Amazing Flea Market Ratchet Finds - Will They Work?

I picked up these three awesome ratchets at the local flea market and couldn't wait to get them ready for work again. Let's get busy!

Thanks! Yes, in my opinion it's superior to most penetrating oils. If I need a spray can to access a bolt I'll go with something else but usually I use Mystery Oil.

Opening up those Williams can be a nightmare. I think they made a tool, which no one ever seems to have. Put it in a vise, hit with penetrating oil, heat it up with a propane torch, and grind down a punch to fit the hole. Start tapping at an angle to get it to move. It takes a lot of turns because the threads are really fine. sometimes you can get lucky and it goes well. Good luck!!

Thanks! I'm going to try to open it up with some angled snap ring pliers. i really want to see what was binding it up unless of course the mystery oil dissolved it. A lot of goo dripped out once i had it moving.

Nice score. Put them in a soup cap of trans fluid for a couple of days. I do that with all my rachets once or twice a year

update, use snap ring pliers w/pins & a 90 degree bend. snap on makes the pair i use.

Thanks! I think I have those so it should be easy enough unless the ratchet is stuck but with all of the mystery oil I ran through it I think it'll open.

Yes you unscrew. That side with the holes with a spaner wrench. Or a punch and hammer.

Pin wrench to open that, or if its not too tight, a 90° snap ring pliers.

After getting rust off a wrench or ratchet, do you recommend putting anything on them to prevent rust coming back?

This could open a whole can of worms with some people. :) It depends on how bad the rust was. If it was really bad I sometimes spray them with clear paint. If it's all metal you could even put oil on it and bake it like a cast iron pan. Some people would recommend getting a home plating kit and going that route. Generally I find a light coat of motor oil or metal polish works well to keep the rust down. I don't recommend WD-40 for that. Too caustic. Good luck!

Dont listen to the fools. All you neen is a snap ring pliers with pins,works great! Ive done it before!
Use liquid wrench,that works great too,50 years experience
