    My great grandfather was killed at paschendale during the 3rd battle of ypres in 1917. I needed to visit the place and went last November on the 100th anniversary of the end of the war, it was such a moving experience, his body was never identified, so he could be buried in an un-marked grave in any number of cemeteries in the area or still lying on the battlefield, but at the largest cemetery at Tynecot I found his name on a wall commemorating all the missing. Despite all the horror it is a beautiful and peaceful place now and I paid my respects to him, his comrades and to everyone from all sides. I think the world would be a better place if we could all visit these places. Thank you for your reaction, I would love to hear your views on Revalations or When the Wild Wind Blows, both by maiden. Cheers.

    A little context. Paschendale is the name commonly given to the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Ypres, in Belgium Flanders saw furious fighting throughout the 1914-18 war including three full battles). The Battle of Paschendale lasted for about 4 months from July-November 1917 and was named for the fighting towards its end for the village of Paschendale (by that time so devastated it effectively did not exist except on a map). The fighting is infamous for the horrifying conditions of mud and rain as the region experienced a unusually wet season in an area already water logged and destroyed by multiple years of static fighting. Ypres and Flanders have become sacred ground for the sacrifices made there by Commonwealth soldiers (UK, Canada, Australia, Sth Africa, India, NZ - mainly) alongside troops from France and Belgium. Ypres has two great Commonwealth memorials to unknown soldiers, men who died in the Flanders area over the 4 year conflict but whose bodies were never found. The Menin Gate in Ypres itself commemorates nearly 55,000 men with no known grave and the Tyne Cote cemetery wall to the missing includes another 35,000 dead without identified graves, so the Flanders area saw roughly 90,000 Commonwealth soldiers simply vanish, lost into the cauldron of the fighting. This was a different kind of conflict to anything we'd recognize today, its horrifying nature should be remembered as a lesson to us all of the horror, futility and waste of war. Its also worth mentioning that the Belgians spell it Passchendaele.

    • @michaellejeune7715
      @michaellejeune7715 Před 5 lety +1

    A masterpiece..... no doubt about it. Iron Maiden have Great War/Anti-war songs. Please check The Longest Day (about the D Day - highly recommended), For the Greater good of God, Aces High, Fortunes of War, Two Minutes to Midnight, The Legacy, Tailgunner, Afraid to Shoot Strangers, etc. Iron Maiden is perfect to bring emotions when they perform a song. Those feelings could be great, sour, bitter, sweet, get the point.... that what's the song about.... to bring the audience a good experience when listening any song... That's why Iron Maiden is so cool and different to other bands....

    Iron Maiden knew once again how to get and capture the feel of this theme and turn this into a masterpiece for their extended musical legacy. From the very beginning to the end of the song we can picture in our minds the scenes of the war in Paschendaale through each verse and instrumental parts of this song. Perfect! The chorus is killer and takes you right back in time and puts you in the frontline feeling all the emotions and the loneliness that a war battle can bring to a soldier. The closure gives you the idea of a death moment..as if the soul of the soldier was fading away.
    Long live Iron Maiden!

    One of Maiden's best choruses of the modern maiden era. Always been one of my favorites from them. Great pick. Great instrumental section in this as . Whats interesting about this one is that it doesn't have that traditional maiden gallop like some of their other songs. At least not the whole way through. That bridge section in the middle of the two solos is some incredible writing this is a 9.8/10 for me.

    The battle of paschendale was unique because of the terrain, most of the casualties were either killed by the mud or there bodies were lost in it, it was like quick sand, if they stepped off the wooden planks laid down they were almost sure to drown, so many soldiers were never found. In WWI, unknown grave was literal. Soldiers would fall in no man's land and the battle would continue to rage for weeks or months with no possibility of recovering the bodies. Corpses would be buried by the shellfire, or shredded by it. Ernst Junger, a German veteran who wrote a book called "Storm of Steel" based on his experiences, wrote of digging a trench and digging down into a layer of bodies where a previous trench had been flattened and forgotten with dozens of dead men entombed by the artillery.

    Paschendale was the costliest battle of WW1, and the traffic (and city) still comes to a halt every day for the commemoration and remembrance service held there every single day.
    Iron Maiden's lyrics always focus on the horrors of war, and never glorify it, except in one song I can think of - Aces High - which remembers the few - those young airmen who saved The UK from German invasion in WW2. In the words of Winston Churchill "Never, in the field of human conflict, hs so much been owed by so many to so few".

I have been a huge Savatage fan for over thirty years. I can't believe that it took a change of their name to become famous. Most probably have no clue that Trans Siberian Orchestra were once called Savatge. Both bands are different in many ways, but very much the same also.

    The next Maiden song you should react to, that also talks about war and similar themes is For the Greater Good of God, it's an awesome song. Until then, you should react to Alcest or Magna Carta Cartel (the band that came before Ghost, far superior in my opinion and it doesnt revolve around satanism, check them out! Hotellus Eviction is their to-go song)

    Vin, Paschendaele is a Belgian Village in the Northwest Belgian Province named West Flanders. There was a major battle or Flanders Offensive there during WWI with England, France & Belgium on 1 side & Germany (German Empire) on the other. This battle was before USA joined the war. I researched the battle, and there are other major offensives led up to Paschendaele Offensive. Causalities were about equal on both sides.

    I know Paschedale is a village in the Ypres salient there was a report that a Canadian Soldier was Crucified on a barn door or tree with 5 bayonets. Not sure if that was verified but it was used to sell war bonds and I believe a memorial was made for this soldier. Rest in Peace to all soldiers from both sides of that conflict sad to know they are still finding some of the missing from that war.

    1917 The battle of Passchendale was the one with he biggest losses for both parties.. close to 800.000 ( some calulations even add 200.00 more losses to the German side, maiking it 1.000.000 people died in one single battle, filling the Earth litterally with blood, the village of Passendaele was almost completely flat after the battle..

    Paschendale Was brutal, the year before The Battle of the Somme occurred too, which was just appalling. World War I was utter hell. One thing I've loved about Maiden and other bands is that, even in ways that will never TRULY convey the utter atrocities that occurred, their songs keep the memory alive for us to hear and learn about.
