it has on people.

You present here again not only a watch that you have bought new but you also impart insanely much background knowledge and historically interesting. Bought the PAM647 Luminor Due! Maligned for its weak water resistance, however, it has exactly all the Panerai DNA I wanted on a thinner case, sandwich dial, all the cardinal numbers with that gorgeous micro rotor movement. Oh well, I guess it will never see water, but the point is to get into the custom straps. Waited for a used one and paid under 6K for a minty specimen. No regrets! Good time to buy preowned. Glad to see TGV's appreciation and comfort in the classic PAM048.
