A live, semi-improvised modular performance performed entirely on hardware, with one guitar overdub.
This jam started with a simple exploration of the Intellijel Metropolix, a neat sequencer that helps you stumble into inspiration, along with two voices (the Noise Engineering Manis Iteritas and the Acid Rain Chainsaw). My ambitions were no more than "play guitar with eurorack". But as the song found itself, and more and more was added to the table, it became clear I'd have to add guitar after the the fact.
A big highlight here is the Prok Drum modules being sequenced by the Mutable Instruments Grids. Not only is Grids fast and inspiring, but its modulation allows you to add performability (like the snare rolls I add via a touch pad here) and variety (through its chaos and frequency controls). Special thanks to Michael, a good human and also a member of my Patreon community, for allowing me to commission him to build the Prok modules! You're the best, Michael.
And of course, the Erica Synths Zen Delay works its magic again. Here, it runs everywhere from flanger to filter to gonzo delay, and I just love what it adds to a jam.
The patches would take a very long time to explain, but here are the modules:
Voices:
- Noise Engineering Manis Iteritas
- Squarp Rample
- Acid Rain Chainsaw
- Qu-Bit Chord
- Frequency Central Product
- Prok drum modules
Sequencers:
- Intellijel Metropolix
- Westlicht Performer
- Mutable Instruments Grids
Modulators:
- ALM Busy Circuits Pamela's New Workout
- Intellijel Dual ADSR and Dual VCA
Filters:
- Make Noise QPAS
- WMD Overseer
Mixers:
- Befaco STMix
- Intellijel Mixup
- Intellijel 1u Mixer
Effects:
- Noise Engineering Ruina Versio, Desmodus Versio, Melotus Versio
- Strymon Magneto
- Intellijel 1u Multi-FX
- Qu-Bit Data Bender
- WMD MSCL
Output modules:
- Strymon AA.1
- Intellijel Audio I/O
For guitar, I used the Godin Radium Winchester Brown, which is a ton of fun. For its effects, I had the Union Tube & Transistor Lab (for compression) and C-verb (for shoegaze reverb), and the Strymon Iridium for amp simulation.
Modular performance recorded live, and guitar performance recorded in one take on a separate pass. EQ, compression, and limiting on the mix and master.

This is what I want to hear from Modular Synths. Not meaningless loop but REAL music! Brillient as always. Thanks!
Eurorack jam usually means endless noodling, but this was a synth rock track with a great hook.
Excellent stuff!
Unmistakenly "Hoskinianna" - WHAT a TRIP ! - DAMN, I love the way you are you ! 🤩
BIG thumbs UP for this track!!! I really enjoy listening to music which seems "natural" at first glance but has a special twist (the odd time signature here 🤩)
Holy modules! Now that’s a lot of wires lol
It’s incredible to me the variety of synths you have, and how proficient you are with each of them - great stuff 🤘
Ah, now something on CZcams WORTH watching. Thanks!
This is the eurorack track I have been looking for.
Fantastic track! Modular is so over my head but I love watching folks who know how to use it. Well done!
Couldn't have said that about modular any better 😉🙂
Amazing! Loved every second of this. So atmospheric and epic :-)
That is great... I had to keep turning it down so my ears wouldn't bleed.
Whew! Loved this! So much stuff coming together beautifully. Every aspect was dead-on perfect.
Mega monster stonking track Jay, absolutely fabulous.
Oh yesss! I love this. Greatness.
This was a killer track. Great variation on the Manis sound and great guitar playing on top.
I can't stop replaying this, that's awesome
Love from France 🇨🇵
you are a true artist
This is completely different to your usual music, but I like it as much (very inspiring to me) 👍, thanks
this is some of the best music ive heard in a long time
Damn dude. I didn't know you got down like that. More please 🤟🤙
Wonderful melodic speed machine. Great!
Love all your stuff man, I haven’t been this excited for new music to come out since like 2012! One thing I noticed though is your guitar sometimes gets lost… you’re a great player and you should let it come forward more!
Wowwww, amazing as always man!
absolutely killer track.
Killed it Mane

So goooooood 🥰
Hellyeah! Great Song!
Rock n' roll will never die... well done dude!
Hell yeah!!
OMG 😱 hands down the best Jam on CZcams!!! Can I listen to this on Spotify or something?
This one's not on streaming yet, but it'll be on an album once I've collected an album's worth of similar-feeling music. And thanks so much!
insaaaane
Holy..shit..
I love the iridium, did you already try some others amp simulations?
Tried a bunch over the years. Always had a soft spot for the Pod (kidney bean) because of its immediacy. The Iridium sounds great and also is quick to dial in, without any menus. Can't emphasize how inspiring it is; it gets out of your way and lets you create.
@@JayHosking never thought about the pod! Thanks ! I also got the iridium and really love its immediacy and the sound as well! Thanks for the answer ❤️
I'm also thinking of making multiple drum modules and making a diy modular drum machine, any schematics you would reccomend?
This is the drum setup I'm using now and I'm in love with it: www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/1751163
How do you figure out where all the cables go
Well, I plugged them all in, so that helped!
Dude that's an amazing set. You know your shit. Is this on streaming sites?
Not yet. And thanks!
7/7 ? Rythm and 8/8 Sequenz ?
hmmm I am confused
are you interested in doing any breakcore/idm type stuff in the near future?
Truthfully, I don't know genres very well. I just make what I feel like, combined with where the gear leads me. I think what I'm working on at the moment (focused mainly on the drum rack here) would be classified as IDM, but I don't know.
@@JayHosking yeah, maybe that's why I enjoy your music so much, since it isn't defined by a genre it's quite unique.
Furst Comet
what genre is this?
Who knows!
remember your jam of Cinematic ambient jam w/ Eurorack (Pam's, 4ms Ensemble, Plaits, Data Bender, QPAS, Beads, and more)"? Well I'm making a documentary for my middle school history project, can I add a film to it and use it as background music? No profits will be made off this.
If you're making a school project and it only goes as far as submitting it to your teacher for a grade, I'm pretty sure you can use whatever music you want! (My own included.) I do like trying to imagine what a middle school project topic would be with that soundtrack, though!
@@JayHosking I'm doing a documentary on Gandhi, for a thing called National History Day. If I go past school level I may go to state/nationals, is that still fine with you?
