Saying to wait until they hit you is beating around the bush. You don't start fights, but you also don't let the other person hit you first. The best thing would be they swing and miss, but that's not quite how the world works 100% of the time.
@@rrteppo that's why I retreat first and foremost. I don't wanna fight, especially if I'm on my own and I don't have anyone to defend, and if I keep my distance I have more time to react. I won't hit them until after they've swung or they've actually made a sudden effort to close the distance. Slowly back away, if they swing from where they can't properly reach you, move in and hit, if they charge, you run unless you have a reason to fight.

My step dad told me the same thing as a kid. I was pretty short growing up and I would have bullies. There was a time when four of them start to mess with me until one of them separated from the group and came towards me. I hit him as hard as I could in the mouth then proceeded to kick the shhh out of him. While the other three just watched. Never got bullied again. Got suspended though but it was worth it.
If I didn’t stand up for myself, the bullying would have continued. I’m thankful my step dad had that conversation with me and I’ll have the same with my son.

I was really skinny in high school, but after I had taken enough for weeks in this "new" school, I guess he hit me good but I apparently beat him. Had him down, face down, after we flipped over a water fountain and I was stopped before dropping my knee into the back of his neck. Football coach pretty much carried us both to the office. 2 weeks later, some of his friends were now my friends and none messed with me again. I just snapped when I got pushed from behind and turned around and I punched the closest guy. F**ktards on both "sides" thought it was a racial thing but that's what the area was like over 30 years ago.
And what happens when their friends all gang up on you? 3 on 1 you have zero chance let alone 4or 5.
