A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on hardware.
I'd recently been inspired by the emergence of so many great live performances on the Moog semi-modular units, thanks in part to the "Moog Sound Studio" bundles now being sold. While most of my favourite tracks were ambient (see AB85's amazing stuff on CZcams if you haven't already!), I can't help myself. This ended up being a fun groove that I just wanted to bring over the top.
To help, I used the Zoia Euroburo for reverb on the Subharmonicon and Mother 32. I had originally thought I'd use the Euroburo as a modulator as well, but I was happy with the sound and did relatively little patching. Maybe in the future! In any case, the Euroburo did a great job on creating some space for the synth sounds in this track; its "Reverb Lite" algorithm is supposed to be a CPU-friendly alternative, but I find it just sounds pretty great in general.
For the DFAMs, I wanted something to leverage their weirdness and wildness. So for the kick sounds, I used the Valco KGB Fuzz (to get it buzzy and wild and droning at the end) and the UA FX Starlight (to add some energy and stereo space in the finale). And for the cymbal sounds, I added the Erica Synths Zen Delay, which is such an amazing and performative effects pedal, and it became another instrument in its own right.
Overall, this track is a great reminder that good analog boxes can get you 90% of the way there. I love how these semi-modulars sound.
Moog Subharmonicon - Chords and pseudo-arp
Moog Mother 32 - Melody-type thing
Empress Zoia Euroburo - mixer and reverb for the melodic synths
Moog DFAM 1 via Valco KGB Fuzz and UA FX Starlight - kick/bass
Moog DFAM 2 via Erica Synths Zen Delay - cymbals/lasers
Thanks for listening.
Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

2 years later, 5 thousandth play- still captivating. ❤ I wish this was available on spotify
It should be there. Song is called "Ostinato" and it's on the album Cinematic Works. And thanks!
@@JayHosking Oh man, all this time, I could have been listening to it on Spotify too! haha. thanks man!
@@JayHosking I wish all of the youtube plays could transfer over to spotify. I'll make up for it. :)
This is the greatest synth video on CZcams. The way the Mother melody overlays the Sub - hits me right in the spine
You have good taste!
"The greatest synth video on CZcams." ::::sigh:::: I respect your right to an opinion, but honestly... Some names: Lisa Bella Donna. Blush Response. Cuckoo. Venus Theory. Look Mum, No Computer. French 79. EZ Bot. Hainbach. Ben Jordan. This was nice, I agree. But that accolade was more than a bit over zealous.
@@Berus7777 all bad.. u bad too
it is the best
@@Berus7777Is your intent really to make a happy listener happier by redirecting them to something “better”?
Or is it that you don’t understand the fact of subjective musical taste at all?
The whole point of CZcams is to capture diversity so we don’t all have to watch the same stuff because we don’t all like the same stuff and in my opinion, life is better that way.
Second time this piece appears in my CZcams feed. Great performance!
I can now throw my tv out the window and just listen to your jams
great ending sequence. really letting em roar before the soft wrapup
Ok, thats why these things were created. A tear is running down my eyes.
I’m glad someone else doesn’t want to hold back. Aggressive…kicks butt
As a kid I used to lug my $75 White face Arp Oddyssey into the lab at Fullerton College, hook it up to their effects goo and see how long I could keep things interesting for. Usually five minutes or so. Once I got a good live take I'd go home.
I got some backward looks coz at the time FM was king! They had a DX7 there too I would chime in a few notes from that thing now and then when not too obvious.
I never let my instructor, Alex Cima, hear my stuff... coz I figured he was way beyond what I was doing + I was embarassed.
Oops!
Haha you couldn't resist the KGB fuzz.
LOLed at "I was inspired by some beautiful ambient pieces on these Moog semi-modulars, but I have no chill" - I was just thinking to myself "wow, this is getting strong and great!" Well done at not defaulting to ambient for these beasts, they're able to do more!
absolutely love the build up - so much power
I got to 32 seconds and was like NOPE! I HAVE to get my headphones and listen to this the proper way. And it was awesome!
Two DFAMs is always the right number! Superb jam so far. Still listening of course. Deploying the laser beams on the DFAM never gets old
Impeccable. Love how clean the black background looks with this symmetrical set up.
This song is a masterpiece
I love the melody on that sequence and that liquid sound
Indulge as much as you like. I’ll be here to listen. Great jam!
A great demo of what the Moogs can do.
Love that creepy lead when the Mother 32 comes in at the beginning. 👍🏻
MmmmHmmmm A Jay Hosking jam for breakfast, yes please.
I’m pretty sure this is my favorite video on CZcams. I must come back to this at least a few times every couple weeks. This is such a fabulous take!
Brilliant! This is the last video I need to watch to buy a Subh and Dfam, I'm 100% convinced now :)
Easily the best video of the machines I have ever seen.
Fantastic work!
Fantastic as always
that was simply an audible delight.. quite exquisite.. 🙏👍
Fantastic work
time and time again my main takeaway is - it's all about the melodies, writing is the king!
Fantastic!! Very well done 👍🏻
Damn. Such a beautiful arch. So we’ll designed. The development and time horizon of it is perfect. Mastery. I love the muted, dark synths still pulsing at the end after the filters close back down is gorgeous. And using the zen delay as a riser is totally next level creativity. Amazing work on this, man. Thank you for taking the time to educate us and give us a sense of what you’re doing along the well as well 🙏. Makes it not only fun to watch but I feel like I’m becoming a better producer watching you work. Total joy. Thank you!
I appreciate the kind words. I also appreciate you creating a platform for me to get paid as a musician during the non-touring era of my life, and during a pandemic. Let me know if you need music for anything (not that you would, but still). Also, your collab with Knower is a scorcher I still go back to years later!
Agree 100%. Amazing.
Arch ? Like Noé ?

Beautiful. That warm and cozy kick/bass is quite something.
Insanely strong buildup, I LOVE your setup and your skills.
This was so very good. Love to see the melodic side of modular/semi-modular.
On top of a very nice performance, the mix is perfect.
the annotation where which device is and what you are doing are a very nice change to the videos where people put their hands between a ton of cables and then suddenly have a completely different sound. 😁
