    Clarifying in case it gets lost in translation: the Moondrop LINK app is not required for the DSP to work.
    The Default profile is baked into the DSP cable right out of the box, so in that regard it is immediately plug-and-play. No additional EQ software is required.

    • @alrizo1115
      @alrizo1115 Před 3 měsíci +14

      what if people switch cables? will it still sound almost the same? I think it's better for the default preset to be applied on the IEM itself, not on the dsp cable. I saw reviewers get disappointed that they can't use it on their current system with analog as the tuning is baked on the dsp cable.

    • @crin
      @crin Před 3 měsíci +93

      @alrizo1115 DSP still requires a DAC of some sort. What you're referring to is analog tuning, and the DUSK has been deliberately tuned to match the Blessing2:Dusk in analog due to the universal praise it got.
      The Default DSP preset is a different flavour, one that is apparently even more universally praised compared to the B2:D, but relies on the DAC chipset in the USB-C connection.

    • @millsjonah
      @millsjonah Před 3 měsíci +11

      @@alrizo1115doing it on the IEM would have basically been impossible. Let's say you're using the 3.5 mm cable. The signal would go from digital to analog from phone to cable. Then the IEM would have to convert analog to digital, back to analog. That would be such a mess to engineer and tune right.

    • @ninjashuriken
      @ninjashuriken Před 3 měsíci +19

      @@alrizo1115 Crin explained this in his full video but basically the default DSP is just little bits a pieces to make it perfect. The Dusk is supposed to be tuned really well acoustically in analog but due to engineering limitations they included DSP to perfect the tuning. Its quite literally just a free upgrade, I do think it should be included in the form of PEQ files for download as well though.

    • @darkfeeels
      @darkfeeels Před 3 měsíci +3

      @crin can you confirm if the analog is indeed B2D preset? because I was going to find B2D in used instead of these. If these fulfill that requirement and their DSP is good too, then this Dusk makes more sense.

    Dude, most people don't know how to EQ when a sound signature bothers them. It is truly remarkable to have the work done for them via DSP for most people. The other thing is no one wants to change eq settings on each device each time they plug their IEM in a different device, sometimes you plug a different headphone and you forget to change your EQ profile, it's simply not handy. So an IEM carrying its own EQ is just better.

    Thanks Resolve for the review. Crin has actually done this use of one device to show two targets with the TruthEar Zero & Zero:Red, the blue being Harman and Red being IEF, but sadly a lot of reviewers and commentors never touched on what the Red was, instead they simply highlighted how you can get better sound with Hexa from the same stable, showing how they completely missed the point that Crin was making, where he was saying "here is the same device with two tunings, which one is your preference". The Zeros (at US105 combined) were so that you could find the general signature you prefer for when you are buying the really expensive stuff, instead some people even complained that project red was just another cheap Crin tuned IEM.

    I like both the Analog and DSP tuning, with Analog coming across like a slightly less harsh version of the B2D, but I do prefer the tuning of the DSP default. I still have my issues with the free DSP cable, and concerns with longevity as there have been complaints of the cable failing after a few months, as well I’ve started to have issues with my Moondrop may freedsp cable where it cuts out when listening and needs to be reseated.
    Achieving something closer to the DSP default tuning through analog means would have stirred up less controversy

      @gbr412 Před 3 měsíci +1

      I think this is due to DSP default being so largely better than Analog, that it creates a big enough gap between the two, making people bash over the Analog unconsciously so they can better emphasize the benefits of DSP.

      Resolve was in the comments on Reddit (about this video) and he even stated that it’s good without the DSP cable.
      Reviewers became enamored with how good it is with DSP so it’s really moreso about wanting that tuning stock.
      The problem is Crin explained this. Drivers and crossover filters can only do so much passively. If you try to fine tune too much, it creates other issues.

    For those who want to replicate the Dusk's DSP default tuning in analog mode with an EQ app or Qudelix 5K, the filters and exact values seem to be:
    Filter 1: PK | 1400Hz | -3 | 0.8 Q
    Filter 2: PK | 5400Hz | -3 | 2 Q
    Filter 3: PK | 14000Hz | -5 | 2 Q
    The filters are basically provided by crin himself in his video, but he didn't give what gain or Q filter values, which I found to be these.

    I preordered the Dusk and seeing how there were EQ values provided finally got me to try EQ APO + Peace GUI on my PC. Doing more research on it, I came across profiles for some of my already owned IEM's that get them towards a certain target, and I'm blown away by the new life brought to those IEM's that I stopped using as much. Seeing all the options and sliders to adjust on an EQ definitely put me off from trying it earlier, but having different profiles for specific headphones to get a starting base to tune from made the process a whole lot easier to play around with. Makes me wish that manufacturers would just provide EQ profiles for various targets/preferences along with their headphones. A text file with just a few lines of values is all that's needed to import them through Peace.

But I'm not, most audiophiles would consider me casual, but I'm still well above normies in my expectations. I currently use fiio FH5 with their Bluetooth amp since i only listen to music via my phone or computer. Not having to worry about recharging that amp will be a good quality of life improvement, and having some presets that the community agrees sounds amazing means i get to experience "true goodness" without spending tons of money or finicking around with EQ wondering if i really got the best tuning for me.
    This protect was definitely not made for everyone, like most products. It is something that does appeal to a casual audiophile like myself who was already thinking about spending some money to upgrade his experience.

    Good critique, especially on the not so great app. Great info on the diffuse field and Harman curves, but to add another dimension, your enjoyment of either will also depend on whether you are using your IEM along with spatial audio - be this through modern game engines , hardware DSP (ifi audio), software dsp (professional version of Waves, Audeze, etc). Spatial audio or very good crossfeed can make a huge difference in presenting a more natural soundfield similar to speakers in a room that most stereo recordings were designed for.
    Regarding the Dusk, looks like a good iem. Myself, I replaced my Blessing 2 with the Kiwi Ears Quintet instead. The Quintet splits the difference between the Blessing 3 and the new Dusk (DSP). It has a similar mid-range/treble as the Blessing 3 with the bass section of the new Dusk. It's a touch hot on poor masters, but sounds great with the most dynamic recordings. Doesn't have the top end treble spike, is much cheaper, still great tech, is smaller, good build and has a lip on the nozzle. Might be an alternative for some.

    also, I wonder if DSP being baked in means that we maybe can get perfect channel matching via some DSP shenanigans in the future? hoping?

    most of the DAPs have Android and support the terrible Monondrop app, so it's not just a limitation of use with phones.. moreover if you can "upload" the setting into the cable, it's really a great thing and I bet you won't need to do it more than a few times at the beginning, once you find your preferred tuning you just keep it into the cable, and the USB-C cable can be used with phones, DAPs and computers... so in the end it's just an initial adaptation, then it goes smoothly - looking forward to getting my Dusk !

    I'd like to see an IEM that sticks to its analogue tuning but uses DSP and an app to calibrate the anolgue tuning to a persons own ears. So in the app in plays specific sounds with a different ear gain and you choose what sound best, then a sound for calibrating treble to preference etc.

    I like Crin's stuff and use the Reds regularly when I don't want to risk my higher end iems, love em for what they are and recommend them to people.
    But we need to stop with the hype train around this stuff. I think we're at a point with iems where we're not gonna get much better in terms of performance/price. Expecting someone to be able to come in and break the market without taking a loss now I don't think is reasonable.

    I want to share my experiences with long nozzles. I don’t have any problems with large ones like the Red however I can’t get it or the Hexa to fit flush to my ear. I realized it’s the length of the ear tip stem that butts up against the contour. Ironically, the red tip from the 7Hz Zero works for me on the Zero: Red. Lots of zeros lol
    I used to only focus on the tip outer and inner diameter, but now I’m going to try tip rolling on the Hexa with that in mind when I can. :) If it comes to it, I may have to cut the stem 1 mm at a time tho I think 2-3mm at least would make it fit.

Mostly ended up with just making everything under 1k match the tuning on the Katos, and cutting out the 6k peak. What's holding me back is the flimsy looking analog cable. Sure I could use a different one but I'm still paying for that ass-looking cable with the Dusk.
