A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.
This is the third track I've made specifically for the Push 3, and I'm having a better and better time as I go. There are a few behind-the-scenes videos about this particular setup over on my Patreon.
The idea is that the set/album is playable live without requiring too much mental juggling, but since I'm only presenting them as individual songs, I thought I'd add in the PWM Malevolent for fun. The Malevolent adds well to the overall feeling I'm going for in these songs, and the Chroma Console helps shape the sound even more. Makes me wonder what I could add next time for fun!
Looking forward to playing these all as a set. Hopefully soon!
Thanks for listening.
Reason 12 (behind the scenes) - a lot of the songwriting and structuring
Ableton Push 3 - most sounds, effects, and performance
PWM Malevolent through Hologram Chroma Console - gritty synth bass thing
Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

That was sick. And of course the shout out warms the heart.
This series of videos is really making a great case for the Push 3 as a solid live performance instrument, especially with well-designed macros for adding variety and transitions on the fly. Great job.
Really digging that malevolent sound with the smooth, dark chords and distorted drums.
Woah jay this is an incredible arrangement. The drum programming is soo tight.
This track is dope!
This is so unbelievably epic. When the saturation hit on the lead bass I was like 🤤🤤😍
Insane track!
Absolutely sick!
Nice beats on this track, sounds great
Can't wait for the record. Sounds amazing!
Fantastic, so powerfull!

Jay thanks for sharing your wild, engaging and beautifully mixed tunes. So much feeling and meaningful forays into the elements. I’m loving the flowering breakdown and build. Super dope unique work Jay Bravo

So Good 👍
Perfecto! Awesome work Jay.
Really enjoyed this, thanks for sharing
Brilliant. Well done, Mr. Hosking!
Variation over Theme - this hits straight Homerun ! Manifique ! Bravo !
Excellent ! I like the nostalgic vibe.
phenomenal! It's just... man, it's just mind-blowing
that was very cool!! love it!
Well Done
Love these new songs Jay! Did I catch a call back to “Come Back” at 3:00? So great! Thanks.
Another triumph!
Another banger, Jay. Music to lift heavy to.
awesome!
My headphones loved this ❤
Love it... Do you feel like Push 3 has/will replace your beloved octatrack?
No. The Octatrack is still much better designed as a piece of hardware, feels better in the hands, faster to work on the device, and better for live performance. But the Push 3 is much easier and better for setting up longer structures, more than seven instruments, and in general bringing some of my DAW ideas to life. I have considered bringing all these Push 3 songs to the Octatrack and using a master performance template, but it would be much more of a hassle on the Octatrack, and I'd have to get clever about the reduced track count. I still might try it, though! And thanks!
@@JayHosking My own music is very different than yours, but you influence me regularly. Thanks!
Rad! ❤
Damn, I had to listen twice. Thats dope.
This goes crazy

SLAPPIN
🎉
FUCK YES!!! Whooo turn it up! ❤
Great drumming man, the snare sound so organic.
Is there a sample pack you can point as to?
Tympo by Teletone Audio. Really great sounding kits.
Wow, wow, wow!!!!😮
I am your fan and slave 🥹
Love the Malevolent for this. Random question - have you tried Splice? I'm late to the game on it, but finding its vast sample library, great filter search and integration with ableton really awesome. I bet you could find some cool vocal hits or similar to play with, that would make this piece even more memorable and unique!
I haven't tried Splice, but have meant to for some time. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to it!
Wow those drums are amazing. Programmed? Samples? What drum kit? Please more info 😊
Programmed. I used Tympo from Teletone Audio, which is a multi-sampled drum program with a lot of fast and useful control over the sequencing, plus some excellent kit sounds. I agree that it's a great-sounding plug-in. And thanks!
Dark and danceable is almost always my goal! Do you typically think in terms of what scale?
I usually start playing and look for an interplay between the sound and particular notes. Often I will have a root (F#, here) but kind of move in and out of scales.
awesome! do you use the sequencer within tympo? or your own midi (from ableton) to trigger the tympo vst?
I use the sequencer in Tympo. Part of my "rules" for this set is to program all the drums myself; normally, I'm not great at that and don't enjoy it, but Tympo lets you quickly program triggers and velocity at the same time, and feel & pitch are simple to add. As such, I'm having a lot of fun making the drums this time out.
"Something dark that you can dance", I'm a bad dancer, but you clearly get the goal!
Love also the "realness" of the drums. They sound overall really cool.
About your set, I ask myself how will you manage with the effects and the external synths? Will you "take them all" or will you try to make compromises between the sounds of what you recorded and what is physically possible to take to a gig so you try to select a few synths and effects that can do more and from which you can get closer sounds to what you recorded?
Thanks! I'm a terrible dancer as well. I think the main compromise will be to reduce as many of the external pieces of gear as needed, i.e. to be able to strip the set down to just the Push 3 if needed. The goal is that I'll be able to travel extremely lightly and portably, and to set up quickly, so everything fundamental will be in the Push 3, and everything else will be for fun and supplement.
@@JayHosking Sounds like a nice starting point.I'm curious to see in what you feel that the Push 3 makes and doesn't make the job.
Is there any dates and locations already booked? :)
All-timer.
So you have the chroma console inputting the master outs of the Push 3?
Wondering if you have used the chroma console with midi and how that works with the push! ?
No, the Chroma Console is on the PWM Malevolent only. I haven't used it with MIDI yet, sorry.
@@JayHosking oh okay. Gotcha. I plan on using it as a sort of master effects for the Push. Thanks anyways and great video / music!!
Wow beautiful really enjoy it Jay! Was headbanging in from of my screen (for sure it will work live 😁). Really liked the syncopated parts at 1:49 and 4:11 🤩 (don't know why this track made me think of the vibes of the DM Easy Tiger remix: czcams.com/video/8c70y4XKk38/video.html)
Those two moments are my favourite, too! Thanks so much. Keep making your amazing stuff!
sick
Just excellent, creative and original. The last time I listened to such an epic and energetic piece with many variations was a long time ago... I'd say Propellerheads On her Magesty's secret service. Keep on regaling us, you're one of the most creative guys in the youtube game in a sea of mediocrity and mawkishness. Thank you
