Have owned the Matriarch for 6 months now (and done a review on youtube) and can safely say it's a modern classic. Greatest synth I own.
It was the first synth I bought after the sound studio. Itâs my favorite piece of gear after heavy collecting guitar and amp stuff for 20 years. Just amazing.
There's something magical about the way the spring reverb works with the sound of the Grandmother.
Love the Matriarch. Just wish Moog would put out a 6-8 voice version with 61 keys.
The spring reverb is the only reason I would want the grandmother
That analog buzz cut is rad! I just love watching Daniel extract the soul from Synths.
Iâm a Modular newb and more of a Guitar player so I think that as juicy as the Matriarch looks, the Grandmother would be a more basic and affordable, yet superb doorway into this fascinating sonic world...
Same here. Bass player.
Get a 303 clone instead you guitarist dudes are slaying the acid sounds
These synth demos are awesome. More please. Iâm listening on good headphones and it makes my brain rattle! đł
You should be in the room with one. Seriously, CZcams compression kills the tone. It brings out goosebumps!
Wow it sounds so good with headphones on. So pure, precise and rich. Best analog synths for the money for sure.
iâm listening to this on my way to pick up matriarch and holy shit that stereo filter is something iâm going to spend hours meditating with
Thank you for the vid!
It is done, I will own both. Started with the grandmother, love it! Matriarch is on the way.
The delay in the matriarch is comparable to a Mooger fooger, best Iâve heard in years
Will Moog release the next step? The *Goddess*? Full polyphony and looks equally as cool as the other two. And includes both Sring Reverb and Stereo Delays :D
Hi Andrew. If they'll make it, I'll play it! Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_
Lol, $20,000
They have
It is called the one
Thank you for the demo.
Thank you. This is very clear and informative!
Daniel/Walter Sobchak, youâre my favorite synth wizard on CZcams.
I laughed so hard at this.
Fantastic demo! I want the Moog Matriarch more than ever! A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Iâm using the GM for my Dancehall Reggae/Hip Hop band for playing bass lines. It fills the room, unapologetically, and I canât wait to use it on stage. The sound is incredible and warm and FAT. I also have the Novation Bass Station (since 2014) and it doesnât come close to the GM, as far as warmth. Twenty years as a professional musician and my Gear Acquisition Syndrome is cured and Iâm obsessed with this perfect machine.
Fantastic video. Keep up the great work.
I want to buy GM but this thing with spring reverb worries me a little. Can you turn of the reverb totaly that it does not make noises because I am playing in a extremely loud band so I am not sure if the vibrations would trigger it on stage. What's you experience? Thanks and best regards. :)
DuĆĄko Rudan yeah you can turn it off completely.
I perfectly understand what you're saying. The Moog sounds fantastic!
I'm a Finnish musician and I've used a lot of new and vintage synths. These Moogs have voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) instead of DCOs with a digitally controlled perfect pitch. An old school VCO synth naturally sounds bigger right at the beginning. In many of those synths the tiny amount of pitch drifting makes a difference but in the case of Moog there's more than that to make it sound really good. You can't go wrong by choosing a Moog.
I know it can take a bit more work to make a DCO analog synth sound bigger but you can usually get there and have the warmth in your sound as well. I just think that the Novation Bass Station II (I guess you meant the version 2 and not the first humble synth from 1993) is also great. It's a very hands-on and versatile little synth. You could say it's a low budget sound designer's dream because you can save the patches as well. You also need a digital control to save them of course.
Is there someone reading this and thinking of buying a synth with a lower budget? My advice is to give the Novation Bass Station II a chance. There's some ways to make it sound bigger. One typical thing to do is to use two oscillators at the same pitch but then detune the 2nd oscillator just a bit. You can even use pulse width modulation on two oscillators at the same time. Using a slight amount of natural sounding vibrato (an LFO modulating the pitch) in just the right speed is always a good option. You could also use that vibrato with a different depth on each oscillator. You might like it.
If you still decide that the Novation synth isn't for you then spend some more money and definitely get a Moog. Michael Healy knows what he's talking about but it's always best to try any synthesizer yourself. You're in control. You can definitely do a lot with them. Take care and have a fantastic day.
@@Vimana For the price, the Novation BS2 is fantastic! I recommend just running it through a bass amp to get a fuller sound, also. Cheers.
I got the Grandmother last year and although the Matriarch has some features I am definitely a little jealous of, I decided to go all in and went with the 16 voice ONE to fill the need for poly.
Makes sense.
I have a Grandmother and a One, too, but for some reason I still feel like I want the Matriarch.
Eric that is because the One lacks sonic character.
Spazzoid Studio I donât agree. I think the Moog One has a character similar to the Sub 37 and less like the Model D or Grandmother/Matriarch... so a bit less warm. I can get a lot out of the One, and itâs fun to program. Iâd love to use the Matriarch with my Eurorack rig.
i now realize i need both, grandmother for left hand and matriarch for right.
I hope I live long enough to fully explore my Matriarch. It's just...mwa!
Own both and love them both!
I hope that the deep dive of the matriarch, Daniel is talking about in the video, is coming soon! Thank you as always for that great content!
[17:45] Matriarch parallel filters aren't hard panned L/R by default (although you could break the normal routing to re-patch it that way)
Great review. When does the Grandmother with Matriarch delay instead of spring reverb come out? The Matron perhaps? Sign me up.
Or GrandmotherMother?
Daniel is the best thanks
Is the key rack available for purchase from you guys?
This is for a gift so I'm not an expert, hints the question. But would you go for the Moog matriarch or the prophet x? Thanks!
I love my Grandma although yeah i would like the matriarch but im happy just to own the mono , i think both these synths are going to have legendary status in years to come like a sh101 or a pro-one etc ..
If you go mono out, will you not be able to hear one filter, or do the two filters just output as mono?
What do you think about the Matriarch vs Sequential Pro 3 ? (apart obvious semi-modular differences of course, I am interested in realtime improvisation potential)
I have both. Completely different concepts. The pro 3 is wonderful. Itâs very flexible. The matriarch oscillators are amazing. It feels a lot more experimental.
Daniel, with the same main volumen, I feel a low level in my Matriarch vs GM. Do you feel the same?.
17:17 "Why would you NOT want that?" Because the sound guy might HATE you! đ
Hi yobhsiFehT. I can live with that. Thanks for watching!
Sweetwater lol I knew I liked you for a reason đ
what stand is that? I'm looking for a 2 tier stand with a nice offset between layers.
Hi Brian. That stand is from Gator Frameworks:
www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/XStdDbl2TF--gator-frameworks-gfw-key-5100x-deluxe-2-tier-x-style-keyboard-stand
Thanks for watching!
Great video
Wow they both sound insane!! Can you turn off the spring reverb totally on GM in live/ on stage condictions that the vibrations do not affect the unit?? I've seen a lot of people complain about reverb being over-sensitive and that practically you can't hear nothing when the reverb starts to "roar" on stage! Sorry if the question is stupid but I never had a chance to play with spring reverbs. Thanks and best regards.
Hi Dusko Rudan. There is a knob on the Grandmother called REVERB MIX that adjusts the mix of the reverb. If you set that knob full counterclockwise you won't hear the reverb. Thanks for watching!
Donât put it straight in front of the speaker and no problems will occur .
Played with diverse springreverbs on stage and never experienced big problems ..
Thanks for a superb demo as always! Can't Sweetwater try to convince Moog to release a set of just black (and white) overlays for the Matriarch? I need a more calm and sombre surface, like on the Sub 37.
BOOOO! đ lol
(Sorry, I LOVE the wonky color scheme! đ€·đŒââïžđ)
very nice
Does the grandmother sound more like a Model D? I have a matriarch but I am not crazy about the sound. In videos it seems the grandmother sounds better for basic bass and lead sounds. If the GM sounds more like a Model D then why is that.. is it a different filter?
Model D is boring
Maybe the signal line is shorter and more direct that way . Also the delay probably will take away character due to ad-da / bucketchips conversions ?
@@christopherpederson1021 Unless you know how to actually play., rather than holding down one note while twisting a noise filter knob.
Daniel, given your knowledge of Moog Modular, it would be super interesting to compare Matriarch (and even Grandmother) to the various Modulars, since Matriarch is being called by some a "gateway to modular synthesis." In other words, the Moog modular components are always referenced when talking about Matriarch/Grandmother components, but I'd be curious whether they authentically sound the same.
Hi SilverSulu. We've never had the big Moog Modulars and the Matriarch available to shoot at the same time. But here are links to my demos of several Moog Modular synths for comparison:
czcams.com/video/n3K_fZDvINs/video.html
czcams.com/video/53AfNa-l8gI/video.html
czcams.com/video/VKfrGQyv5_g/video.html
czcams.com/video/RuS3uaf9KFI/video.html
Just open the videos up side-by-side, and set each to the moments when I'm testing a single oscillator.
SilverSulu Nahhh. I think these two synths make it clear that nobody REALLY needs a full-on modular system.
SilverSulu in a final mix, why would it even matter???
anyone know why the right side gets noisy during the Martriarch delay explanation?
Bucket delay chips : noisy and frequency top offâŠ
I really want the Gm now. Damn it.
No reverb on the Matriarch ?
Hi Dan. Correct. No reverb on the Matriarch, and no delay on the Grandmother. But here's a video I made showing a low-cost Spring Reverb pedal and comparing it to the Grandmother:
czcams.com/video/DkY6d2eDBT8/video.html
Thanks for watching!
take the grandmother and combine it with your modular and you probably have a more poweful synth, which dosnt cost 2,5 grand. i owned both. i really love them, but i kept the grandmother becuse it has the best reverb i have hread in an unit!!!
Hi TheNimasan. The Moog team spent many hours finding that exact reverb behavior. -_Daniel_
7:51 tells the story. Only thing I would like is a wider keyboard on both.
for those times when you're playing Chopin Fantasie Impromptu in C# minor on your Moog?
@@station2station544 no. For those times when I need the next white key up.
@@MrStupidHead set the oscillator "foot" settings to your desired 4 octaves prior to playing. I've never run out of range on a mono synth that is 4 octaves.
use a midi controller
I Completely Love What You Do, I know I commented you resemble the "Dude,, Jeff Bridges friend, bowling guy,.. not Steve Bushemi (bad spelling please forgive) I have Purchased Both and they are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ANIMALS to say the least.
I feel like grandmother is more patient with me vs the Matriarch.
Not downing the Matriarch in any way shape or form. Perhaps I COMPLETELY LOVE MOTHERS SPING...I AM A SUCKER FOR THE BEST.
I completely completely gone on The Cheap... Moog ALWAYS COMPLETELY IS WHERE YOU WANT A SPRING.
JUST BE CAREFUL.. THIS SPRING IS SUPER SENSITIVE. LIKE BECAREFULL NEXT TO BASS AND DRUM... COULD AND WILL SET HER OFF, .. WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU EXPECT FROM A
TESTED POSITIVE, TRIED AND TRUE PEDIGREE?
THANK YOU DR. MOOGđą
Two make the ultimate effect pedal board, with a keyboard and a sequencer on top. :)
I'd love to buy Matriarch to compliment the Grandmother that I already have.
Take both. Techno minimal projects for days if you are into that like i
Thumbs up! :-)
14:25 with headphones on, max volume. you're welcome
Do I need both?
You need the Matriarch and any other Moog synth(s).

Amazing! the only sound that put my teeth on edge was vocal - "very unique" - aaaagh! Unique by the very 'uni' of the word means singular. Unique is an absolute and cannot thus be qualified. Something is either unique or it isn't. If it isn't but is unusual - you mean simply 'rare'. BUT that rant aside - pure genius.
Hi @ianmeredith6217. I can't argue with any of that :-)
-_Daniel_
Some of the filter sweeping he does reminds me of the regular show intro

13:55 actually THREE attenuVERTERS
Bonus! Thanks for watching!
8:05 yummy sounds!
so which on better..oh simple....BOTH!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was pretty cool feeding the output of the GM's reverb into the input of the Matriarch's Delay, and then feeding a little of that back into the reverb:-)
Forbidden Planet ..
prolly just get both, right?!
As your professional adviser, I fully agree!
@@sweetwater you're my favorite music **cough** dealer **cough**
was wondering what the big boss man from the wwf was doing nowadays
To anyone who has owned a grandmother and a korg minilogue xd... should I sell my minilogue to get a grandmother?
These two are far more ballsy than the One IMO.
Spazzoid Studio agreed. And so much less expensive.
Sweetwater: I was looking carefully at the Matriarch. I see a chip and smudge near the modulation wheel and I remember making those blemishes. I think you borrowed my Matriarch and I would like for you to send it back to me so I can do more product demos on my channel. Remember, please, that borrowing something doesn't make it yours. This is holding up my career as a comic musician (Hot Pocket in Atlanta by SashaBooBoo). So please send it back. Fedex is preferred. If you cannot find it, then please send a Prophet 6 or a Model D. Sincerely, SashaBooBoo.
Hi Sashabooboo. I talked with some of the merchandizing folks and we've decided that we're going to send you that chip and smudge so that you can apply them to your next synth. No need to thanks us. That's just how we roll!
@@sweetwater you should get out of music and into comedy because that was more funny than what I wrote :)
Lol
Hahaha
14:26 I had headphones full volume, damn near creamed my pants
I don't think they have the same filter
Hi Apple Kid. They don't. For more details, go to 4:51 starting with "and the Filters, definitely a difference..."

Donny..you are out of your element.
I want you to know that this comment wasnât wasted. Well done, sir.
why always weird creepy music?
"I've gotta' be međ”đ¶" -_Daniel_
I have had the Grandmother since it came out and I just got the Matriarch. Not sure if I'll keep it though. These keyboards are good at making wonky quirky sounds but not for creating playable music. You're not going to be sitting back bangout Chords on the Matriarch unless you put in some real patch work to get it there and it feels like a chore. For 2G's there's a lot of other synths out there than are more playable and even for that price there's still a whole lotta sub 1G synths that can do the sounds the Matriarch does or give it a run for it's money and that includes Moog's own Mother 32 and Subharmonica. I think the Matrairch would have been nice at $1,200 bucks. It's not at all a 2Grand synth.
Making sounds from scratch is half the fun, discovering the sound is almost as fun for me as playing it, I find both equally satisfying, when I experiment with my Matriarch.
I think you bought the wrong synths!
Interesting. I feel like musical results basically fell out of my Matriarch from the first time I played it. I will be buried with mine.
Skip both and get a Moog One if you can afford it :-)
Very different beasts, all wonderful. No skipping necessary! I think the Matriarch is a little more unique than the One for example, just preference I suppose!
No need to skip... All 3 are unique, I think the Matriarch is the most unique to be honest.
Def get all 3.
They're not as fat and moog as you might think, micromoog is fatter in fact but let's not even talk memorymoog
Hello Mr Fisher.
Was hoping you could Please help me with some advice.
I did know how different the Moog Grandmother and Matriarch are really different Beasts too be reconed with.
The Grandmother just automatically fits.
Matriarch, I am finding it , completely Way different.
Could you please shed some light on this subject đ Please?
Thank You đ
