Daniel Fisher's Moog Matriarch Deep Dive đ âą Moog Matriarch Deep Di...
Daniel Fisher, Sweetwater's master of Moogs, demonstrates the paraphonic playability and impressive 90 modular patch points of the Moog Matriarch semi-modular analog synthesizer. On its own, Matriarch packs everything players love about Moog - rich oscillators, dual ladder filters, powerful arpeggiation and sequencing, and even stereo analog delay. And once you begin exploring its patch points with your modular synth environment, it's soon apparent that the Matriarch offers a lifetime of creative potential.

As soon as this synth got announced I thought, "I can't wait to see what Daniel Fisher does with this."
Same here.
Yup!!!
So the 4 Oscillators come from the Moog Modular System 55. This is a mini-modular for those folks that don't have room for a big synth, and can't afford the huge expense. This synth looks and sounds like a nice new instrument from Moog. I bet there will be life-long synth heads that will lock themselves and this synth in their music room and ask their meals be slid under the door! This is serious stuff!
I love Daniels videos, he truly is passionate about Synths and great and demonstrating them.
Daniel, we're going to need that DeepDive, man. Others have done it a bit, yes. But Daniel can demo these like no other.
Where is the deep dive? I heard Hadid one but I can't find it!
@@24framemedia maybe the only way to deep dive it is to get one ourselve's and do it? lol
@@lashtal I have one, I was told to look for his deep dive because apparently there's some secrets with the dual delay that he supposedly touches on and I can't find his deep dive and I haven't seen anybody else bringing up this specific topic in depth.

I swear to god, Daniel can sell any synth. Just like that. Such a joy to watch him play with these.
Just bought one yesterday. Most inspiring synth I've ever owned. This is going on every single one of my tracks moving forward đ
Hospital hall green and calming asylum blue. Nice color scheme.
him explaining this thing while the arp is playing feels like a giant crescendo is coming where he's going to start glowing and vibrating until phasing out into thin air
Of course all Moog stuff is great, but this thing is probably the true heir to the Model D throne.
true - theyâre almost nothing alike, but this is one of those times when a synth has just the right combo of endlessly inspiring features
4:22 Seconds in, sold! Holy cow that sounds outstanding! Thanks again Daniel, always worthwhile.
Recently bought a grandmother, now I want this... The sound is incredible
Sounds splendid
They got everything right, well played Moog!
WOW!! JUST WOW!! Dream synth, with a great price point!
Sounds awesome. I want one! And your description of the features was fantastic :)
i just put me pre order in with you guys, so excited to get mine in september!!
I ordered one of these beasts from Sweetwater yesterday...looking forward to hours of sonic fun!
Preordered as soon as I possibly could!1
Look forward to the next video! This very well may be my first Moog product and I'll be sure to buy it at SW. Now to save my spare change..
Was worth every penny!
Wow, almost perfect! My ideal synth would pretty much be this with only three octaves, reverb as well as delay, more arp modes (strange shortcoming here), a smaller footprint and maybe more subtle design.
This sounds excellent!!
beautiful sound
Daniel, thank you very much for the video I really want to see a full review covering all the features. Really like your reviews

This looks so rad though! Love your demos
Great job brother! I am intrigued....
Thank you for another wonderful video! I am one of your biggest fan and purchase ALL of my gear from Sweetwater because of you and the spectacular professionals who are always patient and understanding with my old man questions! I am purchasing thus ones without reservation!

Already preordered!!
It sounds really good! like it :)
Waiting for the next chapter then, to fully enjoy how this synth can sing when wisely directed by Daniel Fisher. đđđ

OMG, this thing is just mind blowing, you wouldn't know where to start :D
Hi James. Always start with the Oscillators. Thanks for watching!
Phenomenal!
I want it!!
Grandmother on steroids. Yes, please! Nice one, Moog! Keep retro-innovating, you guys are the best. (Now sit back and wait for Roland and Behringer to respond, LOL)
Check the DSI Pro2 ;)
They will....... man, this is a good time to be into synths :)
Behringer are more of a source of cheaper versions of older synths. The behringer deepmind series is a digital synth series which is fine but i have a preference to true analog.
Compared to Behringer, Roland have no clue. At least Korg is paying attention
So you ordered an ASM Hydrasynth then?
It has CV Keyboard Aftertouch Out. This could be a winner.
What does that do?
@@christopherklein4203 It's an assignable controller without the need for menu diving. Run the AT CV back into an attenuator and into Osc Pitch, for instance, and you've got pitch bend with key pressure without having to use the wheels. At least that's how it works in my head...
troublesomecorsair Man thats awesome, im sold on this thing
troublesomecorsair i never use that.
What a beast machine
Mind blown! Can't even begin to imagine once Moog moves to the Patriarchy!!!
Down with the patriarchy
They will get in trouble with angry feminists ;D
Nice!
Greeeeaat ! ââđ
I really fancy getting into analogue synthesisers, one reason being I'm visually impaired so struggle with digital displays. Unfortunately, I didn't understand a single word this guy said, lol. But in an exciting way. It's gonna be a long haul, basically. I'll start reading manuals before I buy anything.
We're ready for that deep dive video, sir!

really a serious set of features. This thing is really cool. I bet people are going to make some other-worldly sounding audio creations with these.
This guy's good. 6:40
Superb demo! Can it be split into a true duophonic synth where two oscillators go into vcf1/env1/vca1, and the other two oscillators are routed into vcf2/env2/vca2, and âround robinâ between the two voices?
Hi Dark Horseman. I'm not sure if it does a round robin in that case, but Matriarch was clearly designed to be able to have two separate synth paths.
I hope Moog do an analog vocoder/string machine next.
Hello and thank you for sharing.. could you share the âdeep dive?â Thank you in advance! Awesome machine đȘđȘ

The external power supply (no iec cable) was a big letdown... hate those lumps laying around.. Soundwise it sounds great
Can you create formant-like sounds if you set the filter to LP/HP serial, turn up the resonance and modulate the two filter cutoffs independantly?
Hi Eirik. That's exactly how you get vocal formants. Thanks for watching!
Great review/demo! Any way you guys could do a short comparison between a Matriarch and a MiniMoog Model D?
Totally different synths.
Are you all working on a deep dive? Daniel is a library of synthesis knowledge
Hi Punish Tube. Here's the long-awaited Matriarch Deep Dive:

Guys this is a warning. Whatever you do... do not watch the Moog IIIP video before watching this one. It makes the Matriarch sound like a toy. It truly defines "you get what you pay for" in terms of analog synths.
I am selling everything, apart from my dog.
sell the dog for this itl be worth it
Amazing demo as always!!! (yes I saw the deep dive several times and still keep coming back to this one)
Also congratulations for the great playing!
A question: the really evocative gliding sound at 6:35...what is it? Did you tune the oscillators to a fixed minor chord, or were you playing paraphonic chords in real time?
Thanks
All the best, J.-
Hi Julio. Your first guess was correct. I have the four oscillators set to a Major 7th chord (F-A-C-E) which is useful as it can also be heard as a Minor 9th chord (D bass + F-A-C-E). -_Daniel_

2nd best video on moog matriarch right behind the moog official video
Moogâs promo sucks. Shot well but shows zero features of the synth and played by artists weâve never heard of.
Wow
Seriously impressive sound and functionality, why however does each 'block' need a different colour?I assume the eurorack scene with cases full of a variety of modules has informed the decision. For me a coherent look would best suit this synth.Sounds fantastic!
Get with the times
Unfortunately out of my range price wise but this would be my poly, er Paraphonic synth of choice if I could.
Like an old school Moog modular meets a modernized semi-modular mono/poly.
I wonder what theyâre doing in the possible 4-note poly like the Moog One/Sub line?
Hope theyâll do something like that in a more competitive price range. Doubt theyâll go down in price w/it but I guess all I can do is dream.
May end up getting the minilogue XD as my mono/poly esque poly.
Ubiquitous Reverser thatâs what Sweetwater 48 month financing is for đŹđŹđŹ

Does the name have anything to do with matrix architecture?
Hi Laurence. Matriarch can be defined as: A woman who is powerful within her family or organization. The name makes sense as it is more powerful than the Grandmother and the Mother-32 synthesizers that preceded it. Thanks for watching!
I guess it's time to get a Moog?
I know so little about synthesizers... anyone think this would be a good one to learn with? Seems like an instrument that will last many years and probably hold its value.
from my humble point of view :
As full analog synth semi modular, the interface with one knob = one function, and the colors of the modules, make this synth very easy to learn and to use at first level ( without the modular side ).
But for using the beast with its full functionalities and then using the modular side, you have to have a good knowledge of all elements of the synth.
You have to think if you want and can go into the modular side, if you really want this ( it is expansive for a newbie knowing little about synth ). The good side is that with the easy learning of the base, you can understand how to use each module and guess what can do the interactions.
Buying a Matriarch just for using the knobs and buttons is a waste.
If you ask a synth for a beginner, nobody will have the matriarch at the top of the list as answer, because it is a high end synth for professionals.
Among high end synth, analog synths are better for a beginner than the digital workstation with menu diving for learning how to program a synth.
But you have to put your hand in the motor, you have to do all, you don't have back up memory of patches, etc.... there is no presets, and no internal memory of patches.
While you are ready exploring, for programming from the spot with your hands each sounds you will play, a full analog synth can be a good thing for learning while you accept the flaws going with this kind of synth (no memory, limited polyphony, no realistic sounds ).
From Moog, if you really want this sound and this type synth , you have the little sister of the matriarch : the Great Mother, less expansive as first synth for learning.
@@jean-louispech4921 What a wonderfully thoughtful response. Thank you so much for giving me specific points to think about in the coming months.
The greatest weakness, and why I sold my grandmother, is the inability to save patches, and have pre-built presets. I would love to have the matriarch, but I will not buy another Moog unless they start adding those features back in.
Struck me as odd for them to go with the BBD instead of spring reverb but I guess another circuit board versus a whole reverb tank was an easy decision.
annabelleshaus A short delay can get âreverbyâ without creating a mess of the sound.
@@geerhoar this is true but why not both?
annabelleshaus given the space available for this unit, Iâd rather have outboard reverb. Spring isnât everyoneâs favorite flavor. I did pre-order one of these.
@@geerhoar damn sucks to be you, I'd hate to pay for something before it exists
Sweet mother of Moog...
Sequences with 256 notes and 4 notes maybe crazy for a moog, the poly800 had that in early eighties.
DEEP DIVE PLEASE đ
This looks amazing but I find their release of synths lately very frustrating. Years ago I bought the SubPhatty and then the Sub37 came out right after that. I recently just bought a Grandmother and now this comes out. I really wish they came out with the larger, more full featured model first and then the pared down model afterwards, that way people that couldn't afford the fancy model would have an entry point and those that think the larger model is more than they need can sell their synth and step down. Going the other direction feels like I'm just wasting money.
Sort of like when people buy a phone or computer and then a new one is released, how normal.
Looks great, but I'm tipping it will cost twice what my GM cost. Doesn't stop me wanting it. It's like two GMs on steroids in one box. Very nice.
louderthangod thatâs why I never bought a grandmother, because my lil PHATTY can produce better sounds. This thing would be cool to make some juicy Moog chords
Glen Marion Iâm not saying there isnât precedent but the Moonâs also arenât getting better because of newly developed technology that didnât exist before. Fractal just came out with the 3 and then after that released the simpler and cheaper floor model. Than is good gear and consumer friendly. All Iâm asking is that if they know theyâll make a larger model, come out with that first and then have the pared down after that. I donât expect it to always be the case but they may not have considered it an issue.
louderthangod that makes sense, seems kind of like a money scheme if you ask me lol
God i want this so bad, they announced this literally the day after I sold my grandmother
Justin Kinter Jesus , you synth guys are brutal , ha ha
@@valley_robot hahahaahahaha, I didn't get this at first. Now I do. Its hilarious. We are brutal.

Awesome! You are truly best out there.
paraphonic?
Yes! 4-notes of paraphony! Thanks for watching!
Sounds great! With 4 oscillators, too bad this does not have 2 sequencers or simultaneous seq/arp... with ability to improv on top of those.
could you not seq. w/ modular gear or something else thru patching?
Josh Spoon yeah, with enough external equipment and an unlimited budget you can probably make it do anything... but that is not what I was talking about.
@@valdiskrebs566 well my next answer would be the standard, "That would jack up the price", which would lead to your other problem. đ€·đŸââïž I'm not buying it anyway. Don't have the space and should spend 2k on the S&P 500.
Josh Spoon Agree. Two interacting sequencers/arps on this machine would be amazing... this is not a beginnerâs synth.
Valdis Krebs ???
Will it cut through in a live situation with guitars and drums like a MiniMoog? That's the real test.

Those BBD's tend to die pretty quick. Wonder if they've gotten better at making them?
BBD? What is BBD?

Yo momma sure is ugly! I still would though. đ In all seriousness, This seems a better made and cheaper alternative to the TVS PRO which is the best modern alternative that I can think of for pure vintage analogue tone from a 4 osc synth with a ratcheting sequencer. It doesn't have the stunning looks of TVS Pro though, as I really dont like the different colour scheme on the Moog, even though it would be easy to differentiate between the modules when noodling. But hey...its about what it feels like to play and mostly how it sounds. It sounds great!

The most 'dark' sounding moog ever made or is it just me? This thing will kill it in industrial raw techno
Hi morion. I'm a huge fan of the Moog Matriarch. I own a lot of Moogs, and have had many opportunities to play other Moogs. But the sounds available from the Matriarch put it amongst my favorites. Thanks for watching!
@@sweetwater thank you for your kind reply. Im into industrial raw hard tek and is time to sell my korg ms20 so im torn apart on a matriarch vs matrixbrute. I know both share so much yet are completely different at the same time. What would you suggest?
But... Can it sound like the Mini Moog?
Why?
@@reallivebluescat Because I like the particular bass sound of the MiniMoog. and for that I would have to buy a mini moog alike too.
LuddyVonBeat it can do 190 things the mini cannot do.
It definitely can get that classic minimoog sound! It's brighter than the sub 37 but still so warm. Amazing sweet spot.
LuddyVonBeat ?????
No way to save sounds?
Hi Andrew. Not electronically (other than taking a photo of your settings), but there are blank patch sheets that allow you to write down all of the connections and parameter values. It lends itself to a vibe that this preset is a one-time-only thing that should be captured in a multitrack recording.
